Does your head fill all of that hat? I've had a TH2 for over a year now and i am still running the original board, the only issue i had was a batter calibration error
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 2 года назад
Nope, I'm bald under there. (sorry for the late response; didn't see this until just now for some reason. I usually reply to all comments) Curious how many batteries you've run through the TH2 in that year. Some people fly a few packs every week and some fly a few packs daily so the numbers can vary quite a bit. Do you run it outdoors at all? on 2S ever or mainly 1S? Now in October of 2021, how's it holding up?

@@Funcentric Its still kicking, I run it on 2s 90% of the time as i like to abuse the shit out of my micro's, It spends more time on my shelf now than it does in the air mainly due to the power whoop i built being the best flying drone i have. I usually fly 3 packs minimum daily after work just to help relax. I fly outdoor yes

I'm glad you found some benefit to my video. I'm not now turning around to tell you to buy the Emax TH2, but just so that you're comfortable with your decision as yours, you may want to also poke your head into one of the Tinyhawk Facebook Groups (even the one that I got booted from b/c they didn't like me summarizing what's been reported in their own group for months) and just observe what others are saying (and their followups), paying particularly closer attention to those who have had their TH2 for 3 months - not just the new guys who love the first few flights they've had. As you can see from all the DISLIKES on my video here, not everyone agrees with me. However, I still think the assessment is undeniable. It's not really my opinion as much as it is an observation. Good luck with your search *Newbeedrone, HINT HINT*.

Hey Keitharoo, I've owned my THFS2 for a while now and wanted to chime in with my 2 cents. The THFS2 is still a good quad, but its not perfect. The reason I loved Funcentric's vid here is cause its a more honest review of these products minus all the slobbering or sponsored love. If you're looking for a indoor flyer then yeah, I would find something else, but if your looking for an outdoor park flyer then the THFS2 is still good. I did end up upgrading mine cause the receiver antenna broke from going in and out of the foam and the receiver doesn't have a replicable antenna (major mistake IMO). I upgraded the VTX and RX to tbs nano products and hooked them to the quad using the Tinysled Sled. Its some super tight soldering but if you can do it, it's worth. One of the reasons I chose the THFS2 is cause it was upgradable. If you end up getting one, don't buy the bundle with controller included. The controller is complete garbage. You can get the drone and an ok pair of box goggles WITH a DVR for about the same and get a separate controller that supports D8 communication protocol. This will cost a bit more but is a much better solution.
@Funcentric

@@showdownz thanks for your contribution. He’ll want to add up the cost of the tiny sled, replacement rx and particularly the VTX too though. It adds up pretty quickly. Also the space for installing the AIO fc is not standard.

hello sir! i am a newbie going into drones, has emax addressed the issues you have mentioned in the video? i would be interested to get something that will not fail prematurely. is the happymodel mobula 7 V2 any better?
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 2 года назад
No, Emax has not because they don't think it's an issue. They took the short cut for financial reasons I'm sure. Their ESC's were never meant to handle the full amp draw of the motor. To their credit though, there is a challenge in providing a quad that works with varying voltages using the same motors. Generally a high voltage quad is paired with low kv motors and a low voltage quad is paired with high kv motors. Can't really change motors, so they just dumbed down the potential of the motors for the higher voltage scenario. The Happymodel Mobula 7 V2 is what I got afterwards. I had high hopes, but honestly, the flight controller on that died pretty quickly too. The batteries that come with the Happymodel are also completely garbage and I don't say that lightly about anything. These really are junk. So definitely budget for different batteries if you get that quad. I highly recommend Newbeedrone especially if you're in the USA. The domestic support of a company that speaks English, situated in San Diego and is active on their Facebook Group is a high value thing. I love Newbeedrone and wouldn't recommend anything else. Full disclosure, I did have a Newbeedrone flight controller go bad but that wasn't until literally 1000+ battery packs. I flew that thing lots. At least 10-12 packs a day long term.

@@Funcentric first off kudos to your most prompt reply sir! you are a truly class act for sharing this info to the fortunate few who will stumble upon to read it like i did! it takes a lot of grit treading this path. sadly on my side of the pond i can only dream of newbeedrone. i only have access to what banggood offers online which can be a hit or miss deal like your accounts of the mobula. it seems a 1S/2S operable whoop may be a difficult implementation for the OEM to accomplish properly. a design optimized 1S will get toasted electronics when you run it on 2S. OTOH, an optimized 2S design will suck flying in 1S. so is the mobula 7 v2 even close to achieving this?

Glad you enjoyed the video. Just wanted to make sure I shared the info I was able to gather from various sources including my own experience. This is not really meant to be an Emax bashing video as much as it's to make sure new owners don't have too high expectations. I know all the glamor videos of the TH2 make it seems like the best thing for beginners getting into the hobby, but from what I've observed, that's a rare outcome. Glad yours is working okay. Enjoy it while it lasts. It's a blast while it's working. I still remember those days with the TH2 attached to my chest like I was never going to let it go. Some have contributed the issues to using turtle mode or on 2S, but I hesitate to go on board with that. The TH2 is a pusher meaning the props are on the bottom as opposed to the top of the frame. That means when the quad is upside down, the props are actually more protected than compared to a traditional setup. If anything, turtle mode on the TH2 would be a lot LESS vulnerable. I haven't found the motor to be particularly hot on 2S. As some have mentioned, the board is shared with the Freestyle 2 which is designed for 2S specifically so we know the board can handle 2S just fine. I contribute the issues of the TH2's board with just poor quality control or more likely, a bad batch - a bad giant batch.

