Thanks again Keaton for having me on. Zelda II is one of the best on NES. It was fun talking with you about it.

I have literally been saying for probably 10 years now that they need to remake Zelda 2 because it is extremely underrated and now that they've done the current Link's Awakening refresh, I'm pretty sure they could do something pretty great with the Zelda 2 RPG format

Hey I’m here for it! Zelda 2 in the modern day would be a bold decision but also a welcome one.

It's fun to see that dark souls clearly took inspiration from this game. In dark souls, you lose your carried xp on death as well, but it built a mechanic where you can get it back if you can get to where you lost it.

For sure. Losing items or gold on death is common but not XP, much less so reclaiming it. That’s pretty novel.

If you want some action like zelda 2 / castlevania 2, try Infernax. That game is so badass

A game I'm still working through, but highly recommend, is Pheonotopia: Awakening. It feels like what a modern Zelda would be if they did another 2D game that learned everything the rest of the series has to teach.

That’s a good idea to bring the experience system back. Nintendo is going to have to get really creative to both avoid “Breath of the Wild 3” and not make “another 2D Zelda”. Maybe a small scale 3D Zelda with an exp system is the answer, or at least a 2D game that occasionally goes 3D. (ALBW was great.)

Any meaningful integration of the rpg system would be welcome at this point. Zelda has mostly been about trying new things so I’m excited to see what they come up with.

i agree with brian on recommending the game. as much as i love Zelda 2 it is a game that wont hold your hand if your used to modern games

Yeah the juxtaposition is refreshing.

This game gets so much unwarranted crap. It's really fun, and takes a lot of bold risks that are in a lot of highly praised games today.

For real! I only knew this game for its negative reputation for the longest time. That’s a disservice.

Captaaaaain Keatoooon! It's interesting that you mentioned how you came across all of the dungeons! I had an entirely different approach to how I wound up beating the game for the first time! Man oh man, I wish I remembered to mention this during my interview, but I actually had a guide inside of an old Nintendo Power. I had literally cut the guide out and taped it to my bedroom door! 😂🥲 Boy does it pain me to suddenly remember something like that when it is too little too late 😂 The experience balance really is an enormous aspect of the game! You can clear the game without too much farming if you play 'thoroughly' i.e. not running past too many enemies, but if you want Link to be totally overpowered, you can totally level grind 💪💪 Igotkings is totally right. You can approach the game in so many ways adding lots of replay value! Fun interview as always!

Ahoy Omega! Hey, the beauty is that you're remembering it now -- it's never too late to invigorate your nostalgia!! It's funny, I saw someone call the enemies "random encounters" recently and was confused since they are on the map. True, you can avoid them when you encounter them but if you play the game naturally, you'll level up anyway. Many ways to play and they're all fun! Signs of a great game :)
