In today’s diet-focused world, bread gets a bad reputation. In a lot of popular meal plans focused on health and weight loss, carbohydrate-heavy foods such as bread are usually the first thing to go. But not all types of bread are created equal: while processed white bread isn’t exactly a superfood, there are other types of bread that could potentially provide a little more in terms of nutritional value.
So which types of bread should you keep an eye out for on your next trip to the grocery store? Today, Bestie is going to take a closer look at some of the healthier varieties of bread you can choose from.

Summary:
1. Whole Wheat Bread
When it comes to bread, the two types that most shoppers are likely to be familiar with are white and whole wheat bread. Of these two, bread that is 100 percent whole wheat is considerably healthier. Unlike processed white bread, whole grain bread keeps the entire grain intact during the manufacturing process, leaving in various bits such as the germ, endosperm and bran. By leaving in these parts of the grain, whole wheat bread contains a much higher value of nutritional content than if it were to be removed; in addition to having a higher concentration of fiber, the bran and germ of the grain are also a beneficial source of other nutrients such as protein and fat, along with various other vitamins and minerals. By contrast, the refined grains used in white bread do away with many of these important nutrients by removing the bran and germ during the bread’s creation. In addition to these added nutritional benefits, whole wheat bread may also help protect your body against certain types of health complications such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even certain varieties of cancer. However, you shouldn’t just settle for the first loaf of bread you see on the store shelf with “whole wheat” on the label: many manufacturers are inclined to simply slap the words “whole wheat” on the label in order to make their product appear healthier, regardless of whether or not the bread itself was actually made without refined flour.
2. Sprouted Grain
Like whole wheat bread, sprouted bread is made with whole grains as a key ingredient as opposed to refined grains or flour. The key difference is that, as the name implies, sprouted grain bread is made from whole grains that have begun to germinate, by which we mean the grains have begun sprouting.
3. Sourdough
Sourdough is a type of bread made through a special process that involves the fermentation of naturally occurring yeast and bacteria that allows the bread to rise. This process of fermentation is also noteworthy in that it plays a significant role in reducing the phytate content of the bread by as much of 50 percent, compared to other types of bread that are created through more conventional techniques.
4. Oat Bread
As evidenced by the name, oat bread is, surprise surprise, bread made using oats as a primary ingredient. In addition to oats, oat bread is also made with natural ingredients such as whole wheat flour, yeast, and water, which, if you’ve been following this list so far, is a good sign in terms of potential health benefits. In addition to using whole wheat instead of refined or processed flour, the oats found in oat bread are associated with a number of additional health benefits, including magnesium, vitamin B1, iron, and zinc. Oats are also a major source of fiber, specifically a type of fiber known as beta-glucan. Beta-glucan is believed to help lower your body’s cholesterol levels, as well as keep your blood sugar at manageable levels.
5. Flax Bread
Flax bread is a type of bread made using a combination of whole-grain flours as well as flax seeds. I guess most of these names are pretty on the nose, huh? Moving on, flax seeds are an incredibly nutritious addition to any meal plan, which means that, by extension, flax seed is probably one of the healthiest bread options you can choose from. For starters, flax seeds are an especially rich source of alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, which is an omega-3 fatty acid that some studies suggest may reduce the risk of heart disease with regular intake.

Fortunately my mother taught me to make bread a little over sixty years ago. Whole grains and sourdough were an important part of feeding the family in a healthy manner. I started baking sourdough all rye bread after talking to a Prussian neighbor. That was about fourteen years ago, and I am still at it. About 12# per batch, all mixed by hand. That burns a few calories. Toasted with crunchy natural peanut butter. YUMM!

Being a type 2 diabetic, I am very health conscious. I primarily eat a keto style diet, but eliminating carbs altogether doesn’t make me feel great. I do like an organic multi grain bread that I buy at Costco. My carbs still stay below 30gr per day. I totally lose my energy without any grains, but choosing them wisely is key. Many of the keto or carnivore “Docs” on RU-vid do not have type 2 diabetes, but opine on the subject all the time. If a person doesn’t have type 2 diabetes, it’s virtually impossible to know how a diabetic feels physically. I have done virtually zero carb, but that is NOT the answer. 1 Slice of organic multi grain bread at breakfast with eggs and bacon is perfect as the only time I’ll have this bread and that’s after a 15 hour fast.

I’ve recently got into sourdough bread and I love it so much! That and 100% Whole Wheat or Whole Grain bread are always in stock in my kitchen! Haven’t eaten regular white bread in almost a year!

