My name is Sheldon, a Motorcycle rider from Manchester, UK I ride my motorcycle to visit interesting places around the world and video them to share my experiences with the channel. My current bike is a 2017 BMW R1200 GS TE which I've rode through many countries. I ride great roads that are good for other bikers, i usually end up at a famous landmark or something with a story attached to it.
Please subscribe, its free and helps my channel grow 😊 you never know where i might end up next!
You seem to forget that this is a hard international border. Thanks to Brexit, it will even get more difficult when ETIAS is in place. Also in Folkstone you can only enter the tunnel via an exit of the motorway. For some reason you turned around at the first roundabout instead of young straight on. It seems you entered the address of Euro tunnel offices in your sat nav because that's were you ended up.
Riding the Großglockner in this weather is a waste of money. Paid a bunch of money, saw nothing, missed the Edelweißspitze and Franz-Josefs-Höhe. Next time when the weather is nice!
You've got that Merlin mesh jacket same as me, I've yet to dare go touring in it. I was going to wear a heated vest and a lightweight down jacket under it with a waterproof to go over it but seems a faff , i'm sure i would appreciate it when it gets hot, it's mainly my arms that suffer when it gets chilly. How did you get on with it and how did you layer up, would be interested to know , i've tried so much crap to find the perfect touring jacket i doubt it even exists .
The jacket was comfy to all day ride in, its made to let air flow and it does so you need a windproof over layer when in colder weather. I wore and under armour zipped top underneath when it got a little chilly and if it rained i wore an Oxford Rainseal over jacket which is windproof too. The combination did work, but as you say changing layers each time you stop is a faff. Ive since bought a Klim Carlsbad jacket and pants which is better for all year riding but you still need a fleece under it in cold weather. in hot weather the merlin jacket would be better as the air flow through the vents on the Klim is poor.
The short break turned into a long one! i did a few videos and lost all the footage when i upgraded from windows 10 to 11 and it all went wrong! since then ive been working on the house and not really been anywhere other than work on the bike. I have some rides planned though so i will soon start posting again 👍
Credit to you for sharing this. Many of us have been there, but it can’t be stressed enough - stop riding and take a good break! Your head will be in the wrong place to be carrying on. Relive your experience away from the bike.
Years ago my wife and I rode a Kawasaki Z750L loaded with camping gear from Chesterfield, Derbyshire to Bala Lake at night in the pissing rain all the way there. We arrived at about 9pm to be told "no bikes allowed on here!". My wife was nearly in tears wondering what we could do. It was only when the owner realised we were a fairly respectable married couple that he let us pitch up. He put us right outside his office so he could 'keep his eye on us'. He said he'd had no end of trouble from 'bikers' getting drunk and revving their bikes. We walked into Bala and saw nothing but drunken students making the bikers look like nuns.
Another GS 1250 rider who can’t handle anything more serious that flat tarmac. That surface is nothing. Try sending it at 40mph down a cross country disused farm track on stock tyres. I’ve done it and have plenty of videos on instagram to prove it. I ride a Tiger 900 Rally Pro.
I know this isnt about Dorsoduro 750 and that bike is also a twin, but I got an offer and I am wondering if you would think it would work for 10-12 hours touring. 80% of my riding is twisties in the mountains of Norway. But I also do long touring to Sweden and down to Europe. I want something light and nibble but also kind of stable. Is the air protection bad?
It depends on the person, the more you ride the more you get comfortable on the bike. Most bikes are similar these days, i find standing on the pegs for a couple of minutes every couple of hours helps a lot.
Good honest video with lessons to be learned. Maybe not constantly chatting to someone while riding difficult roads would be a good idea? Way too much of your focus is inevitably on the person behind you, rather than completely on the challenges ahead.
My late father who was a teen during the war said once to that he was always amazed that people volunteerd to get there head blown of in a strang country . Never forget he told me ,that people like that excist
Greetings from N.Ireland.superb series and your sense of Northern humour is brilliant !! We have been lucky ( me and sat nag on the back) to do over the years most what you done, but nice to see from another persons point of view !. You mentioned the battle of Anzio my Father was a Royal Navy Able seaman on the landing craft that put the British troops on the beach, he then went on to the D-Day landings in June that same year being in the first wave to hit Juno beach putting the Canadians on the beach. He told me Anzio was worse than D-Day in his experience. When I listened to you in the commonwealth cemetery you had me welling up also. He passed in 2017 aged 95 good innings considering !! Regards Robert & Carolyn
Apologies i did reply when you posted but just realised it didn't save? Fair play to your father, he must have seen some awful things. probably gave him nightmares. If i could change anything, it would have be that my grandad made it home... mostly for my father and his brothers who missed him dearly all their lives.