So what tiny whoop would you recommend that’s made for indoors that runs on 1s and is very reliable. Preferably one that can pair to the included tiny hawk transmitter and goggles. Please reply I want to get a tiny whoop that’ll last long
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
The goggles generally will pair with anything. You can use your goggles to watch other people fly. Think of it like a radio. Quad broadcast video and your goggles receive it. So Goggles should be compatible. I'm 99.9% sure unless you can't get Raceband. In all fairness, I've only had whoops from Emax and Newbeedrone so I don't have authority to recommend a whoop to you beyond Newbeedrone definitely being more reliable than Emax. I don't have BetaFPV quads to compare to nor other offerings by Eachine and the like. I do like that Newbeedrone is based in San Diego, CA in my home country of USA. Customer service is top notch. They participate in the Facebook Groups unlike Emax who you never hear from. Don't get scared away by the toy-like look of their quads. You and I both know we fell for the Tinyhawk 2 partly b/c of the good looks.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. If you're only flying 1 battery every 2 weeks, make sure you have your batteries on storage charge of 3.80v per cell. Hardcore guys will storage charge if batteries aren't used 2-4 days. Storage charge will keep your batteries in the best shape for your next flights. Although yours has held up a year, 20 batteries really isn't that much as far as usage. A lot of of us crazy and fly 20 batteries in a day. Haha. I'm pointing at myself. Enjoy the TH2. Take care.

@@stargazer0953 I've had great experiences with Newbeedrone and they're budget friendly too. Reliability is key and things have gone well so far after at least 150 batteries - maybe even more than 200. I lost count. Newbeedrone is an American company based out of San Diego. If you're in the US, then this is good news. They're also active on the Facebook Group which is actually very helpful. Very engaged. At first, their quads may look dinky and no better than a JJRC H35 toy quad, but they're tuned very well and reliable so far. Very unassuming performer. They have a number of products from $50 quads to $150 ones. If you're flying most indoors, I would recommend the Acrobee Pro. It's a brushed one. You'll like the price, but it will require replacement motors on a regular basis as is the norm for brushed quads. Motors are decently priced and the quad itself is ridiculously quiet. I can't even tell it's on unless I'm looking at it. Seriously. NBD offers different type of motors, colors of frames if you're into modding. It comes with Gold motors which are the fast ones and required for flips and rolls. If you're flying indoors exclusively and don't plan on flips and rolls indoors, you can get away with the black motors as backup. If you fly primarily outdoors but want indoor control ability, then the Acrobee BeeBrain BL (brushless) is great. The tuning is ridiculously smooth. I'm always double checking to make sure I'm really on acro and not on stability mode b/c it's that smooth. Will make you think you're a better pilot than you are. A lot louder than the brushless one above. I own both and love both for different reasons. I'll try to do a video in the next couple of weeks about brushed vs brushless.

There are reports of failed boards too, but not nearly as much as Emax to a point where it's a known issue. Newbeedrone is based in San Diego, CA. They're very active on their Facebook Group and Instagram which to me is of great value in itself. The question now is "brushed vs brushless". @@mathiaskildedal The one I was referring to is a GepRC Skip HD3. However, there isn't a generic quad I'd recommend to everyone. It really depends on what your goals and expectations are. Good customer service but sometimes it take a couple email reminders to get them moving. The products are known to be solid and really are. There are a lot of toothpicks to choose from in the market and I only have one so I can't really say whether this particular one is good for you or not - especially since I don't know you. The SkipHD3 has been taking hits pretty well but I think that's just a characteristic of toothpicks that are light in general and less momentum. Nice channel! To add my feedback for everyone reading this…Got my TH2 in August 2020. 4 months later, the two rear motors don’t spin anymore. I was flying 6-8, 1s packs a day, 3-4 days a week (hey working from home 'cause you know pandemic). Started noticing issues about 3 months in but I was already outgrowing it so I moved to the TH2 Freestyle to carry an Insta360 GO and loving it so far! I’ll keep an eye on the VTX. Even after a month with the Freestyle, I’m already thinking either a 5” or something like the iFlight Pro Tek 25. Still looking for an indoor tiny whoop to fly in the evening after work. I’m commercial Part 107 and coming from all DJI stuff (Inspire 1, Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, Spark), FPV is just so much more fun! Hey Funcentric! You helped me a while ago and I like your honest opinions so here I am again! :) So I'm looking to get a new whoop (my TH2 broke, and I'm pretty sure its because of reasons you also know about) and I think I got it narrowed down to the Mobula6 or the NewBeeDrone Hummingbird F4 Pro. The problem with the Mobula is that it looks perfect except that it seems to have some quality control issues. And I know how high you are on NewBeeDrone. (Sometimes I suspect you are secretly an employee of theirs always boosting their products LOL!) And their Hummingbird F4 pro is priced competitively to the Mobula, and the performance is equal if not better from what I have seen. But their is one common problem with the F4 pro that many people seem to encounter. This reviewer (not me) says it well: This is by far the best flying race whoop I have ever had - all three of them were. It has an excellent tune out of the factory, it has plenty of power, it has all the features you want, and it wins races. The improved gyro puts this whoop head and shoulders above all the competition. The quad-blade Azi props on those wonderfully responsive NBD motors are a winning combination. The camera is clear and handles low-light racing better than any other in its weight class. The LEDs make it easy on race directors and spectators to determine who is flying what whoop. Were it not for an absolutely fatal flaw this would be the single best whoop you could buy and it would not be close. But one unlucky hit will kill the receiver on this whoop. It is a design flaw that Newbeedrone has been trying to fix through multiple board revisions and it's still there. I have lost 3 of them to this flaw. Once you get that RXLOSS message in your OSD it's either solder on an external receiver (which adds weight that largely ruins the flying qualities of the aircraft) or forget it. And you only have a one month warranty - which for a craft with a known design flaw is absolutely unacceptable. That's why this whoop will break your heart - it is so very close to perfection but because of the serious unresolved hardware flaws I CANNOT recommend this product. When this whoop is working it performs almost flawlessly. But if one gate hit can kill your whoop then all the fantastic performance in the world cannot make up for a complete lack of durability. Maybe someday Newbeedrone will get this product right - they are so tantalizingly close. But until that happens, steer away from this product unless you can live with an external receiver or there is a revision that fixes the dead RX issue. It seems like the design of where the RX is, is bad. What do you say to this? Should I still get the Hummingbird F4 pro? The Mobula? Another NewBeeDrone whoop? Or another whoop altogether? Thanks!

