That's what I thought as well, it might be for foreshadowing purposes... Another strange thing is that she wears her own shoes inside... And she keeps them on when she jumps off...
foefproductions What if the shoes were already there because she killed herself before the game started? The nightmares she has are sort of like a punishment. Also, some legends say that spirits are confined to their houses after death, so that's why she never leaves her room.
That's a great theory, I've never thought of that. But then, why would she kill herself over and over again? Off topic but I've had a theory once about Monoe and Monoko being her friends. Madotsuki witnessed Monoko's body being mangled in some sort of accident (supposedly a caraccident, hence the stoplight effect). Monoe blamed Madotsuki for everything while she was the culprit. Even in her dreams she can only smirk at her and leave her behind, leaving Madotsuki scared and alone. Madotsuki refuses to leave her room because of the guilt she feels.
foefproductions That's also pretty good. Another thing I think I've heard is that ghosts re-live their death. Or it could be guilt because Madotsuki caused the accident. We'll never know I guess.
Yume Nikki is one game that just makes me feel weird... It's so mysterious? Empty? Desolate? I dunno. I remember finding the dead man in the road and it was just bizarre. The music gives it that feeling a lot too.
This song has been stuck in my head for so long, I don’t wanna think about it because it makes me feel empty and sad knowing it plays after you commit suicide but i can’t get it outta my head. I feel the same about it as you, excluding the dead man.
2:58 you can hear the sound of something hitting the floor. Yume Nikki is a game that doesn't have a single dialogue but you can feel all the feeling through the songs and gameplay, the song that plays at the end of the game sounds like an ambulance siren. That was the tragic end of madotsuki...this game is so deep and emotional, my favorite game.
I think what makes Mado's end so unsettling is that she never says anything, expresses no emotions, her dream ended the same as they always did, and nothing really changed in the end. Poor girl, never felt more connected to such a void character.
@@nono974_fr5 omori spoilers I know almost nothing about omori but I saw a few seconds of the credits and it reminded me of yume nikki, probably inspired by it
“The autopsy report indicates no signs of a struggle upon being thrown off the building, indicating that she had killed herself. That woman is Madotsuki #####, Age ##. I did find some sort of dream diary in her room, but the last few pages are just scribbles of strange things and complaints of ‘being alone’. Must have locked herself away and went mad from isolation. Poor girl...”
Rawrfunkle, Ranter Extraordinaire most suicides don’t ever get to an autopsy. Even when the Character for Nopperabou indicates a Drug Deal, the effect shall indicate suicide by hanging. But where is only to find in the dreams...
There are three possibilities: -Furin: a bell used to back off the evil and keep peace around. Some of them could inspire these creatures' desing. -Ronin: A samurai without master. According to the Code of the Samurai, a samurai was supposed to commit seppuku upon the loss of his master. Those who didn't were considered as rogues and were condemed to wander on their own. As well, ronins worn bamboo hats to hide their faces as a sign of shame, same hats that the jellyfishes appear to wear. -Shinigami: spirits that lured people to death. In some traditions it was considered that if someone commited suicide, they were transformed into a shinigami that needed to posses another person, bring them to the place the shinigami died and make them to commit suicide there. Then, the shinigami could break free, and the person that diedh would be a new shinigami, repeating the cycle. This explained why there was a high rate of suicides in certain places, for example Aokigahara Forest; or the strange cheap prices of some houses and buildings where suicides happened before. These jellyfishes appear near places where deaths have ocurred, too. But hey, that's just a theory... A game theory.
Karen Gudiño I had in the other 100k+ Ending the reason for the Ghost(Faceless) is dealing drugs. Lost reputation? There you go. That is a Flower, a Plant. Signalizing where People used Drugs. There is another one on a Street, there, a Driver who was under influence (Taxi Driver in Turkey among using Pentobarbital..) and killed the one where you get the Streetsign. You may Dream of a Streetsign there...
@@julioagiri3354 Don’t ever say that, trust me it isn’t ever the best option. Even if things get rough, humans struggle but we always figure out a way to manage.
@@l2pnuub798 sometimes betrayal, and death in a game can be the best ending ever created. traumatize the user as much as you can and then you have won.
