Thank you Queen! I am just going over your video and it is so good to hear someone who has been on these committees. I am going to edit my statement now, and keep all your points in mind.
Some people actually study a lot but fail undergrad because they didn't learn how to study effectively and assimilate information quickly... Undergrad is a different ball game to high school and you dont have a teacher guiding you, you dont have a teacher explaining difficult concepts. In university you have to be disciplined and process information quickly. Another thing particularly for me is this comparison Assumption that some people are smarter than others. Unfortunately this bias is reinforced with the IQ test and so some people feel that they are inherently dumb even before taking the IQ test, this makes such individuals put less effort than the effort needed for them to succeed. Another thing is Foundational knowledge... If you didn't really learn the foundations in your secondary school you will struggle at undergrad. Lecturers and teachers alike also have a role to play in this issue by stereotyping that a student is more academically gifted rather than putting more emphasis on effort... It can really go a long way in dampening student that put in the effort but need to take more time to really understand the material Finally in Africa there is so much believe in Christianity and some people will be praying for hours instead of reading their books... They may think that why they are performing poorly could be attributed to some supernatural factors
