This chain of replies is weird, it’s all one person commenting on themselves from different accounts to self promo their music(check their comment history if on mobile - click the name/icon - they all reply to the same thing and talk about the same thing). You aren’t sneaky.

@@jolenehoneycutt2973 No. Just that the people we loved growing up became irrelevant to us once we hit adolescence. Or, at least for me, once I hit high school. So, they no longer encompass our minds and we eventually almost forget they even existed. Hence, losing relevance.

I always think marzia is such a key case to look at. She never wanted a channel or dreamed of a RU-vid career instead it was expected due to being the girlfriend of pewdipie, even having her channel named marziapie originally. She eventually left RU-vid all together, not due to a lack of success but because she understood it was never her dream and wanted to pursue other things. I think it was incredibly brave and a great example of someone leaving despite still having massive success, good income and a lack of drama.

Little thing (cause I'm annoying): Her original channel name was Cutiepie, which was a nickname that Pewdiepie subscribers had for her before knowing her name. Then it Became Cutiepie Marzia

Marzia and PewDiePie are so interesting youtube wise- Marzia feeling like she HAD to start a RU-vid channel just because she was the girlfriend of PewDiePie and the man himself, PewDiePie who is what you would call a youtube OG, and one of those few rare cases of an OG youtuber surviving and bringing in more success over the years instead like most, going on a slow downward spiral into what we would call irrelevancy. And the way he was able to adapt his content towards his audience + the diversity in age in his audience which I find really interesting since most people have a target audience with age.

Definitely feel people avoid talking about him and his success at staying relevant and diversifying his content and thats a real shame. Would love an Internet analysis on his content

One thing I've learned about myself working in a 9 - 5 is that I thrive in stability and enjoy a traditional office setting. I see so much "boss babe" and hustle culture rhetoric that makes working a 9 -5 seem like a bad thing when it doesn't have to be. Some people want to be entrepreneurs and be their own boss, others want an office job that gives a predictable workload and hours. Neither is bad, but right now people are really shitting on people who are working a 9 -5 and don't have a side hustle they're trying to make their primary source of income

I completely agree. So many people will bash you and call you a sheep, but maybe some people really want to work in, and are passionate about, careers like finance, accounting, pharmacy etc where you likely have to work a 9-5 since that’s where the jobs are. Not everyone needs to be an “entrepreneur”, and most entrepreneurs aren’t contributing anything that significant or groundbreaking anyway.

Same! I need structure and not all corporate jobs are life-sucking. I work in government, so I’m actually helping the public with what I do. But even outside of government, there are plenty of cubicle warriors who do great things.

Crazy how Jenna Marbles was still so loved and relevant after all her years on RU-vid. She was an OG! She totally restyled her content and still did pretty well, millions of views per video. You don’t see that often. What a legend. I miss her 😭

Shane Dawson was also very good at staying relevant and going through different phases of content, before his latest big drama. Pewdipie while no longer on top, has also remained relevant on utube. It is funny how we have reached the point of RU-vid history where some channels with 1 million+ subscribers struggle to even get 50k views on a video.

I’ve noticed this thing with singers and actors too. They’ll hit a peak and then due to just the passing of time or other factors they’ll kinda loose relevancey then they go on to either still keep putting out music or show up on tv and people are like “why are they still trying to be relevant they need to go” like??? Just because a person isn’t as relevant as they used to be dosnt mean they should give up something they truely love doing and as long as their still able to support themselves then simply quitting their job because there not as popular is just stupid to me

I've always suspected that Jenna Marble's departure from youtube was partially due to her feeling done with the platform or bored with her content. This way, her exit was more "graceful" than if she had fought through the controversy only to leave 6 months later anyways. She found herself at a natural stopping point and, though ending on a low note, took advantage of it.

Yes, absolutely! Anytime I see people saying they wish she’d come back (which is often), I fight the urge to tell them that Jenna probably doesn’t even WANT to come back. She was ashamed of her past mistakes, yes, but she had also outgrown the platform and wanted her privacy back. And she was smart enough to see her controversies as an opportunity to reset.

