Just an update on my progress... I broke my wrist about y weeks ago, had surgery 5 weeks ago having titanium plate and screws placed. I started doing your routine working up to about 10 times a day plus contrast baths. I followed up with my surgeon yesterday and he said that he has never seen such great progress in such a short time. He said I have 90% ROM. He said I should have 100% in 4 weeks. I start with a real Live PT tomorrow for strengthening. Thank you so much!

I am so glad that you have found these videos. I have more and will try to post them asap so that you can have as much info as possible. But these will not take the place of therapy. If yoiu can combine these with a few sessions at least of therapy you will have the greatest benifit.

Three days out of cast very for radio fracture very stiff good amount of swelling and scar tissue. First doctor said I should get surgery by the time I saw the second opinion doctor it was 15 days and he said no to surgery. second day out of cast and I've got about 25% range of motion in my wrist. Doing exercises often maybe every 45 minutes for 5 or 10 minutes no pain afterwards is it okay to keep doing it I want to heal quick.

I haven't attended my first PT appointment since the removal of my cast but I am frustrated with the limitations of the range of motion of my wrist. I did a few of your exercises and see a great improvement within the range of motion that I have. Thank you for the time you invested in the making of this video.

I've found a lot of 'bad' videos on this subject throughout youtube in my search to heal my wrist, but you'rs is amongst the best. Thank you very much for your no-nonsense, helpful video. I had a distal radial fracture august 30th, ORIF on the 31st. I had on a splint until September 8th at first ortho f/u appointment. The doc said I did not need a hard cast and that I needed to start PT or OT. I don’t have insurance so I have to do these exercises myself. But isn’t it too soon to be moving my wrist? The bones haven’t even had tine to heal. There is still swelling and I have very limited range of motion and with pain. Please let me know if it’s too soon to start exercises.
@LaBordeTherapy
@LaBordeTherapy 3 года назад
Let your Dr. know that you cannot go to therapy and ask him if you can start the exercises that I am suggesting. It is most likely OK if he referred you to therapy but be sure. Often the movement will actually help with healing if done correctly. Only actively, not pushing with the other hand.

Don't give up, ask your PT if there is a dynamic splint that might help. These are similar to braces that are put on teeth. They use rubberbands, or springs or some type of traction to put a slow stretch on your wrist and can be very helpful in stubborn cases.

Thanks a million for the video. I got a Q for you. My wrists were cuffed and then beaten by some mafia gang in a 3rd world country.They had mistaken me for someone else. That happened about one year ago. I got the feeling back to my thumb (was numb) after 6 moths, but the wrists (esp. my left ) hurts when I pull or lift some objects. Both wrists feel "woogly"/ not as solid (strong) as before. Are there any exercise you can suggest for me ? Thank you.

I don't know if it is worse breaking it thus way or the more common way. Terrible swelling at first when cast removed. A lot better as far as that goes. I can't bend my hand up at all, only down. Terrible. I am almost 64. Can't make a fist even though doung those exercises.

Hello, I am not sure about the difference between the thumb a duction and the thumb extension. I have reviewed the video many times and I’m not seeing the difference. Also on the wrist extension exercise is it OK if I have my arm resting on the edge of a table? If I try holding my arm up in the air like you are I end up bending my whole arm instead of just my wrist.
@LaBordeTherapy
@LaBordeTherapy 17 дней назад
yes, it is best to rest your arm on the edge of the table Thumb Extension: Place the palm of your hand flat on a table. Then stretch your thumb out, or open as wide as you can while keeping your hand and thumb flat on the table. The goal would be to form and "L" with your thumb and index finger. Thumb Abduction: Similar to above , but you do not keep your hand flat on a table. Pull your thumb away from the palm of your hand with the same goal, to make an "L" with your thumb and index finger.

My fingers and thumb were numb until this week...my fingers now have feeling except for part of index finger and my thumb slight. My thumb is not flexible. Won’t bend at any joint. Any advice ...thank you. I am supposed to be rolling over palms up and palms down. Very very difficult ..
@LaBordeTherapy
@LaBordeTherapy 5 лет назад
Marge, it sounds like you may have had a very complicated fracture and these take longer to heal. Its hard to rotate the forearm in some casts, so I would suggest doing this very gently and wait until this is removed to expect much improvement. Numbness - be sure to let your physician know about this and work on your sleeping and sitting posture - explained in the video. You want to really watch "kinking the hose" as described in the video so your nerve can have the best atmosphere for healing. The rest I cannot give you advice with out seeing you. You may want to ask your physician if you can see a hand therapist now for home exercises at least one time before the cast is removed.

