I was so excited to order my dell XPS 13. When it arrived at my door step I jumped in happiness. Upon looking at my packing slip, my heart shattered -- I bought the 7th Generation processor one, not the 8th. I was so let down. I searched through my email and yes, indeed it was my fault to buy the wrong laptop. During that time dell's website was selling both XPS 13, 7th and 8th generation one for the same price and I had mistakenly bought the 7th Gen one. I called the sales rep hoping I could get an exchange and they said it wasn't possible. But, they said I could do a refund and they'll help me get the 8th Gen one by only paying for the refund tax -- basically almost like an exchange but it was refund and repurchase done for me by the sales rep. I was so happy they said they could do that for me. All this happened withing 1 hour of receiving my product and I'm typing this out in the next our. So far I'm enjoying their support but Ill have to wait for a month and a half to only be able to receive the 8th Gen one. Sucks but okay, its worth it for 8th Gen (right?)
Jimmy Tries World Intel and Qualcomm have a strong monopoly on the market they don't have to do anything. Qualcomm is dragging it's feet knowing that companies will buy their Soc's because of the CDMA modem rights.
Its the windows update that you are not seeing the high performance feature. I had the same problem. But you can still do it. Go into the power options and create a power plan and u will get the option to select high performance. Then it's all good. Like this so Dave can see this.
Tiring designs that aren't ugly, but have minimal/no discernible changes in design in iteration. I think that criticism is reserved for a special company we all know :)
Dave, If you do a review of ux331 zenbook or a comparison between the zenbook ux331, dell xps 13 razerblade stealth and the macbookpro 13 for editing videos I will probably cry tears of joy and I might buy you a pony or any other animal you might want.
Love your videos! Polished, clean, stylish, and smart looking! The sound tracks you use are easy on the ears. Everything just seems to mesh well with each other. Your production quality is highly professional and I am surprised you are not way past 1 million subscribers already. I've been a long time subscriber and absolutely appreciate the quality content you put out. I do miss those outline animation of compnents you used to do but I do understand that they are time consuming and do not add much value. Please keep up the good work!
Good on you for pointing out the 15 vs 45 watt TDP difference. I'm always surprised how rarely this is spoken of and how many people don't know about it, or the pros and cons of each.
If I'm not wrong Lisa from MobileTechReviews said don't judge those 8th gen CPUs by benchmarks cuz those apply short workloads so the 4 cores would be boosted to 4ghz which will make a huge difference in benchmarks but in real life they'll throttle after a while and because of their low base frequency their performance will be only slightly better than the 7th gen CPUs. What do you think Dave?
Aliticx if you watch her video, there was a substantial jump in performance over the 7th Gen 15W processor. The previous Gen quad-core 45W chips still held the advantage though. Her conclusion was that it is a great time to buy a laptop if you didn't already have a gaming laptop (i.e. 45W). I don't know if you can conclude that Intel has found the magic formula in doubling the cores and dropping the base clock speed but it looks promising.
+1 for your comment on Dell Laptops customer support. I've worked as a Technical Support rep for them before and I can attest to that. XPS laptops even have a dedicated support team separate from the other models
YEEEY 😁 FINALLY U UPLOAD hey dave can u review between Zenbook ux430un (mx150) vs vivobook pro please? price is same but has different specs.. IDK which is better
BushiGT The fan noise is pretty loud when you play demanding titles. At times while browsing, the fans will turn on, but after a while they stop. BTW the laptop get pretty hot when you keep it on for a long period of time. (Given you’re doing something that is more demanding than browsing.)
Dave’s intro sound so chill always reviewing the best laptops hopefully he does an update on the best MacBook to but with Christmas coming and some gaming laptops
lol well at that low of a tdp and from intel it's pretty great. i'm wondering if intel will finially pick it up and have 6 cores for the next gen of i5 H processors and 8 cores on i7 H's
Always a pleasure watching your outstanding reviews, not featuring an annoying & distracting background track. The music that you have chosen in this video is OK.
Still rocking my 2016 XPS 15 9550. Absolute beast. I intend to keep this for at least another 3 years. No point in investing so much money in a laptop only to change it a year later.
