Great work! For anyone like myself who needed help following, I believe the technique described with the shadow lines is also called "blacklining" or recess shading. It's a great way to reinforce the different areas and textures if a minis and help it POP

Taking photos as you go along is a great idea, you can get so focused on doing particular parts when you take a photo and see it all together your like damm that needs work

Miniature painting is one of those hobbies where learning never ends. Always a new method, paint, or brush to master. So I’m going to say 2 become 1 is my favorite. Cheesy, but I got to stick with the best.
Another option to get a good idea of how highlights and shadows would work, would be to prime the figure black and then do a vertical drybrush with a white
Keep on at it! Mev is cool to watch for techniques. I've learnt to step away from washes a bit, or use them in a weaker application (find it dulls down the color too much) The strength in glazes is a better method, I find. I subbed, try some more minis and build those skills!!

The best advice that helped me was always go one shade lighter in highlights and one shade darker in the shadows then you think is right. everything looks way brighter under a strong light.
Vast improvement, very impressive, much wow. Brave of you to use full body acrylics, the thinning...the thinning. But also pigmentation. Also, Yay on liner brush. First praise, now feedback. So on the "finding the highlights" your light trick isn't crazy, obviously it worked. I've seen others do it, but with a lamp. Another way to do Zenithal without an airbrush and (maybe with what you have) is as follows: Get black primer, or if it's a bones/preprimed black paint. Thin the paint. Slop the black on. Let dry. Get a makeup brush (dollar store works, I just got the cheapest brand of a full set of makeup brushes from amazon. Then I got different sizes and shapes.) Pick an angle you want the light source to be, and then dry brush from that source. You can use stipple, or circular, or sweeping brush strokes. Just depends on the effect you're going for. (Sorry, it's hard to describe it, more of a visual but like, just get bases to see. Or you probably already know with your arty background). The "Light" will throw "shadows" via your brushing angles. Another trick, cheap wet palette. (Wet palettes help keep your paint fresher for the session and thin them) 1 plate, a bunch of kitchen roll or paper towels, and baking parchment paper. (the non waxy kind). Put the kitchen roll/paper towels in the plate, soak the hell out of them, float the baking parchment. The parchment will be a membrane, and allow the water to seep in, in a controlled manner. It keeps the paint hydrated and thinner. It also makes it less...argumentative? The feel is different, it's sometimes easier to push around the model. And of course we'd love to see more collabs. I continue to learn a lot from your colleague, her and Brent and Guy and the dude from Artis Opus have had a direct impact on my mini painting style.

Definitely should be proud of your progress! But don't listen to those "anti wash" fools. It's not liquid magic, or talent in a bottle. It's just another tool in your arsenal. If you want to slap wash all over your mini, do it! Unless you're planning on winning a golden demon, anything that helps you get your minis looking decent is fantastic.
We improve by moving forward, trying news things, pushing ourselves outside our comfort, but in all having fun because that is what art is bearing a piece of ourselves and enjoying the process of doing it, without that its just business or manufacturing which is't as fun or enjoyable.

That's how you know things are about to get serious Glad you're improving and enjoying yourself with the hobbie =) Miniatures with that shading technique with the dark lines give me comic book vibes, mostly the coloring style they had in the late 90s and early 2000s
@@619Slipk haha way less cool (although I love X-Men). I was super into Sabrina and Pokémon comics. Once in a blue moon my dad would also convince me to pick up some Silver Surfer related comics.

Nice job :-) I think you would really like Marco Frisoni here on RU-vid he is amazing and id suggest looking back at his older videos first if you do as he builds on the things he has done over time so you can try and learn as you go along with him :-) its very subtle he has helped me alot the last two years or so :-) (he doesn't do videos every day or week so its not like 10 million videos ha but over the last while it has been once a week or so)
