Dear people telling Lesley that she is hot or not or to sing better, she is already dead, have some respect!!! And if anything she was a great singer! RIP Lesley Gore
That " don't you dare put me on display" gives me the goosebumps! So fierce!!! Gives me the strength to leave my abusive parents behind without feeling guilty about it .
Hola Mini...tome aliento tu corazón 💞 no tengas miedo , el cielo sólo los valientes lo arrebatan.... !!! Ánimo preciosa hay más que ganar y poco a perder !!! Sólo se vive una vez !!!!
@Mini Kaur - Just do it. Make your own life! My parents tried to stop me doing what I wanted with my life. I hesitated for a while, but finally at 18 I went my own way and made a great career and a great life, with no regrets. I'm 72 now - believe me, the years fly by so quickly - you only get one life. And it's YOUR life - nobody else's. Good luck!!!
She was born in 1946 so is only 42 in this video, not over 50. She was discovered when she was 16 by Quincy Jones. She is and was always amazing. RIP Lesley your voice and this song impacted me as a young girl and has always been a favourite of mine.
How brave and bold for the young girl she was when she first sang this song to put such statements before everybody's nose. So fierce, so great. We will never forget her.
ms. will always love my life , Johnny Depp was a great actor, but has so much money it's gotten to his brain..... now he's just fake, everything's for the camera now .........
You're right, Leslie's voice did get better with age, and she still looked great in this clip. Sadly, she passed away several years ago, I forgot what year exactly. Loved her songs when I heard them on the radio as a teenager.
love how much more powerful her voice and demeanor were here compared to her 1964 live performance. she wasn't afraid to take up space, she didn't say "please" at "when i go out with you." she wasn't asking, she was DEMANDING. now in her 40s, she proudly asserted that she was still young and free and unburdened by men's expectations of how women should behave, a wonderful message considering how society thinks women should have "settled down" and moved on from their "rebellious phase" already by that age. because she was a lesbian, this song wasn't just the complaints of a girlfriend for her oppressive boyfriend, but an anthem for women overall againt sexism and societal expectations. what an incredible lady and a pop classic 💕
@@jamesmaillet9354 does civilization mean shaming peolpe about their beliefs and shutting them down when they try to express their opinion??? Mister just for your information Lesley gore was indeed a feminist. In an interview she actually said that she wanted to empower women to actually stand up for them self and not depend on a man if it doesn't feel right, just because society wants them to. I don't care is you are an anti of or this movement or just dislike them, but come here and preach about how much you don't like people talking about movements such as feminism, blm etc. Especially under a video about a woman who also supported feminism and contribute to it.
@@nextandimnotevengonnasaythanks I appreciate your message, and read it word for word and I agree.I wish I could take back my initial ignorant comment but I'll keep that post up to remind me of my own ignorance and will definitely look myself in the mirror each day and wish I never thought,or sent such a message.Be well ok and be safe..and thank you sincerely for making me see my wrongs with my idiotic thoughts

I love the way she sings this songs in this video, compared to the way she sang it in 1964. Twenty four years latter, she sings it like a woman with experience and not wanting a man to be in charge of her life. Very powerful! Thank you Lesley Gore!
@@Shadow-zf5uc yes we all know she was a lesbian. I don't know why you felt the need to bring that up. The difference back then and yes I've met a lot of older gay and lesbian people is back then people didn't want to be defined by their sexuality. It was just a part of them. It didn't make them everything they were as opposed to today's generation when that's all they have.
As a teen, I grew up buying Lesley Gore 45's, (no such thing as u-tube or CD's). I wasn't aware of a gay person. When I first heard Lesley Gore's songs I had to have all of them. To this day I sing along whenever I hear her songs being played. What a voice! She left our world far too soon. She is one of those angels singing now.
She sang several hit songs but back in the 60's performers did not make the money like they do now. She died with only $50K to her name. This song resonates to how I feel at 68 years old and being single.
I am fortunate to have all her hits on 45's. Never, really appreciated her back then. God, I do now! This lady was beautiful and fantastic. I miss you sweet lady. RIP
i’ve been rewatching this performance for years and i will never get sick of it. her fierce passion literally moves me to tears when i watch her sometimes idk. rest in piece beautiful lesley gore ❤
It's a shame she died so young. Phenomenally beautiful woman with a uniquely beautiful voice. I remember my mother enjoying this song on American Bandstand when I was a little child.
She builds and builds and builds until the climax. Leslie's voice was always strong, but her attitude developed a grit and determination that is absolutely riveting here.
I was 6 years old when this came out and grew up with it. It changed the views of a lot of people, men and women both. I remember my Mom, when referred to as a housewife, saying that she didn't marry a house. My sibs and I grew up with this view.
Remember when it first came out. It was the first song by a girl that showed strength and self-determination! It really was the theme of the feminist movement to come: "You don't own me." God bless her, she was way ahead of her time!
I love how the song keeps changing key several times, building up in momentum, and Lesley's voice becomes more and more glorious as it progresses. Amazing. Better than the original version.
Welp, some of us still find a great many things about the original version that were better. It was more poignant with less melodrama. Also, it would be amazing if she still appeared with the original 60's hairdo!
I've never done this before: revisit this video to reiterate what I said the first time. So I watched this again, paying careful attention to her phrasing and keys throughout. And come to the same conclusion, that this version really pales in many creative and musical ways compared to her original version. I realize she is much older and perhaps trying to perform it in a new or updated way. But, seriously, nothing about it even comes close to the power of the original. I find this version rather annoying and quite "stagey". Like she's in a musical instead of performing a brilliantly written hit song.