This was an excellent and classy review! I'm still fiercely loyal to my 9-month-old 2015 15" MacBook Pro, but I always keep my eyes and mind wide open for better/newer tech devices.
I've missed the intro music sooooooooooo much. Thanks for bringing it back. Please use the same intro Dave. It's awesome. Huge fan of your's. Keep rocking man. 🤘
Thats what I bought. I had a XPS 2 years ago, and when I was looking for a new laptop I noticed the XPS is pretty much the same thing. SO I bought the x360 with 1080p screen. It's so light, so thing, and fast, it's a beast!
Hey Dave, I've got a HP Spectre X360 (2016 model with 2 usb C ports) with an i5 Kaby Lake, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. If HP was to release a newer Spectre X360 with 8th gen Quad core processors, do you think it would be worth the upgrade? It did cost me an arm and a leg to buy the kaby lake one, and as a student that's not ideal, but the resale value of these is pretty high here in Australia. Personally I love the laptop, but would it be smart to get the newer ones if they come out? Thanks.
I use it quite a bit, not for really any specific touch based things, but scrolling and clicking big buttons, or swiping to go to multitasking, its useful but not really required
I'm still using my 9350 Core i5 and love the size and battery life. It handles 16 megapickle RAW photos in Adobe Lightroom quite nicely. Pro Tip: Get the WIndows Signature Edition from the Microsoft Store and get one without crapware!
Love your video. I think you should add the costumer support point for every review unit you do. Not a lot of people know how good or bad some laptop companies are and there are a lot of brands out there
For those who love the background the artist is Aenami, she does amazing art and I've used her backgrounds for months! Nice to see Dave using them too :)
I have the XPS 13 and I love it except: The keyboard is way too shallow and I constantly make typos. I'm coming from a mech keyboard so might just be me. It's also very, very mushy. The screen having small bezels means when you open it, fingerprints get all over the top of the screen. The trackpad is just bad. Constantly moves tabs into a new window when I'm just trying move from the tab menu to the content on the browser. But I haven't used a laptop trackpad full-time so this might just be a general trackpad issue. Accuracy is nice though, it's just moving around that's an issue. Needs one or two more USB-A ports. The plastic on the inside is very easy to scratch and mark up. The palm rests feel nice but the bezels around the bottom of the screen is where crap can really accumulate. The hinge gets a lot of crap stuck inside it. I have to clean mine out every week or so (it pretty much lives in my backpack so keep that in mind). That being said, I love its standby battery life, the screen brightness, how snappy it is, how solid it feels but also how light it is, how cool it runs with light usage (4 windows of browsers, with each browser having 5 tabs along with Telegram and Spotify running), and the battery indicator on the side, the light on the charger. With very light usage (maybe a couple hours of use every other day), I can get around a little over a week (8 days) out of the battery.
Hi, I'm kind of a newbie. Is something like this laptop sufficient for editing 4k videos? I need something portable for work than can edit 4k videos, simple stuff no fancy edits or graphics, maybe 5-10 minute videos. Thanks if anyone can help answer :)
The webcam on the xps isn't even that big of a problem, I've had mine for like a month or so now and it's kinda unique. And plus a lot of people don't find hp products very durable.
I too have noticed my power settings slowly disappearing and now there is only balanced in the control panel. But I managed to get them back by going creating a new power plan and there was a Dropbox where i could select power saving, balanced or high performance to base my power plan on. I ended up using the power saving preset to base my power plan on! Also nice vid on one of the few new next gen intel cpus!! as always!
I just went through 9 months back and forth with Dell over an XPS 9560. They finally took it back and refunded me a few days ago. During this entire ordeal I spoke to a fairly high-up Dell representative and he stated, off the record off course, that almost 1 in 5 of the Dell XPS line-up had issues that at the very least warrented a tech visit. Dave, I know you don't do investigative work like this but I would love to hear your experiences or take on this as there are so many with faulty machines on /r/Dell just as an example.
gynnox what kind of bullshit are you talking about? You know that if they are paid they are legally required to disclose the sponsorship, as dave does everytime when that is the case?
