In a world where literally no one is guaranteed to love and accept us, we can choose to love and accept ourselves. We can't control other people but we do have the ability to control our own thoughts and our own actions. God didn't make a mistake when he made us.

When you said "whether you're wearing fresh braids or old braids these white folks don't even know the difference!" That hit hard cos bro, it's my experience. The hair criticisms always come from our own people which drives me crazy. I've been in France for a few months and I wear different wigs every other week to the high school where I teach and these people don't even know the difference. They all just think I style my hair different all the time. Even when they've seen me on my very low-cut hair. Now the only girl who comes to tell me that my braids are old or that my wigs don't blend is a BLACK GIRL like me. In my head I'm like dafuck is wrong with this bi*ch. who even asked your opinion how I choose to wear my hair? Then should I spend close to 100€ weekly to get fresh braids? Wth! We're really our own enemies out here.🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

One time I was just standing in line at the market and I had some of the fauklocxs ( did them myself)- Not a pro so a few were not perfect.... This older black lady loudly tells me " It's time for those to get redone, I do hair" We got into a whole argument SMH. I feel like she did it because the owner was being nice to me as well as the older gentleman with her, which was her father... Jealousy is so unbecoming.. if she wanted to be helpful there was definitely a nicer way.

Tryna understand how the hell creating dating profiles for social experiments without a person's consent became a thing. Incels recently did this to Kidology as well to prove that her being celibate is her fault cause guys wanted her on dating sites, and they don't seem to consider that making a profile from the male gaze will obviously attract more men, and the environment of the person matters as well.

The funny thing is black girls in France and Europe wear their hair like that all the time. With confidence. Like they don't even think about it. Not so much in UK but in the rest of Europe. I used to think it looked bad. But I envied their confidence. Now I love the look. They are comfortable in their skin and body in a way you don't see in the UK or USA. It encouraged me to wear my hair out. my hair would be regarded as more "acceptable" curly kinky, but I never had confidence to wear it out.

I'm a french black woman and trust me here black women are utmostly ashamed of their hair especially those with the 4C pattern and skin color cuz our own people make fun of us! bleaching product sell as fast as hot croissants. colorism here is very real, some BLACK singers like Tay-C and Keblack are the ones perpetuating it, we just don't take our camera to sit and talk about it because they say we like to victimize, also France isn't like USA, you guys are more open to speak about the most little things.... here it's a kind of a conservative and slightly puritan vibes 🤝

I live in France and I am African , and I can tell you that we STRUGGLE a lot with our hair! And also a lot of us don’t wear natural hair. We’re brainwashed by American “black” girls curly hair, long straight hair too. It’s the same everywhere for black girls. Even when I was in Africa, white looking hair was the standard and still is today except in East Africa. The thing is about you, have self confidence, love yourself

This is partly one of the reasons that i locked my hair. I knew that i am beautiful but i was tired of looking at society’s version of “beautiful” and constantly comparing myself and feeling like i never fit into the beauty standard.

My southern momma who was born on the 40's used to remind me when she was living that to them who ain't us "If it ain't white it ain't right" and for me to always remember that.. I hear her words resonating with me to this day and the reminder to not lose myself chasing any standard that isn't my own.. You touched on this subject so well, and at the end of the day, Lipgloss comment about white men being who notices her with her natural hair is something VERY relatable.. Unfortunately for me to a point of it being uncomfortably fetishized.. Folks can claim it ain't what it is, but like you said the girls who get it get it....😏

I am east african and have somewhat looser hair texture and still I grew up being told: bone stright hair is the only way to be beautiful, it took me reaching my thirties and having a daughter to unpack that mentality and accept what I have, but also I am muslim and I cover my hair so it has been very intresting moving to the US and seeing how people treat me.

