Helena, Montana. Which, despite being an American, I only really remember because of the Animaniacs song of the 50 states and capitals,set to Turkey in the Straw (and out of copyright). As to the correctness of the map... All I can say is as a proud Minnesotan, Duluth should be about 200 miles further north, on the tip of Lake Superior. Where this map shows Duluth is more where the capital, St Paul is. 34:50, sorry Lolies, but that was your own fault. I was screaming at you to take that route first, because three was easier to play and it was obvious Matt would block you.

Might have been a little more even if Matt would've shared his pro strat ( saving up cards at the start of the game ) at the start of the game. Might not help him win the game, but might help win some converts to the TTR fanclub.

The core skill in TTR is managing randomness. You have to identify the crucial links (the ones that are the hardest to bypass) and grab them early. In general, those are going to be the shortest gray routes, since getting (say) three of any color is easier for your opponents than getting three of a specific color. From the moment that Lolies played the LA - Phoenix link, the Phoenix - El Paso link became absolutely critical for both Lolies and Matt. Lolies chose not to play that link for several turns, waiting to get the minimum cards needed for El Paso - Dallas, which, if someone had poached it, would have been easier to bypass. There are definitely situations where you can be aced out of what you need or simply fail to draw the right cards, but in my (extensive) experience, the better players win most of the time.

Oh, man. I love Ticket to Ride, but if this had been my first game of it, I'd hate it too. I've been turned off to games for years when playing with someone who had so much experience in it that I never even get a chance to get a feel for the game before being pummeled by them.

One of my all time favorite games. There is random elemnts to it but a lot of strategy as well. A lot of your planing is taking the randomnes and risk of losing possible routes into account. Also, this map is more fun with 4-5 players. There are other maps that work better for smaler groups.

As random as this game is, it's simple & fast enough that you can play through a few times & maybe it won't sh*t on you every single time. It would be nice if it had some extra element that let you exchange more than the required cards (like a hefty penalty or condition) in order to steal a route or something like that. As it is, Matt has the right strategy in drawing cards early on.

Having played Ticket to Ride, Ticket to Ride Europe, the map pack 1 - 8, Nordic Countries and Rails and Sails, I would say that the best infection vector is Nordic Countries. The board is beautiful, the map is more contained, and you get to go a lot quicker because it's a 3-player version. I would say to Lolies and Meehan to give that one a go, as that's a way better experience than this one. I would honestly never play the original again, just because Europe added the station dynamic to the game which changes how to play considerably, and reduces the amount of luck you need to win the game.

Lolies, you were so close at the end! You should have taken the 3-gray route first and then the 4-red, that would have made it much harder for Matt to block you. My girlfriend and I were yelling at the screen when you took the red first because we knew Matt was gonna be a snake. Haha

I own 3 versions of the game, and that's mostly because my wife really likes it and it's easy to teach. Personally, I would never choose to play it, but I'm OK playing it when someone else does. I'm mostly an Ameritrash player so Euro-style games aren't often my cup of teat.

I've only played this one once, but I recall getting into it. We had a big group, though, so strategies and progression worked differently. My favourite - or at least, most-played - train game would have to be Trans Europa. The concept is very similar, but tracks aren't colour-coded so your own line can end up helping your opponents if you're unlucky.

I'm Canadian and I'm just glad to be included on this map! haha I made a slightly off color joke the other night about how the route from Calgary to Winnipeg is all white. Honestly, we're super inclusive and multi-cultural up here, but the prairies can be a bit........old-fashioned. I live in SK btw.

I was crying NO! at 34:10 - Lolies had everything she needed to claim Phoenix -> El Paso (using two greens and a wild), which she'd absolutely have needed, and was a dangerously easy-to-get route, and instead she claims the difficult route that *could* have waited a bit at El Paso -> Dallas. I think that's where the game went definitively Matt's way. It's not just the relative difficulty of the routes, either. By playing that route she showed her hand that LA->Phoenix wasn't just aggression, but actual intent. (Why, yes, I do overthink stuff like this, is it that obvious?)

Actually, I'm with Lolies and Meehan on that one. It's funny because, what Matt describes as being the best part of the game, kinda sounds like the worst to me. The fact that you can troll other players by blocking their route kinda feel like punishing them twice for not being lucky enough to draw the cards they need. Don't get me wrong, I can understand the appeal (it's tactical because you have to focus on your route and the others') but at the same time, I feel like it's reasonably unfair and must be incredibly frustrating. Kinda the best game to play if you plan into losing your friends forever XD

I wouldn’t say I was slandering it. I like teaching it to people and I enjoy other peoples’ enjoyment of the game but I also want to express my own feelings about it. I’m sad that I don’t like it but I just don’t. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well, all arguing in this video came to shouting on others for yours mistakes. Both Matt and Lolies did the same move - firstly taking colored route, not any colour route. In this game usually take any colour first because it's easier for opponents to take. It was so unpleasant to watch that hatred being put on others while if you're angry, you should be on yourself.
