Deleting your Instagram is one of the best things you're gonna do in your life. Not being trapped in that toxic dopamine addictive loop certainly was for me.
@Veganface Try to meet people in different places; gyms, bars etc. Join up different organizations that deal with different skills, like camping, hiking, swimming. The people there are likely to have the same mindset as you do. The trick is to talk with as many people as you can.
there was a time when the internet was a escape from reality. Today taking a walk in nature or having a chat with a friend is a escape from the internet
@@raggedyexynos9487 no.. good for you for being 12 this is the worst period of time to be in your prime. You won't have to graduate or move out or get a job during covid little one. Or so I hope
this dude is so underrated, he explains and portrays how people are influenced by social media thinking these people are happy when they aren't. The best thing you can compare yourself to is your past self, to see how much you improved when you get older. There is always hope and happiness kids, you just need to find it in yourself.
I want to be a bit pedantic here nd say that the primary purpose of social media is to sell you to companies so that they can sell you things. The users of a social media site aren't their customers they're the product.
"Compare yourself to your self" true man... I, a 14 year old, was really feeling stupid that I don't have a good physique (it isn't like I had a completely fat one...I was having a flat tummy)...untill I discovered calisthenics, ohh boy it help me with my confidence, before I used to compare myself with others, now I see it like "yeah, did 5 pull ups yesterday, did 6 today, let's GOOO!" Keep up with the quality content :)
the true cost of fitness is next to nothing; basics basics basics, eat food lift heavy weights or your bodyweight consistently and there ya go. anybody trying to sell anything fitness related is automatically suspect.
Once again josh you really have a talent for making videos! Storytelling, editing, presentation is all on point, you’re gonna blow up one day bro ik it
My classmate from elementary is 160cm in height and about 140-150kg in weight. She started getting fat at age 14, not because of disorders or illness (her mom is skinny, her dad used to play football (not US football) and her brother is fit too). She was getting fat due to overeating junk food. She is now 28, and she recently posted few pictures of her at a beach wearing a bikini with a caption: I am happy the way I look, body positivity ftw. I told her that she can be happy as much as she wants to, but that she will die by age 35 because of heart failure. She got offended lmao. I then told her she can be mad at me idgaf, if you wanna die young because of overweight, suit yourself...
@@vanjamenadzer Yeah bro, that ain't helping. Informing her regarding the benefits of getting fit would be much better. Regardless if it's her fault or not, you don't want to kick someone when they are down/in a bad place. If a person had just been through a toxic relationship and has been warned prior by many of their friends to not initiate that relationship in the first place, then it's for the friends to cheer him back up and get him back to his feet, not say 'LMFAO get fuck' and let him suffer in chronic depression. You're not considered 'tough' if you say stuff that is not necessary and may offend. You're just being an asshole.
@@vanjamenadzer Yeah, I'd be offended too. That's just a flat out dick move. The body positivity movement has a lot of toxicity and dangerous ways of thinking, but by the sound of it, so do you too. Many many obese people live well into their 60's. Claiming that someone will die at 35 without real reason is incredibly rude and incorrect.
@@bobliminal1856 I think so too. The world has always been this way, but how that way plays out I think changes as technology changes. I think the dark side of tech is the increasing amount of reach it gives toxic people. Whereas before a bad apple could spoil the bunch, now it's more a single bad apple can ruin the entire orchard.
@@woodbrettm i don’t think so, people used to just ‘get on with it’ much more, work hard, spend time with family. Now its all online photos and image that is important. Forget being skilled or a good person, just how you look these days. Sad.
I was probably the last generation to grow up as a kid without being influenced by social media. Makes me feel bad for these easily influenced children
@@vandalosalvaje9957 No age group is imune to social media driven damage. But we must prioritize those in higher risk. kids and teenagers should NOT have unsupervised access to social media.