@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
I found out some news today and will be releasing a Part 2 to this video. I don't know if you've read through the other comment responses. So what's happening is that the ESC's on the FC board aren't rated at a high enough amperage for the motors that are paired with it. Essentially, the motors are able to draw more amps than the ESC's can handle which explains why we are experiencing different results when comparing to the Tinyhawk Freestyle 2 which has different motor specs. News is that Emax has recognized this. Most including myself misunderstood the warning label on the quad which states to change the Profile Rate to Profile 2 when using 2S. Many of us misinterpreted this as changing the PID profile to Profile 2. We thought this b/c it is normal to have PID settings different based on different battery sizes. It's quite new to limit the Profile Rate as that's not anything I've seen before to be required of customers operating a quad. Basically, Emax is telling us we cannot change rates to be any higher than what's included for Rate Profile 2. This is highly unusual b/c Rates are generally very customized to each pilot and people are expected to change them all the time. So rather than creating a new board with ample ESC's with a amp rating high enough to sustain the amp draw of the motors b/c it would cost too much in production, they've limited customers to what they can do on the quad for settings that is not standard practice. At the end of the day, Emax is telling us it's our fault for operating the quad incorrectly which technically is true.
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
For an indoor whoop, I'd like to refer you to my video about Brushed vs Brushless quads. There's a few things you need to consider to determine. There's no overall best indoor quad. The ones in the examples do not have 4k/HD cameras or anything fancy like that. I like Newbeedrone b/c they're based in the United States, San Diego actually. Customer service is excellent. They participate in the Facebook Groups. That in itself is a big win as far as I'm concerned. I've been very happy with their products and each has gone through at least 400 batteries apiece and still running strong.

If so, what whoop should I get that is friendly for beginners, but I won't grow out of?
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
I'm only reporting my own experience and that of others that I've informally surveyed on Facebook Groups and Instagram. There are a few that have TH2's that are still using them after 3 months, but not nearly as many that have had issues. If I were to go back knowing what I know, I would've gotten a Newbeedrone to start with. Nothing but good experiences after hundreds of battery packs. The frame is not indestructible like the Emax ones, but they are cheap to replace and indestructible doesn't really mean much if the quad isn't flying. As others have mentioned in the comments, the Freestyle AIO board is the same as the one in the TH2 which makes me think it could've been a bad batch that was used in the TH2. I won't pretend to know why but again, these are observations - not opinions. Don't get me wrong, the Emax TH2 is great while it flies but just too many people who have left to go to other brands and I can see why. So the long winded answer is that maybe you can give the TH2 a try since you got it as a gift and maybe you'll be one of those that have it still working after 3 months of continual use. I just wouldn't modify it too much b/c it may most likely end up being time and dollars going into something that may end up no longer flying. The Emax customer service isn't what it's cracked out to be. Whereas Newbeedrone is based in the USA and participates heavily in their Facebook Group. The only whoop I have that I say would be less likely to grow out of would be the Newbeedrone Beebrain BL (brushless). The board on the Mobula7 had issues too. The Newbeedrone Acrobee Pro (brushed) is great, but you won't be able to do acro as easily and I'd consider more as a cruiser.
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
I'm thinking about it a little more and I don't want to kill your fire nor that of whoever gifted the TH2 to you. You should still be very excited about it b/c it's a good quad (while it works). Maybe just play with it with caution and don't fall in love with it. If you have this knowledge I've shared in your back pocket and you do end up experiencing the same thing, you at least won't be as disappointed. I'm hesitant to tell you to straight up return it b/c it's junk b/c it's not. I just felt like I was obligated to report my experiences. My unique position to have surveyed owners to be able to report was also something I felt like I shouldn't just keep to myself. Going through all this made me realize also that as much as I cherish and support professional reviewers, I can appreciate that they're so overwhelmed with product reviews that they may not have the experience of long term ownership of a quad. I hesitate to do any real reviews of quads until I've gone through at least 50-100 battery packs to really get to know the ins and outs. Haiboxing (rc car company) for instance offered some reviewers a free rc car in exchange for a review but it had to be done in 2 weeks. There's nothing I can contribute that would be helpful if I'm limited to driving it for only 2 weeks so I didn't take the offer. There's so much on RU-vid these days that I don't think it helps to just provide more of the same.

