Yamaha WR250R Off Road Test Ride and Review: Gravel Roads and Muddy Singletrack

My buddy was kind enough to lend me his Yamaha WR250R to take out and test in the woods on some gravel roads, OHV trails, and singletrack. They may have discontinued the Yamaha WR250R, but it's still a top-tier choice for those looking for a bulletproof reliable dual sport motorcycle that's very capable on gravel, mud, and other surfaces. I got to do a ton of WR250R trail riding and exploring the forest on gravel roads and really got a good sense of the Yamaha WR250R off road performance. This off road test ride and Yamaha WR250R review covers all my thoughts on on and off road performance, highway riding, whether or not it's a good beginner bike, and some of the coolest WR250R mods you can make to make this dual sport bike even more capable and faster both on and off the road. I had a fantastic time making this WR250R test ride and review for you. I hope you enjoy it!

I have had my WR for a few years now, great little bike when done up as a ADV bike, seat concepts seat, Safari tank, rear and side racks and 14/49 sprockets, to slightly lower the gearing and make 6th more usable on the highway. Just need to remember that the engine loves to rev up high.

I have owned about 10 Japanese dual sports over the last 25 years. The wr250r has been the best. I give it the edge over the drz400s, which I owned 2 of, mainly for being lighter, fuel injected and having firmer suspension. The only bike that beats the wr250r is my current bike, a 2017 KTM 500excf which I bought new 5 years ago and it has been as bulletproof as any Japanese bike I've had.

Rev that bike up! Slip the clutch climbing hills to stop bogging the engine. It wasn’t that the bike can’t climb hills, it’s that you kept it at such a low RPM. That bike easily climbs even without engine mods and sprockets, but you gotta be willing to ring it out a little. Love your videos, so this critique is simply in defense of the majestic and wonderful WR250R 🏍️ Great vid!

Nice review DITR. I wish people would stop calling small bore duel sports, "beginners bikes." How many people have spent loads of money on a heavy adventure bike thinking they can take them off road. Only to fined they can't pick them up or they are just a hand full because of their weight. Then go out and buy a " beginners bike." I call the light weight, small bore duel sport/adventure bikes a "Smart Person's" bike. Trust me, people have a lot more fun on smaller light weight machines.

Fantastic review! At the end of the day that WR was doing exactly what it was meant to - leave you smiling and giggling the whole way on the trail. Definitely agree with it being “confidence inspiring”. Once you get into that 260-280lbs range for DS bikes you feel pretty invincible on it!

As a fellow big guy, PUT HEAVIER SPRINGS ON YOUR DRZ! It isn't that much money, it isn't that hard to do, and it will pay dividends. Really improved my '03. Like night and day. That plus good tires and you may find some of that flick-ability in the slop. Everything gets better in life when you get the right spring rates. Everything

Love the WR250! I have two 2008s and have put 10k+ miles on one of them. Ridden several BDRs (WA, ID, all the ORs, and 2,300 mile Western TAT ride) over 10+ yrs. I would highly recommend the Yamalink, lowering link, for anyone worried about seat height. I mounted a 2gal rotopax off the left side to increase range, but gets great fuel mileage regardless. Have lots more WR footage on my channel. (shameless plug) 🙂

I have a 2007 WR250F I recently got which is supposed to be different than theWR250R. The 250 F is still in production. As with my WR450F I used to have, I installed a Yamalink lowering link that lowers the seat height 1 1/2 to 2 inches. The install is easy. It made a huge difference in touching the ground and I am 6 feet tall. The WR250F is even lighter than this WR250R, about 240 pounds.

I've had a wr250x for over a decade, since new. Stock, this bike was far from perfect but a good place to start. Light wight, with loads of easy ways to lighten it. Lowering is also easy, plenty of lower seats and 'Yamalinks' easy to fit. Mine has lost weight, lost height, gained power, got a bigger tank and a smaller sprocket. Not to mention new bars, a comfey seat and super sticky road tyres. It's reletively low power, 32hp(ish) but with a high power to weight ratio, sticky tyres and loads of suspension, it's a very nippy town bike. Great fun on the tight turns, pot holes and speed bumps found in my part of London. Almost perfect for me but took a lot of work. And then there's the fuel pump and fork oil issues!😂

My 2019 WR has the IMS 12 litre tank which allows for 300km+ of riding. I put a MOX cush-drive rear sprocket on with 45 teeth so it will now hold 100km/h into a headwind. Awesome bike, great engine. I wound the compression out to 3 clicks in on the fork, this allowed the front end to dive more under braking and deflect less. Also I'm 6'2" so the bike is a great fit, both feet flat on the floor. The electrics have no problem powering Oxford heated grips and an Oxford heated vest, both nice to have here in winter close to Antarctica.

You can strip these bikes down to weigh very little relatively, mine weighs 270-275 depending on fuel load and it still has lights. Combine it with a big sprocket, a good exhaust (Beams-R makes the power even more ridable) and a suspension revalve. This makes the bike a weapon that needs almost no maintenance.

@quikboarder93
@quikboarder93 2 года назад
The R is better in terms of power vs comparable dual sports. It’s anemic compared to true enduro bikes, which is not really a fair comparison. You can run a full synthetic oil like VP off-road 10W-40 and go over 5,000 miles without an oil change as long too much dirt doesn’t get in. The F or a Husky/KTM would need an oil change like 3 times for a cross country trip and another 3 plus a valve check on the way back.

I pick up a 2008 wr250r tomorrow. I currently own a 2022 klr 650, and i love that bike in every aspect EXCEPT single track. Im trading my 08 ktm 300xc for it. I do love the ktm, but its just too much for an intermediate offroad rider like myself

Any idea what size tooth sprocket he's got on the front and rear? I think stock it a 13 on the front and 42 rear. Thinking about going up on mine so I can wheelie over logs and stuff eventually

try a 14/49 as it appears to be a better gear ratio, the 6th gear is more usable on the highway, and having a 14 front sprocket stops the chain wear on the swingarm.

I use 14/49 and it’s great. Torquier than the new 300 models while still having a higher top end as well

It will hold 60-65mph surprisingly well, but like all small dual sports you will get blown around a lot and not have much power left up there. I will take my WR on 55mph speed limit highways without much hesitancy but would never even consider taking it on 70mph speed limit highway where everyone’s going like 80mph

Damn, u broke his rear blinker!? LOL. I love WRR's, but I took a chance on a cheap Kayo K6 250 EFI for $4999 instead of modding a WRR for trail. Same power and maintenance as WR, but with a lot more torque and 25lbs lighter. Better suspension, and set up for offroad new.

@@josephfelice601 Iv rode both, the WR isnt comparible offroad. Less torque, heavier, worse suspension. The NC250 engine is the most mass produced small motorcycle engine in the world, super reliable and great power. Iv had a lot more bikes than most people, I might know my stuff here homie :]

@@tieoneon1614 Yeah the weight is definitely a consideration, but no way that nc250 is going to last as long as a wr250r. I rather pay more than support China, and pave their way to overtaking this country. Yes I know the Yamaha is Japanese, but we are ready to sink here and we don't need any help.