I love it when my old faves settle into their core audience and the hate calms down or pretty much disappears from their comment sections and they just find their happy place away from the popularity contest of social media. I feel that way about Grace Helbig. She doesn't get nearly the same amount of views that she did years ago, but her community feels so much more welcoming and comfortable now.

i feel like there's also a LOT of creators that started as a "i'm just like you" type of personality, and as they blew up, they tried to "maintain" this relatability. and obviously, it's quite hard to relate to someone who now lives in a mansion and orders take out 3x per day when you're living in a one bedroom apartment, struggling to make ends meet. I think that's probably the one type of video that a creator cannot get away with maintaining forever...

Loved this, as usual! Christine and Ben from SimplyNailogical have spoken on their podcast a few times about why they still have full time jobs despite being really successful on RU-vid. They also speak about how important study/university can be. I think having something like work or study outside of RU-vid keeps your mind from being absorbed by the metrics

Whenever I have a "low performing" video I have to remind myself that RU-vid is not like other social media platforms. With Instagram or Twitter your post will get most of it's engagement in the first few days then it will be lost in void. With RU-vid a video that was posted 4 months ago or even 4 years ago is easily found through a simple search. So even if a video gets low views in the first week it may still end up being my best video in a couple months. As a small creator I'm not making videos for my job so that stress isn't on my shoulders so I can distance myself from the views easier than a full-time RU-vidr

Absolutely agree! The fact that my older videos can be found by people when they need them, even if it's years after they were initially created, is what I consider the beauty of RU-vid! But I also agree that it's easier not to stress about analytics so much when RU-vid isn't your main (or only) source of income 😊

Yeah, like I kind of like the idea of having a small RU-vid channel that brings in a just a little bit of extra spending money. But I think I would HATE having a very "successful" RU-vid channel. I do not want strangers to be discussing me or recognizing me or whatever. It's too much.

@@thatjillgirl I share similar sentiments! I don't shun success, but privacy is very much a gift. That's why, if I were to pursue YT, ideally I would want to be one of those channels that create video essays or in a similar format. For example, the channel 'Oversimplified.' Great videos, amazing number of views per video, but they never have to show their face. It's brilliant!

I grew my channel doing reaction videos, when I made original content I didn’t get even close to as many views as I would doing a reaction video. I felt like I grew an audience that didn’t really like me, for me and it was hard to process. I still get comments about having a dying/irrelevant channel and it used to bother me but not many people actually put themselves out there to fail. I just try to ride the waves now, and enjoy it while it’s happening.

Idk if this will make you feel better as I dont watch ur vids but a pov from a consumer of a lot of reactionary content. It's not the original content I find funny. I watch reactions as I want to see the creator react to some balls to the walls content. To me, reactionary content makes a boring tv show funny, I'm there for the reactions and the person, not just for the original content. So they dont dislike you, it's likely that they just prefer the way you bounce off something that's already there. To me those kind of videos are just more charismatic than someone just alone in their bedroom. I would almost describe the OC as a comedic lubricant, to help bring out the funniest version of you

I don't know how long ago you started doing more original content, but it could just be that the viewers who enjoy that stuff haven't found you yet, and all your current subscribers are the ones who love reaction videos. Like maybe it will just take time for the right viewers to find you, because in a way, you're almost starting from the beginning again. So in that sense, it wouldn't make sense to compare your channel now with how it was before, you should think of your channel as if it were a completely new channel.

This reminds me of glitterforever17. she went from making videos for teen girls like DIYs and funny videos about school, to making weird videos about period life hacks, to faking a mental illness, to finally admiting that she was broke and had no money left. She explained that when the views started going down she made those weird life hacks videos and then started faking emotional breakdown on live (she made 10k$ with this lives) to finally having to admit she was broke and had been doing what she did for atention. She was then evicted from her house. I feel bad for her but it's also an interesting way to see how losing your fame may affect you.