Yup I just got instagram (I’m 14) and I only follow people who are very trust worthy, or knowledgeable like Sean, Noel or Greg doucette. And don’t follow any advice before fact checking it rigorously. And showing it to my parents who both are smart, and my dad especially because he’s a university teacher and is very critical of everything
Back in the days it was the ads on tv, the bill boards, your neighbours and so on. There was much worse diet stuff back then, many containing what we today consider poison. Society doesn’t care if you die to achieve perfection as long as you feed them your money on the way to your grave.
I recommend we watch this in our health class because of how good it is for teenagers to learn. We ended up watching it and everyone hated it because they didn't want to feel bad about their heroes. I like to think you helped plant the seed in their head though. I thank you for that
That's probably the exact reason he won't blow up. Not overly enthusiastic, not flashy enough, and the videos are way too long... (I hope I'm wrong, and I hope the videos will stay just like this)
He wont blow up with content like this, content that is the truth. People don't want the truth, people want to stay stupid and only follow the majority of people, people that are popular and famous. People watch video's with over 10 million views and not this. (no offense though)
Because social media is designed to show off what you have. And only the positive things. So you are spammed with tweets like "hey look i just bought a car, I just dropped 30 kg of weight, I bought a puppy, I got hired to this insanely well paid job". And people don't realize that, that person might only have tweeted a positive thing in their life once, but because you scroll through your feed you get spammed these messages from multiple people across the globe. So to you it seems like everyone has their life together and always get what they want, when that's just far from the truth. And the other half of the time you get all the hateful and negative comments making you dislike humanity. It's just bad for mental health overall.
The RU-vid algorithm brought your content to my attention and can I just say, thank you Josh! You've got an important message. Keep spreading the truth!
you do realise that a lot of people have hard time eating and being alive , social media and states of mind like that are the last of their problems LOL
Less than 600 subscribers. This is like a documentary. So well made and such a vital topic to discuss so we can once and for all claim our lives back instead of being fooled by these fake and dangerous lifestyles.
I love that this video unveils so many truths yet has no marketing agenda what so ever. For once I can say I watched something on youtube in this space that was worth my time. Thank you, and continue what you are doing.
Loved this. One group that I think is extra vulnerable that no one talks about is mothers. There is a lot of terrible advice and toxic imagery out there for how to recover from pregnancy and get back to a normal weight (or on the flip side, lies about how you're stuck being overweight).
imo its a really stupid thing. Hormones from pregnancy could severely develop your breasts effectively adding pounds of breast tissue only, something you cannot remove without surgery. How in the world is this diffcult to understand that having a certain weight isnt indicative of a certain status. You can be stuck being over the weight you were before the pregnancy but that doesnt mean you are fatter. It could literally be just extra development of a lot of things that add some weight. And being at the body fat percentage you were at beforehand will not put you at the same weight.
The reality is that you can make yourself look completely different very quickly. I go to the gym get pumped and flex in the mirror compared to me just standing normally in front of mirror after having lunch is just so different. This why before and after transformation photos and even videos are highly deceptive. You can look like you've made a 6 month transformation when actually its all been done within the same hour. This is why all this Instagram stuff is bad its incredibly deceptive and makes people think they're shit.
@@dl5641 we can only hope that people can stop being so gullible and stupid. The amount of trust people have in the most deceptive people and websites is absurd. For instance, the fact that people fight over which politician is the best and put political parties stickers on their car is absurd.
The part apart comparing to your mates to increase motivation has worked flawlessly for me, for the last few months I've been having friendly competition against a mate of mine with our runs and the both of us have gone from running 5kms to 20kms and constantly beating our pb's!
I worked as a personal trainer for a while, and back then it was illegal for me to write a diet as I was not a qualified Dietician and if someone became anorexic I was liable.
Unless someone can make money or get elected to office t it'll fix the problem most likely outside of a video like this until people care enough this will get worse.
Well, that is the difference. If you are registered trainer, dietician or doctor, you will be under liability of what happens to your clients. Meanwhile these cretins, who only need to install social media app and have free time to post crap, don't have.
Technically it’s still illegal. My sister is a RD and we were just talking about her frustration about patients coming in watching these videos on Instagram and screwing up their bodies.
