Would I Buy Another APRILIA RSV4?

After just over 2 years of ownership, the RSV4 is a love/hate relationship. The bike is a rush to ride but all that power and exoticness comes with a price.

I have owned almost every brand of motorcycle and I have to be honest, I have never had a problem beside factory recalls. Every brand has their problems including Japanese motorcycles, once you get one with problems then you will hate that brand. Don’t ever let someone’s opinion change your decision on buying the brand you like. Experience for yourself

If a mechanic told me he was charging me more to change a tyre because I rode an Aprilia I would change my mechanic and let him know why I was doing so.

Hey man, thanks so much for the honest insight. People forget (like me) when shopping for bikes how much of a pain owning an exotic can be. Your perspective really helps keep that in check. Great vid!
@fostytou
@fostytou 5 лет назад
Your mechanic admitted he would charge you more for the same work.... You should find a new mechanic. There is nothing special about a tire change on the ape if you are calibrating yourself. You can find a $40 used fan on eBay. And a $5 bearing and $20 gasket. Your "big problems" should've cost your $65. You can replace both of those in a parking lot. ...But you want to buy an R1 that are breaking cranks left and right?
@danishard1322
@danishard1322 5 лет назад
Race teams and drag racers are breaking cranks, street Rossi's or normies aren't Some bikes have freak accidents with the cranks but it's 99.9% race teams Although Yamaha should repair this sure but it's fixed under warranty

I have a 17 tuono v4(first street bike too) and I use it for commuting, canyons, and as of recently the track and it is a dream for all those. Oil every 3k valve adjustment every 12,000 never had a problem. I do all the service myself and I learned on this bike. AF1 raceing is the reason owning an aprilia does not have to Be difficult. They gave me a copy of the service manual for valve adjustment when I bought the parts. Absolute blessing for those bike owners who prefer to do their own service.

Lol.... Man learn to service it yourself, I do my rsv4 myself and normal service costs me $80 I fit my own tears and just get a shop to balance it...... it is a life changing bike if you learn to fix it yourself.

P.s. One thing the Aprilia tech told me BTW, is as soon as you shut the bike off at home, put it on a battery tender. It'll slowly drain the battery with the electronics, and it's very finicky when the voltage drops. He said battery tender all the time and you'll be good. So far he's right. That might help reduce electronic issues, but it also helps extend the battery life. Swapping for lithium might be lighter, but might trip codes or cause issues too in the Aprilia depending on the battery. The PC is looking for a very specific voltage.

Thanks for the honest take on owning the gorgeous exotic. You keep my dream alive for me to own one of these. I have 2 hondas, a 07' VFR (the OG V4) and '89 GB500 Cafe racer. But I test rode a '17 model last year and fell in love😍 Definitely on my bucket list if I'm fortunate enough to get one. I've been scouring Coparts to possibly get one that is still salvageable but none so far.

Great honest video. Just got a new to me FZ1. Had to narrow down to what I would actually love, use for the type of riding I would actually do, and make the purchase with reason rather than emotion. Got down to a short list of 3 bikes and then bought the one that was the right deal. Super stoked with what I got... now just waiting for riding season up here in Canada ( street sweepers just started to roll ).

MP for me I look at differently. My 17RR only has 1600 miles on it but that's OK. Getting on this bike is a special occasion just like driving a Ferrari or Lambo. I would never want to daily drive an exotic car or use it to go to work. The cost is definitely higher on these bikes but we go into it knowing that. Your bike is really special and if you do decide to sell the buyer will be getting a terrific machine! I have enjoyed and learned a lot from your videos and look forward to seeing more, whatever you are on! Stay safe brother.

I've watched your journey with this bike because I love it from a distance. My situation hasn't allowed me to buy this bike, I am much older and am quite satisfied with my Yamaha. But hey this is still my dream bike. Wishing you all the best in how you make your decision. Ther is always a void between emotion and conviction. We buy bikes largely on emotion. I have had my bike for nearly three years and when the weather is hot it's hard to get motivated. I ride mostly two up and it is our freedom. All the best. If you want you can find me on FB. I was riding home from work late at night empty streets and a guy on a RSV4 pulled up next to me. He was wearing a business suit which is unusual but I'm talking northern beaches in Sydney so maybe not. He launched the thing it bogged down for a second or two then took off.My god I've never see anything accelerate that hard was jaw dropping from where I was. Can only imagine how you would have to recalibrate my brain owning that machine crazy...