I’m glad you mentioned the lack financial literacy that many creators have, especially when you began making an incredibly high income within weeks, months, or even days. It can be incredibly jarring and I wish RU-vid offered more support for lower-income/younger creators on budgeting + financial longevity. Interesting comparison while watching: Burlesque dancers of the 40s and 50s actually ended up in the similar financial situation (around 12:44). They spent the money they had to display the veneer of the lifestyle (furs, gowns, jewelry, shoes, cars they didn't know how to drive) and many of them are destitute now. Burlesque as a desired performance medium was edged out by go-go dancers and later strip clubs and the performers didn't plan for the future.

Similar issues with pelota/jai alai in places like Miami. The sport still has massive popularity in Basque Country but the issue is in the US it was pretty much only big with Cubans of Basque ancestry and Mafiosi. The kids of the defectors Americanized and didn't give much care for pelota, but the issue was the Mafiosi flooded the sport with money to be laundered and because the mobsters loved to party down in Miami, everyone wanted to be around them so you'd have halls of ten thousand fans watching and gambling. Now the halls are empty even before Covid with maybe a hundred gamblers in there as the mobsters were arrested.

I literally cheered when you brought up Charlie McDonnell. He was the entire reason I got into watching youtubers, and I feel like no one remembers him which makes me feel ancient. But he’s such a great example of a creator who was open about their mental health and leaving the platform before it was a common thing to talk about. I had a hand on trying to live off being a Twitter artist. I quit my 9-5 and did a lot of commissions and had decent number of followers and engagement. But I never expected it to impact my ego and mental health so badly. You see it with how art youtubers would start beefs with each other to keep their relevance and how the internet can be incredibly hostile to the extreme. Eventually I went back to a 9-5 as a designer and I realized that a structured environment is where I thrive. The hustle and grind being an internet person is really not for everyone, you need a lot of mental fortitude to navigate that world.

this!! so much. omg i tried to do the online artist thing via Instagram, had a pretty solid following and fan base, but it absolutely killed my drive to do any type of art whatsoever. i ended up having to leave the account and move to a new one because i would get so much anxiety even looking at it. especially since i had this mentality that i had to keep posting “new” and “fresh” ideas all the time- it became more of a chore rather than something i enjoyed doing. i love making art and i am extremely passionate about it so losing that part of me, for a period of time, was very devastating. so you’re absolutely right that that kind of hustle and grind is not for everyone. all in all though, i’m happy to have my drive back with being creative again 💞💞

Usually when you see a lot of young people wanting to get into these (for lack of a better term) overnight fame and success careers, like influencing, singing, modelling etc, it’s usually sign that they don’t have many job prospects and opportunities EDIT: I mean that that lack of prospects is indicative of a society/economy that doesn’t offer much hope for the future, not that the individuals themselves are hopeless

Their channel is called Vlogbrothers, but you might know them from Crash Course and Sci Show (their educational channels) or from their books (John wrote The Fault In Our Stars, and others; Hank wrote An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor). They've been on RU-vid since 2007 and have worked on a lot of projects (eg: they founded VidCon), so their insights when it comes to internet and RU-vid things are very interesting.

But there will be bad days, like days I feel unworthy of being a nurse cause there are ppl who are smarter, more compassionate, etc. Then I changed my perspective and realized that a nurse is not all that I am. I’m good at being a nurse but I’m also a good artist, a good daughter, and a good friend. It made me feel better about myself knowing that I was affecting other people’s lives in a positive way that wasn’t just linked to my current occupation as a nurse.

I can respect Bunny not trying to change her content and self to 'stay relevant' and 'please the audience'. She obvs started the channel for her, and to connect with people like her, and it just unexpectedly took off and became hugely popular. But now ppl have moved on, but she still is the same, and hopefully can now continue to enjoy making videos the same way she did before becoming very mainstream popular. She's certainty made enough money, and obvs has lots of side hobbies, so for sure just ticking over with the amount of views she gets is enough, funds wise.

