Talking about personal regrets is always a difficult topic especially if that involves kids. In today's video I react to parents who open up about regretting having kids. There's this idea that if you say that you regret having kids that must mean you don't love your children and I don't think that's true. The decision to have kids is such a big one and often only the perks and good things about having kids are talked about. Having kids vs not having kids is a debate that will never end. Parenthood is a great option if you want kids, but if you find yourself deciding that might not be the path for you, then living a childfree by choice lifestyle might be a better fit. We need to talk about the full truth of having a baby: the positive and the challenging. Having all the information puts us into a better place to make an informed decision about kids vs child free.

The unfair reality is that there simply are more options for people who regret not having children than for those who had them and wish they could take it back or wait a little longer. Older women can always adopt/foster, try fertility treatments, freeze eggs, and/or nanny/mentor other people’s children. Once you birth a child your only option is putting them into the system where there are already thouisands & thousands in need of a home. Society (especially men) carries a romanticized idea of parenting & get the culture shock of their lives when it’s too late to go back. Don’t do it if you’re not enthusiastic about parenting - it’s the child who will suffer immensely.

This is so true, like my husband, who had this whole fantasy of repeating his supposed great childhood in the next generation, except I didn't have a great childhood and wanted to have time before kids. Another thing he seemed to forget quickly is that his mom had all of her twenties to work and accomplish things before having kids starting in her thirties, so we were going to do the same, but then suddenly did an about face and pushed to have kids at the onset when I was only 20 and hadn't done anything yet. Well, so much for my hopes and dreams, only to get compared to his mom when things weren't perfect (my mom wouldn't do that) and so on. No, I wasn't enthusiastic about parenting at all.

@bremd2018
@bremd2018 3 года назад
@@Nicoleiia it honestly is and I am a mother of one from my marriage and I can tell you from experience the God’s honest truth is that kids are an anchor that will pull you down. Society and the majority around you flat out lie about the realities of parenting. Everyone does want you to join the club to normalize this and it’s really sad that misery loves company and most women don’t want to be honest to one another to prevent these types of regrets because once that baby is here you cannot go back and are stuck. Marriage doesn’t solidify anything because most people that are older or that are brought up traditionally will tell you that getting married and having children is a priority and that when done in that order that you are secured. I thought I was in the clear when I married because we gave our relationship time and he was always a gentleman that always was amazing to me and my family. But nothing but change stays the same... People constantly change, outgrow each other, may want something different in life, or may cheat. And I’ve even heard of cases where men leave because the child taking all of the attention and care. It can pull couples apart because the lack of time, energy, and frustration of the responsibility of the child being one-sided on the mother. It’s a fairytale that our society pushes with marriage, kids, the white picket fence and the dog. And I was in that harsh reality after I had to file for divorce. I looked up the statistics and quickly learned that children are permanent, relationships/marriage is more than likely temporary. And no matter the outcome the mother is held solely responsible for the child. And you will be tied to the father and in some cases to his family for life. Most will say 18 years but you will attend the child’s graduation, wedding, holiday gatherings, etc. So if they ended up being crappy in the relationship or you can’t stand anyone in their family, you are stuck with all of them too. Also, the people that pushed for you to have a marriage and children will not help you with your child when you need to work, have peace, exercise, want to go out to eat, travel, etc. This causes everything that was listed in the video: depression, weight gain, poverty, debt, career suicide, and overall regret. Your dreams are not put on the back burner because if you have no support, which many married and single mothers don’t, it’s 18 years of your life! That’s almost two decades! And no one prefers to make a career change or go back to school that late in life. I take pride in being honest to other women and men that ask or are hinting towards the topic because of family, friends, or people judging them with misleading comments like they are “missing out”. Hunny you are not, you will never be able to miss out on any opportunities, giving you an advantage in life. I have literally sat in an interview while married and when asked if I had a child, I confirmed and was told “thank you for your time”. Most employers do not respect motherhood and look at you as less valuable because you don’t have flexibility and if anything happens with your child being sick or childcare cancels last minute, you will always call out. You have peace whenever you want or need it, if anything drastic like this pandemic happens you will not be screwed because daycares and schools shutdown and you still may want to keep your child at home to avoid your child or you contracting the virus. I am in all of this now and no family nearby helped, my mother is not even working but wants to cater to her new marriage, which is her choice, despite her cries for marriage and grandchildren. Mind you she was married to my father for 18 years and they divorced when I was 8 and she had to raise me and my sibling as a single mother but she had around the clock help from her parents who were also retired. So I had to use my savings to move us from Texas to Florida where my grandmother offered to help with my 7 year old. This part of Florida has no opportunities career wise, the economy here is in no comparison to Dallas, but I have childcare with someone I can trust to work a job from home that I wouldn’t if I was child free. I was a pre med student in Texas but I had to withdraw when the shutdown occurred whereas everyone continued online and I couldn’t because my son’s school shutdown and his classes are now online. I love my son more than anything in this world but this has been a traumatic experience. I had to give up my life and everything else in it that made me happy to be his mother. Many mothers are going through this, especially during this pandemic but are too ashamed to say it due to the fear of being criticized. I am hoping to transfer to a university here in Florida since my grandmother is a tremendous help but I am constantly haunted to have a plan B because she is up in age... Meanwhile my son’s father (ex husband) is traveling the world in the military and always declines helping with anything but wants our son for some holidays to show him off to his family and the internet to portray himself as a father. So I say all of this to say, always put you and your wants and needs first because no one else will. Everyone will choose themselves and that’s their individual right and choice. Always do what’s best for you unapologetically. ❤️