They've got so many in their fleet, it's always time to move onto the next thing. I'm genuinely happy for you that your two Emax products are still in good shape. You're definitely not the norm. This is meant to be less of an Emax bashing video and more of just letting people know so they're not too disappointed if/when they too experience the same things. To participate in the survey, it would be great if you could come back after 3 months of regular flying and report back. It's good to have people comment who have hit the 3 month mark and are still flying on their original VTX's of the Freestyle 2 or that their TH2 is still operational. I'm not looking to be "right", so all info is good info. Please do visit back and comment. Would love to hear from you. People need to know that they may be just dating their Emax quads temporarily rather than falling too in love initially and then becoming too disappointed. You never forget your first quad.

How difficult is it to switch the vtx in the th2f for some one who has no soldering skills?
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
Extremely. I further reinforce this in my more recent video about how the THF2 is not for beginners. It's annoying at best. What makes it difficult is that it's not just wires connecting it. There's a plastic pin connector that you need to remove the stock VTX from. It's a bit hard to explain why it's difficult, but if you attempt it, you'll soon see why. I was trying to simply replace my RX antenna yesterday, spent over an hour and still can't get it done. Stripping the antenna to prepare for the soldering was luckily completed but soldering it onto the pad was challenging and at the last moment when I was trying to solder the ground to the pad, the other piece snapped off the board. So basically gotta start over preparing a new antenna. It's annoying that there's no UFL connector like every other quad in this class has.

The trick when removing the motors is loosen all 3 screws before removing ANY of them. Once one screw is out, the motor can spin and will rip the wires cause they are super delicately attached. This lesson cost me a quick 10$. And kept me out of the air till the new motor arrived. Also thank you for this vid. Good info and its needed. Wish I would have found it sooner. Thanks for the feedback. I think Emax has done an effective job of marketing themselves as the go-to for new folks. The new guys gravitate towards Emax w/o really questioning it b/c of all the hype from reviewers. They including myself when I first got the TH2 don't really take into account that reviewers may not have a lot of time with the quads long enough to really speak to ownership as much as they can about initial performance of a tester quad. Figured I'd share some thoughts as an actual user flying it as a primary quad (at the time).

Just got a th2 for Christmas and I haven't used it yet. If it breaks by itself bc of the board or something failing (and not due to my crashing) and it is in New condition will emax refund me or exchange me with a new one?
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
I can't speak for Emax. However, I can tell you that I was denied specifically b/c my Freestyle 2 looked like it had crashed. It wasn't in bad shape at all. No grass stains or anything. Basically, the props were not in perfect condition. The crash was due to the VTX failing, so that's quite unfair. This is their email to me: "Unfortunately I will not be able to cover this under warranty. We only cover factory defects and there is some flying damage on this craft. I can see damage to the props alone with scuffs on the frame by the motors. Also looks like you tapped over damage to the vtx antenna." The TH2 is a lot more durable as far as the frame. I do think it's indestructible. However, it is very vulnerable to grass stains particularly on the underside of the frame. The LED's will rip off eventually and you'll end up yanking the rest off yourself. You can't really clean that even with patience and a q-tip. You'll drive yourself nuts cleaning it and every motor would have to be desoldered in order to remove all electronic components to freely clean the frame wish soap and water. Then you'd have to resolder all the motors back. Not something anyone really does. It's like a BMW or AUDI w/o the performance. Hard to work on. If your quad is in new condition, you have a chance at a warranty claim. If it shows any sign of wear and yes, they'll look super closely, you're out of luck.

I definitely do recommend the Freestyle 2 version over the regular Tinyhawk 2. Two very different uses, but the Freestyle has a much more reliable setup. The pairing of motors with the flight controller is much better suited on the Freestyle for sure. I've had good luck with a BetaFPV quad as of late. The Beta85x Pro 2 is my current favorite.

Yes, I'm aware of the quads have the same board. I don't recall if they're flashed with the same firmware though. I should've mentioned that in the video. It's only a guess b/c I can't really explain it myself but maybe it was a bad batch? Maybe they changed their manufacturing methods. Just poor quality control perhaps. I can't make any claims to know. Could be that beginners are naturally reporting more issues. But my informal surveys were me initiating conversation with many owners of the TH2 - not just ones that have reported or posted issues. I was surprised to hear the overwhelming numbers of folks who have had similar issues as myself vs ones that were just fine after several months. I tried to be fair in the video starting out with what I like about Emax as a whole and I genuinely really do hope they look more into this b/c I do believe the TH2 would be awesome if their components were more reliable. Same thoughts on the VTX of the Freestyle 2. I just wish I took more initiative to research actual long term end customers' experiences vs relying on only RU-vid videos by reviewers. Nothing against them, but I can appreciate that they have a ton of quads and have limits on long term experiences with any given quad. I'm always curious what professional reviewers fly as their go-to when they're not making a video.

The KV rating on the TH2 and the Freestyle 2 are vastly different. The FC I don't believe is inherently bad on its own. It's the collaboration with the motors that makes the TH2 vulnerable to ESC's blowing out vs the same ESC's on the Freestyle 2. The Freestyle 2 uses 7000 or 7500kv motors whereas as the TH2 uses 16000kv motors. The higher KV motors are probably drawing more amps than the ESC's can handle. Since the Freestyle 2 has a vastly lower KV rating, it's not drawing as many amps and isn't getting as close to the limit of the ESC's amperage rating. Hence more failure on the TH2 than the Freestyle 2. For more info on how all that works, you can check out my video playlist about Brushless Conversion for RC cars. Same principle regarding how the components work together.