I remember Bunny getting so anxious that her numbers dropped, a few years back. It was bad and you could tell she was struggling. While I don't watch her that much anymore (all these unboxings and collecting stuff messes with my anxiety), I am happy she seems in a better place and makes videos that she likes (I still watch her tea vlogs, love them 😀)

In all honesty idk who she is however such creators are the best to me. They usually have the best fan base and truly do connect with their fans. For example my favorite youtubers are those that post content that is meant only for a specific audience, like say crime stories, and they make the audience connect together. It makes it so much easier to feel connected with strangers on the internet although you've never spoken to them before, and that is because you're all there for the same reasons ✨

I've only watched a couple of them so maybe others are different, but all my friends and I can only find minimum-wage, insecure, casual shift work service jobs, despite university qualifications and talent or whatever, and I can't see any way out. I don't find it gratifying when an upper middle class twenty something quits their 9-5 in a high growth industry to go freelance or something. The security of those jobs, man. I want that.

Around 2013-2018 I had a RU-vid Kids channel before this one that blew up, had several viral videos, and then completely died. (I made stop-motion short films with dolls, even worked with American Girl & Mattel Inc. a few times.) You PERFECTLY described the feelings of losing relevancy and the crushing defeat that comes with checking Creator Studio after you know you’ve peaked 😅 I basically accepted it and decided to move on as if I’d never done youtube- got a 9 to 5, am working on finishing up college, and am uploading on this channel on the side just for fun. I love your point that it’s integral to have a plan for when your “influencer” career ends!! It doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it just means your life is moving in a new direction :)

texan in tokyo literally decided one day they wanted a family and straight up put in their two weeks notice to youtube basically. They shut down all social media, Grace shut down her blog, and they completely ghosted the internet. According to their LinkedIn, they both now work in some corporate jobs in the US. I admire them a lot for doing that. They quit one of the most flexible jobs in the world, left Japan, and headed to the American corporate world just like that. That must have been incredibly difficult.

@@hwang9756 it was a rlly long time ago and i didnt follow it closely, i think i actually found the channel around the same time ppl were criticizing it a lot. basically from what i remember most criticism was just about grace not ryo (i think those are their names) mainly because she was doing a lot of begging/guilt-tripping ppl into giving them money, and the overall low effort some of her content seemed to have made a lot of ppl think of her as v entitled and lazy, and then ryo quit his job to help her youtube channel and ppl were like this isn't a good move. there was also generally some critiscism about her comic which i never really read so im not sure but i think ppl thought there were some racially insensitive things or like some racial fetishization on her part. i think it was generally wise they quit because looking back i think the situation might've been not super healthy w grace basically at home all day isolated in the country side some of the perceived "lazyness" ppl were getting might've been just depression.

There was also another RU-vid who went into massive debt because they were not being responsible with their finances for the same reason. I don’t remember what her name is but she’s white and American. Her channel is one of those creative diy for children type of channels. She made kinda a small series about not watching her spending habits and getting more than she could afford. She had to sell her customized home, moved into an apartment, etc. It was refreshing to see another youtuber being transparent(:

Same, except that i grew older and had no longer interest in her mystery boxes, other wasteful hauls and personality that frankly crash against mine. So departure was natural, but i never held it against her that she did not stick with new video format, which i actually enjoyed. She could do half and half.

I used to love her "does this thing really work" series as a child, but honestly in the last few years, I've grown to worry about her. She often passes as simply 'quirky', but she's well into her thirties and all her content is about buying mystery boxes and collectible knick-knacks. She also seems to have a bottomless need to fill her home with increasingly creepy decorations. There is a difference between having a personality that not everyone understands and being unstable, and I'm genuinely worried that she's crossed that line in recent years. I hope she's okay behind the scenes.

@@alainaatk.6210 I agree, after not watching her channel for a bit, I felt uncomfortable with the lack of growth/maturity in her content. It would’ve been nice if she had grown up with her audience instead it seemed like she became super childish to connect with her young audience. Before she blew up she was a lot more alternative and would talk about ghost stories that were more teen young adult oriented. She needs to find a healthy balance

thats what always amazed me about people like jenna marbles, like she stared YT before it became this big money maker and then managed to keep her content down to earth and relevant for like a decade before she left. honestly we don't give her enough credit for managing to do that when 99% of channels gain massive popularity and then fall off in a few months or years

She didn’t take herself seriously but she was also incredibly consistent making videos every single week for all those years even if it was just one video they were all successful because of her humor and personality and eagerness to learn about what the internet was up to

What I'm concerned about young RU-vidrs & influencers throwing everything including education to chase fame. On the other side I see RU-vidrs started to prepare their other sources of income & basically know that eventually, they will change careers. Especially now when the cycle is way faster than a few years ago. I have so much respect for Cristine from Simply Nailogical that she still keeps her job.

