Thank you for the video. It was very helpful. Is there a way to make the hole bigger? We are on turn #3, and I cannot seem to get the key in this hole.
I never try to expand someone tha old as the palate has matured and the 2 halves have grown together thus a traditional expander no longer works safely or properly, unless a surgical assist is done or screws are used to anchor it to the bone itself and not the teeth.
I'm sorry to hear that. It's not common but does happen to some patients who w/out knowing keep pressing their tongue against it. It will eventually get better!
@@drdougortho I see. Thanks for responding. I’m wondering what’s better for the expansion and pressure? Like does it help to have it at the top bent like that or is it preferred for the arc of the expander to be more wide an thus floating?
i wish i had that, now it like i cant even eat anymore. the jaw expander then looked actually good and you could chew/eat and stuff but now i got mine and they totally changed the style and now i cant eat
Hi I’ll be getting this in a few weeks. I’m autistic and struggle very much with sensory issues. Will this be especially hard for me and how can I make it easier??
We've treated many kids with sensory issues, and while the first week or so may be tough, you should get used to it! You just have to go through it. But talking as much as possible early on helps you to adjust faster. So drive your parents crazy and talk and sing a lot the first few days!
Not sure what your concern is here. You want to increase the surface area. Microetching is best, but messy, extra fine diamond is next best and easy and takes a few seconds and isn't messy. Zero issue here
Trust Jesus he is our Lord and saviour he died for you trust him confess “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart he was risen from the dead by God and you will be saved Jesus loves you Amen 🙏
it varies, it will start to close a week or 2 after you stop turning the key... but it won't close straight. depends how fast your orthodotist puts your braces on after.
flossing is hard with braces but the "platypus flosser" makes it easy. If you do it a few times a week and brush well and use a flouride rinse, you should be ok
@@drdougortho hey man. ive got another question if you dont mind. is it normal for my tongue to burn when using mouthwash? does that mean im using too much?
My top teeth are fine but my bottom teeth are a bit crooked. Does the top palate correlate with bottom palate or would I need one specifically for bottom palate?
There is no way to expand your lower jaw, it does not have a suture like your palate (which is the roof of your mouth). The palate should only be expanded when it is too small to fit your lower jaw, not simply because there are crowded teeth.
I assume you mean the bonded retainer i showed here? They are more prone to break, and sometimes there is NO ROOM to fit one on/patient may bite on the wire when it is behind the upper teeth. We use the only when we can fit it on safely and usually only when indicated (when a patient originally had a large diastema/space between the upper central incisors, which is likely to relapse. Either way we STILL recommend a clear removable retainer to sleep as well.
Wow thank you for a quick response, that is my concern. My two top teeth will not remain closed, my ortho wants me to wear my retainers which I do everyday however I am highly concern about my two upper teeth reopening.
Do you have patients that got it on and just couldn’t do it so they got it off? Does every orthodontist have the option for removable ones for kids who can’t stop choking?
I've NEVER had a patient in my 18 year career, that didn't eventually get used to in in every way! Some take a day or 2, a few will take a week or so, but every kid has adapted and done great! Removable ones just don't give you true expansion of the palate, despite what some may say.
im 13 and need an expander also have one tooth on the right side of my mouth that never came in and also one of my baby tooth is wiggly would i need surgery
Thanks for your opinion... oddly enough so many found this so helpful because you actually have to do it IN THE MOUTH... and we have other videos showing an expander on a model/outside the actual mouth, so I'm pretty sure this video is not pointless.
3 weeks and i get a space between my front teeth! I have it for 6 weeks now and i still haven't seen any progress at all, my whole mouth is still the same, but I'm an adult I'm 28 years old. Is it normal to not notice any difference during 6 weeks ?
@@drdougortho u said in the video 3 weeks to get a space, and i was surprised so i used exclamation point 😅, mine is in my mouth for 6 weeks and still nothing changed
@@jamilnabha you are turning the key everyday for 6 weeks and no space opened? I'm not surprised because you are an adult with a mature palatal bone. I've never seen a palate at that age split w/Out surgery. Unless your orthodontist is doing something different I'm not aware of, I'd address your concerns with him/her.
Has this patient had surgery? Or is this a technique used only in kids to assist the maxilla to grow wide enough so that they later won’t need surgery?
@@drdougortho I see. Well, I wish someone had done this on me when I was young. I’m 18 and have just had maxillary and mandibular widening surgery. And I’m also scheduled for a BSSO in a year.
Idk what my orthodontist did but they put brackets on my bottom molars a week ago, the wire attached to them are two completely different wires than the one connected to the rest of my teeth. They’ve come out of the brackets on my molars, is there any way I can put them back in?? I just got it fixed last wednesday (3 days after they put the wire and brackets on) and they already broke again. I’d rather not have to drive to my orthodontist again cause it’s about 1h 20m drive for me. They come out so easily too, I was eating soft foods when they broke out of the bracket. I can’t eat anything harder than a sandwhich because I recently had a jaw surgery (overbite correction)
I wish I knew exactly what is going on here. I'm sorry as without seeing what is done I can't offer advice, other than it should not keep popping out. Congrats on being past your jaw surgery though! That's a big deal and will be worth it once you are done! Just make sure your orthodontist knows how far you have to drive and how frustrating this is for you! Best of luck!
the plastic for that kinds probably is split right in the middle with the hole between. Different style but works the same, but can be hard to see the hole. Sorry, wish I could be more help!
@@HaverBrickzITD when done at the right age and activated properly, there is usually little to NO pain. Food will get caught sometimes however, and your orthodontist should have shown you how to clean it properly. Some kids press their tongues against it w/out knowing and get an indentation on their tongue which goes away eventually.
@@drdougorthomy 10 year old is recommended for this to be applied though she has a little crowding and only about half an inch difference when her top row bites the bottom. Is 10 a good age or too young?
