If I had a penny for every horror game Manly has played this month that features an anime aesthetic and european characters turning into cannibals I would have two pennies right now. Which isn't a lot, but that's a pretty neat coincidence.

Charon games in a nutshell *goes left*: Dies a horrible death *goes right*: turns out you are a horrible person who ruined the lives of many people *goes straight*: a meteor has almost crashed into the world. you sacrificed yourself by launching into the meteor in order to prevent the extinction of anime girls/your onee chan. *goes back*: you just get the bad end.

Gretel: Enters the suspicious house even thought Hansel forbid her. Also Gretel: Blame Hansel for abandoning her.

Imagine an anime sibling relationship without sexual or romantic vibes

From all I recall of The Dark Side of Red Riding Hood, this is less dark but I feel it works for the Hansel & Gretel story; the best way to twist this story is the bond between the siblings. As has become the norm, Charon's endings are all alternate worlds so we've got accidental abandonment all the way to a... happy relationship in the woods that's certainly unexpected. Shark teeth Gretel does not mess around, regardless of the ending you get.

Idk why, but Manly saying Onii-tan is somehow really funny to me

"Onii-tan's marks, they're still here" is not a sentence I want to hear out of context.

Moral of the story: - Don't be poor - Don't underestimate the cruelty of grannys - Don't underestimate the cruelty of children - Be cruel - If your little sister joins an *O* * *R* * *G* * *Y* you should join too

Gretel : "Oni-tan, since we're here why don't we save here?" Me : "Well maybe because you are deep in the forest" Gretel : "Even if Oni-tan dies later on, we can always start over again from here" *They got us in the first half not gonna lie*

I gather that little girls talking in the third person is supposed to be some sort of endearing trope in japanese media, but hoooly shit does it not have the intended effect when translated into English.

Gee the Gawr Gura origin story is a lot different than I thought it would be.

I think what they found in that house wasn't a brothel but rather a weird coven having a mass which could explain why everyone was naked and dancing, and since there's at least 2 witches in the game it could explain it, specially if we take the guy with "snake eyes" at face value. ALthough "snake eyes" can be an innuendo for "untrusty person", so it could also still be a brothel I guess.

If you had a dollar for every time Gretel says "Onii-tan" in this game, then you would probably have a good amount of money. Except I wouldn't, because I would give all of that money to Gretel, in exchange for never having to hear her say "Onii-tan" again. Seriously

That jump scare didn't happen fast enough to get any reaction out of me other than laughing about how late it was.

Can we just appreciate how often Manly uploads??

"And you know, when Gretel's super duper smart, Gretel's going to marry Onii-tan!" Uh, when you're smarter, you'll learn that that's called "incest" and is deeply frowned upon.

Making *ANIME* together with your little sister is probably the worst ending ever... Imagine all the trashy anime they would come up with. 😰

Much like all the "darker and edgier" retellings of Little Red, I have to wonder how many of these devs are actually familiar with the source material. Yes, a dark retelling of the perfectly cheery story featuring child abandonment, abduction and cannibalism, right? Makes for great unintended comedy, though. Gretel saying "onii-tan" and referring to herself in the third person made me laugh out loud; The abrupt jump from a 3 to an 8 on the anime scale made for a pretty hilarious juxtaposition.

The bad ending was incest all along. (After so much E.C. seeing Hansel as the "smart" sibling threw me off a bit ngl)

I'd be horrified of the 'strange house' ending if Gretel didn't seem evil already; but she wasn't a 'child'. There's something VERY off about her. Hansel would be the only one to die in that end.

My immersion into this retelling of the famous German fairy tale was instantly shattered upon seeing "onii-tan" in the dialogue :|

At first I thought the parents were cruel, but the more I've seen Gretel the more I understood that leaving her in the forest might be a good idea.

Game didn't even had proper cannibalism in it. Only mentions of it. I'd say it's a pretty tame Charon game

Wow, Charon’s art is so good. Wish one of their games would have a normal ending though, it’s always either super sad or super messed up.

The amount of times he said "Proceed" is the amount of times I got reminded of the time I made frozen chicken.

I kind of hated the one cabin ending. Kinda rushed to be "I run away, then I'm immediately traumatized by running away." It's a short game, but none of the other endings had that whiplash effect.

Caron has this habit of inverting the meaning of true, good and bad ends, so in Caron's games if you see a lot of true endings you can imediatly shift it's meaning to however the diferent one is called. in this one, all true ends are actually bad ends and the one bad end is actually the true end.

I like the little flower reference from the menherafflesia game, that was pretty nice to see. I don't know if it's just me though but this one felt kind of lacklustre. Can't really tell why. The endings seemed very short and the only one that caught me off guard was the cabin ending. The one at the end was okay but that's basically the actual story. I guess the abandonment ending made me feel kind of bad for Hansel.

as a german we are trying to understand how this is the dark side this is a bedtime story like the part where hans drowned in a river in the bedtime stories

I feel like a better twist would have been the two of them replacing the witch. That whole nonsense felt like they were trying to create fear through sheer shock value, and that feels cheap. Also, very uncomfortable. Love your channel.

Actually, I don't think the endings are a different reality in Charon's games. I think they're just part of the long play. Slight spoilers for the Dice game. In the Dice/Die game, there's a route where one of the early bad endings is about the girl trapping you in your phone and talking about how there's no need for physical bodies. While I originally thought this was "whacky" of Charon, it suddenly hit me that it made sense. It was all symbolism. The phone and the Mc's presence in social media was how she found out everything on him, and finally the truth behind "physical love" and bodies had to do with the "who are you" of the girl's backstory. With this in mind... It's simple. Gretel is the grand scope antagonist. Charon loves twists, but in particular early twists that lead you to false flags when the truth was in front of you the whole time. Let's look at the narrative. At first, the game presents us Hansel - who looks like he's the crazed MC obsessed with his innocent little sister, sleeping as she does. We take this at face value, and slowly we start seeing deviations... Hansel still wanted to go home. He didn't want to be abandoned by his parents. He cared for Gretel like any big brother would. But Gretel didn't want that. Gretel's love was perverse all along. The window was closed by her, not the parents. And from there, we branch onto the different outcomes. Gretel constantly downplays herself, tries to convince Hansel into staying, talking about poor her, how their parents abandoned her, how she's a useless child. So there's no point going home. From a sympathetic perspective, this makes sense... Except Gretel is trying to persuade Hansel to let go. She wants him for herself, tied down and treating her as a lover would. And if she can't have that, if Hansel doesn't show signs of breaking down, then she will just have to manipulate him and haunt him until the end. Hence the existence of her ditching him. She did nothing but watch as he found out. Because she wanted him to break, just like in that ending where he kills their parents. Every ending is "true" as Hansel can't see Gretel like that, except for the bad one - where we finally see completely the truth of Gretel, and how in the end Hansel really was just a normal brother. Even when he snaps in that one ending, he still thinks of her as family to avenge. ...Well, that's what I think anyway. Charon likes to foreshadow the truth while playing and toying with the player. I really like their games due to the exploration of human psychology and mental illness - particularly in those who seek the wrong path, often out of a twisted love. As always, a disturbing treat from Charon no less.

Hansel must not be very wise if his plan to not be intentionally abandoned in the forest involves going out to the forest with his parents anyway and then falling asleep just like they planned. How about just don't go when asked? maybe go somewhere else instead, like to another person to tell them about your parents trying to abandon you.
