Yamaha SRX600 : Big end failure, or something else ? Part 2 : Engine inspection

Trying to find the source of a pretty loud knocking sound on my red 1986 Yamaha SRX600. First thoughts were a Big End failure, however things are not always as they seem. I took off the clutch cover for inspection and found a few 'issues'. If this is it, it won't be too expensive to fix.

Thank you very much for your videos on the SRX600. I learned new things about my SRX600 which I love riding through the Northern California hills. I'm envious of your skills and knowledge and very grateful for your lessons. Thank you very much for sharing!!!

Thanks for your kind words, Bernard. The SRX is indeed a great bike to ride. I've solved the knock problem meanwhile and have put it all together again. Will post an update movie in 1 or 2 weeks time from now. If you are on facebook, feel free to join our SRX600 group btw. Lots of expertise there : facebook/SRX600

Nico, I don't know if you're watching the comments on your videos. Have another question for you. I replaced my check valve and put the bike back together last fall. I had a small oil leak coming from the clutch cover gasket. A couple weeks ago I bought a new gasket and took the clutch cover back off. I could not find the source of the leak. I put the new gasket on and put the cover back on and found that the decompression cable was too tight to connect to the lever for the valves.. l wondered if you know what could cause this. I had trouble getting the kickstarter nut off. Had to use an impact wrench. Could that have altered the length of the decompression cable? Have I created some catastrophic damage? Right now I am recovering from surgery so I can't look at it. So I hoped by the time I recovered, you'd answer. Thank you.

Nico, Thanks. Is it possible to get the oil pump out without removing the clutch? (I don't have the tool you used to hold the clutch.)

Hi Nico is there any point in any if your videos where it shows the location of the oil light switch?

There is no oil light switch on a SRX. It has neutral, high beam and indicator. The Japanese models have an addtional light that turns on when you're riding above a certain speed.