Sure thing, glad you enjoyed it. I have another video about brushed vs brushless quads, how to pick. It uses Newbeedrone as examples *hint hint*. They're ducted so they have those propeller guards that's important to you. The TH Freestyle 2 has known VTX issues. Still a good quad but if you get it, you'll need to budget another $25-30 on top of the cost of the $120 quad. At that point, you have so many more options w/o the reliability problem and need to solder that it's probably worth exploring other options. The problem turned out to be the board just all of a sudden decided it was not going to work in D16 mode anymore. I had to get the BetaFPV Lite radio to bind in D8. No problems after that, but I did replace a few boards and all motors and camera because I did not believe it was a problem with the radio. Every single new board would failsafe after a few seconds in D16. Strangely enough, my Tinyhawk Freestyle 2 continues to work in D16 mode and it uses the exact same board. I don't think anyone will be able to answer that for you. You'll have to be more specific. It depends on what you take as priority. Personally, I prioritize availability and response from companies as a must. For that, if you're in the USA, nothing beats Newbeedrone as they're located domestically in San Diego, have a good response times and are active in their Facebook Groups. It also depends on whether this is your first quad and what you plan to do with it. Indoors vs outdoors. If indoors and you have a dog/cat, you'll want a brushless one. A brushed one will suck up all the hairs and you'll be clearing it out every two seconds. If you need it to be completely silent due to sleeping kids or wife who gets annoyed, you'll want a brushed one.

Although it's not the TH2's VTX that is known to fail, it certainly can. The VTX that's known to fail is on the THF2. I asked the same question as you are asking now of many folks with the THF2 and there's a big consensus on the benefits and value of using the TBS Unify Pro Nano 5g8. That's the one I used. It's quite expensive at $30ish relative to the overall price of the quad, but it kept me going, so I did buy and install that w/o issue. What ultimately had me sell the THF2 is indicated in my THF2 video. Much of it is the design characteristics of the quad and the poor quality and non standard sized flight controller.

In defense of Emax though, just realize that Amazon's return policy as you've noted is in fact too good. Good voltage but would struggle to stay in the air. I suspect the esc but heard the motor connectors are worth checking out. Just got a tinyhawk 2 a few weeks ago. Probably 100 packs threw it. Crashed and may have had the pigtail get caught in a motor. Now the right rear motor seems weaker and it too struggles to stay in the air. The led's arent as bright on that position also. I absolutly love how these fly. Too bad the electronics are not too reliable.
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
Sorry for the late response. Didn't see you pop in. You can use BLHeli downloaded as a Chrome Addon app to check the ESC's. If you see 4, then they're good. Mine were good too. Yes, check the connections of the motors. I actually hope that's the problem for you b/c that means you have a solution that doesn't involve a replacement board. If the connections are good, you've reflashed the ESC's and replaced the motors and it's still having trouble, I suspect it's the board. But since the LED's are dimming, that tells me it's most likely a connection issue which is good news. Check that. Sometimes the plastic connectors disconnect or have poor connections under the plastic that you can't really see so you may need to tear it apart to check or buy a new motor with the new replacement connector. Let me know how it goes. Would be interested to know. From what I've observed of other people, the S seems to be more reliable than the TH2, but I really haven't done significant surveys for the S like I have for the TH2, so can't really speak to that.

@@billfromelma That's the same problem I had with the motor. One would twitch after a certain RPM. But after using a plastic connector from the TH1, it still twitched, so it's not the connection. Have you checked BLHeli to make sure the ESC's are all shown? You make some interesting points but the board on the TinyHawk Freestyle II is the same board as the one on the TinyHawk II. The emax website has the same flight controller part for all Tinyhawk II series products: Tinyhawk II, Tinyhawk II Race, Tinyhawk II Freestyle. So... The board death results, since it's the same board, are probably a combination of general qc, and in-flight incident types. Reliability to be expected then is somewhere in the middle with respect to the flyer type and amount of abuse the board has had to take. The FS II won’t last long if it’s being smashed into a wall every day -- you’re more likely to break a motor or the frame on that, so it’s more for intermediate flyers. New flyers forgetting to disarm as quickly as possible, or using turtle mode to flip back over are likely more common on the TH II. I think emax shouldn’t even have turtle mode added, honestly. I’d like to see the boards have a higher tolerance for failure of course, the next they should do is beef up the ESCs to give more over head. In my own personal experience the TH II board has been fine for the last 2 months so far. VTX was defective out of the box on TH FS II from day 1 and Emax warranty replaced it.

You bring up very good and very fair points. I don't disagree with any of what you've shared and thanks for contributing to the comments here. Every experience helps so I'm glad you took some time to write a few lines. There's a chance that because the TH2 is geared more towards beginners that they have more issues due to the handling of the product. However, there's been overwhelming difference in experiences of the TH2 vs the THFreestyle2. As you spoke about yourself, the THFreestyle2 definitely has a defective VTX. I unfortunately wasn't as lucky as you to have gotten a replacement as mine was not broken out of the box. But handled only 20 batteries which was a disappointment. I would say a vast majority of Freestyle 2 owners are not on their original VTX after the first 3 months. As for the turtle mode causing issues on the TH2, wouldn't this mess up the ESC's and not the board? From what I've gathered from other people including myself, the ESC's were fine and not contributing to the motor issues.
@JohnCuppi
@JohnCuppi 3 года назад
@@Funcentric If the board: - Can plug into the PC and is recognize by BetaFlight - Some but not all motors spin... - And, you know that the motor's integrity is not in question, solder is solid, etc Then that means one of the ESCs on the flight control board died. The motor test tab can help to diagnose this also by trying to spin each one up individually and then checking the results. What you described in the video 4:05 about trying to replace a motor, clean the motor, check your soldering job, sounded like a motor was not spinning up? Then, you did everything you could to try to get it to work again, but it ultimately failed because the motor and your soldering work was not the issue, it was a failure of the ESC component on the board. There's an exception: In the past when Emax did not direct-solder motors to the TinyHawk v1 and in some of the earlier TinyHawk 2's what happened was the connector itself went bad from impact and the solution was to direct solder the motors. That's why Emax has been direct soldering motors on TinyHawk 2 recently. One other way that a board can die, a voltage spike can kill the on-board regulator. This is actually a cheap, and easy fix unlike an ESC failure but a nuisance if it happens to any board, I made a video about how to fix it on BetaFPV 85 Pro 2 whoop drone.

