Oh, so good. Yes, I think I love Chapter 2 even more than Chapter 1. 😆. Caring - either taken for granted or considered unimportant. I work in Engineering with two men who both have integrity, but we work as a team and I am the final “signer” on all the documents we produce. It’s rather hilarious at times, the interactions of our different personalities. One guy was previously an auto mechanic, and clearly his incentive in that context was speed and efficiency. He gets his work done very quickly -too quickly, because he knows I will carefully check his work. He has no incentive to do it right the first time. Often, there are 5 or 6 cycles of review and correction. The other guy agrees with me about the first guy, but second guy is very procedure oriented, and will always work from a template of prior work. More likely to get it right the first time, and yet, he simply doesn’t care to fully understand the details of the underlying analysis, again, he counts on me to understand it, but doesn’t welcome a full explanation that would increase his knowledge. But #2 guy does really care about language and grammar - which I value, yet we often have trouble communicating… he assumes I know what he means, but I often find ambiguity in his statements where he thinks he’s being very clear. And they both check each other’s work , and they check my work, too. And I also make mistakes, though I try to be correct and 100% clear in my statements. The best part is, we all love each other, despite these apparently ingrained personality differences.. We’ve come to know who we are, what to expect, and each in our own way, we care about the work and getting it right in the end. Pirsig has been my guiding star throughout my career. Again, I loved your comments here, and I will likely be churning out more overly long comments as you proceed through the book. Your comments about 21st Century and Internet are spot on -and I encourage those comments that relate to the present!! Thank you!
That's really interesting to hear your perspective through a lens honed by a lot of Pirsig. I thing integrating that perspective is fantastic, but it's using it that really counts. Thanks for your comment!
Here's a provocation about caring Sevilla. There are some tasks which are generally thought to be about caring - those concerned with healthy. And yet training is dedicated to manualising these into procedures and such. How do you think the attitude of caring does (or should) inform training of health practitioners (such as psychotherapists)?
bravo..the attitude is important, just caring about the problem. There is a light switch that is not working in my old house, installed new switch and led lights. Still not working and it is a failure of understanding the wiring. My attic space is hard to work in. I think about this problem everyday..minor annoyance. It will get fixed..
