Demonstrating some of the CW features that differ from the Icom 706. I forgot to include the CW pitch adjustment. It It differs from the 706 in that it's not a linear adjustment. The options are 400, 500, 600, 700 or 800 hz. I like it about 500 and that's where it's set in the video.
This radio will transmit a very loud rushing air sound when you key the mic in SSB. I was getting reports that my snap on choke helped and engaging the DSP filters seemed to take most of it out. I used a monitor radio the other day and it's still pretty bad. I'm going to call Yaesu about it because it's REALLY BAD! I also put a RF choke on the HF feedline into the back of the radio and that didn't help at all.
PS, I was wrong about the CW Auto feature. That controls whether the the key jack is enabled or disabled in SSB or FM modes.

I have mine set to S meter priority so when you transmit it switches from the S meter to show the SWR's. It's a small display but all the important stuff is crammed in there. Much bigger display and meter readouts on the 706.

Works great on all bands and more radio than you need for repeater QSO.

@rs4425 From the "J" quick menu, you will see, spot / bk / kyr. The bk can be toggled on and off by pushing the button below the bk icon. I don't have the manual handy but the CW operation should be explained pretty well in there. Good luck OM.

Great demo video! In the process of getting one myslef. What meter (make and model) is beside the Yaeshu? I love the look of it!
@stoker20

@cousincozen It's a Daiwa CN465M, VHF UHF.

@KC0TLV The guy I bought the rig from was a Ham and he modified it to TX everywhere. I'm thinking the rushing air noise on SSB TX is because he screwed something up. If I kick in all the DSP 80% of the problem is solved but the RX is unpleasant to listen to with all the digital filtering.
@tbdoor923
@tbdoor923 11 лет назад
The meter reads from bottom to top. Bottom is low top is high. RX is always S meter, TX you select either PWR, SWR, ALC or MOD from menu settings.

@TheDan4279 you can name any memory channel then toggle back and forth to see the frequency or name tag? IIRC. I've barely touched this rig in the last couple years. :(

ok how do you read it and how do you do the s meter priority it doesn't have a value on the swr like 1:1 i think i has just bars how do you tell if its good

I mostly operate CW so only 20w on UHF is no concern to me.

would this be a good CW rig for beginners? I am looking for a good cw rig I can use mobile and portable from base to vehicle and wanted suggestions. My other question is I want something I can use a straight key with and wonder if you can do that with this

People choke off the mic, because they've seen someone else do it, or their shack has a bad rf ground. The ferrite core is not the fix.
@stoker20

The guy I got the radio from did the transmit everywhere mod and it messed up the SSB modulation. I mainly operate CW so this isn't a big problem for me. If you want CB you would be wasting your money getting this rig unless your goal is to impress your friends with the name and model of radio you're using. Also with the menu based control, for some Good Buddies it's too complicated to figure out how to operate the radio!!!!

Seems everyone has one of these radios . Been using one these for about 3 or 4 years.

The reason you don't hear relay clatter is because you aren't transmitting. I suspect you have VOX turned off. Full break-in cw uses a rather loud relay making lots of noise just like the 706 plus it chops the dits in a similar fashion. The receiver is much better than the 706 however.
@stoker20
@stoker20 10 лет назад
DROM. While sending, the Yaesu is silent compared to the 3, 706's I've had QSK.
@n4lq
@n4lq 10 лет назад
stoker20 Quieter yes but I still say you weren't transmitting. Of course with BK-in turned off there's no relay at all.

@@n4lq mine is a tad quiter than my old 706. I do enjoy CW on this rig.

Get an optional 300Hz CW Collins filter and you won't believe the difference it makes in reception, especially on a busy band or during contests.

Yes that would be nice! I've had tight filters on some of my other radios. Using 756 pro3 when I'm on the air now.

How do i use the 857 as a cw trainer ? ..there is a way to use a straight key to practice and NOT have it transmit and you can hear the sidetone ...how do I do this ??.....manual says the B/BK light must be off and you have to use a 3 prong stereo plug ...the dit dah and ground ...but straight key has two terminals ..so what do I do with the third wire from the stereo plug ?..any one has a wiring diagram ? thanks
@stoker20
@stoker20 2 года назад
Please refer to the Yaesu 857d manual page 17 CW Connections. They show you the connections for the plug. CW Transmission is covered on page 52 with #6 CW Practice and #7 CW Sidetone volume level. Happy Brass Pounding 73.

@@stoker20 thanks for your swift response ..thanks for helping out a fellow HAM .....however what i want to see is how to connect a three lead plug to a straight key ; that only has two terminals....the diagram in the manual shows a three lead to a paddle ....I want the diagram for a three lead plug with three wires to a straight key ??.....thanks again
@stoker20
@stoker20 2 года назад
@@antonjames8405 The tip of the plug goes to the key contact and the ground is to the part of the 3 contact plug farthest away from the tip. Use a meter to confirm continuity of the wires to the part of the plug you're trying to hook up.

@@stoker20 and what happens to the third lead .???....ie : the one that is in the middle of the stereo plug ?...there is a tip..aka the dit ...a middle..aka the dah .. and a shaft . aka the ground ........so there are three wires out of the plug ....so where do you put the three wires ??... the tip goes to one terminal on the straight key ....the ground goes to the other terminal on the straight key ....so what happens to the middle lead ??......thanks for your patience
@stoker20

@@antonjames8405 Nothing happens with the middle. One of my keys had a 1/4" plug so I used a 1/4" to 3.5 or whatever size it is adapter and it worked fine or get the male plug for 2 wires and solder on your leads.

have you ever tried the beacon mode on it? I can't seem to get mine to work! Not sure what i am doing wrong. I've followed instructions to the T several times
@stoker20
@stoker20 7 лет назад
Yes, I've used the beacon mode. Program your CW message how you want it and enable the break in. I didn't have any trouble. Just followed the directions???? Do you have the break in turned off????? It plays the message but doesn't transmit??? Maybe you have some option turned off in the menu???
@HugDeeznueces
@HugDeeznueces 7 лет назад
sorry not sure what you mean by break in. kindly ask you explain. what other menu options do I have to check?
@stoker20
@stoker20 7 лет назад
You can't program the message? It will play the message but not transmit? I need to know what the problem is. I looked at the manual and the break in is automatic so that's not the problem????? The break in is a control for CW transmitting. You do understand the Beacon is CW mode?
@HugDeeznueces
@HugDeeznueces 7 лет назад
thanks for your reply mate. I am able to program the msg. when that is complete, i have my frequency selected and the mode on CW. when i press the key (tab labeled A) the beacon menu shows up on lcd but radio does not transmit. what am I doing wrong?
@stoker20
@stoker20 7 лет назад
Without being in your shack, I can only encourage you to refer to your manual. It might have taken me a few times to get it right. How about the CW message keyer? Can you make that work? I think the only difference is that the Beacon feature is a timed interval for the A button.