I also recommended vids from others like cruel world happy mind, Tiffany freg, Kristen Leo who have broken down these scams and marketing tricks that many influencers who target young girls and women use. Especially when it comes to body and beauty. The more than know the less likely they are to be influence them, particularly if it's harmful to their bodies like using a grapefruit powder that "burns fat".
My daughter is 16 and is much happier than her peers. She has never had social media. I explained these things to her all her life. With her understanding, it was her own decision to not use social media. She tells me she can see so many issues with her friends are due to their social media use ( meeting strangers, poor memory, low self esteem, poor posture, no hobbies, no imagination, unreliable, apathetic... The list goes on)
Hi Josh, as someone who has purchased a program from Brittany Dawn before (I know, I shouldn't have known better 🤦🏻♀️). I really appreciate people like you who debunk all these fitness industry BS. We need more people like you who speak the truth! Not to mention, your storytelling and video production skills are INSANE (you should sell a course on this 😛). Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!
Man, I’m the nitpicker, obsessed with precision in speech and succinctness. Your approach, delivery and conclusion are impeccable. Not that my opinion matters, but I think you deserve to be acknowledged as a tremendous writer. I can’t wait for what’s next from you.
Coach Greg brought me to your "Being Healthy" video and I have binged all your videos. You make incredible content, very informative and helpful. I hope everyone gets a chance to find your videos.
Incredible production quality. You can tell when someone has “it”, and you definitely do my friend. Please keep it up; I can’t wait to see where this takes you!
This guy is beginning of the process. In 10 years influencers, fitness etc. Will be more regulated and honest. As all new industries this is fairly new and wild. Remember cigarettes ads 30 years ago and now.
@@JdotCarver very true, cigarettes were slowly going away, less ppl were smoking, and the average number of teenagers who were smoking was going down. Then someone made strawberry flavored unicorn milk vape sticks.
I could only see regulations happening in the supplement market. When you start restricting what individuals say on a public platform, that is a slippery slope.
I hope, this kind of Information will be used in our schools to make our children aware. The earlier the better! Can't wait for the next ones. Great Job Josh!
Absolutely brilliant: the topic, the content, the execution, the message. I am a dad of 4 lovely little girls. The trend you have summarized is one of my largest concern regarding to the upcoming generation.
Made amazingly well, very clear, came from Reddit and I’m impressed. It seems your videos are based around fitness, why don’t you breach into other topics as well, you are good at speaking.
Also have to add that I’ve seen the v shred adverts and there really annoying, the dude obviously knows nothing about how to guide people properly, weight loss is more simple than it seems, these extreme diets are bad, slow progression, by exercising more and eating less is the best way to lose weight.
@@brettjosh please make a video on "militant vegans" or any of the extremist in the plant-based world (e.g. Freelee, other fruititarian/lowfat "influencers")! I'm a vegan and found that space so disheartening when first starting out
I remember a quote : "on one hand, there is a need to fit in....on the other, the need to stand out...And there is us, struggling to hold it together "
everytime i diet down its always the same rules, "eat less, work out more" simple as. only thing id add is figure out what your maintenance caloric intake is (that is how many calories you need to eat to maintain your current weight) and take away 200-400 calories off of that maintenance intake. personally if i take off anymore i start to feel really shitty because im not eating enough or inversly i end up binging because im starving myself. Each person is different and loses weight or gains it differently, the idea is to experiment without falling into one of the categories talked about in this video because then you will be at risk of really hurting yourself. do your research, fallow genuine health/fitness channels who use scientific studies to back what they are saying (and not just cherry picking one obscure study when every other study says different) and listen to your body as i mentioned before when i explained why i dont go lower than 400 caloric defecit. Great video and really good way of putting things into perspective.
i cant imagine being a teenager now growing up with all this pressure. im 35 now and experienced all the social medias phases, and back then it was purely to connect with friends and new people. now its just different.. i have been off social media for years now.
