In this video I talk you through how the Amazon panel interview works and how they decide. Your outcome is entirely dependant on the final discussion had by the amazon interview panel. And even though knowing how the amazon interview panel works won't change your outcome, it's great information help de-mystify the process.

Thanks, I went through the last phase of 5 interviews and 4 out of 5 were great!! But there was one where I did not seem to convince the interviewer and we did not "click" ... So not sure what to expect, he really insisted on the same technical question and put me many road blocks as I explained the options, what do you think?

Hi Gigi, thank you for creating these videos, super helpful to gain perspectives from the lens of an Amazon interviewer and a bar raiser to top it :) Wanted to ask you a question which always comes to my mind while preparing - Is it a dealbreaker (for hire or no-hire decision) if the candidate does not have past experience stories which are at the level of the work being done at Amazon. Even though the candidate has the knowledge to back up his/her experience and answer all the supporting questions from the interviewer. Basically, are Amazon interviewers looking for over the top past experiences only?
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 4 года назад
If I've understood your question properly, you're asking, if your examples don't reflect the scale and complexity of the work being done by current Amazonians at the level you are interviewing, is it a deal breaker? I would say in the majority of cases yes. As a Bar Raiser I would be concerned if you haven't operated at the scale and complexity of the team. Sometimes candidates show a history of rapid growth and the panel may decide it's worth a risk because they believe the person can cope with an extraordinary growth curve. But this would, in my experience, be the exception rather than rule. Hope that helps. 🧙‍♀️

I had a few external people shadow the onsite interviews I have been on but even though I asked they didn't specify an existence of a bar raiser. Which was bizarre. Out of my 4 onsite interviews I aced 3 of them, coding challenges completed, behavioral questions answered above and beyond satisfactory level and the only one that went bad (pretty bad) was with a 6 month experienced amazonian that critically lacked the abilities of an interviewer. I'm at a loss as to what to expect and it kills me inside that one inexperienced recruiter can ultimately be the reason i'll be rejected
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 2 года назад
How do you know your answers were “above and beyond satisfactory levels”? The satisfactory level is better than 50% of Amazonians currently at that level in similar roles. Do you have extensive exposure to a significant number of Amazonians that meet that criteria? My point is there are variables and data that you simply don’t have access to. Plus if you had 1 bad interview it’s unlikely to outweigh 3 great ones. You haven’t been rejected yet, don’t presume you will be.

Can you share a time when a bar raiser would Vito when the hiring manager really wants to hire someone? What about the other way around? What are the red signs or qualities of those candidates? (I’ve heard the results could feel a little arbitrary at times, and just want to do my best to avoid making critical mistakes)
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 3 года назад
The only reason they would be at odds, is if they can't agree that the candidate is Raising The Bar. That can happen for any number of variations of 1) they don't agree the behaviours evidenced in Key LPs are above average 2) they don't agree that the scope and complexity of the examples are reflective of the level 3) one see flags that are "concerns" in LPs. Giving you just one example of these wouldn't help you avoid them. The results can only seem arbitrary to those on the outside. Candidates who have only their own experience and self perception as their data set. Looking at it logically, a process that invests between 9 -15 business hours per candidate gathering, reviewing and discussing evidence is unlikely to result in arbitrary outcomes.

Every round surfaces new evidence. Just because a small amount of evidence in early rounds had the manager feeling positive it can easily change once much more volume and diversity of data is gathered. Because it's not a completely mathematical process opinion still has some bearing. A Hiring Manager is hiring for their role, they know it better than the BR. The BR may think you'd make a great Amazonian but if the Hiring Manager doesn't feel you're exactly right for the role- that's when they can have different views.

@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 3 года назад
Hi Arman- more often than not the Bar Raiser is not from the team you are applying for a role in. But that's not always easy to work out from job titles, so that's a bit of a hit and miss methodology. So if an interviewer tells you they aren't able to answer specific questions about the role as they aren't on the team, or words to that effect, chances are they are the BR. BUT that's not 100% reliable. Sometimes people from outside teams will get drafted into a panel, if the Recruitment Co-ordinator is having a hard time finding interviewers. So in summary, there's no 100% fool proof methodology. 🧙‍♀️

The format of the final interviews is similar to the phone screen, right? If the phone screen person also interview me at the loop, which data (from the phone screen or the loop) that he will use at the panel meeting? I can reshape the example, the body of the example is good, I used it in phone screen as an example try to avoid missing deadlines/failure, but I can twist it to say I failed the first and what I did to avoid the failure again ( in case they ask me about the failure questions- and at work I did not have significant failure). I told the phone screener I avoid the failure ( which is true), if I say in the loop interview that I failed at the beginning, it is not exactly consistent, although the really important part is how and what I did to be successful. Make sure your stories are consistent when you reshape them. All data gathered from all of your interviews is stored centrally and visible to EVERYONE interviewing you, so they'll spot inconsistencies. Evidence at early rounds is used to get you to the next round- it isn't used as a matter of course to make the decision at the final round. Sometimes it is referred back to if they feel they need more validation on evidence gathered at final round- but in the main it is not brought into the final round de-brief.

@@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 could you please make videos on salary negotiation in pre-interview call and post final loop? Hi GG if I only got the final interview and I was not interviewed by the hiring manager, what does it mean?

It means nothing about you. It’s just something about their process.

The HR was the third party team for my team, she asked me in 2 principles each one two questions, I can’t get any clue if she liked my answers or not she was neutral, but for my it wasn’t the best interview I’ve performed at the panel. Is this an indicator? It has been 5 days now without a response and the status is still under consideration
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 10 месяцев назад
Studies show there is little correlation between how candidates feel an interview went and how interviewers feel it went. There’s no lint in trying to second guess. If you haven’t heard in 7 working days follow up with your recruiter.

@@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 someone who refers me in this position, asked one of the people who made the panel with me that they did the debierf and should have been notified by now, is there any something confidential to retrieve the result of the debrief? As he answered generically not specifically
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503

Only your recruiter is permitted to give you the outcome. It would be a massive confidentiality breach for someone else on the panel to share the outcome with you/your friend.

Why would someone make it to the panel interview if the hiring manager does not want to work that person?
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 3 года назад
Because they may have thought they were a good prospect when they first interviewed them, but after an additional 5-7hrs worth of evidence gathered on them, they may change their mind.

Hello GG. I have completed my loop interview yesterday. I have really did well in 1st 4 rounds gave excellent examples for each questions but in the final round with hiring manager out of 5 questions I couldn't come up with good examples for two questions...What are my chances of getting selected ?

The decision to hire is based on the total evidence gathered. If you really did excel in 4 interviews, 1 porcine is unlikely to sink you.

I just had my two first loop interviews! The one with my hiring manager was GREAT and he even recognised me so. However, the interview with the bar raiser was more tricky and I believe It wasn't my best interview although I somehow did good. At the end of the interview the bar raiser literally told me that he will inform the Hiring Manager as he will decide. Does that mean in your experience that the bar raiser is not that sure about me fitting the company and relies on the Hiring Manager for the final decision?
@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503
No the Bar Raiser is the final decision maker after they’ve conducted a full de-brief of all the interviewers.
