X-MEN 97 Episode 5 Goes So Hard, It SHOCKED Me! 

Gambit just showed the world why he's one of the best. He puts on an act but deep down he's a true Gentleman and selfless Hero.

Not gonna lie, Magneto speaking his last words in German, much like his parents must have to him during the Holocaust, that's a pretty smart idea. Though bummed Nightcrawler doesn't acknowledge Rogue as his sister as they are family, which is something X-Men Evolution did after it was revealed.

This episode devastated me, seeing one of my childhood icons sacrifice himself and die a hero. 😔

Honestly was hoping Gambit was gonna say something like "Laissez les bons temps rouler" which is Cajun for Let the Good Times Roll when he makes his final stand. Essentially "It's a Good Day to Die" which would've been fun since he is Cajun and that's a pretty famous cajun saying.

I'm pretty sure Cable will undo all of these deaths because he said "Not Again" He was trying to prevent Madelyn's death and all the mutants. There's obviously some time travel stuff that's going on.

1. Cable's appearance confirms a suspicion I've had since episode 3. That there is some time travel shenanigans happening. The implication that Cable has tried to stop the events of this episode from happening multiple times could explain the continuity goofs, at least somewhat, and that they *are* building up to something 2. Otherwise this episode is *dark* , but I appreciate it. Especially since the Sentinels feel like a serious threat. Gambit going out like a boss was the highlight of the episode tho, even though I'm almost sure they'll bring him back.

Even after being fired, lead writer/ producer Beau DeMayo is still talking on Twitter, not about why he was fired, but basically accepting his flowers figuratively for this episode. I believe he said something of the sort that this is just a warm uo wait until episodes 8 through 10 that's his opus. Now this worries me. If the show is good because of him but they fired him and they plan on doing a season 3 which wont have him on the writing team (he wrote season 2 already), then what will the quality of season 3 be like in comparison? And Onlyfans aside (since he had it for years so Disney must have known), what does that bode for why he was really fired? Was it also a conflict of ideas? Did the rest of the staff want to take the show off fhe rails and he objected of he wanted it to stay truer to the source? Because we all know how Disney can get...

Can someone explain how the whole "Rogue can't touch anyone" thing makes any continued sense in a world that's already been shown to have power-suppressing collars which can completely disable any mutant power? Can't Rogue just slap one of those on like a gaudy gold choker whenever she wants to get frisky and touch anyone to her heart's content? Heck, it's not even any different in practicality from the visor that Scott wears to control his power. I'm sure Beast could tweak one to the point that Rogue could turn her powers off and on at will, or any power level in between the same way Cyclops can control the power and spread of his ocular blasts. Just wondering if this has ever been addressed, because every time I see another mopey Rogue scene where she bemoans not being able to be intimate with anyone, I just scream internally about the obvious solution to all her problems.

I really hope the MCU includes Gambit. And not just some cameo. We've been waiting for him forever.

I’ve loved gambit from the beginning. I always seen him this way. The coolest most stylish X-men ever. Great fighter, cool powers, ladies man, and heroic. For some reason marvel always removes him from the spot light. They claim he’s too much like wolverine. Man gambit is better more complex than wolverine, more fun than cyclops , just as funny as iceman and just as dark as sabertooth. I’ve always seen it. To finally see it on display really is what got me emotional. Then he dies. Man , the marvel needs a character like this! He went out exactly the way he told jubilee in the very first episode of the og series “ with style petite, with style”.

Invincible may have all the hardcore moments of this episode, but it lacks the X-men's emotional weight.

Introducing Cable in the same episode, as you noted, tells you time travel will be used to undo some of the key events (I for one want Banshee back) so I wasn't as upset as many seem to have been, but very enjoyable. This has become a weekly series, on D- mind you, that I look forward to watching. Shocking. And thank you for being an honest critiquing voice on this series. Night crawler is the best X-men. He always has for me. His powers are simple but effective, he has a really cool look, I’ve always loved his pirate Shtick, and he just has a really lovable personality.

There is mutant power suppressors out there. The collars, for example, why can't Beast or Forge develop tech that you can wear on your wrist or something, so Rouge can be with Gambit?

In the comics, Rogue was already an adult when she and Magneto were in the Savage Land and developing feelings for one another. But then Magneto executed Zaladane and re-embraced his former ways, leaving a heartbroken Rogue to clean up following the big battle of that story arc. It wasn't until the Age of Apocalypse storyline wherein the alternate Rogue and Magneto were married with a kid that the whole thing was realized. Later on, Rogue is finally able to control her powers enough she can touch Gambit and that's when their relationship takes off. That's in the comics. In the TV adaptations, everything gets condensed and rewritten. That's where everything goes horribly, terribly wrong.

I think now we know why they didn't ask Gambit's original voice actor to reprise his role for this show.