Just bought a used 2016 couple months ago and still lovin it. Felt really tall at first but once I set up suspension sag for my weight it felt much better. Only has 6K miles and haven’t had any issues yet, but I don’t mind wrenching on my bikes… American, Japanese or Italian. Great power delivery! Always a fun ride. Too much bike for everyday street use. Very very loud with Austin race exhaust, but it sounds so good I can’t bear to change it. I don’t see myself selling it. Amazing Ride!

I owned a 2017 Aprilia Tuono RR. Not the RF but it was an incredible bike. I sold it start of 2019. I bought it new and in the first 6 months I had the coolant pump die (a known factory issue) and fan sensor re-install. It was aggravating to say the least. Still the bike was a joy to ride hard. They (Aprilia) don't like to be 'managed' for inner city riding. They like it high in the rev range so much so that the bike was only at it's happiest above 7,000 rpm and accelerating. Perfect for highway or distance rides but not suited for inner city. Not Inner Sydney that is. Everybody should own a V4 at some point. The exhilaration is unmatched. The engine is in my opinion the best out there and the Aprilia chassis is world class. Still being without a bike now for 5 months I'm getting withdrawals......

😂👍 I love my RSV4’s, I have 2. On a side note, I also did an impulse purchase last year when I purchased my Ducati XDiavel S... I should had just bought what I was planning on. Which was an Ducati Hypermotard SP... but, test after riding the XDiavel I was like I most have this... but after putting 13xx miles on it... I realized that am not ready for this type of relax riding. This bike is just to laid back for riding. I love it though...

You gave so many reasons why it best to buy Japanese Bikes. The one exception is the Triumph sport bikes. I had a Yamaha Sprint RS (not the touring bike) with the 955i triple. I had it for 12 years with no breakdowns or unexpected repairs. It was 437 lbs, and I was a short rider which made it scary sometimes, but it did have a low seat so I could touch the ground on the ball of my foot. I was older when I sold it, but I wanted to ride still and bought a smaller and lighter sport bike Yamaha R3 which shocked me for being so much fun. Unfortunately my riding friends have all retired from bike, and I must ride alone. After 4 years I have no problems with break downs, but being a new motor it had some recalls. I would trust it to ride cross country with a made for my bike Saddlemen seat, sport bags and rear top bag. With better tires and slip on it has not disappointed in any way. Until the Triumph I started with a Yamaha off road bike and put 3800 miles before I sold it to buy an RD 400, and none of those bikes ever had a break down. What I'm saying is if I step to a bigger bike again it will be Japanese.

I appreciate the honesty. I am also eyeballing the new 2020 RSV4 Factory, but feedback like this, while certainly welcome, does give me the certainty that I would like to have to be sure I am doing the right thing. I know Italian bikes possess character that no other bikes do, but there is something to be said for the maintenance-free nature of their Japanese counterparts. It feels like it is indeed a hit or miss with Italian machines, given the responses here.

Man, I'll be straight... this was a depressing video to watch. I could just hear the v4 in the background ripping in the background, yearning for your approval and the desire to thrill you as you rode her talking about the novelty having worn off. If I had the money, I'd be offering to take her off your hands but I don't have the ability at the moment to drop such a serious amount of $$$ at one time. I always have appreciated watching your videos as the allure of the rsv4 has always been documented. But this was just one depressing video for sure man. I have a 2017 Aprilia Tuono 1100 RR and also a 2016 Kawasaki ZX14R SE and I'm trying to decide which one to sell so I can pay for a bathroom remodel. Both are sweet, the ZX14R pulls like it wants to rip your arms off, rides smooth, and has enough steering lock to move it around the garage, but the Aprilia's motor sound and character is just so sweet. Mine has the color screen and has never given me any issues. Even though it's technically "slower" than the ZX14R, it's stupid fast and I could never use all it's ability on the street. The quickshifter is amazing, the Bosch 5 axis IMU with cornering abs, traction control, wheelie control, rear lift control etc makes it great. It's an Italian exotic, which generally comes with more maintenance. I haven't had any issues yet with mine, but I haven't changed exhaust yet it sounds so good stock. My only slight regret is that I didn't buy the RSV4 RF they had on a deal and traded my ZX14R towards it. That bike is probably the ultimate machine...then again the RSV4 1100 Factory is out now, hmm. If only they gave it a good paint job...

I’m sure the race ecu is better tuned, but it wasn’t “needed” to fix the bike. The exhaust servo delete is all you really needed, or you can just unhook the cables but keep the motor hooked up and it would have been a free fix, although if you keep the servo motor in, you don get the 1lb or 2 weight savings from taking out the servo motor.

