I AM living proof that one can heal on all levels of the self! I grew up in poverty with an alcoholic mother. She was a heavy smoker and our home was dirty and sparse. Today, with many years of therapy, I’m happy, live in a beautiful home and have an abundance of everything I want! How? I sat and journaled my pattern reactions. I ask the Universe to assist in my exit out of the polarity. It works!

This is me. My childhood trauma really wasn't too bad, but the way I learned to deal with people (or not deal with) led me into very traumatic relationships in my adulthood. The lack of a clear sense of self leaves you so vulnerable. This has been an eye opening realization

Ana's list: (1) Learn the science of c-PTSD (read, for example, The Body Keeps the Score and Pete Walker's Complex PTSD) (2) Do the Daily Practice consistently to help with emotional regulation. (3) Get out of unhealthy or one-sided relationships/friendships. (4) Learn to embrace solitude (healthy time alone) - e.g. taking yourself on fun dates (5) Stop spending money on things that are hurting you/not helping you (6) Build habits around strong exercise (7) Stop negative talk/judgement/unsolicited advice of others (and self!); challenge all-or-nothing thinking. (8) Be a better friend (9) Be a good worker (10) Learn how to date (to get to know potential partners) (8)

"To stay with that shakiness-to stay with a broken heart, with a rumbling stomach, with the feelings of hopelessness and wanting to get revenge-that is the path of true awakening. Sticking with that uncertainty, getting the knack of relaxing in the midst of chaos, learning not to panic-this is the spiritual path. Getting the knack of catching ourselves, of gently and compassionately catching ourselves is the path of the warrior. We catch ourselves one zillion times as once again, whether we like it or not, we harden into resentment, into a sense of relief, a sense of inspiration.” Pema Chodran, When Life Falls Apart.

When I was 15 I wanted so badly to get a live in job far away. My parents said I could go if I got one, so I did and then they wouldn't let me. I didn't know what I was running away from, I didn't have enough life skills or knowledge to articulate it. My life would have been so different. It was my body's way of solving the problem, but was over ruled by externals. It was to be 40 years before I finally escaped. I wish there was some kind of screening of young adults so they can address these issues when they are able to get out of their parent's control. So many lives are wasted through simply not knowing.

When you feel the pain of the trauma start to flood out of you and your crying deeply... lie on your back and breath deeply and softly into it... many times we start to hyper ventilate when we are releasing such deep trauma, which puts our body back into fight or flight... Breathing deeply, turns that off and helps the mind and body to relax in the moment. Take control of your body and teach it to relax. This is very self empowering. I wish I had known this when I first started healing.

Happy you said that about ditching therapy - after 2.5 years I said goodbye to my therapist last week. I think I finally realised, as you did, it just wasn't helpful enough and just made me stuck in the negativity of what happened without any real breakthroughs. She was lovely and taught me many things, but ultimately I felt in my gut that it was time to go. So thanks for stepping out and saying that, and for the video.

Well this was a reassurance that show I’m doing my journey as well as I can. Therapy for me helped me by showing me what healthy love look like by seeing how my therapist treated me with boundaries, it was eye opening to recognize how she treated me was everything I wanted. I was able to mirror her how she treated others and look for things she said and done in others. That was so valuable for me to experience since I really didn’t have healthy connections.
@Sussana13

Could you provide some examples of treatment with boundaries
@sweetb2750
@sweetb2750 Год назад
@@Sussana13 one of the most profound one was I would sometimes make deprecating jokes during sessions, sometimes when we hit a really sever wall I would automatically go to trying to make a joke about myself. Once I did it, I laughed, I looked at her and she just stared at me. Not in a mean way, but just her not allowing me to “martyr” myself. I got serious again and she reassured me how it must have hurt, what a horrible thing it was, it was deeply terrible situation I didn’t deserve. I had to sit in that feeling and she sat with me while I ugly cried. She didn’t shame or scold me for going back to my coping mechanism, she showed me it was not going to give me the reaction I wanted and that we couldn’t go further until I worked out how to feel feelings and have acceptance. I cut back on a lot of friends who enabled my blocking mechanism.
@Sussana13
@Sussana13 Год назад
@@sweetb2750 so how those friends that you blocked how did they behaved toward you/ treated you? Did they belittle you or was mean to you? I’m just trying to understand and compare to my life ?
@sweetb2750
@sweetb2750 Год назад
@@Sussana13 it was mainly how my mom and my ex-husband treated me, it was a lot of blaming me for their feelings, telling I hope I was happy for ruining things or saying I for those things to them. My instinct was to apologize and make a joke to forget about it, shove my feelings down but with my ex unfortunately he got worse and with the friends who stayed, I learn what I can share with them and when I did have to make a boundary, I remind them how I love them and care for them and I understand why they did what they did but I will not do the thing or let them say the thing to me. We did have to take some space between and I felt like crap, setting boundaries for the first times feels very crappy and scary but when we did get back to normality I seen a huge difference in interaction. Like one friend who was really good at stonewalling and she went into an anxious and blaming fit, I see now after placing a boundary and sticking with it that she has gotten better at it. It’s not totally fixed, it’s not realistic but for months I have seen the little chances where she doesn’t want to do it again. Other friends who continued to try and make me do things I don’t want to do or uncomfortable with, I have created distance and have made an agreement with myself that I will only interact in certain situations. Like I’m in my 30s, so is she and for some reason she like guys in their early 20s. Im not comfortable with that but since we both had the same abusive marriages with men she wants a partner yo live how she lives and though we have fun she doesn’t see that I’m my own person who have their own likes. I told her I don’t like bars, I don’t want to date and flirt with 22 year olds boy and i don’t want to constantly talk about my abuse which she knew I dealt with crippling emotional flashbacks from. She kept trying to talk me into doing those things and I start to keep conversation on insta instead of text and when she would ask me about hanging out I ask her about those things and if I see any of that, I tell her no thanks and I end the convo.