I use Instagram for a minute when COVID started as I was getting depressed I was happy with my looks but I wanted to live in a big house from being a successful gamer or youtuber so I cut down how long I spend on the app check in on my friend and got of so I won’t be envious and depressed by a highlight reel
Yeah, I primarily kept only Instagram and Facebook for business/professional purposes. Rarely if ever use them to just scroll through content, but I've also added extensions that make my newsfeed blank or I just muted the posts and stories from literally everyone I follow except content I find actually useful or motivating to me. I can message a friend every once in a while if we want to stay in touch but there is just no way I can be here grinding during the pandemic seeing the millionth pic of someone's coffee and croissant at some cafe lmao
Covid made me download for the first time also, Insta full of actors with a rented life it actually made me happier knowing Im not fueling a huge debt, I only follow 10 or so real bodybuilders now
I knew the rest of this channel's content is gold after I watched the V Shred video and I'm glad I chose to stick around to see the rest. This is absolutely brilliant video production and you just earned yourself a sub, mate. You're much like James Jani, just smaller. Not for long, though - I can assure you all.
I had left social media like 5-6 years before , don't even remember that time period . I took Detoxification of my mind seriously and most importantly accepted my responsibility and reality . Being depressed is OK , it's just a feeling you need to get out by working on youself. Recently I joined IG again , for checking how much I have actually changed . I'm satisfied that I can see the exact opposite of reality and social media . Our lives are much better than ever before , it's just a simple thing " take responsibility of your mind ,soul and body , your thought process " .
Love this. It took me years and I even struggle today to focus on my own successes and to get into my OWN best shape. Focusing on the long-term than short term, while eating a balance of foods.
Really great video, Josh! I was aware of the negative effects that social media can have so I stopped using all social media many years ago, except for RU-vid. Social media is not inherently bad but, speaking for myself, I'm able to navigate RU-vid while maintaining a level head. It was much easier to fall into dangerous comparison behavior on other platforms. However, since I haven't been on other social media, I wasn't really aware of the variety of negative experiences that social media has been causing. I love that you are telling others to be wary and have balance. Great video.
Everything in this video is perfect, the assembling, the arguments, the pictures, this is instructive and well informed, + one subscriber and of course a well deserved like
Please do more of these. We need these deep diving videos on the internet. This is the type of video that I would show my kids in the future to teach them to look out for themselves. You are awesome.
there are alot of deep dive videos on the internet... This guy just makes it extremely easy to watch and he is quite entertaining. Not to mention the video quality and structure.
Mate, your videos are absolutely brilliant. Really nicely produced, great sound effects, great points and great narration! Good. Stuff. Keep em coming!
I follow a lot of Artist's Instagram and this video makes me realize they probably have similar effects. Comparing you work to theirs and getting false illusion of progress. "You don't need art schools, just follow my advice and live from your art!"
I messed up my eating routine from intermittent fasting by eating two meals a day for the past two years and I’m trying to eat breakfast again on an earlier time but, I can’t because I feel like throwing up and I’m not used to eating breakfast besides lunch and dinner. Hopefully I could eat breakfast again at 8 am. These diets are messing people up and brainwashing them into “fitness gurus” which aren’t healthy at all.
me at midnight: I'm starting to suspect that youtube is preventing me to sleep by recommending me these real good content right when I usually put my phone down to sleep. mmm
I’m on my 3rd day of deleting Instagram I feel better about myself but, every time I look in the mirror you remember how ugly you feel and all because some girl photoshopped her body and her face to an unreasonable standard. It’s horrible, sometimes I cry about it. The fact that girls bullied me at school also didn’t help. To be called fat and ugly at 5,8 and 130lbs is horrific, I was also spat on at one point. It got really sick and lost a lot of weight. If you feel like Instagram is part of the problem delete it.
Its so simple, I only get influenced by people who have the degree and the scientific proof that something is good for me. I wish more people had that way of thinking about "influencers"
I’ve been recovering from orthorexia myself. After I realized what was happening I briefly tried “intuitive eating” which has some nice principles but I nearly fell completely into the fat acceptance movement. It’s thanks, in part, to rational, caring, honest and intelligent content creators like yourself that I have finally found a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Subscribed.
