Zero FXS - This is my first little try of an electric motorcycle and my first impressions. I will do a follow-up video of my final thoughts of this bike as currently (13th July) I still have it. If you have any questions let me know and I address them in the follow-up video.
701 drag race will be in the next video so you can see how it faired :-)

There's an idea to get around the charge time problems... arrive at a fuel station and instead of waiting for it to charge, remove the flat battery and swap it for a fully charged one in the shop. I don't know if that is still being considered or not but it would be even quicker than using the pumps.

Hopefully oneday the battery swap at fuel stations will happen,as it would make it better, plus even if the batterys were good for 50 miles and cost you 5£s
@wolfpackpete6408
@wolfpackpete6408 2 года назад
@@Jafmanz it doesn't matter. It wouldn't be free to swap out the flat battery for a fully charged one. By the time a battery needs to be scrapped. The stations would've made a profit on the initial stocking of batteries. This would also help relieve customers worried about the cost of replacing a battery. The stations would take this responsibility by default.

That's not a bad warranty. Electric motors can last forever so 2 years isn't bad. It's the batteries that are shit expensive so 5 years for the battery coverage is great. We can use LEDs in most all states. California may be different but that's a different country.

Following those bikes at the end was quite therapeutic on the zero, you can really appreciate electric power in more ways than one, I honestly cannot wait till they smarten up the look of these things, give huge amounts of power to rival the 200hp stuff on the road but with a 400+ mile range for touring then I will be in the queue.

Nice vid LC. I have a vested interest in Electric bikes, as I have an alter-ego that owns an electric car. Actually I'm on my second EV now. As you rightly point out, the accelaration is addictive! Since I know most of the pros and cons of EV ownership, my only issues at the moment with E-Bikes is the range and the cost. Once they've made those 2 things a little more acceptable then I'd consider one. And based on the claimed range of 70 miles of that bike, I'd be interested to see what a "spirited rider" such as yourself gets out of it. Because I don't get anywhere near the claimed range in my EV with my heavy right-foot! :D If you ever get another E-Bike to test and you need any help understanding the charging side of things (because it's a bit of a minefield) - let me know.

would you prefer regen on a separate lever so you can control the amount/severity easier, rather then waste heat using disc brake to feel safe stopping. i also think a regen lever would be safer for takeoff (regen lever held in till setting off so no creep if throttle accidentally blipped)
@LambChopRides
@LambChopRides 6 лет назад
No I think its fine on the brakes, you can adjust the amount by using the custom mode setting. I had it at maximum which felt like you were applying a little brake when you came off the throttle. I would like to see a throttle map selection option to change the throttle pickup characteristics as its very soft standard. That will keep the wheelie speed freaks like me happy :-)

Of course I can't know for sure having no experience, but it just SEEMS to me like even an electric motorcycle MIGHT benefit from some type transmission and clutch setup ....I mean if you think about it HAS TO have some type of "transmission" where the raw definition pertains to any sort of gear reduction/transmission set up ...for a chain drive simply referring to it's equivalent of a "countershaft" (which might not specifically apply but you know what I mean) sprocket and the bigger rear wheel sprocket arrangement ...that ratio the builders chose ...in other words WHATEVER arrangement of gears or sprockets or belt and pulley etc that simply transmit (hence single gear "transmission") the power from WHATEVER type motor to the rear wheel ....Of COURSE some kind of thinking went into the engineering and choice of ratio! OF COURSE one ratio would not be as a good as another ...somewhere somehow there has to be a compromised determination for what was chosen in the "transmission" of power from motor to rear wheel ....THEREFORE I don't see how anyone could claim that "a transmission is entirely not something you will find on an an electric powered vehicle"....Then we could discuss any potential benefit of a clutch on an electric vehicle ....well let's think....what if a fairly small motor is chosen with limited power, MIGHT it be a benefit to have a clutch where the throttle can be pinned to high RPM with clutch in and then dump it to experience full powered RPM all at once? Say to lift front end over and obstacle etc??? I don't know I am just thinking

@CrazyPanda688
@CrazyPanda688 6 лет назад
This is the common misconception about electric vehicles. They have a torque curve just like an internal combustion vehicle, only it’s reversed if you were to put it into a graph Your standard ICE bikes have low torque at low RPM with peak torque usually coming in somewhere in the middle/top of the Rev range depending on the engine layout. Electric vehicles have 100% torque available at 0-RPM, but it drops off massively as the RPM’s increase Also, no wheelies= no fun. Until we see an electric bike that can compete with a modern litre bike in both performance and price, then we will talk
@carlosandleon
@carlosandleon 6 лет назад
Sam Kent the trend goes away from literbikes though. If its light and has 30 - 50 hp then that's the perfect formula
@LambChopRides
@LambChopRides 6 лет назад
Oh good info regards torque Sam didnt know that and makes sense as torque does drop as speed increases.
@CrazyPanda688
@CrazyPanda688 6 лет назад
Lamb Chop Rides no worries. I hope that didn’t come off as snobby or anything. I’m just massively into my cars and bikes, and electric vehicle fans often use the argument “but they have 100% torque available all of the time” which isn’t true. No doubt they’re a blast to ride though, prices just aren’t competitive enough yet for what they’re offering
@thorstambaugh1520

