This video goes over how to do the pin stitch - which is an easy & secure way to start and end threads for cross stitch. I go over both the vertical pin stitch and the diagonal pin stitch (my preferred way). Let me know if you try it out!

Thank you for sharing this well demonstrated technique! 60 year young gal here who has always wanted to cross stitch. Am an avid knitter for 40 + years. Am just now working on my first cross stitch piece and catching up on cross stitchers from the Atlantic Provinces. Found you first before Darcy…(but we won’t tell him..lol) I live in northern New Brunswick. Your work is wonderful and it is such a joy to see that you also like to knit. I’m still searching for Canadian suppliers of cross stitch cloth and supplies, as where I live, it is limited. I did though, find a source of Anchor floss just around the corner. Anyway, your content is very pleasing and I really appreciate your time involved in sharing your passions. Thank you

So for finishing on the diagonal, you stitch the top stitch FIRST & then do the pin stitch for the bottom left second! It’s just the reverse so that the pin stitch is covered!

Thank you for making this wonderful video! You did an excellent job of explaining both methods. The diagonal pin stitch is brilliant! I tried it today and made one change. Instead of having the tail in the back and flipping back and forth I started from the front in the upper left corner of the stitch I was starting on. Pulled so I had a short tail, completed the diagonal pin stitch, snipped any remaining tail and completed the final stitch so my needle ended in the upper left which pushed down any remaining tail. It’s a game changer for me. I just have to master the method when finishing. I need more practice with that for sure. I appreciate your thoughtful tutorial.

When I use a pin stitch to finish my thread, I don’t pull the second leg of my X all the way through. I bring up my needle for the pin stitch, put it in the middle hole. Then I pull the second leg through. It’s much easier to find the middle hole this way. Love the diagonal pin stitch. Thank you!

Excellent tutoria. Agree with you on diagonal stitch and want to practice today Good to know the horizontal stitch and for that matter vertical as well. As far as diagonal stitch: I guess you leave the little loop in the back to ensure that when you come back you can split the thread to secure the stitch? When you end the tread: Do you do the same then by leaving a little loop?. Thanks much! Esias

Thank you Shiloh! This might work out better than previous attempts I have tried on certain projects. My main issue is when I am stitching on a stand on how to start odd numbers of thread, 1 or 3, without a mess of waste threads and ending the threads. I don't really like the look of running the threads through the stitches on the front of my work. Any helpful suggestions? I will definitely try this when I get a chance.

Thank you for your video! Could you clarify what it means to split your stitches?
@Xstitchmd
@Xstitchmd 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! “splitting your stitches” means that when you go down into the hole, you go directly through the floss already there (instead of around it). This gives a bit of extra security because it has the floss already there to “grab onto”. Let me know if that makes sense?
@tozerov
@tozerov 3 года назад
@@Xstitchmd Yes, for stitching with 2 strands, that makes sense, thank you! Do you know if splitting the stitches would still apply for a pin stitch with 1 strand, e.g. working with silk on a higher count linen? That is still not entirely clear to me. Thanks again!

@bakyunny
@bakyunny 2 года назад
Question: when ending in this method, wouldn’t the thread come undone pretty easily? Or is it that since it’s underneath the top thread, that’s enough to be held down by that thread?
@Xstitchmd
@Xstitchmd 2 года назад
If you are starting a thread with a pin stitch, sometimes the first leg can come loose. To avoid that, I make sure that when I go down for the second leg, I pierce through the thread to anchor it. For ending a thread with a pin stitch, the stitch that is already there anchors it down & it does not come out!! Which makes it tough if you’re trying to pick it out if you make a mistake haha - basically you just have to cut it! Hope that helps!!

@@Xstitchmd I did try the diagonal way on my aida, but pulled it back out because my two halves on the bottom weren’t connecting neatly to form a straight diagonal line. I was worried the top leg wouldn’t be enough to make it look like a neat X. I’ll practice it a bit more when I’m not stitching. I’d love to see you do a short tutorial on how to stitch on evenweave.