4c hair girlies go through it Fr comparing to those who CAN define or coil their hair. It’s also within our community that it’s seen as dirty among ourselves. For example "some" of our black men will say they like the girl with 3c 3b 4a 4b rather than 4c . So I think that’s regardless that we’re all black 🙄

I want to disagree and say that long hair isn’t proximity to whiteness, but it is a representation of health and ability to bear healthy children. In Africa, we do something called hair threading where we basically stretch our hair. This is a tradition has been going on for centuries. Hair stretching helps us elongate our strands. That allows us to get the length in our hair to show, this has nothing to do with whiteness. I think the fact that we get textures that are very similar to the same texture that European hair (like the Brazilian bundles) has is more closer to whiteness than the length and the stretching of natural hair. However, I still wanna argue that it’s not a European hair style to wear extensions or bundles. Technically most of the time it’s Indian or even Chinese hair, and secondly, it’s just to add length. I think we have to stop associating long straight hair with European or being closer to whiteness. Yes, it’s true that there is some sort of beauty standard. Anyone of any race can straighten their hair and it shouldn’t mean that you’re trying to look closer to white. It’s just straight hair.

Another reason we need to stop associating straight African hair as closer to whiteness because it’s never closer to whiteness. White hair when straightened is a completely different texture look and shine than African hair when it’s straightened. You might as well say that the African hair that is straightened is Afro-straight or something because it literally still has some texture and even unique luster to it. It’s a very unique hair texture on its own. Some people attach straight hair with whiteness because their hair is naturally straight, but does that mean that white people with naturally curly hair is suddenly black? I don’t think so.

My freshmen year of college I used to define my curls with gel and I remember my white roommate saying to me how she was surprised my hair was so loose because “normally darkskin people have thick hair”. Had I not coated my hair in gel I would’ve had that same 4c “thick hair” she was talking about. The following year I ended up transferring to a new PWI where the black percentage was near 5%. This time I wore a curly wig with 3b curls and they way the yts treated me was completely different. The looser my hair, the more familiar they were towards me.

@ɖơƖƖ great points. I definitely agree. I have not experienced that exactly (as a guy) per se. But I am a brown skinned black man who has a skin tone similar to what I would say Lori Harvey for example. For me I noticed that in black spaces, especially ,I am perceived differently for my hair. I used to wear my hair really short, like next to bald. People would ask me if I'm mixed or where I'm from. I wore my hair in a shrunken but perfectly combed shape fro (then I'm viewed as black) just with lighter skin. If I define my hair with gel (my hair is 4b) I get perfect little curls (black) people ask me if I have a perm in my hair or if I'm (really black). I had a white teacher also noticed my hair and take interest to how my curls looked. When I had locs I was viewed as black again and only would get compliments from naturals or people with locs. When I dyed ny hair ginger/ honey blonde and because my skin is lighter, White people especially red heads thought I had a feature similar to them so they always gave me a nod (like when 2 black people see eachother). Now I have longer straight hair and everyone compliments me about it especially if I have the loose outward facing curls that literally everyone does now. People now also think once again I am mixed (Brazilian, half-Mexican, or just not "all the way black"). Moral of the story hair plays a major role in how you are perceived.

Thank you for this video! Such an important conversation to be had. I agree to an extent about the poor vs wealth thing. But when it comes to acceptable natural hair styles vs unacceptable some of it has to do with interest and knowledge because you can still get the “acceptable” natural hair look yourself with cheap products. A lot of times ppl who have the “unacceptable” natural hair look it’s because they haven’t taken them time to learn about their own hair and what their hair needs and likes. Also I think we give white ppl too much credit sometimes. They do not represent long hair as theirs. Africans, black ppl can and have had long hair for centuries. Long hair is a representation of health for our particular hair type. We just gotta get back to what’s healthy for our hair and stop trying to take care of our hair like someone else’s. For me, I grew up with a very pro black mom who wore here hair curly. So pretty to me, was always brown skin and curly hair. I think saying pretty means long hair is whiteness is a blanket statement for the masses. I say this to say, I know some ppl subconsciously believe what you’re saying because they didn’t have the luxury of growing up accepting themselves. I can’t deny that I wasn’t aware of these notions because peers have a big influence on us, so I did see these ideas while growing up. However this isn’t everyone’s experience or an objective truth for people growing up. Your other points about the bigger picture I wholeheartedly agree with! PS: hey girl hey fellow pisces!!