@@Funcentric good call on checking BLHeli but an ESC can unfortunately report in as being there but still not actually function. Often times they do not end in complete and total death but will be fried enough to not correctly transmit the right pulses to the motors. The firmware is in tact and can be read from the data side, but that’s all. These applications can be quite “dumb” with their ability to report more specific issues, due to the nature of the hardware itself having little in terms of available information, so I can see why you may have thought that the ESC was ok simply because BLHeli reported it in as showing up. The lights might be on - but no one’s home, basically. Quickest way to rule out a motor issue without buying anything is to swap a known working motor into the non working motors spot. If doesnt function, then you know the ESC is out and to not waste money buying a new motor. This is what I do.

You must have not had it for too long. My guess is you’ve had it less than 3 months. I’ll have a video out soon explaining why the THF2 is not for beginners but just so you’re made aware now and can better prepare yourself. Just so you’re not too disappointed when it happens: 1. Motors are weak and need to be replaced more often than most brushless motors. 2. Replacement aftermarket ones aren’t available because of the mounting points being 3 points instead of 4 foe that size motor. 3. The VTX prematurely fails and removing the existing to solder a new one won’t be easy for newbies. It also adds to the cost substantially. 4. Both antennas are soldered. Emax Diane use a UFL connector. Preparing the antenna by pulling the 3 layers to expose the actual antenna to solder and then ground it won’t be easy either. 5. Soldered motors are much more difficult for newbies to replace than simple plug in ones. Newbies also wouldn’t notice the few grams of weight that would’ve added.

I'm hesitant to recommend anything I don't personally own for a long enough duration to really know the ins and outs of it. A few things to think about though for you. I have great things to say about Newbeedrone as a whole. If you're based in the USA, it helps tremendously to have a company also in the US, San Diego. I've run through at least 800 battery packs through my BeeBrainBL and I'm still on the same flight controller. No issues. I just keep losing my antenna from crashes, but a new UFL one just snaps right back on. NBD does have RTF kits. I'd recommend the brushless version unless you fly exclusively indoors and need something super quite in which case, you'll want the brushed version. I have a video comparing the two which you may want to watch if you're considering either of these. If you know you'll be in the hobby a long time, then you'll want to choose components separately. The EV800DM goggles are a budget pair at about $80 and the BetaFPV Lite Radio 2 for $45 is what I use for my 7 quads. You can then buy the quad separately.

For the THF2, it's just the VTX that has failed most people.
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
It's not the board itself that is necessarily faulty; it has to do with the collaboration of the parts. Assuming it's the ESC that failed in the AIO on the Emax Tinyhawk 2, ESC's generally fail for 2 reasons (see my video on brushless conversion of an RC car), voltage and/or amps. The ESC is rated for the voltage of 1S and 2S so that's fine. However, it could very likely be the amp draw from the higher KV motors on the Tinyhawk 2 that exceeds the amperage rating of the ESC's in that quad. The reason we don't see a similar situation with the Freestyle 2 I suspect is b/c the motors are much smaller in KV on the Freestyle. It's only 7000 or 7500kv vs the TH2's 16000kv. That's pretty big difference. I'm assuming the TH2's 16000kv motors draw more amps, more than the ESC's can handle.

Same principle regarding how the components work together and how the ratings need to match each other so that each component is safe. Conclusion is that in the next iteration of the Tinyhawk, Emax just needs to either lower the KV on the motors or up the amp rating on the ESC's.

Is it because the vtx really cant take the heat from power above 100mw... and all they did was unlock it for artic fliers but its the same old hardware. In which case the customers asked too much lol. I'm Going to keep mine at 100mw and see if it lasts
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 3 года назад
I assume you're referring to the Freestyle 2? That's a possibility but it's designed for 200mw so customers should expect that it should be able to handle it. Keeping it at 100mw is probably a good idea but if it's true that the 200mw is what's killing it, that's horrible marketing and false claims on Emax's part.
@choppergirl
@choppergirl 3 года назад
@@Funcentric I would suspect the obvious, that the hardware designers never designed it to withstand the heat of 200mw... customers demanded more power... marketing said can we give them what they want and drive it with more power, but not cost us anything extra. Engineering frowned and said we'd have to fab a whole new chip, that's cost $200,000. Management came back again backing up marketing, and said, do it, and do it for nothing extra in cost! Engineering shrugged and said you heard what pointyhaired boss man said, feeed more power though it. Sure, yeah, it will burn out in a few months, but you want to keep your job or not? Not our problem, let them find out the hardway when warranty repairs come rolling back. So, that's the way it goes at big companies. You ask the impossible, marketing wants to please you, engineering says not going to happen, management says make it so... and this is what you get. Your 200mw vtx at no extra cost... out of a hardware chip probably nowhere near rated for it. Most Wifi Routers run at 100mw, btw... 100mw is not a lot of power, nor is 200mw, but but when you're pumping it through a little piece of silicon with no heatsink on it, no cooling, no active cooling at all, those little chips get very hot. If you buy a 3 in 1 camera / vtx like the Eachine TX-05, you find that out fast, how fast they get sitting there plugged into a 1s, at any output power setting. 25mw, 100mw, 200mw... They start to cook. And that's without the foam box padding around it. Whoever thought you could run it with the foam box around it was insane, that stuff is like insulation. That box is only legit to be around it for shipping purposes.

