Plus Gareth, its a bit strange it says 350g on the front of the package but 326g per serving! Is the packaging part of the total weight or am I been a bit dim!
70 grams of chicken and 280 grams of "sauce" for £2. I know M&S is more expensive but I had one last night... Vindaloo 400 grams total, 200 grams (50%) chicken breast for £4.51 (reduced). Still worth giving this one a go and I'm out shopping soon...it's on my list 😉 Thanks for another excellent review Gareth
Had this last night Gareth, wow! It's pretty damn good. I increased the heat with two teaspoons of Mr Naga and adjusted the sweetness with a teaspoon of Geetas mango Chutney. Added two slices of tomato and one of cucumber - it was exceptional, so thanks mate another review you've got SPOT ON!
The best supermarket curry I ever had were the Vindaloos from Asda but they long changed their recipe probably 10-12years ago, almost on par with what you’d get at a curry house. It’s a shame they’re gone as they were fantastic and really flavourful for such a hot dish, by the end I’d be pretty much numb, shaking and sweating. I love mega hot food but I prefer to deal with it at home rather than in public 😂
Morrison’s used to do the “Volcanic Vindaloo” which was pretty serious, what with a whole Naga chilli in it. About my limit, though they always gave me hiccups.
I can cope with most Phall's here so ordered a hall strength Pathia on holiday in Spain this year knowing how mild the Indian restaurant curry's are usually over there, my god it blew my head off😂😂! The Chef came out and asked if I was ok I told him I was dying and he laughed, he said he uses proper Indian Spice and not like what we get in the UK😮😮
I usually let these frozen curries thaw out for a few hours to let the chicken marinate in the sauce as it usually improves the curry, then microwave or cook it on the hob and the meat gets hotter quicker ;)
If this is the case I would be adding some more chicken to the curry. Some pre-cooked chicken, eg. a thigh from a supermarket deli. Let it marinate for an hour and then heat it up. Always think that runny curries are best served with naan or chapattis to soak up the sauce.
I batch-cooked a Phall with 4kg of chicken thighs using my own home-grown Carolina Reaper pods (3 medium-sized ones). The first taste was vicious, followed by hiccoughs and raw guts. The rest was frozen and the last of it was eaten about 3 months later by our son. He came to me with tears in his eyes. I'll have to seek this brand out to give it a try.
The hottest curry I had was from a restaurant in Grantham. Paid for it the next day though. Was out shopping with the mrs and got the urge. Luckily they had toilets. I was in there so long my wife got a member of staff to check I was OK!
Nice review Foodie, not had Indian food for a long time but the last one was in a restaurant and the Phall had Naga chilli's as an extra and trust me that was smoking my stomach and Butt 🥵
Nowt better than a ruby of a Friday night. Like yourself, the hotter the better! I'm also a 1/2 chips, 1/2 rice heathen. 🤣 Runny sauce = naan dippage! _Dippage_ is a technical term used by 3 Michelin Star chefs. Honest! 👍
Cant go wrong for £2! Have you tried the new Bom Bahia range of Indian food from Asda? They are really good and not your typical tasting supermarket Indian and side dishes, they actually taste like what you get from a restaurant but for half the price.
I've seen them added to the new range. Obviously they are more expensive than their regular Indian foods so would love a heads up in advance as to which ones to try.
I regularly eat the Vindaloo Heron one which is gorgeous and my kinda spice. I have the Phall one in the freezer and will have it tonight which will be spicier than Vindaloo! Can’t wait to try it! X
These currys were also in Farmfoods but were discontinued - they are also in B&M Express who have taken over a lot of Heron food locations, they are in different branding, but the tray inside is the giveaway. Its the Authentic food company. I wish theyd do the curry sauce frozen only and let us add the meat, as I think they are struggling on that for £2. The problem with the jars is they taste vingery because of the preservatives.
There's nothing whatsoever stopping you adding some chicken (or anything else for that matter) to the tweak the meal then heating it is there? We do that all the time when we want to add to dishes we love but find are short of meat etc. It comes down to cost. More chicken turns a £2 dish in £2.50...
Nice review as always, or should I say 'spot on' 😉 For meals like this I steam them rather than micowave/oven cook. Just feel it removes any chance of them drying out. Nothing scientific about the timing, just 45 mins to an hour, depending on the size
Used to work at a milk bottling plant at that Manchester address. Worst job I ever had..The plastic bottles used to explode if they bunched up and the handles cut your hands to shreds. We had to throw 3 each hand into them supermarket cages! Yeah, Sharston...Thanks for the reminder ;(
Good tip Gareth ... when stirring, chop up large chunks of chicken with kitchen scissors and immerse in hot sauce flavouring ... makes the meal stretch further ... and enhances flavour experience! If loads of sauce and little meat/veg ... stir fry extra of both and throw in the mix ready cooked.
