From keto to vegan to Mediterranean to paleo, advice on nutrition and supplementation is confusing and conflicting at the best of times. So what should we actually eat for optimal health? As a practicing clinician and academic researcher for over forty years, bestselling author and paediatric neuro-endocrinologist Dr Robert Lustig is well qualified to advise us on the science of how to protect and cultivate good health in the face of conflicting agendas and advice.
Dr Robert Lustig is Professor emeritus of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He specializes in the field of neuroendocrinology, with an emphasis on the regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system. His research and clinical practice has focused on childhood obesity and diabetes. Dr. Lustig holds a Bachelor’s in Science from MIT, a Doctorate in Medicine from Cornell University. Medical College, and a Master’s of Studies in Law from U.C. Hastings College of the Law. On RU-vid, Robert has been featured on Bracia Rodzeń, Dr Rangan Chatterjee, ABC News, Dhru Purohit, Low Carb Down Under, KenDBerryMD, Levels, Sol Food Salon, FitMind, Commune, 10 Lessons it took me 50 years to learn and many more.
Kirkland Newman Smulders is co-founder and trustee of the Horizon Foundation. Kirkland is a writer, entrepreneur and philanthropist focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as on mental health. She founded the mental health not for profit MindHealth360 and affiliated RU-vid channel The MindHealth360 Show. She has a first class degree in Modern Languages from Oxford University, an MSc in European Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an MA in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies. That is a good point! I would say that anything they push or say, we just do the opposite! The food pyramid is a good example, it's upside down and the fact that they are now trying to ban meat tells me that meat is a major component of our diet!

Banana and pineapple I have seen advertised by farm co-ops promoting the fruit, usually in summer. And eggs will be random advertising again industry funded. I assume not everywhere does this hence the where I live. But it is agricultural society/groups coming together to make the adds

The fact we allow such sugar filled processed crap to be sold without health warnings is mind-boggling. I would not want the crap food banned, but I find it outrageous that it is basically what authorities in the entire 'western world' tell us we should be consuming. I was over 40 when my health became so bad that I had to experiment with foods until I learned to eliminate plants and grains. Am now eating mostly animal fat, protein and less than 20g carbs a day and several problems I've had since my mid-teens have disappeared. I had almost no weight to lose, but despite eating over 3500 KCal a day for the past 3 months, most of which is fat, I've never felt more lightfooted! Prior to this I had been vegetarian for over a decade.

Last month I did a 20 hour, overnight survival camping trip. No tents, no food, build your own shelter and find your own food. In November, in New England. We ate Rock Tripe and Icelandic Lichen that we boiled 4 times. While the rock tripe was harder to eat because I was so put off by the chewy consistency and bland taste of it, the Iceland lichen was better. A little crunchy, like Ramen noodles that weren't fully cooked. And ever since, over been craving trying to cook Iceland lichen again. No sugar, no processed crap. Just some free food I can get from the woods, and some chicken broth.

I'm in med school and it's crazy how we're being taught so much, yet we know so little about the basics of human metabolism to the point of disregarding nutrition - the thing that should always be the most important factor in healing a patient. Unless you have an innate urge to search deeper, you're going to end up as yet another useless doctor who prescribes the same set of pills to every single patient. Nobody thinks critically about the theory we learn. We might memorize Krebs cycle and ẞ-oxidation, but we still mindlessly believe that we need to eat loads of carbs to survive, because that's what all textbooks say despite all the biochemical evidence. Some of us students are too lazy to think for ourselves so we simply stick to what we've been told. Textbooks need revising as we have to eventually put an end to this madness. We're eating ourselves to death. Some people aren't even conscious of that. They think that by eating granola every morning they're doing their health a favor. I'm just frustrated because we're doing this to ourselves. It's those big companies versus humanity. They force studies about how refined grains are actually good for your cardiovascular health even though it's complete bs. And then nobody will even think twice before putting those bs results into some textbook that future doctors are studying from. And then the whole society is sick and nobody has a clue why. A solid nutrition course, backed up with actual science should be implemented. Videos like these are doing a great job educating people that are interested, but I personally believe that this should be common knowledge. Stuff that kids are taught at school. It's not about banning the junk food - it's about letting people make educated decisions.