This was an incredibly well made video, and also absolutely correct about the sorry state of the fitness and nutrition industries right now. Thank you for making this. 👍
Wow. 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 this needs to be shared hundreds of times over!!!! The youth of today really need to watch this or shown this in school, they are driven by social media so much now then I was growing up every kid has a phone or access to one and it’s dangerous
Watching this again, you really are one of the most grounded fitness-related content producer out there at the moment. Promoting a healthy lifestyle rather than a "get shredded quick" method is so important, and you are out there spreading a really important message. Keep fighting the good fight and I can't wait for the next video to drop in my subscriber inbox.
Thanks so much for raising our awarness and potentially saving us from the harm of having high expectations from influencers.🙏🏼💯 May all social media users will get to see this video🤞
Thank you so much, Brett. You're doing the documentaries I wish I was making for my own truth seeking and revelation global issues 😊💪🏽 So so helpful and very well researched!
Don’t compare yourself to nobody.. it’s okay to have some motivation to achieve a similar goal to a certain someone but make it your own success, you will be unique in your own little way
This video is wonderful and a must watch for everyone. All you see in the internet can be false or just a manipulated partion of what there is truly. All these Influencers, stars, etc. They feed of the social proof and the desperation and lack of education for their own gain.
I have now seen all of your 4 videos, and how are you only at 7.000 subs. This is some of the best videos I have seen on yt in a long time. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your next video. I’m stunned
I dated a fitness instagrammer once. In her photos she would be at the gym in trendy gym wear looking lean and muscular. She had thousands of followers who all looked up to her, companies sent her free gym wear and protein bars etc. But in real life she was just malnourished. The only food she had in her kitchen were the free protein samples sent to her. She was unhealthily under weight but could go to the gym in her trendy gym wear, tense her body to look lean and muscular for pictures and then post on instagram. It was all BS. I'd say she was pretty unhealthy.
This reminds me of a thing I saw about how movie stars get 'ripped' for roles, Jason mamoa, henry cavill, hugh jackman, and how unhealthy it is to maintain long-term. But also the idea that it's their only job to get this way for the role. The average person doesn't have the sheer time and resources to do that. And it's not recommended anyway
this is why ~~celebrity trainers~~ are bullshit, celebrities whose careers are dedicated towards fitting an aesthetic for certain roles are going to have the time, lifestyle, and resources to do it as a full time job. Even with that their physiques are not sustainable. PEDS are an open secret. They are not normal people so why should normal people expect to look like a celeb?
Yea flooby nailed it. The fitness industry as a whole is a scam. 95% of the supplements are useless in the first place. On top of that most don’t even have what’s on the label. And thirdly the people pushing this shit or the people in movies are in no way shape or form natural. They are all on some type of performance enhancing drugs and so there is NO WAY normal people can look the way they do no matter what supplements they take even if you are one of the very very few with the genetics to look that way you still will not look the way they do without doing major harm to your body with drugs and horrible diets that are not sustainable in any way. I work out A LOT. I’m natural. I research everything I do and take. I’m not an expert by any means but I’m speaking the truth here.
Loved this. I am a marketer by trade so I understand the monetisation of lack, but now we have regular people driving that state of lack globally, creating problems that don't really exist, then creating movements and solutions that are unnecessary since the problem shouldn't exist in the first place. Just like they're now fining news outlets for spreading misinformation, they should be doing so for influencers with a much heavier hand.
I think the only Awnser to this issue especially those with image issues/insecurity is to get off social media. If you are not in a place you want to be and seeing all these motivated fitness instructors having success, it’s probably for the best to not be on these platforms that are not realistic to reality. Been off social media and I can honestly say I’m so glad I got off it!
Im relatively young, but often treated like a fossil for not having a variety of socials, i feel like its a massive waste of time. Shakespeare quote wraps it up perfectly. Amazing video, thank you!
I was the same way. I had a Facebook, but was never on it and didn't get a smart phone until college for email and still don't have what I would call a proper social media