Her hair texture is still a kinky / curly texture it’s not 3c it’s still close to 4c and quite honestly not the “standard”. It’s because she grew her hair longer but if it was way shorter probably in the same boat. I don’t think you have seen her hair growth videos to know how she’s actually struggled

17:32 That point is off, literally all ethnicities except true african ethnicities have long hair/capable of having long hair or however one wants to word it, the shrinkage and breakage issue doesn’t apply to anyone else, hence why the statement long hair is closer to whiteness…what? Look at Indigenous people or chinese or arabs or whoever literally because as I said the shrinkage aspect/getting longer hair being very difficult is an unique trait to 3c-4c hair which again as a trait belongs to africa. Long hair in women for that reason has been viewed as a sign of femininity (with like some exceptions in various cultures where long hair is also viewed as a masculine trait as well as feminine). Straight hair is the most often hair type but especially by asian hair as they make that graphic up the most and have the (vast majority/a characteristic of theirs) straightest and heaviest hair, most of the wigs black women buy (as the largest consumers) are from countries in South Asia (India most often) because of the texture/straightness and thickness and that’s why the point of getting their hair to get closer to whiteness is not working in and of itself.

Okay 1st of all she's speaked from an American lense or any place where white people have major control. She didn't miss any points. I'll use America for example since it is racially and ethnically very diverse. In America white beauty standards have historically reigned Supreme above all others. This means everyone who bought into that (whether to survive or by "choice") in some way is aiming to align with those Eurocentric beauty ideals. So for black women who may buy Asian hair, don't do it to look more Asian. They (sometimes) do it to have straighter hair that fits the (white) beauty standard more. Asian hair is the closest to African hair in texture and thus the most natural or believable. 2ndly, EVERY racial group on this planet has the ability to have long hair. So no, it's not everyone except "true Africans" (whatever that means). Lastly, to give more context, let's use Asian women that already have straight black hair. They might feel pressure to lighten the color and curl it a certain way to fit more of the beauty standard. It's the same thing as black women. For White American beauty purposes, a White, tan, thin, beautiful, young, woman with long blonde hair and blue eyes is the ultimate goal. Everyone has measured themselves to this in one way shape or form. Whether it's to become more thin and pretty, whether a white girl with pale skin tans, a darker hair girl goes blonde, a curly hair girl straightens her hair, etc. It's all subconsciously or consciously going back to appearing "less ethnic" and more "mainstream".

@Naomi Olutayo the og poster has a point though. That part about the woman in the vid saying that people came after her hair appreciation/ washing video also had a point. I don't think she should be dragged but her hair is looser than the average black person that is one checkpoint way from where blackness really starts. To appear the most identifiably black is having these features: deep to very dark skin, Wide and full facial features (no matter the size), kinky coily 4c/4b hair, in some cases being physically curvaceous or muscular than other ethnic and racial groups. So about 4 points I'll use myself as an example to see how many boxes I check. I don't have dark skin, I have full but smaller features, I have 4b Hair but only wear it straight so I'll mark it as a no for the sake of this, I have some physical attributes that I would definitely say are average of a black man. I have about 2/4. Have less of these "points" while living in an American society Definitely breads privilege and a certain level of advantage for not looking as black or African. Especially, looking at it from a White, colorism, or featurism lense. This was a crazy example and I have never explained it like this but I did it to make the point that the women in the vid having looser hair is one less of a black feature she has to "deal with". I say this very sparingly because its harder to convey thought in one post / comment.

It was super damaged and short. I bet she was treated the same as me who has all the features you mentioned. Now, her hair is thriving and has grown so I know people see her differently, but probably only black women at the end of the day.

I usually love your vids and dont worry, you didn't lose a subscriber cause of this video... but sis you missed the mark on this one. Very disingenuous of you to think that just because you're dark skin that gives you the Gold card for the all oppressions of being a Black woman. And don't get me wrong, I am dark skin too... most likely darker than you and I am a colourism crusader in the sense that I always push discussions highlighting the plights of dark skin women... but your hair is more acceptable and less trivalized than a true 4Z (actualy 4c) girlie. You sounded bigoted and ignorant with that remark which left a bitter feeling for the rest of the video. "Love yourself" yes, but that should not be a replacement for you demanding and having the right to receive love from others.

Agreed. We all know that there are certain textures within our community that are more acceptable and even praised. To gloss over and ignore that that is gaslighting. Being dark skin has nothing to do with the conversation regarding hair texture.
