Oddly enough, the older / grainier actor centric footage gave this a very 1980's TV feel. Like an episode I had missed as a kid.

This was a labor of love for TOS, and I'm stoked to finally have it released thanks to the restoration and post crew led by John Atkin, and a new group of talented trekkies not unlike Stan and I were when we started this endeavor...what seems like a million years ago. A tremendous thanks to everyone involved then and now. And to those that still appreciate good old fashioned Star Trek. Your contributions and interest over the years are what drove the ship. -Da

@StarshipYorktown

Yorktown began production in 1985. Sulu and Nogura's scenes were filmed in the mid-80s. For various reasons, the film was unfinished and in limbo for over 20 years, until work started up again in 2011. The new Yorktown bridge scenes on the ship, the Klingon scenes, and a few other pick-up shots were filmed between 2012 and 2016. VFX work was completed in 2021, and the final edit was finished in 2022.

Perfect cast choice for Nogura. Sulu as 1st Officer on point and fits into established canon easily- after the events of STTMP circa 2270-72, Sulu was offered the position sometime during the (widely assumed) TMP 5 year mission circa 2270-2275. This "episode" easily fits that time frame, probably around 2272-73, maybe as late as 2277-78

And we had some awesome creatives like Kathy Pilsbury creating the tunics and Andy adding his stamp of approval in the way of production design integration. Little did we know Andy would of course start on TNG shortly thereafter.

The anesthetic of the ship refit is superior to the original 1965 model. The nacelles more centered in a surround of the center of mass, the lighting on the deflector dish. Very artistic. Since the production is still maintaining the ship mission patches as uniform badges unique to each ship, the insignia on the port and starboard should likely have the Yorktown shape instead of the Enterprise badge....however TOS every ship had enterprise's badge since they were either reuse of Enterprise footage or made from the AMT models (Doomsday and Tribbles)

My complaments to writers, cast and crew. Editing is notable, as is art production. The use of 16mm style image texture, and high contrast exposure was inspired, and gave the entire production a compelling noir feel. It counteracted the use of flat period stage lighting, which jars against the underlying modern editing techniques. This whole thing is very refreshing.

Just saw this randomly recommended. Nice film! Since I'm just now finding this, I do not know the background behind it. That being said, much of the footage looks like it's cobbled together from a variety of unofficial sources and time periods. Obviously camera quality can be increasingly faked to _look_ older than it actually is, but the grain and sharpness is so stark that I have to ask: Is this come kind of remake of an _older_ fan film, or a remastering?

I love the older 80's look it reminds me of earlier episodes of Startrek The Next Generation 😁👍

It was filmed in the 80s and updated later. Pretty great

Using the 'Antyllus' configuration for the Yorktown an absolute master stroke - well done to the people who decided on that idea🖖👍

Clearly a work of love pieced together over time. Paramount, you fools, look here for creativity.

I think that this was a very nice episode, done well and and well written. I also think it is because of people like you that CBS/Paramount owes all of the fan bassed Star Trek Films and their creators a debt of thanks for keeping the dream alive.

The CGI was nice, but wondering how you got George Takei in this looking like he's from the TOS days. The grainy look of the picture took me back to TOS back in the 80's, cool. I like the HD stuff that I find. I enjoyed everything you guys did, nice work.

We actually shot George in early '85. I decided to use film rather than video as I was hoping to find the same aesthetic TOS had. The downside was we had to limit takes and push the limits of the K40 S8 stock. We had a great team back then including an awesome DP. And more recently we had the good fortune of having John Atkin join us to help bookend it with a new cast and crew to bring it home. Thanks for appreciating.

Excellent job combining past footage with new effects. I enjoyed watching this. A lot of skill, effort and expertise went into this film. It clearly shows that Trek fans are some of the most enduring and loyal groups out there.