How do you know they will need to change careers? There are lots of RU-vidrs that are in their 60's, 70's and beyond. If someone is talking about a timeless topic they can have a great channel their entire life. If they are a gamer that might be tough since that's mostly kids, but otherwise, not chasing fame is good and building a YT channel can be great your entire life.

It's sad because like a lot of people, I grew up during the birth of RU-vid. I remember when RU-vid was kind of like the Wild West and subsequently, being a "RU-vidr" wasn't a thing. I kind of miss the old RU-vid, but things are destined to change and we therefore must be ready to roll with the punches.

Charlie is a prime example of how someone can "blow up" on youtube as a teen but not let that get to their head and turn into a circus of scandals and flexing. I love how he was able to bow out gracefully and on his own terms and still retain the friendship and respect of most of the friends he made on this platform.

This video was extremely helpful to me: I recently experienced a growth spurt on my channel and it's given me severe anxiety every day since. I had one video that just kind of took off and the rush felt amazing but then the traffic died and I've been so stressed trying to come up with "what's next." This video really reinforced in me that as long as I'm happy with my content and I'm having fun, the ebbs and flows should be expected and it really shouldn't matter. Thanks for doing this. It's literally exactly what I needed today.

I’m a content creator too. I’m not a youtuber, I make independent adult videos, but I find content about being a youtuber really relatable and validating, and I appreciate you for discussing it. Most people in my industry never publicly get personal because we have to put up this sexy image all the time. It’s so easy to get caught up in the numbers. I’m glad that at least it’s not public information how many clip sales I’ve made as opposed to the view count on youtube, so my metric performance can be more private. I love being a content creator but wondering what will be next (and why) is a big mystery. I don’t think it’s ever too early to start saving and exploring your ideas for what’s next. Anyway, thank you for sharing.

Love this video. I would really like to take it a step further and question exactly WHY "dying" channels are viewed in such a negative and toxic light. Why do people see channels that used to get more views and think "This person is a has-been" "This channel is dying" "This person is not relevant anymore" like those are measures of worth or success? What does it say about the people who think these things? What insecurities are these a reflection of? As someone with a channel that did sorta peak in the early days of youtube, hearing that kind of talk scared me from trying new things. Nobody said it directly to or about me, but I saw plenty of my youtuber friends who trailed off and moved on to something else being spoken about in that way. So then it's like, okay I used to get more views, but now if I put work into these videos and don't get more then it appears like I'm trying too hard, or I'm failing, or I'm embarrassing myself. Why do people see it that way? Why does relevancy matter to so many people and what even makes a person "relevant", and when they're not relevant anymore, why do people literally want them to just disappear off the internet and never come back?

I just wanna take a second to say that I really love how you do callbacks to your own videos. It shows that you remember what you've produced before, prevents redundancy, and encourages me as a viewer to watch older videos that I may not have watched. As a more recent subscriber, it also helps me to "catch up" on your channel.

That's true for other social media as well. I have relatively big instagram following (over 200K) and my engagement has been ridiculously low lately. Linking your value to your engagement is inevitable but it's really dangerous for your mental health. You need to be a little more detached from it. In terms of money, having several sources of income is always a good option, but it really depend on your career path. I'm not super old (turning 36 soon) but I've already changed career twice as an independent artist, so yes, a life is long and you do change as a person, the world is changing and the way you earn money changes as well.

This was so relevant to hear, even as a teeny tiny creator. I feel like such a loser for having done RU-vid for 11 years and yet still haven't "made it", and it's more stressful now I'm a freelancer. The RU-vid Studio makes me hate myself for trying - it's like it's mocking me for keeping on despite my low views and poor growth.