Yea, Gambit has always been my favorite X-Man. &, I would have been the most upset over his death ( as epic as it was), had Cable not popped up in the episode. Expecting a time loop episode now...🤓

This episode was SO GOOD. I was really worried at the end of episode 2 that Gambit finding out about Rogue and Magneto would have him do something jealous and stupid but instead he just acts like a mature adult

Yet again the most sober review of the show so far, thank you! Certainly the best review as well. There's a teaser trailer for the rest of the season. That combined with little hints throughout the episodes, it looks like it's a giant conspiracy between powerful players. That's why so many people have a hard time pinning who is behind the attack, it's not one individual, but quite a few, even some that have yet to make a first time appearance in the show but have their presence sprinkled as hints throughout the episodes. They had to come out and confirm that Xavier's sister won't be the culprit because everyone was pointing to her due to her being the one in the comics who did the deed. Holy moly i laughed at the magpedo nick name, that is gold right there. Rogue and Gambit were my two top stars as well in the original. I love all of them, but those two were at the forefront. So this whole magpedo thing was especially weird, unnecessary and messed up. Also yes thank you, this version of rogue (the retcon version) was absolutely atrocious this episode. Even breaking up with someone that is an absolute terrible thing to do to a ex partner especially if they parted on good terms. 10/10 review again, my man, will be back for more. My prediction, we going to see the huge fallout of what these attacks have caused as well the additional domino plans against the x-men which will probably start swatting down more members of the team. So that the only way to fix the situation at all is with Cable's mission. Just a guess.

The one thing the ppl behind this series have over the original is guts. Bc the ppl behind the original series in the 90's, they were too afraid of making fans mad by killing off, a beloved character they created Morph. I don't blame them for being afraid. Bc of the '86 Transformers movie killing off Optimus Prime. They wanted to avoid that kind of backlash.

This review is top notch especially the intro. That was exactly what I was thinking when Gambit died. Like you, I'm also critical about this show, but I wanted to reserve judgement until either the end of the season or the show because I was thinking that some of the plot holes would be addressed later on. If not addressed I'll have no problems tearing this apart. When it comes to episode like this, it's a curse to wait week by week. I kinda had a feeling that something was going to happen when the episode was past the 25 min mark, but damn.

I do hate Rogue and Magneto being together. I do not, however, think it is bad writing exactly. Rogue being as touch starved, and affection starved, as she is, would definitely be drawn under the spell of such a charismatic and articulate leader like Magneto. I can definitely believe it could happen. I do. And if that had happened she would probably ignore most of the red flags because of what it means to her. Being unable to touch is massive to her for good reasons. It is doubtless a retcon of the highest order because somebody wanted to make it a thing and ignored the history of the show to make it happen. I hate that. And the episode itself is overall one of the best damn pieces of media put out.

Totally agree!! This was awesome I cried. This had first time seeing the Avengers in the MCU vibes but deeper. My boy Gambit! But saying Rogue & Magneto were together before was wrong. Only complaint. The appearance of Cable made me certain we have been watching an alternate timeline.

The easiest way to have the attack matter while saving the characters is to pull a Chrono Trigger. (Pull them out at the moment of death in a stable time loop.) You can even have stuck in a "can't fight fate" loop trying to save them. Or Apokolips. Raise Magneto and Gambit as horsemen, think they've both been one in the comics.

Get over the Rouge/Magneto thing. She's a Louisiana swamp rat. They start makin' pups when they's five!

Rewatching it, you will see the theme of "touch" and "feel" are woven inextricably through all of the plotlines.

I wasn't even gonna watch this whole show until this review... okay, I can't believe that I'm going to say this Disney actually managed to pull this off. It's like the old show, but now it's allowed to be truly mature. The only thing holding it back now is the short series length forcing them to rush every storyline to cram it all in. It's like they weren't sure they would get a year 2 so they have jammed as much into this series as possible, rushing through the whole Goblyn Queen saga AND Nathan being taken into the future(although not by the A'skanni apparently). Then they give us ALL of the Gambit /Rogue drama from the whole show in ONE ep and IT"S FRIGGIN AMAZING. Plus, I AM a big Scott/Jean fan, and always have been. X-Men 30 is my most prized comic from the 90's, the decade I spent thousands of dollars in a local comic shop buying anything with an X on the cover pretty much entirely because of this show. XMen Animated is why I collected Marvel, BTAS/STAS is why I collected DC. This is bringing it all back. Again, it's woke Disney with it's narcissistic DEI hires, how the hell did this slip through the cracks? Looks like we are getting Sinister and Apocalypse back for one last hurrah because I doubt Disney will put out the cash for another year of this.

11:30 *sigh* There is NO indication that Rogue was underage when she first meets Magneto, she looks exactly the same in the flashback as she does in the present. This just comes across as projection at this point.

And with his youth restored with the super soldier serum. He would appear young and handsome to them.

I can appreciate the impact that all the positive elements of the episode had on you. You've done a great job expressing how great the great parts were. In the end magneto will turn into professor x and scott will turn into magneto ultimately leading to avengers vs x-men. Steve rogers is slated to show up in one of the episodes if not this season in the next 2 or 3. So we might get version of a versus x at least an animated form for now. The hellfire club might use madeline like they did jean to get to the phoenix. I just hope that they don't retcon it so that madeline was the phoenix all the while because right now they don't know which is which. I wouldn't mind them turning maddie evil again if it leads to dark web though. Which can inevitably lead to spider-man 98 or any version of the spider-man reboot. That is an unfinished story worth rebooting for sure.

I was done with this show after the 1st episode, but I checked out this one. Man... This was more X-Men than X-Men has been since the 90's. Killer episode.

Hopefully next season they'll get more episodes so plots can have a chance to breathe.