@@bremd2018 Thank you, Bre! I know it's been a lot on your plate and thank you for sharing that. You are right. The same people who are shaming, pressuring, or convincing you to have children will NOT be there when you need help. Plus, raising a child will almost always fall on the woman, not the man. Unfortunately, I don't ever think there will be a real discussion about this because too many women are prideful and don't want to admit they are overwhelmed or they made a "mistake" (I don't think children are a mistake however). They would rather pull their peers into motherhood to make themselves feel better. Sadly, when you are women and choose not to have children, women around you will turn on you quickly. I am 33 and it has been like this since my mid 20s. But, atleast you only have 1 child to take care of. I usually have more issues with women who have multiple children and they are the most hateful towards me. Being a woman makes you have to decide tough choices. Choosing not to have children wasn't an easy choice, but I feel it is the right choice for me. Not to be anti-man, but I don't trust men enough to convince me to have a child because of what you stated. He can take off without a care in the world, and you are left taking care of everything and it's just too unfair. Motherhood has a lot of moving parts and other mothers need to portray the full picture, not just what suits them.

So they had her, gave her material things, left her with nannies, and continued living their child-free life. When they went on vacation, they never took her as a kid. When she got old enough, they would leave her home alone with a credit card. When she graduated, they dropped her off at college and rarely called her or visited her. It’s always a competition with women. Men do it differently, but for women it’s a lot about being a mother. There are the moms and the non moms. The moms think they have a one over and they look at you like you lost. But really I find that more are opting out of motherhood and it punches holes in their thin veneer. The mothers are now losing because more childfree are coming out and expressing the choice to not have them.

It's honestly quite horrible when parents regret having had children. Not only did they ruin their own lives just because societal pressures told them to, but they have also condemned their kids to growing up feeling unwanted, which is truly horrible and can leave a lasting impact. I'm childfree by choice and have had to endure many people trying to convince me to have kids when it's none of their business, but I've put my foot down with all those people and with society. I'm not having any kids of my own, because I know it would ruin my life. I know I would regret having them, and because of that I would resent them, and you cannot really love someone you resent. I'm not about to do that to myself or to the nonexistent kids. Maybe we do have to give credit to people for owning up to making a bad decision for themselves, but considering it's a decision that doesn't just affect them and also affects the life they created, perhaps they should have thought about it more before making the decision.

In the past children were of course loved, but they were seen as a work-force, a continuation of the family name and wealth (aristocracy) and a security for their parents in their senior years. Society has changed so much and when it comes to having children, reality is often overlooked. In addition, in the past children didn't cost so much like today. They were a plus because at the right age they could work and give their contributions to the family. Today is a very different story. I live in Jamaica, and the patriarchy is real! I grew up in the US and realized I didn't want kids from waaaaayyyy back! I live with my Dad, and at this point, we're roomies with tons of inside jokes. Plus he cooks 😁. The notion of women must have kids is strong here, because ehe you're dealing a patriarchalnreligion where women are lesser than, it's how people are taught to think and are taught not to question. My neighbor's wife died. He's 91 now, can't cook for himself or clean and he's lonely. HE HAS A BUNCH OF KIDS AND GRANDKIDS. His kids and grandkids have lives of their own and can't spend their days with him keeping him company. I go over every once in a while, but I work from home. The notion that you're giving birth to people who will take care of you in your old age is a myth that people can't lose because it means they would have to question everything they've been taught. Being a woman who realizes she has choices is a bit dangerous, because we show people that what they've been taught isn't necessarily true. But hey, I laugh in the face of danger!😉

One of the few wise things my Mom ever said was it is "ur" baby 24/7....her husband did help but he worked all the time...I ask her one day if she appreciated the fact that she was able to stay home while her husband provided the check? She again told me that she missed going out with her friends and that she did not like to be tied down. Definition of Selfish: "lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure". Bringing children into this world is actually a selfish act. People have children because they want to. Children didn't ask to be born. Pay attention to the keywords "You Want". "You wanted" to leave a legacy, "you wanted" a family, "you wanted" someone to take care of you when you get older, "you wanted" experience the love and bonding with your own children...etc. It's all about YOU! It's what "you wanted". YOU wanted to have children despite all the suffering the child will endure. It's literally the epitome of selfishness. Raising children is a selfless act, but the decision to actually have children is a selfish one. That doesn't mean having children isn't a beautiful thing. It is! Let's just not pretend like it wasn't all about you.

