I'm established at my site for the night and go over some of my gear and setup.
I talk about my Therm-A-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad, Katadyn Hiker water purification system as well as the gravity filter system. I also setup my tarp as a shelter, but that didn't go quite as planned. All this and more... thanks for checking it out!
This is on a 5 day solo canoe trip with my dog Lucy in Algonquin park that I did the in middle of August. It was a great over all trip where I go through some tips & tricks, review some gear, try out a new tarp pitch, see beautiful wildlife and get through some thunderstorms in the night. I hope you enjoy it!
Much love,
Troy

All that was missing with the morning coffee was the herb. Algonquin = paradise on earth.

Lou supervising fire starting there for a bit, haha. I don't know what it is, but coffee made outdoors on a hike or camping trip always tastes better! Looking forward to next in the series!

Great vids Troy, thanks for sharing. I just cut the rubber off of the handles on a similar pot set I have, I have a leather glove on anyway for cooking over fire so I don't burn your hand on the metal handle. I love my Seagull/ Zebra Billy's, but agreed a bit heavy.

I use the MSR autoflow gravity filter. It has two filters. You reverse the connection of the second filter in the middle of the two hoses to backflush a clog to clear it out. Love the thing. Besides I'm getting old, my pumping water days are over.

I haven't had the same problem with my MSR gravity filters, but I always bring a spare so that I can backflole them when they start to get clogged, which is very infrequently. If you want a pot with no handles, the Vargo Bot is a very nice, albeit, pretty expensive, piece of kit that can do double and triple duty: You can carry water in it and I made a cozy for mine, so also functions nicely as a thermos. I am also going to experiment with baking bannock in it: Put it on its side with the top barely screwed on, and the silicon gasket removed, then put coals on it. I will cook the bannock in silicon muffin liners. I think if you ask Vargo nicely, they might even give you one.

I went back to my hiker as well! It just works better. The Mors pot is a light weight pot with a bail for hanging over a fire. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the suggestion of the Mors pot. I looks nice but I would miss the frying pan lid. I've also rigged up a different handle for the LiTech pot in this video so I can easily put it in and take it off the coals to boil in the fire. I'll be doing a full review of it, with the mods, in a future video. Thanks for watching Tom.

sawyer mini water filter, in a gravity fed system , super lite, fill a bag with water and let gravity do the work while you do other stuff

@MaddyTheGoose 7 лет назад
Yeah, I just picked one up a couple of weeks ago. I like how you can use a squeeze bag or just let gravity do it's thing. Looking forward to trying it out in the field.

Hi, Instead of the Trangia, do you think a Sterno could do the job? thanks

Hey Troy, big fan. Your triplogs are the gold standard. Just wondering about all this water filtration business. I've done 100+ days in Algonquin and I've never brought a pump. Do you use it on all lakes or just river travel? As long as its a non-motorboat lake i just pull from the middle, and I've boiled maybe a few times on a narrow river or when there is an advisory. Tastes delicious.

When I'm in the middle of a lake I'll sometimes just fill my bottle with no filter. I'm sure you could get away with not having one, as you've proven, but I just do it to be safe. Also want to avoid any pollution issues. Thanks for sticking with me over the years!

When I first starting guiding canoe trips at 17 yrs old I slept on a plastic sheet with no pad. At 32 I needed a 1/2" closed cell foam pad and within a few more years graduated up to a 5/8" pad. When I hit 48 I discovered Nemo insulated inflatable pads. It has become a necessity to use a Nemo now. I couldn't sleep well on anything less than that 3" of airy comfort. Life has a way of creeping up on you. I cant imagine how I ever slept without any pad in my late tees/early twenties. Looking at that Z Rest of yours makes me cringe. I stopped using my heavy water pump years ago and use a Sawyer Squeeze filter nowadays. It works great and is very light. The weight I saved lets me justify carrying my Nemo pad.

Hey Tory, Why did you stop using the GSI hard anodized pot set you had in your video's from years ago?
@MaddyTheGoose
@MaddyTheGoose 7 лет назад
Good question, I'm still quite fond of the GSI set and will continue to use the 2L one when I go with other people, they really are great pots but a few things led me to the Primus LiTech kettle/pot. First off, the weight. I've been lightening up my pack lately and cutting back the ounces while keeping things durable and not going titanium due to the poor heat distribution. This pot comes in 2 ounces lighter than the GSI, it doesn't sound like much but when you give yourself a hard line for your base pack weight, every ounce helps. I'm looking to keep that weight at 25lbs or less. It's also taller so not as easy to spill and I like that I can keep handles on the lid/frying pan and pot at the same time rather than sharing one handle. Not a big deal, but it's the little things. It also has a smaller base so that means a smaller stove holder (my hobo stove) to sit on. I also like that the lid functions as a frying pan, as the GSI pots do. In the end, I wasn't itching to get rid of my GSI, I just found something a little better for my purposes. I’ll be doing a full review of the Primus LiTech in a future video so stay tuned and thanks for watching!

Is that the same Bark River knife you used to carry?
@MaddyTheGoose
@MaddyTheGoose 7 лет назад
Actually, it's a Fallkniven F1 blade with a custom handle I made using the same technique used to make micarta which is compressing material together, injected with epoxy resin. You can see the steps I went through to make the handle here goo.gl/1x9fY5.

Didn't back flushing the water filters help at all? My platypus filter has the same issue but back flushing it always restores the filtering to its normal speed.
@MaddyTheGoose
@MaddyTheGoose 7 лет назад
Too be honest, I didn't spend a lot of time using the MSR filter. It worked fine but I just didn't like the hinges, too many moving parts and it was heavier. As for the gravity feeder, that uses the same kind of filter as the Hiker and it doesn't back flush.
@joeypropane
@joeypropane 7 лет назад
This is a common issue with the Katadyn gravity filter if you look online. I also have used the Hiker for like 15 years, but last year switched to the MSR Autoflow and couldn't be happier. I've had no issues with slow filtering and it's so easy, it feels as convenient as tap water! I backflush about a 1L every day for upkeep. I'm also using this in northern Quebec, shield-lakes type canoe-camping. I don't think I could ever go back to pumping.
@MaddyTheGoose
@MaddyTheGoose 7 лет назад
Thanks for the info and tuning in. I sure did like not having to pump with the gravity filter, I'll keep the Autoflow in mind.