This made the hairs on the back of my neck stand out. She nailed it - anyone watching this and wondering is she gonna make it I can only say the answer is yes in Spades. An incredible performance Lesley , loved every second. RIP my love.
I first saw this as a young man when it originally aired back in 1988 and it stuck with me all of these years, such an emotional and beautiful performance. I'm so happy that others are getting to see it now and are still being touched by it. I can only imagine how happy it would have made her to read all of the nice comments here. Thanks, everybody. :)
@@MindyMatijasevic girl, yes! Everything is forever. And there's no such thing as time. That's Einstein. So only thing left is to prove our souls live on separate from our bodies. Well...why would we even have that thought if it's not a possibility? ❤❤❤
Thank you for posting. I too remember this from 88, I was 18, and it started my drive to not only her, but a several year obsession with early 60's music, very cool
I love how she started out all soft and then became liberated and started really getting into it I felt her power! She still sang this song amazing and she will be missed but always a legend!
Crap was she ever hot!! Great songs, smart, gorgeous. And waay ahead of her time instilling an attitude in women that they COULD be, and do anything they wanted. Rip Leslie, it was a privilege that you were with us for awile.
I went to sleep with her albums stacked on my record player. She was one of my favorites, along with Dusty Springfield. Love this live version. Record companies used to make their artists do a more generic version for sale. But here you can see the true power of her voice. Thanks for sharing as I’d never seen this performance.
UGH!! I'm an emotional WRECK after hearing her sing this!! Especially as we are going into Pride month. This song in so many ways was her 'coming out' song but at the time nobody knew it. Her interpretation coupled with those affirming lyrics has me flooded with tears and now know WHY as a child this song left its mark on me after all these years. It kicked up my own personal activism and self discovery though Stonewall wouldn't happen until 1970 and the meaning of that was tone deaf to me until I became a young adult. Lesley awakened the activists within us all regardless of gender with this song. Unforgettable
As a heterosexual woman that knows the culture & times of the 60s & that she was only 17, I personally believe she had to date boys & this was her reaction to all that crap that boys give girls, including men give women. That's why this song has been applied to failed relationship shows like the first wives club. Since the dawn of time Men have been possessive & oppressive & women have strived to be free of all that. Her being homosexual & pretty it probably really affected her when boys that she didn't like to kiss told her that her lips belonged to him she better not kiss anyone else. I get freaked out by that crap & I like kissing men.
I was was born in 1968 and grew up listening to 50s and 60s music Lesley Gore was my favorite female singer by far!!!! Her voice was magnificent to bad we lost her to cancer when she was 68 she was still young!!! RIP Lesley
i've finally found this. it's incredible! Grace sounds great! but in this video i guess Leslie is more than 50 tears old, and when she sings "i'm young and i love to be young" - that broke my heart! what a life-power! god bless!!
I didnt know leslie Gore passed away few years back 🕯️❤️. This has got to go down as one of her greatest live performances OMG she was exceptional. She sung that even better than when she first sung when young. Got shivers when she got half way into. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 she certainly deserved the standing ovation she received for that👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
She brings tears to my eyes this rendition of the song is more powerful and More beautiful than she did when she sing it in the '60s what a powerhouse what a beautiful woman a beautiful cell rest in peace Leslie we will miss you but your legend and your music lives on I love it ❤️
Leslie was one of the great teenage girl singers, but she wasn't a songwriter. Ironically, this song was written by men, as was, "It's My Party". Check Wikipedia.
Up until the break, she was fabulous, at the break and through the rest of the song, she flat out OWNED her song. Never seen a performance like this. Goosebumps.
I'm listening to this on the first day of Spring in North America (March 19th, 2020) and in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. It's a depressing time but this song sung by this gorgeous and talented lady makes me feel so much better...and hopeful. 💯RIP
Immer noch so cool. Ich bin 61 und hab's erst vor 3 Jahren entdeckt, war sofort verliebt in die Originalversion. Da sieht sie aus wie meine Tante. Die ist jetzt gut 70.
Alicia Stanul There are good singers. Some are better than the old ones. Just got to look Support them please the majority are not mainstream and singing crap.
I agree with you Alicia. That was the best music. All those songs from back then all had a meaning to them. When I use to disc jockey back in the early 70s I use to play all that doo wop music more than anything else
Leslie did absolutely amazing on this song!.. She meant every word and you can feel it!.. Her back ground singers sound beautiful too the harmony is on point!.. I keep watching it over & over.
This song is my favorite. My daughter and I sing and strut around while dramatically playing it up for fun. I have loved this song forever. Thank you. Brings back good memories 😊☮️💋💜
Always value your freedom and peace of mind. If someone genuinely loves and values you, you wouldn’t feel oppressed around them. If you’re a decent enough person, but your partner criticizes you all the time and wants to control you, then don’t stay in that relationship. We have one life to live.
it`s mind blowing that someone can perform a song that Lesley has been singing for at least 30 years!!! more than likely, maybe thousands of times!!! and STILL sing and perform with all that passion!!!! this is an outstanding performance!!!
Absolutely FABULOUS performance by Lesley Gore, may she rest in peace. She was such a twinkling star in that era. The icing on the cake for me was to see Jeff Porcaro (R.I.P.), one of the very best drummers to walk this earth, in her backup band.
This is absolutely her BEST performance of this song...ever! What a wonderful, talented, and beautiful person she was. I miss her being in this world. It's just not been the same without her. Rest in peace, dear one.
