LEARN HOW TO MAKE THIS CHINESE DIM SUM FAVOURITE - LO BAK GOU (TURNIP CAKES)!
LAY HO LAY HO indeed today! Talk about a childhood favourite, this popular dim sum dish will surely turn your home kitchen into a fancy restaurant. Join me in this episode and learn how to make an easy Chinese style turnip cake recipe (lo bak gou). Let's begin
Ingredients:
1lb shredded lo bak (or Japanese daikon)
7-8 dried shiitakes (rehydrated)
3 sticks green onion
1 cup rice flour
1 tsp cane sugar
pinch of salt
2 cups water
3 tbsp avocado oil
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp black vinegar
1 tbsp chili oil ( • Most addictive Red Chi... )
1 tsp white sesame seeds
Directions:
1. Peel the lo bak and shred into a bowl
2. Squeeze out the liquid from the rehydrated shiitakes. Then, carefully remove the stalks to discard. Chop the shiitakes into small cubes
3. Finely chop the green onions and set aside a little bit for garnish
4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the rice flour, cane sugar, salt, and 2 cups of water
5. Grease a 10 inch baking dish with a drizzle of avocado oil. Preheat the oven to 350F
6. Heat up a nonstick pan to medium heat. Add 2 tbsp of avocado oil followed by the shiitake mushrooms. Sauté for 2-3min
7. Add the green onions and sauté for about 1min. Add the shredded lo bak and sauté until the lo bak is fully cooked and tender, around 7-8min
8. Give the batter a stir and pour into the pan. Stir and cook for about 2-3min. The batter will become quite thick
9. Transfer the mixture onto the greased baking dish. Use a spatula to flatten the mixture using the dish as a mould. Then, cover the pan and bake for 25min
10. In the meantime, make the sauce by combining together the soy sauce, black vinegar, and chili oil
11. Allow the turnip cake to cool uncovered for about 5-8min. Then, use a spatula to carefully release it from the baking dish. Gently cut the turnip cake into 6 squares
12. Heat up a nonstick pan to medium heat. Add 1 tbsp avocado oil followed by the turnip cakes and sear for about 3-4min
13. Carefully flip the turnip cakes and sear for another 3-4min. Plate the cakes, garnish with green onions, white sesame seeds, and pour over the sauce to serve

Made this for my wife's birthday and it turned out perfectly. What really cracks me up about Wil's recipes is that he always introduces them as "easy" and "simple" with "not a lot of ingredients." Maybe for him, but for ME, it's a different story! 😂

Wow. This is so close to the Muthiyas we make in India. Generally made with wheat flour or gluten free flours like buckwheat or Amaranth. We mix the flour , grated veggies with spices into a dough, shape into cylinders and steam them. Once done, cut into roundels, roast them golden brown in a seasoning of sesame seeds and red chilies. Served with mint chutney Will definitely try this too. Actually have some daikon in the refrigerator 😀

Hi Wil. Your book "Cook with Confidence" arrived in Tasmania yesterday. It has been read, first recipes selected and the few things we don't have in the cupboard will be purchased during our next trip to Launceston. Then we will begin by making Chili Oil. Looks delicious. I usually add chestnuts to the mushrooms. And if I can't get daikon, I replace it with carrot or pumpkin. Works just as well.

I was so happy to find this video. Most of the turnip cake sold around here has dried shrimp in it. While a few restaurants have a vegetarian version, it's not always as tasty as the original. This looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.

Tried this recipe! It turned out pretty good but I think I will adjust the water measurement to 1.5 cups of water to make the cake less mushy. Love the convenience of baking it rather then steaming it!

I cooked up this recipe last night.... it was SOOOOO good, I would probable add a bit more salt... but the sauce does complete the cakes. A Keeper! I just discovered a great asian market near my home with everything I need to make every YMC recipes... keep the asian recipes coming? ;o)

Your turnip cake came out so pretty! I've seen others that were a bit greasy, though I think that may have been because the rice flour sometimes cooks transparent? But these look yummy and deceptively simple XD

@@alysoncocking1236 Everywhere I've lived, they've been called "daikon radish," rather than "turnip," which is related to Swedes/rutabagas, cabbage-y. Maybe radishes and turnips are related, too?

I prepared it now and combined it with Soy sprouts/carrot juliennes and vegan chicken chunks. Very delicious but the next time I will eat it one day later, because I think the taste will be more intensive after a rest and the consistency will be better. I used some turnips, because I don't like radish so much.

This is the equivalent vegan recipe to Italian Risotto Giallo al salto to re-use Risotto allo Zafferano fried and taste. We use Rise CARNAROLI (Japonica) one othe the most Italian rice. We use it also in ARANCINI o ARANCINE in Sicily. Beautiful!

Finally made this vegan turnip cake without the dried shrimp which I am so used to eating in Singapore, but hard to find in England. You're right, the sauce is definitely needed to make up for the blandness of the turnip cake but boy, did we enjoy it! Thank you so much!

Hi Wil! This recipe looks delicious. In the absence of rice flour, can I use arrowroot starch? Will it perform as needed? Or is cornstarch a better substitute? Also, if I double the recipe, what size pan would you recommend? I don’t know what the capacity is of the 10” pan you are recommending for a single recipe.Thanks.

Hi Amy, if you can’t find rice flour try soaking rice overnight and blending the drained rice in fresh water, it will yield a similar batter, that is what I do and it works perfectly. I hope this helps!

This looks wonderful! We'll have to cheat a bit, because I can't eat hot peppers in any form, but we'll get something smoky. Since we're already improvising, I'd like to get black vinegar as similar as possible to what you use. Is it the kind made from glutinous rice? Do you have a preference on how long it's aged?