The big issue with Italian bikes is faults, always make sure you have a dealer near as you will have a problem. I had a R1 and ZX10 both never missed a beat, then wanted a Ducati as a beauty to look at and brand new, 32 miles from shop warning light came on oil coming out of belly pan lucky not too crash but was driving like Miss Daisy as new so was picked up and a week later got it back. It didn't like water either as lucky for me it was on a expensive centre stand and it would start up on it's own with out the key in it, so that was fixed by lots of electronics and loom change. Lovely bike but weak, and cooked my balls all the time. The R1 had 22,000 mls on it and just 2nd gear was getting noisy but it was rode hard with track days and always serviced and checked the valves and all where in spec. Had a Fire Blade and that was great but false neutrals was a pain.

Mine coughs fire after the first day off the showroom floor at 100 km. . Tank psv valve failure , fouled injector. 3 months in the shop. Then shifter recall. Dealer wouldn’t fix. 9000 km head gasket blown. Not sure if I’ll get one again.

I've had an 07 Tuono 1000r for 9 years, it's got 95,000 kms on it. The stator burnt out, which i replacement myself for $150 but I've had no other problems. I also have a 17 Tuono Factory which has 10,000 kms on it and have had zero problems. I do my own servicing for less than $100 per bike and neither bike has ever been to a workshop for repairs or maintenance. Just keep your Ape or you will regret it. Nothing else will give you the same feeling.

I’ve bought my 2016 RSV4 RR brand new and I have not had any problems or mechanical issues with mine ... NONE !! I had the dealer install the Akra exhaust with Race ECU. They did a great job, no lights, warnings or anything. (Aprilia of Portland) I’d hate for someone to think “you are getting into” some kind of quality problem with these bikes, because it can happen with any brand. Just look at how many R1s are having crank issues. Most people without problems don’t take the time to write a comment. I’d love to upgrade my bike to the 2019 RSV4, but honestly I don’t need more power. Change the gearing ratio on this bike, get the race ECU, dial the suspension and you are done !! Like your videos ..

@@deankruse4491 These comments are really discouraging. My dealer has a 2019 RF with 1k miles on it for $12.5k rn and I was going to pick it up tomorrow. Now im really second guessing this.

An exclusive bike means parts are exclusive, mechanics are exclusive with exclusive hourly wages as not all mechanics are specialized to work on more premium bikes. Same with more expensive cars and exotics cars. My Porsche dealership takes multiple close up pics of all the service cars so customers can not say the mechanic or dealership damaged their cars. You must wait for parts which is always a problem but they always supply a loaner

I actually sold my brand new Aprilia Tuono 2017 after riding it 9 months. I had it towed to a workshop in total 7 times over that period. Issues ranged from the dash not lighting up at all, to the starter motor failing, to even the ignition key getting stuck (and 2 tow mechanics and the workshop manager couldn't un-stick it). For me, it was absolutely unreliable and I could never second guess the next time it would fail on me. Happily riding a Triumph Street Triple RS and haven't looked back since. For those who think I'm making this stuff up, I have photos for every time it has broken down on me to prove it. I will never recommend an Aprilia to anyone ever.

That’s interesting. You must’ve got a bad one. Two of my friends own an Aprilia, 16 RSV4RR and a 17 Tuono Factory. The RSV4 has 30k with only a fan issue, the Tuono has 15k and had a fan issue (apparently is may be a common thing idk) and an oil leak here and there which was covered under warranty. That’s sucks though, hopefully they’ve worked out some kinks. I’m looking at a new RSV4 or a new R1.

Moto, it’s been a while, I was thinking, this is why they call them “exotic”! While we here in SoCal are even fortunate enough to have Aprilia available, they aren’t even available in other places. Service cost is another factor, and as you know yourself, you’ve had far less problems with your Suzuki. But, that being said, you also have had the rare opportunity to ride and own one of the most intoxicating machines this world has to offer. For me, I’m just too tight to pay for that pleasure, 😁

In all honesty you sound a bit worried on that bike. I agree its had problems, and id be pissed off to but its a stunner....hot girls are high maintenance.I have a Busa....japanese rarely go wrong. Shes huge and terrifying, but i love the fear and id never sell her. She has twin Yoshis, and when i open my bike locker my adrenalin goes....every ride is a special occasion, and if you dont feel like that its time to sell.

Bit of a change from the usual. RSV4 owners usually can't stop going on about how amazing they are, when the subject is another bike (usually Ducati).

Honestly, I wouldn't regret buying this bike at all. It's a bike that you love and you should be proud that you have one regardless of how often you ride it! In my opinion this sounds so much better than a Ducati or Honda. Fight me in the comments if you disagree ;)