I wonder if the person who created this game was doing well, if he was having an emotional or psychological problem, having gone through some trauma or experiencing something that marked him badly, even suffering from some mental state like schizophrenia. I think it's unlikely that someone would dedicate themselves to a game so complex and full of strange images for nothing, a game that passes feelings of discomfort, tension, fear, loneliness and even making the person feel sick, I myself felt sick in several parts of the game because it was too uncomfortable to go through a room or even the music in the game was bad. The whole game I felt alone and lost, it is an incredible game, complex and that passes sensations that no matter how uncomfortable, leave you even more captivated to collect all the effects, go through events and even manage to get into all scenarios that the game has. Yume Nikki is a game that will definitely mark anyone who plays. Be it good or bad.
@@hahrhthuhrh3542 well it'd be pretty awful if they used kikiyama's involvement with yume nikki: dream diary as a selling point if he was actually dead
the author said he made this game thinking about his ex who commited suicide 1 year after they broke up, yume nikki isnt a history about his ex who passed in a tragic way but about every single person who suffer in silence
if i’m not mistaken... is there a yumme nikki manga/novel and the ending is that she just falls out of her bed? someone please confirm this I don’t want Madotsuki’s story to end like in the game 😭
More like that scene pulled a yume nikki. Although to be fair the whole song playing makes it more memorable, as much as i like the emptiness of yume nikkis ending song. Mashup when?
the ending music creeps me out but also makes me nostalgic for some reason? kinda reminds me of when people see those "Backrooms" and think they've seen them before. weird.
It creates a totally different picture for me. A quiet city, at night, with stalls dotted around the streets and warm white lights shining through the windows of skyscrapers. The music gives a neutral feeling, it could be sadness, or maybe satisfied happiness. I don't know.
I didn't played Yume Nikki, but I'm already prepared to play it, but, I thought that the end of the game isn't about madotsuki killing herself in real life, because the NPC's of the game appears when she hits the street floor... So, I thought madotsuki is already on a dream, and she dreams inside this dream, I thought she's afraid to get out her home because she's already afraid of creepy creatures like the one's who appears on her dreams, and, when she gets through all the adventure of the game and she can collect all the effects, she takes the decision to escape from that creepy world and wake into real life... Also, I thought madotsuki is already on a coma, and she lives her life in the coma, she's afraid of creatures that are outside her house, and after she met all the NPC's of her dreams, she takes the decision to wake up from coma, I don't know, I'll be just in weed or this is the real meaning of the game, at least, that's the meaning for me, sorry for the bad English, I speak taco and I have a very messy English

At first I was confused what happened because I'm extremely slow on things, but then it hit me. :/ >.< D': ;-; RIP Madotsuki your death will not be in vain. May you dream happy dreams forever now.
For a game so cryptic and all about symbolism this ending is so blunt and shocking. It flips everything you go through up until this point on its head and you have no choice but to look back on it all with this new perspective.
Dude, I'm super sad about this ending! Who knew madotsuki would kill herself? It took me by surprise... and honestly, by catching the effects you can create a theory, that being the real problems of madotsuki, your parents may have died or she left home early, and in time locked herself in her room, having only her dream world and her video game There are theories of the beautiful girl with blond hair having been someone she fell in love with, but as in the eyes of society this would be "wrong" she must have given up her love... finally, there are several other theories but at the moment I am forgotten. And honestly, I was very sad about this ending, but it's a sad reality that occurs, the last option... the SUICIDE.
One theory is that she has abusive parents, and that's just kinda the one I personally stuck with out of all the rest of them. So maybe she had an abusive family and she felt that there was no other way to get out of the situation she was in.
Theory: In the ending credit, we can see two jellyfish. I think it represent that the whole game was her dream, and she simply waking up after jump from the balcony.
Since it’s hard to tell expressions on this game. It looks like she’s like “ugh. I Laid all my eggs again, I have to commit suicide now. This happens every time”
I think In a way leaving it up to theories makes it more interesting I get what you mean tho. We barley know anything about her or her past or why she can’t leave, why she has these bizarre dreams and why she does this at the end. Im not done with the game yet but I did see a theory mention that maybe she has Severe anxiety and that’s why she won’t leave her apartment and I think that’s a good explanation. Like idk I’m gonna ramble a bit here but perhaps she went threw something rlly traumatic and cut off everyone and everything from her real life and remained in her room isolating herself for ages only to rely on dreams for company and it becomes some sort of obsession? I mean what else does she have to do other then play games. I think the places in her dreams could represent places or stages from her past but how she has interpreted them. The more she explores she ends up going deeper and deeper. I also think some of the npcs could represent people she once knew or even herself from the past. I think that once she’s got all the effects maybe she’s come to terms with everything involving her trauma (but not in a good way) and thus deciding to end her life. She might think that by doing that she will either be in her dream world forever or potentially it was a way to put an end to her dream worlds as she didn’t need to go back anymore. Okay 💀 sorry I rambled so much and I’m not even done with the game at all so I have no clue if any of that would even make sense but with how little backstory and plot there is I won’t worry too much bc it’s not like I’m gonna be either wrong or right.
