Please do more plant shop tours, yours are the best tours I've seen on youtube because it does not have too much of distracting music and cuts in video so it is more consistent and pleasing to watch.

I love the look of these, and I have been learning about semi-hydro and leca/pon, so I am wondering now, are you planning on doing a follow up video on this method of growing? Up keeping? Fertilizing? I realize this is not exactly like semi-hydro since the whole of the roots are submerged so it is more like growing a vutting in water I guess… I really want to know how it turns out!

Question: What exactly keeps the roots from rotting?
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
The fact it’s just water and the soil has been removed. Roots can adapt to live in water.

@Gkrissy Год назад
Not really because you can get away with changing the water like once every 2 weeks or once a month. I have a sansevera aka snake plant in water and it’s less maintenance than my snake plant in soil in my office.

@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
It’s not really. Just pour water in to replace the existing water
@jackiewhitney5031
@jackiewhitney5031 Год назад
I feel it's easier in water since if you are watering soil you have to make sure the water is draining through the pot and then drain out the leftover water in the bottom saucer.

I'll give this a try with my monstera adansonii! So far they're just cuttings that have been rooting in a vase of water, shouldn't be too much trouble to add some decorative stones. I imagine using leca or lavastone would help keep the water clean for the roots as well. Adding a drop of honey could also be very helpful for keeping bacteria away.
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
That would be nice. Just change the water every couple of weeks to keep it fresh.

I have a dracaena and spider Plant in water and it's ok. Would recommend if like more clear glass look, to use darker stones like this, but if ok with smoky or colored glass, less need for stones. Reason is because algae builds really fast- esp. for hight light plants- in clear vases.

Questions galore... So, I've done this with cuttings from my prolific syngonium, but never any other plants. I've only done it for the looks, with the idea that it's not a good permanent home - for lack of nutrients. How long can a full plant (like you have here) be healthy "and grow well"? (assuming the water gets changed at regular intervals) Should they eventually be returned to soil? ...and if so, after how long? Do you add any food or nutrients to the water?

@garyntownsend9547
@garyntownsend9547 Год назад
I am sceptical about this. I don't think it'd work for most plants. Surely the roots will begin to rot without oxygen around them? How do you provide enough nutrients and maintain microbes around the roots?
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
There’s oxygen in water so the roots can live in water. Apply some liquid feed once in a while and you’re good to go

Does this also work with alocasias? I can never keep my alocasias happy with watering. I have used soil and a moisture meter, I have used aroid mix, ... I don't know. They are constantly weeping or hanging and I never have more than three leaves. It's frustrating. So I thought I'd try something different. Since alocasias do have a bulb to save water, I'm not sure if they can be cultivated in water or if it's better to use a semi-hydro culture. Did you try this with alocasias?

sadly it does, whatever substrate you may use. Even pure water in a glass will build up moss so you have to clean it regularly if you want to keep it looking nice and clean. If you dont mind the look of moss, you can leave it it for a longer time, as it is not harmful to the plant :)