Hi Gareth, these size curries like in Iceland are 375 grams. 350 grams is ones like in Heron foods, recently Lidl’s and now Morrison’s. That curry looked good to me but heat is about a low end Vindaloo 👍
Hi Gareth from Spain where it is definitely heading towards winter. Price-wise it's not bad but, as you know, I like to know what's really in summat like that so I prefer to make my own. Today I made a swineherd's pie (we had left over pork loin meat.) Tomorrow, I'm having sweet and sour chicken since i have some sauce left over from last time.
I like the tinned Asda chicken vindaloo, it's lovely, plenty of chicken, and a nice kick, it keeps creeping up in price but , for £2.25 but , it's worth it.
I tried one on your recommendation and have to agree with you...its really good. Coming in a tin it's always worthwile to keep a couple in the back of the cupboard. Cheers.
I used to eat Phaal in in restaurants donkeys years ago when i was insane really really hot.A madras is hot enough for me nowadays i'm going to give that one a go looks good great review mate.👍
Got to say the best curry I have had in a long time was Asdas main for two chicken balti, really lovely with big tender pieces of chicken, cost £4.00 but it is a good amount of product.
I had their chicken tikka masala in their meal pack for 2 last week (on offer at £7) and that was really good, including the sides. They seem to be changing their Indian meals for 2 at the moment. Their chicken vindaloo packed a punch yet still had flavour.
@@stephenmurray2851Tesco's tinned curries are superb - great standby and at about £2.50 a good deal. We like to add Sultanas, 1/2 teaspoon of curry powder and a packet of "Growers?" 35p rice - then uwave.
Genuinely going to be looking for this next time I visit Heron! Haven’t been for a long time but for a ready meal that’s a great price. Awesome detailed review as always!
Been having these for over a year now they are nice! I don't go to indian take aways anymore too expensive and portions get smaller hate being ripped off! We enjoy these for our treat night! Haven't had the phall though 😮🔥
HI Gareth, Gareth here, I went shopping yesterday to farm foods, fancied a curry, picked up farmfoods signature chicken Jalfezi, £3.99, gave it a go. Gareth, you have to buy it, it's as good as restaurant curry, lots of chicken, spicy, plenty of sauce to dip up. Was that good I went back today and got a butter chicken one, blown away by that too, creamy and loads of chicken and sauce! Get down there!!!
I think you'll find bigger savings than just at Heron Foods. I know several people who sold up in London and had enough money to buy several houses in Yorkshire. With rental income they will never need to work again.
Gareth, next time you do a curry review, try the Sharwood microwave poppadums. I was dubious but was pleasantly surprised. Follow the instructions carefully and they turn out quite well.
I love your videos man I can't seem to find that phall in heron tried Oldham and today tried Rhyl but in Rhyl they did have a vindaloo and it was amazing £2 bargain I could live off these, keep up the good work 👍
You could could put it in a saucepan and heat with the simmer setting for a while, that way the sauce will reduce. Microwave produces a lot of steam in side the container. Looked okay though.
Since Iceland have discontinued their scarily spicy range, this is up my ally. One of the main reasons i went into Iceland was for the pizza and the carolina reaper curry in that range. Hottest curry i ever had.
£2 is a good price nowadays. I really wish they'd use chicken thighs in these meals though as it's tastier, cheaper(so a bit more could be added) and more forgiving when cooking. Guess ppl have been convinced that chicken breast is best though :(
I like a hot curry, but I draw the line at 'Phall's'! I live in Manchester where famous 'curry mile' is from (not so famous now tbf cos a lot of the restaurants have been closed down🤣) and back in the 90's I tried a Phall at one of the more renowned places called 'The Shere Khan' and basically regretted it for the next 24hrs! Painful is not the word! Made the decision that a Jalfrezi and Madras were my heat limit from then on. 😉
Just had one of these last night, absolutely blew my head off haha!! First few spoonfuls were fine but the more I ate the more the heat intensified, it was worse on my throat then on my mouth though, still not as hot as a phall from an Indian restaurant but definitely still packs a lot of heat!
Even though my ethnicity is Indian, I don't like my meals to be EXTREMELY hot chilli wise, as the heat from the chillies becomes so overwhelming that you can't appreciate the other ingredients. Vindaloo is about as hot as I like. Mind you with a price tag of £2 I am very suspicious of the quality of the Chicken pieces. I am aware that I have on one or two occasions criticised British savoury meals, however there are a few British savoury meals that I rate highly, ie I absolutely love Sunday Roasts, and the Brits have done a great job with inventing the best method of making roast potatoes. Another great British savoury meal I love is Shepherd's Pie; though it would have been great if the original recipe included Bell Peppers and Sundried Tomatoes, which is how I make Shepherd's Pies. But for the most part British desserts and confectioneries score higher than British savoury meals.