I think the fact that Kikiyama barely says anything at all is one of the key points that make the game so interesting. It's a game all about exploration and interpreting what you see. If there was one clear definite answer to it all then I think the game would lose its allure.
Yume Nikki is one game that makes you feel weird… it’s so mysterious? Empty? Desolate? I dunno. I remember finding the dead man in the road weird and it was just too bizarre. The music gives it that feeling a lot too.
Events explained: 'crick' in her neck: sleep paralysis Stairway to the Sky: as mentioned, the Ending is resembling this, therefore again the flowers. that sad no death. Famicom Glitch: Refers to Scene of Emo, no words had been used as the creator faced you can release Caesar codex and still can’t compete a firmly stab. Words are obsolete I have been begging in 1k post for death and still alive. Severed Heads in the Sky: Despite the Char being female it takes any toilet. We have no words, no Sexes, Gender does nowhere apply. No Male/Female. Takofuusen: TRAP Syndrome. Referring to keep them alive if possible and have them to float in the sky. Believes it alters the Mind somehow. Yes, this game is distorted. Uboa: pff, too famous theory. The witch flight: prequel of the balcony fall. Assumption that Items must be content of the dream more than the balcony.
By the way guys the games not finished, the creator said they'd upload it... but they'd do it very VERY slowly... so if anything there could be multiple endings in the future... Or not and they were just thinking about adding more worlds...
It might be a Doujin fan page site- Kikiyama hasn't updated his website since 2008 and he hasn't even given his graces on Most of Project Yume Nikki (which is what you found) PYN was a fan project that wants to keep the game alive but the original is essentially finished :\
Wow, I just finished Yume Nikki and saw this for the first time. I was doing my best to figure most of the stuff out by myself (even though the exploration stopped being as fun near the end so I basically followed the wiki for the 3 or so effects I was missing), so I spent a full 8 hours on it. I really enjoyed it and I think it's a great, immersive and unique game. I'm not sure why, but I kinda thought the ending was going to be positive somehow. Like, I thought she was going to leave all her fears behind and start a new life or something (dropping the effects/eggs) at the end. That ending really caught me off guard, though. It could still mean that she's leaving those things behind, but the suicide angle makes it way darker than I expected. In any case, great game that I probably won't ever forget.
What if all these effects is what were what made Madotsuki... Madotsuki like when she was younger or in a time unknown to us these effects were key aspects of her character/personality and in the end she just throws it all away just to jump....
Did she commit suicide? Or was her apartment just as much a dream as anything else, and she chose to truly awaken? I think which side you lean on says more about you then the game.
It perturbs me how abrupt this ending is. You’ve gone through this game which has overall been fun, despite a consistently dark atmosphere and a few scary scenes. And then, she just fucking does it without any hesitation. In a way, it’s realistic. People who do this have had some happy times in their lives, and they may have friends they know and love, but they still decide that this is the way they have to go. It’s scary in how anticlimactic it is.
Personally, I think the theory about her having abusive parents is the best one, and maybe when she jumped, she thought there was a small chance she could survive and escape. I know it sounds a bit far-fetched, but it's just a theory, and its something I thought of one day.
i mean, i was searching for nikke and i wrote nikki but i delved into this game out of curiosity at that point and now i feel like the old times when someone was telling you "hey watch boku no pico, it's cool!" man wtf
Cordell Hankins nope that was me to. Like she committed suicide... woopdee doo who cares. Btw I only watched this bit so I didn't get attached to her like some people did
At least they shall had added Text to any Effect and Graphic. Don’t you matter, most just play it through and are as talkative as this game. The other take a Rape for granted, ok, if ya mean.. I don’t take money but I got it.