I completely disagree about the giving up with therapy. If you have a highly competent, licensed therapist, it can go a long way especially if your insurance covers it. The Daily Practice isn’t covered by insurance but therapy is and if you’re on sick leave for depression and anxiety because of ACE symptoms I would say your best bet is keeping a therapist AND doing the Daily Practice because if you’re serious about getting better, the combination of the two will help the jigsaw puzzles fall into place.

It's very personal, for many people therapy does help. Sadly for some of us it just doesn't. When you've tried so many different therapies over many many years, it becomes disheartening that it's not working and actually starts to set you back. You start to think maybe it's you, you're doing something wrong, or you're a special unique kinds of broken that can't be fixed. Hearing Anna say that it didn't work for her is very reassuring, it helped me realise that I wasn't alone. Also, it helped me realise that therapy isn't the holy grail, the be all and end all of healing. Yes, for some (perhaps the majority) therapy helps. But she's not wrong in saying that for her (and for some) it isn't useful.

As far as I got it, quitting therapy was not the advice in this video, but a bullet in Anna's personal list of what to do if she wanted to heal in a year/list of steps she took over the years. The ADVICE was to do the thought exercise and make our own list of steps to take. And she gave us an example list from her own experience and she started the title of this video as Your Unconscious Mind KNOWS What You Need To Do.. Wishing a good new year, with peace and blessings.

Just want to say to anybody who takes the ACE survey and finds their score low and then questions themselves and their experiences-remember, the survey can’t tell you how bad your trauma is. There are many factors that are not accounted for on the survey that could have a compounding effect on your experiences. Don’t feel shame if you don’t score high. Only you know how difficult things are for you, and the healing journey is great for all of us, so focus on that regardless.

Then an inexperienced and mean spirited 'manager' came along and fired me. I left shouting in my car: "Thank God I'm free of that place!" I would now choose to quit nine years back. I haven’t even been consistent yet (I’ve been ill and time of day has had less bearing on my awake hours than usual) and it’s amazing how helpful this has been. Minutes after writing and praying; I’m up cleaning, cooking, playing with my niece or walking the dog and I feel present. Thank you for walking us through the basics of what trauma is, what it causes and how to fix it. I’ll definitely be reading, ‘The Body Keeps the Score,’ and continue tuning in. I saw your talk with Emma (Therapy in a Nutshell) and I liked what you said about wanting to shout this from the rooftops! Thank you so much. I've been studying my way through my recovery for over 8 years. For the last 3 I have studied daily and am making great progress. But at times I wonder if I will free 'authentic me' and achieve my dreams before I die. I'm 64 and have CPTSD after a life time of abuse, but I've faced every awful fear of ending up isolated and alone and........................it is working! I am loads better and my life is loads better, but sometimes I just think I won't fully reach my aspirations. THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your journey. It's so good to have this filtered advice from you. I'm so glad I found you! I had already learnt so much and been able to direct other survivors to good source materials for study, it took me years to find the good stuff. And here you are, offering me the good stuff that I need! I was pleased to see that I am already doing 4 out of 10 disciplines. And I can see how all the others make sense to me. So this is how my recovery journey is going as of the 1st day of 2023... 1- Read them both last year! Are there other books on PTSD that are worth the read. Specifically dealing with relationship building and trust? 2- Did the daily practice/meditation all last year. Now transitioned to just Meditation. Using the DP skills I handle my fears quicker and in a much more positive way rather then letting them overwhelm me. 3- Relationships are a big issue for me. Still working on overcoming the fear, which is really triggering. 4- Have been embracing solitude since the pandemic started. I can distinguish when I'm isolating (internet addiction) and when I have healthy time alone- creating my art/gardening. 5- Stopped spending money on useless things. On a strict budget. 6- Due to a health issue I have embraced exercise - 2, 1 hour sessions a week plus daily stretching every morning. 7- Have become aware of when my thinking changes and doing a much better job at challenging it. 8- Working on being a better friend to the ones I've decided to keep. 9- Learned how to be a good working after getting my Mental Health Peer certificate in 2018. Now challenging myself to start my own biz. 10 - This is the tough one and really need to learn how to overcome my triggers when meeting women I am attracted too. Then overcome the rest of the dating issues.