Hello. About two months ago, I was angry so I punched a wooden couch which caused my wrist to hurt really and I'm also not able to move it as far as the other one. It's been a long time now and I'm starting to worry about it, since it hasn't been broken or anything. Is it normal? Will I ever recover the possibility of moving it to it's full potential again? Should I do some exercises? Thank you for your response. I'm 16, by the way, if that could possibly help.

@LaBordeTherapy
@LaBordeTherapy 5 лет назад
This is a question for your physician as only he will know how your healing has progressed and how hard you can be pushed. If he has OK'd active ROM you can certainly do all the Active exercises - that is the ones that you use your own muscles for but do not push with your non affected hand.

You should get them approved by your Dr. Ask him if you can do Active Range of motion. This is probably OK if your cast is removed. Just remember the one hour rule and do not force movement. Just move it "actively" with your own muscles like I show in the video. But get approval from your physician, This is an area of the wrist where there is low blood supply so you want to follow his instructions carefully.

Do you think if a sprain in the wrist was derelict and still train with the pain for a week, will it lead to tendonitis? Cause my sprain or what pain it is, was still coming back when I train, but the inflammation was gone, its 6 months old now and I dont want to make it last longer, anyone help me?

Mark Its hard to tell with out seeing you. But I would follow the 1 hour rule as described in the videos and focus on isometric strengthening until the pain is gone. There are many problems that are serious that can cause pain in the wrist. I would suggest you go to a physician who is a Hand Specialist and then see a CHT - Certified Hand Therapist. Hope that helps and let me know what the result is.

Okay, I tried the one hour rule.. Is it correct that I started to the wrist exercises and skip the finger ones? Ive tried it today and I stop, because when I do a fist and moves my wrist upwards theres a little bit pain on where my wrist pain is, but the other exercises are fine... And after some repetitions and rest, I would massage my wrist and theres something popping inside (This also occurs every morning and after taking a Bath, I dont know why).. Should I continue with it?

I can't thank you enough. These exercises are more inclusive and thoroughly explained than others I have found online, and they have enabled me to increase my wrist extension and rotation for the first time. I had been worried that I would never be able to rotate my palm upward to more than a 45-degree angle again. My doctor tells me almost nothng about what I can expect in terms of range and pain longterm as he fears liability for a mistake that was made by the clinic. The ulnar distal head protrudes a disconcerting amount and I am afraid that a misalignment was set.

Similar here. My cast was too tight and has left me with a disfigured hand, especially thumb alignment and a hollowed out palm. Also, less blood flow to my thumb, surgeon suggested an operation, taking a vein from my arm to my thumb. He mentioned necrosis. All this from a very tiny fracture in one of the smallest of bones. If I could go back, I would decline the acrylic cast, there's no room for error as they set so rapidly, it can't be adjusted, only removed and recast. Just a hand/wrist splint would have been enough, but it's too late now. I hope you have a better outcome than I do.

You could definitely rip the tendon if it is not healed enough to move. Only your Dr and Hand Therapist can tell you if you are ready for exercise. Please do not do any exercise until you have geen given specific ones b yyour Dr. of Hand therapist.

Look for a Certified Hand Therapist - you can find one in your area by going to the "Americal Society of Hand Therapists". I wish you the best.

Remember the 1 hour rule and cut back if pain is increased for more than one hour or it begins to swell. If it is painful, check with your medical provider about continuing, and be sure you are cleared for exercise by them.

I think following the instructions on this video may help you. You may have fractured this - so please see a physician first and get his approval before doing any type of exercise. But for a "boxers " fracture - this would be the program that we would us. How are you doing now?

Its hard to help you without knowing the total picture of what is going on. Ask your therapists if the video exercises would be helpful or if possibly some type of splint would assist in your rehab If this has helped you at all - please like - and possibly comment on Facebook. facebook.com/LabordeTherapyCenter?pnref=lhc

Thank for a very patient and thorough explanation of these excersices. Just been cleared off from the doc after 1 month of a fracture! I've had a distal radius fracture and doing any kind of wrist turning is still a bit painful, even a bit. Also i'm a bit sad that I'm able to do very little at this point! But I guess it will take some patience and perseverence!

Thank you Camarila! I know you will not give up. It would be great if you could find a Certified Hand Therapist in your area to help you get through the rehab. But if not I have tried to give you as much info as possible to help in the process.

@@LaBordeTherapy Thank you for your concern. I've been to the a doctor in fracture clinic and they just showed a few basic excerisices and said I can look up excersices on the internet and go be free :D. I'm fine with that! My fingers weren't as difficult to start moving as the wrist! it's a bit difficult to find specialists where I live (Orkney).