We need to have this conversation so so bad. 1. There are a lot of people out there who regret having kids / hate the parent live but still love their kids and treat them well. I see that in a lot of people who have kind of a 'close friend' relationship with their parents. People who have regrets about parenthood aren’t automatically monsters. 2. 'talking about this must be horrible for the children' - I lived my whole life with this vague idea in my head that my mother didn’t love me the way a mother should. We never talked about it, until I’ve quite recently told her that I don’t want kids and she slipped into that conversation that if she had the choice today, she probably wouldn’t have them either. I knew at that moment - and it gave me a sense of peace I haven’t felt in my whole life. Why ? Because it was only at this point that I could accept that it wasn’t about something that was inherently wrong with me as a person, but that it was something about her internal struggles. It allowed me to move on. A lot of children of those parents who don’t fall under the category I’ve mentioned under 1. just KNOW. They know, whether you have an open conversation about it or not. Yeah, you might not want to tell your 7 year old 'I regret having you' right to their face, of course not. But talk to someone. Acknowledge the way you feel. Find people with the same struggles. Try to find a way that will get the best possible outcome of this, with the least damage to your children, find ways to make the best of the situation. And know you are NOT alone, unlike you’ve been told all this time. Parenthood isn’t a safe way to happiness and we should stop propagating it as such.

So many people cannot afford their children. I didn't have the health or finances for children. Even if they can afford them, this life is full of serious, unforeseeable problems. Children expect too much and are angry and resentful of parents who do their best for them but are not perfect. Peers influence children more than parents do. Parents don't really know this. It often becomes a nightmare--all the time. Children need the stability of their two young parents-- not grandparents all the time. Unmarried women try hard but it doesn't work. Job security doesn't exist anymore. It is a chaotic world with way too many people who want the same things that they can't afford. I cared for my elder relatives for 21 years and loved them. It was beyond hard. People with children sit around waiting for relatives to die to get an inheritance that they blow through on extravagances. Or things just don't work out no matter what.. Love is important. There are so many unloved people and no one cares at all.

I am reading the book "the baby matrix" at this moment and this is a great book to read for everyone in my opinion 🙂 it puts the pronatalism driven assumptions in a good realistic perspective.

You can regret having a kid, but still commit to being an awesome parent, because you respect your kid and children in general. People don't realize that having a child and becoming a parent are interdependent. A lot of people say, "I want a baby," but what they really need to say is, "I want to become a parent." That's a serious, incredibly consuming job, in many ways. You are basically saying, "I want to accept this extremely demanding job with zero pay." If you think of it in those terms, then you start to understand what parenting actually is, and that simply wanting to have a baby is not a sufficient reason. You have to want to take care of someone, you have to want to teach someone, you have to want to be there for someone, to protect someone, to provide for someone-- for the rest of your life. Most people who want kids don't realize how intense of a commitment it is, because few people talk very openly about the challenges. Most talk about the rewards. And yes, there are rewards. It's a fucking trip and a euphoric feeling holding the child you created, and them snuggling into you and saying, "I love you mommy." But along with that incredibly euphoric moment, comes hours and hours of back-breaking work, exhaustion, lack of personal time, lack of quality time with your partner, etc etc. So yes, people can be excellent parents while simultaneously regreting their decision to accept the job of parent. And they're not monsters for admitting that. They are honest about what this job actually entails.

I'm a woman who does not have children. My mother died when I was 4 years old. I have attachment issues, in sense of becoming 'overly attached' to individuals in an obsessive, unhealthy way. I do not wish to have another mother-child symbiosis because the original mother-child bond I had was brutally severed. I desire instead for a small close knit group of friends and to help other people in life.

My partner and i recently had a contraceptive failure. He wants kids as soon as possible. I really don't care if i have kids or not. Its just something i don't think about.🤷 we talked about how we were gonna handle this and i immediately went for the plan b pill. I could tell he was disappointed but having a broken condom is no excuse to let that shit hide. 💯✌🙌

Better tell your partner that there is no rush to have children. It's something that both of you are on board for, as for your "I don't care if I have kids or not." is a bit concerning cause it's a serious life decision. I am 22 years old and I already know that I want no children. I made it clear to my current partner about it, but said when we were fine financially and so on that I'd be willing to do foster first, and just maybe adoption.

