I don't think Zapper was afraid of the grapes. I think he just wanted to have Jessie feed him his grapes fed to him. He has her pretty well trained ;)

There's a bunch of feral rose-ringed parakeets where I live - they look very similar to Zapper, if a bit smaller - and I can absolutely vouch for their camouflage. I've walked past trees without noticing anything amiss, only to have them explode into a giant cloud of screaming green birds :D

Even non flighted birds can fly with wind, so it's best to harness train your parrot, or keep them in a birdie backpack.

There's a lot of Rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri), very similar to this Alexandrine, living "in the wild" in my part of The Netherlands and also in other European (mainly urban) areas. They can be really fun to watch but they have become a real plague and can be very noisy! Does Zapper ever start screaming if he gets excited or wants to communicate something?

I have plans to purchase or rescue a Conure sometime this year and I'm trying to learn all I can. Trouble is, all the other videos on RU-vid concerning Conures, are uploaded by people whose voices are so annoying, I cannot listen to them long. Your's is a pleasant exception. Plus, I like your enthusiasm.

As I become an adult I'm seriously considering getting a bird and I'm digging into research to be ready before, but I have so many doubts about triming their feathers, I obviously dont want to prevent him from flying because doing that to a bird is cruel, but I don't want him to fly away and get hurt in case I take him outside. I haven't found a good answer online since everyone disagrees ... Could you share your thoughts or maybe even speak about it in one of your future videos ?
@MrSkarem
@MrSkarem 7 лет назад
I think the way they've done it to Zapper is good. Still able to fly around whatever distance he needs to fly inside, and if you were so unlucky that he fled outside you'd know he's within the area.
@abby1051
@abby1051 7 лет назад
I know I'm not Jessi, but I can still give some advice. Having a full flighted parrot develops many of their muscles, makes them more confident, and makes them happier. There is very few situations where having a non flighted parrot is better. You can easily harness train a baby parrot so that you can put a leash on them of sorts and take them outside. That way, you can have a flighted parrot and allow them to enjoy the outdoors.
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 7 лет назад
colasmulot There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing to trim or not. One of the first ones is if you're rescuing an adult or buying a baby from a breeder. It's great to let a baby fully fledge and learn to fly whether or not you'll eventually trim. It's good for their physical and mental health. I'd recommend trimming a rescued birds feathers as soon as you get them. This will prevent an accident during the initial bonding period, and gives you time to establish a trust bond while you wait for them to molt and regrow the flight feathers. Then you can see where you're at with your relationship and reassess.

I've had my cokateil and love bird for 10 years now. Both of them are basically real family and we've had them sence I was younger. I suggest trimming. Even if you trim, birds can still somewhat fly and especially glide. My cockatiel doesn't really like flying anyway (strange I know), but he's a very nervous bird (he was a rescue) and often when he flies out of panic, he ends up hitting against things, especially mirrors. Trimming is important to him as it avoids panic flying and self harm. Besides, he doesn't seem to mind as he prefers climbing stuff... As for the love bird, he much rather liked and prefers flying. We used to allow him full wings but then my dad left the fan on and well... He's lucky to be alive and we rushed him to the hospital with a broken wing. Sence then we've chosen partial trimming (only around half of the wings) so that he isn't to go that high and be hit agIn (even if he avoids fans now for obvious reasons.) Of course I'm talking about personal experience but I put the safety and the life quality of my birds before the whole 'oh it isn't natural!' argument. They're allowed to glide and fly around but trimming keeps them more safe (again, from my experience.)
@chrisdooley6721
@chrisdooley6721 7 лет назад
I keep all my birds wings trimmed because it gives me the freedom to take them outside more often. Leashes work as well, but most birds can bite through them pretty quickly if they are determined to do so. Most of the accidents vets deal with when it comes to pet birds are caused by flight in small spaces like houses. (ceiling fans, toilets, boiling water on the stove, windows and mirrors are all bird hazards + the risk of bird flying away) So it is a bit of a trade off, but I think my birds get more enrichment from not flying as much with shorter wing feathers than they would have flying normally.