Eggsdayz I do understand what you're saying.. But have you watched Casey's videos? He reviews DJI drones, Samsung phones and boosted boards.. We all know it's sponsored in one way or another, yet he says it's not sponsored..
Hey Dave. I gotta say, you're making some of the best tech videos out there. Keep up the great work. However, in this vid I noticed that you're using the RED camera as well as some of the other youtubers such as Marques and I gotta say, the picture quality in this video for some reason just doesn't seem as sharp as in MKBHD's vids. Maybe it's the background colours, type of camera, editing, I wouldn't know. Just sharing my opinion.
David, I have an inspiron (partly by your recommendation) and that USB-C next to the barrel port will charge the laptop as well. I have two chargers, one barrel that came with my laptop and one extra one I purchased which was USB-C and charges my laptop just fine. It actually has a USB port on the power adapter so I can charge my phone off it as well!
Olav Samuelsen Telneset I'm wondering about this as well. I have the 2015 version and the coil whining is driving me nuts when I'm using it at the library.
I've got the XPS 13 8th gen for just a week now and it still has coil whine, but I can only hear it when i put my ear to the laptop in a silent room. When I use it in a quiet area it is not noticable.
Finally someone made a video on it! I left the XPS 13 and I honestly miss it. But 2 PCIe sucked for me. And only one USB C was a complaint. But with my Blade Stealth I'm getting around the same performance in games. Am I doing something wrong Dave?
Hey Dave, actually the Alpine White & Gold edition is a newly redesigned version of the XPS 13. It now features a Windows Hello Facial Recognition, woven glass fiber construction on the palm rest, slightly lighter & the bezels are much thinner compared to the previous version. Also, the USB 3.0 ports have been replaced with three USB-C ports, and the SD card reader has been exchanged for a microSD slot. You can watch the hands on video by HotHardware.
you don't need to have a "high performance" preset in order to get those settings. Just change them manually. You can make as many custom presets as you could possibly want, and High Performance doesn't actually max out all the settings anyway.
Might have been my luck but here is my experience with this XPS 13 line: gen 1 : coil whine gen 2 : coil whine gen 3 : coil whine gen 4 : coil whine WTF DELL!!!!
Wow. I'm curious did the coil whine start up immediately for you or did it take awhile to start? I'm wondering because I got the XPS 13 9360 3 days ago I can hear some coil whine when I put my ear down very close to the keyboard, but in a normal position, I hear nothing. It's completely silent even in a very quiet room. Is it luck or is it supposed to get really bad eventually?
not even a 1050? for the price this things can get to? Hell no. It's basically a no show without a dedicated GPU for 3d modelling or editing videos or images with programs that take advantage of GPU acceleration, and i won't even talk about gaming, the XPS 13 and the Razer Stealth both suffer from this stupid issue, they want to charge us half a kidney for this underpowered laptops without a Graphics processor.
Hey Dave great video! I'd love to see a review of the new Dell Inspiron 7000 series, they offer the new Intel CPU's and very similar specs to the XPS line up but are much more affordable! Keep it up!
I'm currently binging on your videos and I'm loving the content! I have a question that I hope, you can answer: Would this be good to start editing videos and using Photoshop and such? Thanks!
Another great vid :D I've been looking at upgrading my pc, now with 10th gen nvidia cards out I was wandering if you had a favourite laptop for around the £1000 mark. A video for 'budget' gaming laptops would be amazing Thanks!
XPS is a great line, however I am excited for when the surface pro goes quad core (and usb c). That is what I am waiting for. Great review Dave as always.
Thanks David, the new Dell is very tempting!!! About Customer support, Dell just Win my heart. Went to Thailand couple years ago, my laptop screen got a big problem, called Dell Thailand, e-mail them the pictures of the screen. Next day (yes, Next day) they sent a Technical guy to come to Replace (yes, brand new) the screen at the coffee shop near my hotel. It took only 15 minutes and Free!!! ... This is more than just above average :-)
Great review, great video quality which is no surprise seeing what looks like VERYYY expensive camera equipment you use. Thanks B.T.W - Did you go on holiday recently? You shaved skin (goatee area) looked slightly lighter than the rest of your face lol