It’s same when you have only one child they pressure you to give them a sibling! I regret having my son at 23 wish I had him 30 im 28 this month and almost where I wanna be in life it’s hard being a single mom with a 4 years old trying to juggle a career I definitely don’t want anymore to be honest but I want a mate I hope he wouldn’t want any or maybe comes with his own so I won’t have to have more it’s a lot on my mental health sigh 😔 and I’m good with my son only I’m happy and don’t want to share my resources etc with another child lol

Sounds like me, I wanted to wait till I was 30 and have my 20's to accomplish something myself, cause I knew if the kids came first, that probably wouldn't happen, but my husband, who was originally on board with that, suddenly changed his mind and pushed to start a family right away. Well, he got his way (like most men usually do) except it screwed everything up for me because it was the wrong way around, so all it did was fill me with resentment and I still to this day haven't accomplished a damn thing.

People should absolutely be very well informed about what life is going to be like with kids. Couple friends have said to me that I actually had a way more realistic picture of what parenthood is, than they or their friends did. Maybe that's one reason I never ever wanted kids. Some said they don't regret having the kid, but if they knew how their life would change, they'd have waited a lot longer until having kids.

Cancer runs in my family. I'll be lucky to make it to 50 without having some type of cancer. This is why I don't have kids. I don't want my kids to watch their parent go through cancer (like I did) or even die. And I fear they will develop cancer too. One day, when I'm diagnosed, I will have no regrets about not having kids. No one seems to understand this. And think I'm being selfish when I believe I'm doing the opposite 🤷

I feel that people who choose to be childfree have often examined the pros & cons & put more thought into their decision than people who have kids & this may contribute to the regret. They were maybe sold a romanticised idea of parenthood, bought into the idea that they should have them coz that's just what you do,didn't think they had a choice or felt the baby would just fit into their life as it is-or all of the above! There is no trial run with parenthood & I'm so glad to find channels like this to help make sense of my feelings & not feel alone. ❤️

Thanks for posting. This has helped my wife and I confirm our decision NOT to have kids, though at one point we were open/ready for them. But it's so very true, for anyone not 100% committed and desirous to have children, they shouldn't do it. The older I get, the more it seems the root of the world's problems and unhappiness stem from unwanted pregnancies, especially when it comes to poverty and violent crime. But I think humanity is getting better and better, though if you focus too much on the news, that's hard to believe.

When I was a young girl, about 9 or 10, I remember playing with friends and having no interest in playing "house" and I always had the hardest time trying to pick my future baby's names. I'm now 29 and happily married, but still don't get excited about the idea of being a mom to a child. And for the life of me, I still can't think of any future baby names probably because I really just don't want one. I think I knew from a young age that being a parent wasn't the life I pictured for myself.

Hannah I watched this video before as well lol I've been researching parental licensing all week. I swear way too many people have no idea what being parents is about, even after they have become parents smh However, was also learning about adopting. Foster parents, especially the good ones, seem even better equipped than actual parents, coz they are assessed by the state and have to fulfil requirements. If they don't, the kids are taken away from them. Sorry, this comment isn't necessarily related to this video, but hey, these topics are very interesting lol. Happy new year

Being honest is good, however the irony is even if you think you have done a good job as a parent your children will let you know all the times you screw up and how damaged they are because of you. As a parent, I’ve always thought there never has been enough education on parenting, how to connect with your kids, how to deal with the stress when they are little and even more so when they are teens, how to deal with abuse mentally from teens etc... I always wanted children, ALWAYS from the time I was 12, but never knew I’d feel so alone in the parenting or decisions that need to be made for the kids and how many of your demons and the things you struggle with come out during your training of your kids. Plus let’s take a second to talk about how to deal with your feelings when the things you hate about yourself are things you see in your children.
@WifeWithoutKids

Good point. I've always wondered why high schools (back in my day, maybe it's different now) didn't include more practical education like financial planning and other life skills. Those are things that would be so beneficial to learn at a younger age because being more informed affects how we make decisions.

This is such a good watch! I’m at an age where I should already have multiple children, so I’m told. Constantly. I’m indifferent about having them, and that’s just my mind. I don’t see how my decision has any impact on anyone else. Yet, the in-laws think they have a right to constantly, literally constantly, ask us when we are giving them grandchildren. 2020 was a year that brought surgery following on from losing my period for ten months (which I wasn’t stressed about, it’s just how my body was working at the time), but they don’t know this detail, and they don’t know how long we may or may not have been trying. I get so angry how people are allowed to comment on someone’s status, but heaven forbid that person should have a personal say. Or even worse, not seeing they NEED to have a say. Humans 🙄