Yes, that's one of the considerations people have before finally going to a different brand. You've already committed to the love of the TH2 while it worked, probably have extra props and had done all this research on it, and so I understand the dedication. I was in the same place as were a lot of other owners. Eventually, they move on though. Sometimes it takes people 1 TH2 and for others, it takes up to 3 TH2's before they decide to get something else and never look back. If it wasn't a known issue, I may have more strongly considered getting a new one and keeping the old one for parts. The issue is repetitive though. It would feel like I'm renting a TH2. Also the value of the parts isn't that much. Parts equate to just propellers and the camera. The frame won't break. If you do go with the TH2, please report back and comment here after 3 months. I genuinely hope you're one of the few that still have a working one, but I wouldn't bet on it. I'm just one guy with one experience. My advice is for you to join the Facebook Group about the TH2, read other people's comments and then make your own decision. Good luck with whatever you decide. You can try the floss method. Feed a string of floss through the hole of the propeller before you place it on the shaft of the motor. What it will do is that it'll make the hole of the propeller slightly smaller so that it's more snug on the shaft of the motor. Seriously. I caution doing this on the Tinyhawk 2 though in my experience, they're very tight as it is and removing them is a pain. Thanks for nothing emax. I now put in a standard AIO board but I had to 3d print an adapter that weighs 3 grams because guess what.. The AIO mounting is also proprietary! The new aio board has been doing fine for a few months now, but it flies way worse because of the heavier weight and 2 more motors broke (these times it was my fault though, they were both real crashes into tree branches) I'm just gonna sell the frame, batteries and 3 motors now and use camera, vtx and the new universal board for a new build. Have you seen part 2 of the video? I’m working on part 3 but will give you the gist of it. Basically, the ESC’s are not rated to handle the full amp draw of the motors. Emax dumbs it down with software which is why they instruct to use rate profile 1 on 2S. It’s confusing because while the PID profile automatically changes when it senses each battery voltage, the rate profile does not automatically change. If you run 2S on full throttle without a scaled 75% limit, an ESC is likely to blow.

Since you have at least 2 quads, the babyhawk can hopefully keep you flying w/o any downtime while waiting for the VTX when you do finally order one. You might want to research now on how to do it. 1. Keep an eye on the Facebook Groups and/ or DM some of the owners of the TH2 to get their feedback. Most newbies or potential buyers won't dig deep in the FB Groups enough to follow along to the end of current posts to notice the trend, but there's definitely a case of frequent premature failing boards for the TH2. Not even a question. 2. Part 2 of my video talks about why it's happening. The ESC's are not rated to handle the amp draw of the motors. I'm working on a Part 3 answering how this is happening, but it's taking some time to produce the video. I should have it out in the coming week(s). 3. Newbeedrone actually has the highest reliability from the names you've brought up. They also are a US company that participates heavily in their Facebook Group so issues are proactively being resolved. You're probably correct about the BetaFPV though. I don't have personal experience and haven't researched that company enough to say with any authority. I think partly why there are so many fanboys of Emax is b/c we've all done our research exclusively on RU-vid and see nothing but the hype and how it's great for beginners. All this comes from people who don't own or fly the quad long term so they can't really speak in those terms. As customers of Emax products as our first FPV quads, we want that much more to like it. We're in love and want to be convinced we made the right decision. I was there. I did exactly what everyone else did. Same boat. 4. I'm glad you're doing well with what I assume is your retail store. 5. Here's a secret that's being released in Part 3 of my video series that will help you. The current CLI dump on Emax's website does not include the throttle limit on Rate Profile 2 like it's supposed to. People who have the latest batch of Emax TH2's if indeed it's loaded with the current CLI will be frying their boards left and right on 2S. The ESC's are under rated for the motors and Emax's way of preventing damage to the ESC's is to dumb it down with software. Hence the warning card. However if people follow that on the current CLI, nothing will happen other than the Rates change b/c the throttle limit is missing.

Yes! Exactly! Generally, the manufacturers require videos to be released before a certain period. They do get beta versions before the final release which gives them more time with the quad, but with all the quads they review, they can't really fly all of them long term and provide feedback from an ownership point of view. They're good at what they do with good reason, but there are limits. Yes, as long as we keep that in mind when watching them, we'll be alright. I was recently offered an RC car from Haiboxing to review, but they required the review be done within 2 weeks which isn't enough to put the batteries I wanted through it to provide any sort of valuable info to share. To anyone reading this, just want to make it clear that this is not the case for everyone, I’ve owned both the tinyhawk 2 and the tinyhawk 2 freestyle for just over 5 months now, bought the freestyle a few weeks after the tinyhawk because it is just much better suited for outdoor flights, and I could continue to use the same 1s packs! Both quads are still running strong!, and that’s despite the fact that I’ve clipped off and had to repair motor wires, clipped off the spi rx antenna, have had multiple high altitude crashes 🙃, and one of the flight controllers has been completely submerged in nasty rain water for over 10 minutes(had to drive home and get a ladder to retrieve it lol), so I guess what I’m saying is from my experience there’s nothing that Can destroy these tinyhawks 😂 I will say if you aren’t aren’t a tight budget there are definitely better options out there, but what emax offers for new pilots at this price is unparalleled.