Very insightful commentary. I learned that the Rockefeller foundation placed people on the boards of every medical school. Why? To teach students to “practice medicine.” Apply a pharmaceutical to any and all symptoms for the “cure.” The healthcare industry has very little to do with health. It has to do with making money. I always wondered about the FDA. Food and drugs? Such a corrupt gov entity. They approve poisonous foods that make people sick, then approve the drugs to make them “well.” It’s a vicious and demonic cycle. If you haven’t figured it out yet, the pharmaceutical industry controls almost the entire healthcare industry. Very sad

I love good tea too without sugar. Sometimes I might have a spoon of honey. I really enjoy real food! And I feel the taste of fast food and bread etc. disgusting, I throw it away if I get it somewhere like in an airplane. Just thinking about this. If we removed the subsidies, we might then see a larger demand of healthy food which we might not have a large enough supply of because most of the farming is for corn and soy in america so that might jack up the healthy products because of less supply. We should change corn and soy to carrots and radishes etc

Whole foods and make your own sauces. Read labels. I thought about it, and grocery stores have isles and sections reserved specifically for "not food" items-things called food, that nobody should consume. Cookie and cracker isle, "snack food" isle, "soda and drinks" isle, majority of frozen "food" section, the bakery, and the deli-ALL full of things that lead to early death. Meanwhile, WHOLE foods are bread isle, and the produce, meat and dairy section. 100% juice frozen concentrate, and bags of frozen veggies. That is IT for true whole food. Just me, or is that messed???

Dr. Lustig, there are several doctors that fully disagree with you concerning fiber. In fact they teach that plants can be toxic for us. There are carnivores living healthfully for many years successfully with no fiber. Collagen is considered a very good food for our gut bacteria. It's not only time that's the issue. By saying you can make non-processed food cheaper if you "know how to shop" and freeze at home, you assume that 1. everyone lives near a supermarket that sells cheap fresh food; 2. everyone has money for the electricity to cook and run a freezer. A microwave meal *is* cheaper to prepare (3 mins in the microwave is cheaper than cooking carrots, potatoes etc. from scratch).
@commenter5901
@commenter5901 Год назад
To be fair, you can eat most vegetables raw if you don't have the money to use a stove, and you can also microwave them. With the junk that they add to processed food, even if it's cheaper in the short term, it won't be cheaper in the long run. You either pay for healthy food now or you pay with your health later.
@reader1236
@reader1236 Год назад
@@commenter5901 I agree - but when you're homeless in a B&B, then a microvawed meal of sausage and mash is more filling than microwaved broccoli and carrots, and long-term health is fairly low on the priority list at that point. Resisting processed foods also takes willpower, and when you're poor, that is in short supply (see Baumeister's Ego Depletion Theory).

I managed to make two keto dessert that seem rather healthy and I actually liked! Though I know they might be not suitable for someone with intolerance/allergies etc. 1. Mix cocoa powder, peanut (or any other nut) butter, coconut cream (solid), a bit of xylithol and water to texture and ease of mixing (preferably in a pan, low heat). Pour into a tray or a plate. Satisfying brownie-like texture equivalent of chocolate. 2. Mascarpone + heavy cream (mix in enough cream so that the cheese is more fluffy) with whisker or mixer. Make sause from peanut butter, water and xylitol. Add keto fruits of your choice (raspberries, blueberries etc.)

Can any of you be so kind as to share with me any fruitfull and actionable steps you've taken in regards to statins? What is the answer with the statins and the four days added? Wife was on statins for a decade and then had a double bypass, age 70. When big pharma invented statins a reason was needed to use them so the doctor schools started teaching their students cholesterol levels should be at 160-190 not the 200-250 range as taught in the 1950s. I stopped my statin med and my chlor runs 220-240, got better results at the gym, age 73. The truth is all over the internet among non-doctors. Seems the med world is 10 years behind the hollistic world. Never trust western doctors or hospitals except in emergency situations where US medicine is #1, but health care is #12 out of 13 first world systems.
@raewynannbenten1385
@raewynannbenten1385 Год назад
Statins are the worlds most profitable pharmaceutical. Medical profession is heavily pressured and rewarded to prescribe them. My cardiologist who is the heart health specialist has no problem with my decision NOT to take statins because my heart issue is congenital and not life style related. I have a healthy BMI, low lipid profile, low triglycerides, very healthy blood pressure and BPM ( I exercise 6 days a week) and I’m a vegetarian. Every General Practitioner I have ever seen, has pushed hard that I take a statin despite not having any of the markers, simply because I was born with a mild heart disorder that does not impact my life. Plus there is an emerging concern among the better informed sectors of the medical profession that some studies may be showing a correlation with high dose statin use over longer periods and a possible link to earlier onset dementia. However I should stress correlation is not equal to causation. I have real concerns about the over prescription of statins and personally will not use them. Many of my friends are on them and continually complain of nasty side effects.
