This Video is about Yogic breathing or Diaphragmatic breathing, how to effectively practice it and understand its significance in the quality of breath. Deep diaphragmatic breathing improves oxygenated blood in your system and energize the entire body.
About 'the Yogic lens'
The main purpose of this channel is to explain concepts and principles of yogic practices as per the tradition. This will mainly interest yogic enthusiasts, yoga teachers and anyone who is interested in understanding the science of yoga.
About the Speaker
Geetha M Kanthasamy is a certified Yoga teacher trained in the tradition of Shri Krishnamacharya. She has done 500+ hours of teacher training in Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai, 100 hour Advanced teacher training program in Vinyasa Krama Yoga from Shri Srivatsa Ramaswami, direct disciple of Shri Krishnamacharya and 500 hours Yoga Therapy from International Yoga Academy at Asana Andiappan College of Yoga. Geetha is a Level 2 QCI Yoga Teacher certified by the Ministry of Ayush, India . She is a registered Yoga Teacher RYT-500 certified by Yoga Alliance.
She enjoys imparting yogic knowledge to people, making them understand the significance of yoga and how it influences the mind, body and soul.

Dear Ms Kanthasamy, Thank you for your excellent videos. I discovered them a few days ago and was so amazed by your video of the Five Pranas, that I listened to it twice. Can you recommend an in-person, residential program for further study of Pranayama. Is there a school, or institution's website with information on the direct study of Pranayama? Mam, your explanation is very clarified. I do only pranayam, like 1. Observation of breath. 2. Full yogic breathing. 3. Chandrabedi Anulom Vilom. 4. Nadi shodhan or Anulom Vilom. 5. Brahmari and om Mantra. I,ve anxiety and panic attacks. Is this okay Mam, I do regularly. Diaphragm breathing 5 minutes. Pls suggest me. I liked the way you explain, it's really Great. The set of breathing practices you do is correct. You can just add Ujjayi exhalations. You can learn Viloma Ujjayi Pranayama and practice along with the set you mentioned. Try Yoga nidra as well...I have a separate video on yoga nidra. Try it out with earphones after coming from a walk or after Asana practice

I am practicing Yoga for quite some years. Watching your excellent videos recently, I again became anxious in doing more practice; look for more perfection and questioning what I have been doing up to now. I am grateful for these encouraging impulses. But I have one question: For Pranayama, it is the usual habit to breath in - hold - breath out - breath in again a.s.o. When counting some 12 breath per minute and I get into a deeper relaxed state, slowly the rhythm tends to change into: breath in- breathe out - hold - breath in again a.s.o., Watching animals, this is their way to breathe when they are totally relaxed (or asleep). For me it is much easier this way to lengthen my breaths and to go deeper and deeper down below 10 per min. Is it a totally wrong approach or can I go on like this? Thank you very much in advance for your advice, and I hope to see such interesting and helpful videos from you in future.

Mam, it's great. I should do a course. I did shambavi mudra. Regularly I do pranayam like Nadi vibhajan, brahmari, yogic breathing. Mam, I,ve anxiety and phobia, panic, I,m a cab Driverx own vehicle. I regularly get up and do all pranayam. Pls let me know the pranayam and which yoga should be done. I see RU-vid and I,ve taken Ishakriya and shambavi mudra. Pls Guide me. I,m taking pills. Please advise for people already in distress due to various stages of Asthma My understanding from hatayega was that abdominal breathing is what you describe as diaphragmatic breathing And what you describe as thoracic breathing is diaphragmatic breathing Please clarify the terminology according to Hatayoga pradeepika Also demonstrate faulty breathing you have observed - knowing what is wrong you are doing and be conscious of the negative aspect

While inhaling as first step do our chest needs to expand and then belly? or belly is enough? 2. while exhaling as first step do we expel from chest and then belly? can you please help with the steps of proper breathing.

Hi....Good question. When you inhale, chest expands then abdomen gently bulges out, While exhaling, abdomen recedes, then chest relaxes.

Good, ofcourse you shared very valuable information as far as concerned me. Thanks a lot. But madam, still I am not so clear that the difference between oxygen (O2) and subtle energy. The oxygen(simply a gas) giving to a patient through ventilator in hospitals , patient living,how?

Thank you for teaching yogic breathing. You did a wonderful job. I have a question for you. The question is, at different times we breath through one nostril only either left or right. Is it O.K. to breathe through one nostril or we open up the nostrils by doing OM BLOM and breathe through both. You are the expert so please help me understand this phenomenon because in nature we breathe through one nostril.

It is very usual to have one nostril dominant than the other. That is indicative of your mind temperament at that point. Doing Nadi shodhana (Alternative nostril breathing) will balance that.

Thank you ma'am. So we breathe from nose, expand chest and automatically the belly is pushed out or do we need to force the belly out to deepen the inhalation? Or do we just focus on belly movement and the chest will expand and contract automatically? Please help me with clearing my confusion. Because of asthma my breathing is very erratic

Can you please make a video on reverse breathing or bone breathing? Is there anything like that ? Such breathing I am given to understand is much used in martial arts such as from Ancient Kerala-Kalaripayattu

As you say, reverse breathing is practiced in martial arts. As part of yogic practices, this technique is not practiced and I haven't heard from any of my Gurus. If you need to learn, please learn directly from a proper teacher.