Yes, new videos coming soon. Just need to edit them, I've had computer problems 😒 I tried to upgrade my PC to Windows 11 and lost all date on 2 hard drives, basically all the channel stuff so having to start again from scratch.... nightmare! Will explain in the first Video 👍
Have you ever tried a pin lock visor on the inside of your helmet to deal with it fogging up? I put one on my new helmet and it seems to help stop the inside fogging up.
Hello Sheldon. Only just found your channel but I've have been binge watching ever since. Gutted for you with the weather you had on that Euro trip, I thought that sort of thing only happened to me. ;-) Anyway, I'm up to date with watching now and looking forward to any new videos released. Keep going lad you're doing great. P.S. Nice to hear from someone with the same accent as me!
New videos wont be long now, its still wet but its warmer. Ive invested in some new Klim gear too which is amazing in the wet. Should be though, it cost about the same as my house 🤣
blink and you miss it lol to be honest i saw the bride and thought it was for walkers 🤣 I drove on looking for a road... ahh well i know now, i also know to stay in a wooden hut next time too... midges are barstewards 👍
I was based just up the road from korbecke.British 3rd Armoured div.HQ. shit posting, but the mohne made up for it in summertime😂thankyou for your vid.
Very funny episode sherlocks 😂😂😂. Yes if you don’t know you cross the border like its nothing. About the priority, the signs on the road are there only to decorate the speedbumb. So that you see them quicker. Nothing less, nothing more. At the end it only for lower your speed. It worked 😊as I have seen. Thanks for sharing the good work 🎉
Nice to see our dutch country trough the eyes of a English man. In Oosterbeek a village near Arnhem there is a famous but small museum about the fights and situation during the ww2 called airborn museum.
The Netherlands is a beautiful place and somewhere i will definitely be visiting again. Sadly on this trip i was just passing through, i would like to explore your country properly 👍
Still catching up & I am glad to see you finally got some good weather. Just a shame about that camp site. Back in 1988 I decided to go to the Bol d' Or Paul Ricard with some mates . As it closer to Sept they all gradually bottled it , none of us had ever been abroad on our bikes before , so determined to go I set off on my own. Prior to leaving everyone told me I would have no trouble finding a camp site in France so that sounded great. Anyway cutting it short I got totally lost and every time I saw a sign for a camp site I would ride to it and find it closed. Yes there were plenty of camp sites but most of them weren't open in September so I really understand how you were both feeling. Cutting the story short I ended up camping in a public park for a night and when I got to the race circuit the toilets were as bad or even worse than what you had. Just for the record I too spent most of my time riding in the rain along with The Mistrel winds I heard never heard of before. But as they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Subsequent trips have been so much easier. Looking forward to catching up on your Scotland trip soon.
So much to learn on everyone's first bike trip abroad, the main thing is our expectation that the weather will always be sunny or dry. i took some things with me that i didn't use too which was a waste of time. Next time i will be better prepared, and places to sleep will be planned rather than turning up unannounced, at the very least make a phone call and book first thing in the morning, before travelling to somewhere that's closed 🙄
You got through safely which is the main thing, easy to lose concentration when your focus is diverted. Eurotunnel normally pretty good with bikes and let you take earlier crossing if space available.
Interesting seeing the P&O ferry, I have a return trip booked on the Stena Line from Harwich to Hook of Holland (basically Rotterdam). Cost £292 for single rider , bike and an outside cabin. Like a window to the outside so I can check the weather without having to go on deck. Came back from Europe on this ferry last year and the cabin was definitely bigger. Not bothering with food as I will get some once in Holland, get on board later as well so will eat in Harwich before sailing.
Couldn't think of worse way to bike trip tho more expensive bnb.all the way sod put tents up down again and carried all stuff... just me tho others love it😊