Excellent video and so well explained. I love bread and pita bread and always buy sourdough and sprouted grain bread. My homemade pita consists of unbleached organic flour, ground black chia, ground flax, and physilium husk and it's delicious. Should I be adding bran or whole wheat flour to the mix? I love bread, I grew up on bread. But as you get older, you can’t eat what you use to eating. This video gave me a new informed outlook on bread. Liked and benefited from the video. Thank you. I like slow rise whole wheat sourdough with a little oats and ground flax. Egg wash with sesame or pumpkin seeds. My wife doesn’t like it so I make her potato bread and sneak in a little soy flour.

I have my own grain mill and buy organic wheat from a local distributor. She searches out which farms in Canada are producing high quality wheat and sells it at wholesale to those of us who make our own bread. Because I mill it right before making it, the bread is loaded with nutrients and as fresh as you can get. Bread on store shelves does have germ removed as it goes rancid fairly quickly. However, I appreciate this video because bread and in particular gluten have gotten an unfair bad wrap the past few years. Yay for great bread!

I make my own bread using 50% wholegrain dark rye flour, 25% wholegrain spelt flour and 25% wholegrain wholemeal flour. Tastes much better to me than any bought bread and I know what goes into it.

The molasses is good for your bones, protein, manganese, calcium potassium vitamin B6, and copper. I don't feel like getting up right now, but if the oil is olive oil then it is a bonus. I am not putting down Ezekiel bread because I do eat it some times, but because it is frozen and refrigerated it has a tendency to spoil.

This video about bread was certainly very useful. Too many people still don't read the labels but buy the bread that "looks the best". In the aftetmath of WW2 for a white loaf one had to stand in line for hours ! Today, or rather since many years already I eat only whole wheat bread.

I used to eat 100% whole wheat bread all of the time. And I think that was one of the reasons why I gain so much weight. I cut the bread out and I lost the weight. I love bread but I don't eat it all that much anymore. Only because I want to lose weight not gain weight.

Heyyy Bestie! I love following you & definitely love your videos. This one however is not bad but the key 🔑 ingredient to look for in healthy breads is whole grain!! I see a dietitian & this is what was drilled in me from day 1 not to mention I am also pre-diabetic. There is a big difference between whole wheat & whole grain...also in taste too! Recently we were advised to watch on our 9 year old son diet, owing to his increasing weight. As you said bread was the first thing to be removed from his diet. But with this info, really we dont have to remove bread but employ healthier bread options...i choose to make my self as thats the only way i will be sure on the ingredients. Thank you for this video

I use Dave's " killer Bread 60 calories with 21 whole grains and seeds. It is also non GMO, organic $4.50 a loaf

I struggled to like Ezekiel bread UNTIL I discovered Dave's KILLER Bread. It is very healthy but imho more palatable. They make 3 different kinds. I like Dave's Organic (whole wheat) PowerSeed. It has many different seeds.. flax, sunflower, pumpkin, & sesame. It is just a little less "stoic" than Ezekial. It is sweetened only with organic fruit juice.

Faith Rada Thanks for the info.always thought the sweetness in Davies was a sugar to help the taste ,one looks at Ezekiel sprouted grain and it is just Loaded with seeds and stuff,$$$ pricey I stick with E.sesame,but will now try Dave's at Costco's price,one can't beat it,Thanks

I adore sour dough bread really I do. Now my bread of choice, I'm diabetic & I also like a good sandwich on sour dough bread. So now I will use guacamole on it!!! Thank you so very much. 👍😃👍

Didn’t hear any mention of dousing wheat with roundup, where’s that fit in our daily nutritional requirements 🤷‍♂️ What about organic, that’s gotta be better! I vote, organic spelt sourdough 🙂👍👍

This is an exceptional video for those who love bread. I don’t eat bread anymore unless I’m in a restaurant and I splurge with a bread basket once in a blue moon. I lost my desire for bread by eliminating it. First I was obsessed with Ezekiel for a couple of years and then I just stopped completely. I’m not vegan or paleo or keto etc. I’m just an average woman who was told by her cardiologist to cut carbs for heart health and weight loss. It has worked wonders for me. I’m so much lighter in my step. I don’t need bread anymore. Lost weight. But for those who truly love bread this video offers the best advice! (My greatest concern was how can I eat eggs with no bread? I panicked lol. Now I enjoy a hearty 2 egg breakfast with no bread but with chicken bacon or chicken sausage. And organic cheeses. It’s delicious and very filling. Don’t miss bread at all!)
