Resetting the camera will probably do it, but I make sure that there's no copyright settings for someone else in the camera settings before even trying it out. You never know what you may produce an image of, and you want to make sure that image is only yours. I buy a lot of used equipment, and this is very important.

Resetting a pre-owned camera is always a good idea.. I have a friend that didn't realize there was a copyright tag of the previous owner still being written to photos. That went on for a year. =)

Hi Leigh, the main thing I do with a new camera is to fit a screen protector ( to keep the weather out ) but as you stressed I too try to build that "Muscle memory" you mentioned, to offload that level of thinking and then be able to concentrate on the photo I want to capture, not be stuck in trying to figure out " is that dial A, button B" etc. Also as you'll undoubtedly know, the more you can get into "muscle memory", the greater is the ability to react to that "perfect moment" quickly.

Shutter count. Even on brand new cameras, I checked the shutter count. You may have received a camera that was purchased and then returned. That’s not supposed to happen but sometimes it does. By checking the shutter count, you may see, “oh my brand new camera had 150 pictures taken on it, I guess it’s not so brand new”. Why was it returned? Is it defective and accidentally put back on the shelf?

When I purchase a camera I always obtain an aftermarket manual. I find that the "people" speak in these manuals is much easier to understand than the "tech" speak in manufacturers guides.

When I order a new camera, first thing I do is download the manual and read it while I'm waiting for it to arrive. this makes the wait time go faster.

Very nice. Always good to get a reminder on camera settings, even if it's a camera I've had for a while.

As someone who just got a Nikon D780 (which is not new, but it's new to me!), this video was extremely useful! Thanks!

Hey Leigh... I really like your videos, you do a good job in explaining the basics in a way that's easy to understand. As for something that I like to do, for me it's carry the new camera around for an hour on a walk even if I don't take any photos just to get a feel for it, and try just about everything. I like your idea of just taking photos around the house, I would suggest taking the same photo with your existing camera and comparing the differences.

When I get a new camera (new or used), I'll take time to inspect the sensor and take test photos for any spots. There's nothing more frustrating than taking photos and noticing a consistent spot in the photos.

Thank-you for reminding me to read the manual. :D I am fortunate to have other friends/photographers that have the same camera. If I have questions, they are able to help out, go over things, and even set up my camera. The camera store are always friendly and helpful too. But I do not stop there. There are so many RU-vid, FaceBook, and other media that you can follow to learn how to use the camera. I try to learn everything about the camera, there are so many different setting you can use, and so many ways you can "take" a picture. I apply everything that I know at that moment so I am able to use and master it to my style of photography. Now that I think I know everything, I should take a look at the manual. ;D

Hi Leigh, The first thing I do after getting a new camera is to test all it's hardware and software features within the one week of initial warranty guarantee time period where it is free to return the camera body and get new packed if found issues without any questions. Tests include : 1. Charge the full battery and discharge 5 times within camera to ensure the battery charges properly, battery properly holds the charge and doesn't discharge quickly without and with IBIS involved. 2. If buying new camera with two cards slots then I do check with new set of specific cards they both work equally together with video first and then with photos. Generally, when both cards are near to fill they show file corruptions. I also perform this test 5 times before using with any client project. 3. When using EVF I set the diopter settings according to my eyes with glasses on. If camera has EVF refresh rate adjustment setting feature. Then changing the refresh rate for high video frame rates sometimes the EVF live image becomes soft but diopter was set to my eyes. So, EVF refresh rate changing with diopter adjustment is the very first setting I'll do.

Great tips Leigh! I feel good that I do most of what you've suggested...except read the manual 😅 I watch RU-vid walkthroughs though...that sort of counts, right?

My process is inspect the body, clean the body, install screen protector, inspect the sensor, clean the sensor if needed, charge batteries, format new SD cards, install peak design strap mounts, install a hot shoe rubber cover with integrated level, go outside and take some test shots with my favorite lens, edit test shots in Lightroom, be happy with my purchase and hope I don’t feel the desire to not buy a new camera for a while and cure my GAS 😂 I have a Like New condition Lumix S1R coming in soon and I’ll hopefully be selling off the rest of my gear and cameras (except for my 2 Leica M cameras and their lenses) and hopefully be looking at making around $5k from selling all the gear I’ll be getting rid of. Then buy a Lumix 24-105 f/4 so I can have a versatile zoom lens for the S1R and be happy with my 3 camera collection for a while. I’m really hoping to curing my GAS and making a extra money in the process *fingers crossed* 🤣

Leigh, Question: is the S5 II your camera of choice today? I am trying to decide between an S5 II and Zf. No camera store in Tucson (or Tempe Camera) have the S5 II, so I am not able to get one in hand. Great reminder regarding lens mounts as Nikon is different from all others (on CCW vs on CW). Have a wonderful holiday!!

I think that while it's not the most "ideal" step for most people, reading the first few chapters of the manual is important. At least basic operation and initial steps. I would consider that to be STEP 1. Step 3 (after familiarizing yourself with the camera) go into the menu and turn off the Auto Focus confirmation beep. That has to be turned off before you leave the house. I know beginners may like using it because it's an audible confirmation, but learn what the AF point looks like when focus is confirmed and use that instead (for example on Nikon Z mirrorless, the AF box turns green -- from red -- when focus is locked in Single point AF mode. Fellow photographers will thank you for disabling the distracting AF beep. I would say after that, learn how to format cards in the camera. Ideally you should read the entire manual (or at least the parts that you will be using, such as stills photography) and perhaps skip areas you will not be using (such as video features if you don't shoot video), but familiarize yourself with the camera and its menu system first. As a few initial steps, and especially true for new "used"/refurbished cameras... do a factory reset on them. Sometimes people set things in a strange way that may make the camera act differently than it would out of the box (new). This is just a habit I've gotten into doing, even with brand new cameras. Updating the firmware is also important, but not always necessary to get things going, but recommended.
