Get a Yamaha Outboard Repair Manual on eBay: geni.us/repair-manual
Today I'm removing the carburetor from my Yamaha F2.5 AMH 2012 Outboard motor. I bought this cheaply as a non-runner. It was used as a reserve for a sail boat in France and only ran a few times from new. It was then sat up for over three years and since hasn't run. I guessed it needed a simple carb clean and it would be fine. If petrol is allowed to sit in the carburetor for years the petrol breaks down and leaves a varnish-like residue all the way through the carb and will often block the very small jets and passages through the carb and so starving the motor of fuel and not running. I used an ultrasonic bath with acetone to clean all the hard to reach areas of the Yamaha F2.5 carb. So with this in mind in this video, I will show you the process of removing the carb, cleaning, and re-fitting and finally a test run.
If you found this video useful I would appreciate a thumbs up and please consider subscribing for more videos.
If there is something you would like to see me do with this or other Outboard motors please let me know in the comments below.
If you need a repair manual for your Yamaha Outboard you can grab one on eBay here: geni.us/repair-manual

Well done! It got my Yamaha 2.5 running like it should again. I could not have done this without your guidance and good tips! Just one tip that I’d like to add: when I put re-assembled it, the throttle cable (lying in the bottom half of the cowling) ended up on the outside of the fuel valve stem. It should go on the inside. I managed to fish it around to the inside but it would be easier to make sure it’s there before mounting the carb. Thank You for taking the time to share this!

Thank you so much for this video as it helped me start my identical model with just taking it apart and unblocking that brass piece in the carburettor . Brilliant

Hi, good first phase cleaning, second phase would include removing the main jet (big brass) and idling ( behind black plastic plug), in my case half the holes were blocked on the main and the idle jet almost fully.

Very well presented 👍. I used to do this maintenance every year however 3 years ago I just swapped to Shell V power petrol and found fouling is much reduced….

Just a detail, the screws are not Phillips, they are JIS ( Japanese) so it works a bit better if you use a JIS screwdriver.

Thanks for making the video, but sure could have used a description/demonstration of your cleaning method!

A good sqirt with some carb cleaner and a clean cloth is all that's required often, if it's really gunked up an ultrasonic clean will really get into everything.

Whats the stock adjustment setting for an f4 carb?

Hi there, I just bought a 2021 used Yamaha 2.5 very little hours. Started it for first time today in a closed loop circuit (my bucket). Was very eager to run it and the only water I could get was from a hot water hose as the cold water supply was closed for the winter. I went through different rpms and ran it max rpms in neutral for probably 2-3 mins, water in bucket was very hot. Engine shut off and made a quick cranking sound. Couldn't get it to start again. Checked compression by putting my finger by the spark plug hole and didn't feel any compression. Put an inline spark plug tester and the tester blinks when I pull the coil. Could the hot water have damaged the outboard? Any next steps to diagnose what needs fixing? Thanks!

That was great. I have fuel coming out of my carb somewhere underneath the carb. Only when I turn the tap on. Any ideas as to why? I had emptied the fuel that had been sitting in it for over a year by tipping the motor upside down 🥴 so I know I stuffed up doing that now. But I can’t seem to stop the leak and the engine won’t start,

This is caused by a poorly designed drain screw that deforms easily. Buy a new screw, seat it and never open it.

Thank you so much brother, I just have a question when you open the carb , did you have to take the small parts out or you just spray them and than put it back.
@QXReviews
@QXReviews 4 года назад
I world remove the jets and spray them too, they can easily get blocked so worth checking that you can see light through the jet which means it's clear.

Thanks for posting this video. I have the same outboard and it also won't start. Is there only a main jet in the carburetor or is there also a pilot jet? (sometimes referred to as the idle or slow jet)
@stephenauty2402
@stephenauty2402 3 года назад
There is a pilot jet next to the main jet, it has a rubber plug over it and draws it's fuel from the Main somehow. Pull the plug carefully unscrew the pilot and check it's not blocked.

Quick question, mine runs fine without the engine cowling. As soon as I put the cover on it dies. Any thoughts?

When screwing the brass piece back in should you fully tighten? Thanks!

I'm replacing the rubber seal for the float chamber. It is easy to clamp it down and for it not to be perfectly in situ. The groove has pinch points for it, but I'm finding it hard to pinch it in place. Any tips?
@AndyoLawrence
@AndyoLawrence Год назад
If it’s a genuine seal it should fit easily, you can always try a very thin layer of silicone on the seal which will help it stay in place while you screw it down.

The brass screw near the drain tube was so tight that I couldn't get mine off when cleaning the carb. Do you know if this screw is not meant to be undone? Does it matter if it cannot clean it out?
@QXReviews
@QXReviews 4 года назад
I think thats just the screw to manually drain the float bowl so not really important.
@fallguy100000
@fallguy100000 Год назад
Actually, that screw is troublesome. After removal, it tends to seat poorly and require replacement. Best to avoid it.
@ConnLavelle
@ConnLavelle 3 месяца назад
I agree, the screw is poor, however it does allow any water in the bottom of the bowl to drain. After I damaged the head I left it in situ and while I ran the carb dry at the end of each season the build up of corrosion (I suspect from trapped water) caused me grief. The screw is a number 2 Phillips I think.

u probably forgot to mention that the spacer got a right way to fit because the opening is angled

I would say so, I haven't used mine much but it's been fine.

Mine is almost 20 years old. Yes, very reliable. Just keep it running about every month. To clean carbs those little jets clog easily, and I have done this video several times for letting it sit. Don't let it sit more than a month to keep carbs flowing.
@fallguy100000
@fallguy100000 Год назад
Not if you winter. The carb does not stay unclogged well. I have this motor in MN and the carb is clogged every spring. I tried to drain it one year and not only did it still dry up varnish in the jet, but the drain screw also failed and was costly.
@fallguy100000

After I repaired the leaky screw, I had to do another teardown and cleaning. The motor is not great for infrequent use.

Shame, I came here hoping to find out why my fuel tap is pissing out petrol. I’ve got TWO of these carbs and they’re both doing the same thing even after replacing the sealing washer on one! Have stripped both carbs and no sticking needle valves either - although that still wouldn’t account for petrol coming out of the fuel tap. Seems like the previous owner had the same problem and just replaced the entire carb and now that too is leaking! Shitty design.
@fallguy100000
@fallguy100000 Год назад
You need to buy a new drain screw, the washer is not enough.