Thanks for contributing to the comments with your experience. Glad to hear that at least a few of these are still running strong. Yes, the Freestyle 2 is definitely suited for outdoors. I picked up mine for the same reason (to reuse existing 1S batteries). Definitely surprised to hear about the waterproof FC. So lucky that you still got it running, nice! I don't doubt the abuse that the TH series can handle. It's the FC reliability that I'm most concerned about. Again, glad that yours is still running strong. I feel ya man. Some people feel they’ve done too much research when they decided on the Emax, that they are so resistant to continue looking for something new. They don’t want to start over so they grow so attached to the brand can can’t accept that maybe the reviews they’ve watched aren’t reviews but just tests of the quads. I’ve heard of people buying up to 5 Emax products before finally letting go. Every time I looked at mine, it made me upset so I ended up selling it for a huge discount, both the TH2 and the THF2.

Think all these are overpriced for what they are maybe by factor of 2. My TH2 Runcam or VTX became faulty soon after a 5ft drop to indoor floor at very low speed est 4mph. I'm just using it with grainy dark video. My props keep flying off on even grass drops and my camera angle screws keep falling out to where I now put tape over them. Still I don't regret buying it for the fun and learning. But $100+ ..wish we could all band together and just boycott that.

Emax as a company has completely ruined any hope I had that they care about their customers and customer service. After receiving a completely defective drone from them I was sad to discover they do not want to help me. My drone took off due to factory rates that they had set wrong. Then the Vtx must have fried instantly. Because the drone took off, the camera shutoff, and the beep mode did not work. Thanks for your help. If only emax would have been as helpful.

I love the tinyhawk 2. I do recommend it. It's so awesome. What is it going to hurt. People are going to buy more then one drone. Thats the fun part having multiple quads. If you don't like it get rid of it. Any flight controller isn't %100 from for not lasting long. Ive had mine for almost 2 years and I have never had any problems with it. Every quad has their issues. Not everyone is going to have This problem. I have a few high end quads that have failed after a month of use. But see you can fix it. Just like any other quad that stops working. This video is kinda ignorant. Sorry but true. Its crazy that you say you don't recommend it but after you fixes it then you say your glad you bought it. Wow. If this was true. There would be 1000's of videos just like this one. And yours is the only 9ne that I've seen on this. There are videos how to put a Ulf connector on quads.
@Funcentric
@Funcentric 2 года назад
I’m glad you had a good experience, but I think you’re misunderstanding my point. Although I learned a few things from owning the quad, I would never recommend it for a beginner. A beginner quad needs to have a few things to make it a beginner quad. A UFL connector is one of them. Also purposely pairing an ESC that cannot handle the high amperage of the motor is unethical. I don’t need to repeat all the reasons but I think you get the idea that a lot of folks will spend more time trying to fix the thing than actually flying. Not the case with a Newbeedrone product which is much higher quality as far as components are concerned. Also local USA customer service. EMAX just has way too much hype - more than it deserves by far. Just don’t want everyone sucked into it like I and many others did.

@@scottmcbride2237 the reason there aren’t more of these videos is because the ones that are out there are mostly paid promotions. People who aren’t paid to make videos generally won’t make them. At least when you compare it to people who are paid. This video isn’t meant to convince you of anything. If you think I am judging you, you’ve got the wrong idea. @@scottmcbride2237 I don't intend to call you stupid. You and I just have different assessments. That's all. Correct, not everyone is making money from their videos. Sorry to hear about your THFreestyle2. Unless it looks pristine, Emax won’t honor a warranty because they will blame a crash even if a failed VTX is the reason for the crash which makes zero sense. Hope your TH2 lasts longer than the rest of ours. Looks like the other guy who commented here did have good luck with his. Every time I hear about someone just buying one, I cringe a little. Part of me wants to tell him he’s in for some disappointments but part of me wants to let him have his fun first. Hopefully this video catches people before they buy one. I still hope Emax finds a new supplier for their electronics because they do everything else right. Design, execution, marketing is all top notch. If they were a car company, these recalls wouldn’t be acceptable.

So far emax has helped a bit with customer service with my babyhawk 1. But waiting for receiver that works wit the e06. There’s little things with all the cheaper drones. And controller at one point it wouldn’t turn on. Man it’s disappointing like I think a new mounting system is also needed for their boards a frickin sponge or something cuz soon as u hit the two side ones crack and it’s right next to cam port, and antenna and USB port etc. Something because they knew that shit was happening before the sales and it’s a plus for their pockets temporarily but losing long term buyers. I’m leaning away from the four and five inch emax quads now so that six. Cuz they are fun till shit starts to fail.

I talk a bit about the warranty in this new follow up video. Basically, Emax has under rate the ESC's that they're pairing with the motors on the TH2 which was a mistake. They're covering themselves and preventing themselves from having to respond to warranty claims by "warning" to note use certain rates. It's silly to me. More info here. I've put together and published a follow up video discussing why there are frequent and premature failure rates on the TH2 but not the THF2 even though they both share the same FC. Hope you find this useful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lj59BUEXZKk.html