I think you need to be measured with the therapy part. My first round of therapy gave me understanding of what was wrong with me and understanding my dysfunctional upbringing. The second round of therapy was me directing the therapy sessions and allowing the recent reamurgence of deep trauma which had to be addressed. Mourning, witnessing, the inner children who were the most traumatised. My therapist specialises in trauma and encouraged me to decide where each session should go. It was a really painful time but a process that was needed. I did breath work, journaling, trauma informed massage to release trapped trauma (from the ground up). I think as you said you were doing this before such books as dr Bessel van der kolk, Pete walker, Peter Levine, dr Gabor mate. I suppose each persons journey will be different. I’m 10 years into the process and have addressed my trauma and found love and compassion for myself.

Until watching your videos, I had *NEVER* heard that talking could do more damage than good. I was in talk therapy for years and for a lot of those years it did not good. It just stirred up the resentments. Now I do EMDR and talk therapy. However, EMDR has been significantly more helpful for me. Putting those dots from childhood and adulthood together and LEARNING from the trauma rather than just talking about it. It literally stimulates my brain to think deeper about it and get over that bridge to something better. I will take you advice to stop doing things that don’t actually help! I will stop spending money on talk therapy and do more EMDR, which I know is helping me - waste less time and money not healing efficiently. There’s a ton of wisdom packed in here. This is a video one could return to and savor.

You Anna, I love you, we need YOU!!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!! I'm on my LAST pack of smokes and I am so relieved frankly that I feel cozy at last about dumping therapy, I have gotten more in like two months of "crappy childhood fairy" than over twenty years of any other form of therapy! (Anna, thank you so very much)I was considering alanon, yoga, maybe martial arts for self defense, and maybe it would also help improve my low self esteem that feels so broken from, many years of narcissistic emotional and mental abuse. I am so very grateful to you Anna, you're heaven sent, truly you are a gift!!!

I found therapy life saving but what I wouldn’t do again is to spend so much time in spiritual groups that were supposed to help me process my trauma. I notice that the therapists I have been working in the last two years are not interested in my past but in helping me get unstuck and move forward. I wish I would have had something like the daily practice years ago. Thank you for the great content.

I love listening to your voice and videos. Your advices on this channel are better than any therapist's in my opinion. You see things really clear. I wish I heard these things when I was young, instead of doing all those mistakes. What you would change is so relatable. We all do the best we can and we all make mistakes. It's so brave of you to share. Wish you a lovely 2023.

Anna thank you so much for this concise list! I'm hyperfocused on intergenerational trauma for a few years and now consider myself an SME. But... This has caused me to become even more isolated and actually intimidating to everyone! I so needed this list to refocus on what I NEED TO DO. I so want to emulate you and bring psyche minded education and resources to people like me (without a qualification.) Soo close to starting a channel, but this video has reminded me not to get stuck in the education step and ACTIVELY heal myself before/while I forge ahead on fulfilling 'my purpose.' Thank you for the bottom of my heart for all you do, for yourself and for others. ❤️

I like how you touched on music. So much of the content of music is so negative and counterproductive. It really keeps you in old, sad, and despondent thinking and emotional patterns. Great point.

Thanks for mentioning that it is important not only to give the best out of you at jobs, but also leave the jobs that are dreadful to you! Or maybe to know when you've given the best of you at a job and gotten the best you could get (that it served its purpose and nothing else good will come out of it), and now is time to leave (when things start to get ackward and bosses or colleagues feel you are competition, for example)!

Dear Anna, I'm not quite sure I do have PTSD, I might have it partially, in any case my difficult events happened later on in my youth, early and late teenage years. I'd be interested to learn one day if that's even a thing... But in any case I'm benefiting from your advice anyway. I get a lot of inspiration. Thank you so much for all you do and a very happy new year to you too

Thank you for another excellent video. It has taken me ten years to do all these things with varying degrees of success until I found your channel and now suddenly it feels like success is speeding up. And something feels perfect about the order of your list; it’s like you can simultaneously plug away at the items, but when they get the official stamp of “done” (or “good enough” lol) they get resolved in this order. You are a gift.

love this definition of dating. ive always been suspicious of dating because it's often presented as a form of self marketing to the highest bidder. im much more comfortable seeing dating as a sort of pre-pre selection of generally nice people to get to know, which might, or might not, eventually lead to a relationship.