My Irish friend in the US put peppers in her Shepards’s pie,and it is indeed an improvement on the original pie from home, hers is the only Shepherd’s pie I have ever liked.Only like Yorkshire pudding with jam,I also don’t like baked beans, though I do like beans in soups, and chili,I know I’m a strange English person food wise.
Hi Gareth, £2 from Heron food's, bargain you can't leave it there for that price. And you enjoyed it ,that's the main thing ,I know what I will be buying next time I'm in Wrexham I'm calling in Heron food's. Great video Take care😋👍
I used to get a phall from my local Indian and they used to put a whole boiled egg in it. It was lush. Sadly, that Indian came under new management, and has gone completely downhill now.
Tried several 'hot' frozen curries like you Gareth and my favourite is the Chicken Madras from Home Bargains. I'll have to come across to Barrow to shop at Heron Foods to try out this Phall. Thanks for the video.
Gareth £2 good value too hot for me chicken tikka my go to.i noticed asda do 2 for a fiver Indian meals only draw back 200grams per box so effectively your paying £5 for one portion if you're a growing lad.
Do not have a heron foods where I am but looks lovely. But as I watch all your videos I have been buying the Morrisons lamb curry you liked and it was lovely, had it with chips and naan bread. I take a lot from your reviews you are on the ball x
tesco do a microwave chicken curry with white rice for 85p for the price its really really good quite mild one and you get plenty hearty food co chicken curry and also diggers chicken balls £2.25 for 8 if on offer £3 if not 12 mins in air fryer on 210 brilliant best ones i have tried
I do anything vindaloo and hotter with either rice or pitta or naan bread so just a bit of curry heat can be done without that mouth burn. Hot curries taste much better after they've physically cooled quite a bit. The best hot curry is leftovers cold in the morning.
Got this in my freezer. Just had the hot chicken bhuna. Tbh the heron curries are all much of a muchness. The chicken bhuna i had could have easily been a madras. This phall im assuming will be exactly the same but with added chilli powder so basically hotter. But at the same time they're decent value for money. Two curries and two sides for a fiver. Aslong as you dont expect too much they're decent enough. The bhuna went down well with some pittas.
Pretty sure it were the Bhuna I had the other day, were banging and tbh spicer than I thought it’d be, reckon this Phall would be torture though for my gallbladder😆 can’t eat spice like I used to.
I love my curry`s and I grow my own Chilli`s but I tried Carolina Reapers and although eating them wasn`t too traumatic, getting rid of them the next day certainly was 🤣🤣👍👍
I do mine in a saucepan with my little balti wok covering the pan. No chips or rice though . I like my chapattis or tortilla wraps. After a few beers what's not to like.
Good review Gaz. I like hot food so I’ll be trying this. Noted your comments about not cooking this in a big oven. I have good news for you - you have a small oven next to the big one 😂
glad you enjoyed your curry, thanks for sharing, the hottest curry i can deal with is from my local Indian is a lamb rogan josh, or a sheesh kebab Turkish with Komal Patia sauce
It looked very nice! 👍👍Our local curry house does not have a phall on their menu I asked why and the manager guy said because it's too hot!! but he would cook for us.
Gaz , I tried this after your review and it was well nice, although I found it hot as ..... I'm a wuss with spicy food but I enjoyed , heron at the moment are doing deals with this range ; 2 mains amd 2 side dishes, I got a chicken phall , chicken biriani, bombay potato's and pilau rice all for a Jackson £5, bargain
It’s actually “phaal” - I had one at a curry night in a pub restaurant here in Taunton called The Coal Orchard - the hottest (in terms of spiciness) curry I have ever had! Just as well I had a pint of cider handy!
Man, I love a curry, normally a jalfrezi, madras or rogan with rice and/or chips. Eating out and even takeaways are so relatively expensive these days that I'm just not having them anymore. I need to see what iceland has to offer or cook up a big batch with pataks madras paste and freeze portions.
Top lad. Being a bit similar with the old shrinking packages, poundland batteries. Used to be £2 for 22 aa batteries, now 18. I sound so boring. Keep it going mate.
It may say Produced in the UK but so did Tescos and M & S but looking on the back is stated chicken from PRC. It was proper slimey, Aldi and LIDL use UK Chicken.
This looks like another great review. Obviously restaurants turn out a better meal🤔. But that comes at a high price. I watch this channel because it is all about reviewing food from different stores, and not restaurants. So with that in mind? For £2? I would certainly give it a go. Cook up some rice and maybe a Naan bread and your good to go. 👍🏻👍🏻. This is not something you make at home, as getting the Phall sauce just right would be difficult and I’ve never seen a Phall sauce on the shelf.