Hi Lamb Chop Rides Could you ask Zero UK what their understanding of artificial noise generation compliance rules is (if any) to their motorcycles in the future for sales in the UK? For electric and hybrid newly sold 2019 cars, EU laws will require after July that typically a directional white noise will be output below 20 kph so alerting pedestrians etc.

The difference is that while the petrol bike makes its rated hp at some mad rev, the electric makes full power from about half its maximum speed. If you ride your petrol bike at redline all the time, it will feel quicker than an electric. If you ride your petrol bike in the middle third of the rev range, then an electric feels similar to a petrol bike with two or three times the rated power.

All Zero models have Regen Braking. When you let off the throttle it will use the heat created by the rotor and convert it into electricity that is sent to the motor. You wont get any extra range on the highway but I've seen people actually gain range with inner city riding. All depends on how you ride.
@firebladerider7050

@markparker5585
@markparker5585 6 лет назад
As well as Eco (restricted throttle response/power but max motor braking/regen) and Sport mode (max throttle response/power but low motor braking), there is a Custom option that can be set via the app to any level of throttle and regen you want. Personally, on my test rides a couple of years back I preferred Custom set to max power and max regen. It then doesn’t take long to get the hang of balancing the two just with the throttle itself. It’s no different from coming up to a roundabout in low gear on a normal bike and either easing off the throttle or shutting it off quickly to control your engine breaking and entry speed. The main difference is on the electric bike, you have that same choice even at higher speeds. With a fairly neutral throttle, even at high regen, you can effectively coast.

Hydrogen bikes (if we are talking about Hydrogen fuel cells) would still be electric bikes. All the fuel cell does is charge the batteries that run the electric motor. I’m skeptical if fuel cells are a practical proposition for bikes, and I think bike choices in the midterm at least will be either petrol or pure electric with a more energy dense battery pack. There’s not a lot of space to cram additional gubbins in a bike frame, and fuel cells add a fair amount more complexity.

Surely they can create a sound that you could choose because there will be so many smidsys in built up areas especially with pedestrians. The days of hearing a bike screaming away in the distance are slowly getting closer.When will governments ban internal combustion vehicles (for private use)due to noise/pollution and end an era? It happened to horses,steam power next will be the fossil burning internal combustion engine.....☹️☹️☹️

Liam Vickerman No you miss the point, they had their time and technology passed them by.Canal boats,steam engines are still around but obsolete only for recreation and history.The same is coming for fossil fuels.Until something new is invented we will be stuck with electricity.If they can develop a new type of battery or develop hydrogen we are stuck until the next big step.

I had someone allmost back in to me in a car park as I came past. You do need to be super aware while riding it.
@markparker5585
@markparker5585 6 лет назад
Lamb Chop Rides you just have to not assume everyone has heard you, which is actually a pretty sensible attitude to take generally. No different to walking or being on a pushbike. Even many modern petrol/diesel cars are practically silent at very low car park speeds. If I don’t get eye contact, or see some positional road change to indicate another vehicle has seen me, I just assume they don’t know I’m there, and drive/ride accordingly. Too many riders seem to only think “loud pipes save lives”, rather than the perhaps more true but less catchy “loud pipes make you complacent”

Agreed Mark, this guy was parked though and just reversed out FAST, couldnt even see anyone was in the car as was a group of parked cars. I should have given more room to the cars tbh, but if I had been making exhaust noise he may not have just reversed without looking as "may" have heard me providing he radio wasnt at full volume or was on the phone haha

The government are banning the fossil fuel cars by 2040 will this include bikes as well! I could see myself using something like this for commuting on but you couldn't tour on one of these, battery tech is getting better but it still isn't there just yet. Belt drives last for ages unless a stone goes between you pulley and belt which can pop a hole in your £££ belt.

too high.for people height of 5.9 it's inconvenient. if we sit on it our foot won't reach the ground..lastly if I'll buy it.and register it here in my country.it doesn't know what to put.if 125 cc or 150cc coz motorcycle here are regarded as cc.not 8000watt.police here are idiot they consider 8000watt as big bike like 1500 cc it's an electric bike.theres no comparison with that.. I had review it..it can travel back and fort from work to home.for 4 day before charging it..
