I was raised Protestant, but I always found it confusing because of the differences between denominations. When it comes to choosing between Orthodoxy, Catholicism, or Protestantism, the legitimacy of the papacy is the deciding factor for me. If the papacy is legitimate, then Catholicism is true; if not, then Orthodoxy is the default option over Protestantism.

+YHM! Daniel, you made a beautiful statement about your conviction about choosing to be a member of the Roman Catholic Church. I also have Jewish roots (Sephardic branch), but I want to tell you that I belong to an Eastern Rite Catholic Church, as a servant of the LORD at His altar, with many martyrs, who refused to give up their Christian communion with Rome. If you want, you can watch a recent liturgical celebration from the Byzantine Catholic Church. Thus, you will discover another brother, also with Jewish roots, participating in the liturgical celebration and wearing his Jewish tallit, both at the reading of the gospel and at the reception of the Holy Eucharist (time interval, 1.17.00-1.18.00 of the player) and the anointing with the blessed consecrated oil during the vesper-Lithia (time interval 1.43.00-1.44.00), respectively the thanksgiving that he does after the end of the Holy Liturgy (time interval 1.49.00-1.50.00), within the Greek Catholic Parish , Saint John Chrysostom, Seattle Washington. Search on RU-vid for the title "Divine Liturgy for the Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the First Council of Nicea, May 12, 2024" and you will see the moments mentioned. Personally, I am trying an exercise of imagination, wanting it to happen as soon as possible, with our fellow Jews, participating in the Holy Liturgy, wearing their biblical identity signs, like the brother in the liturgical recording that excited me a lot, and gathered to celebrate the Eucharist, if you want, by all receiving the same Brother-Saviour, in their being. Christ in our midst!

Love how you show the Jewish roots of our Catholic faith! If you look into scripture, history and Jewish culture, the papacy structure is exactly what first century Christians would’ve expected to see. The orthodox view of “first among equals” would’ve been so foreign to first century Jews and is in fact a much later retcon of history. Even the high priest in Judaism had certain authority and prerogatives the other priests didn’t have. God bless our orthodox brethren, and may they arrive home soon! 🙏

The Orthodox churches you mentioned are part of the Eastern Orthodox churches. There are two families of Orthodoxy, the Eastern Orthodox and the Oriental Orthodox and the splits you mentioned between Moscow and Constantinople are Eastern. And also both families acknowledge Rome as an Apostolic church too and St Peter was a bishop for that church, nothing more and nothing less. Rome is a brother among equals and still in heresy over adding years Filioque and the ideas of purgatory.

Jesus knew how to do things at the right time. The time Jesus have the keys of the kingdom of God was well chosen. He asked a question and Peter was given the inspiration to speak out the right answer, thereby making it possible for Jesus to bless Peter with the keys of the kingdom of heaven in front of the other disciples. This incident showed Jesus choosing Peter as his deputy. Jesus blessed Peter and gave him the authority to bind and to loose. Hence the primacy of the papacy is legitimate. You have injection against purgatory. I hope you believe that we must be sanctified/ cleansed of all impurities before we enter heaven. So we do believers undergo final purification / sanctification? Is it at born again event or at the moment of death or after death? Purgatory deals with this issue. You also have issues with the sale of indulgence. This selling thing has been stopped, thanks to Martin Luther. But the teaching on indulgence is still taught. If you can substantiate that the teaching on indulgence is evil, immoral, and contrary to other scripture, then you can make a very good argument to debunk it. Make a fair criticism and many people will be grateful to you.

I really like your videos, but I still have to disagree. Rome has added to many additions to the church. Papal supremacy was never a thing, only Papal primacy. And then you have the addition purgatory. Indulgences in the form of money basically paying your way out of hell. The rock is peters confession, and Christ also gave the other disciples the ability to bind and loose. And you speak of unity, but how do you have unity when the church as a whole teaches certain things but allow bends to the rule? For example you have Eastern Catholics who have priest who are allowed to marry yet Catholicism teaches priest should remain un married. You also have Catholics who reject Vatican 2 but are still in communion. St Gregory Palamas a pillar of Orthodoxy is venerated in Catholicism. Not to mention the Catholics recognizing the Orthodox sacraments as valid, so why have a Pope? Small excommunications have always happened throughout church history it will be resolved as it always is. The Orthodox Church is more unified than the Catholic Church, we all believe the same. The additions aren’t there, the Catholic a church is headed down a really dark road, the pope is very questionable. Having 1 man making the final decision instead of having multiple come together guided by the Holy Spirit just isn’t good. Christ is the head of the church. Not a patriarch who teaches error.

The apostles have power to bind or loose but never given the keys of heaven. The apostles have power to bind or loose but with that logic they can bind or loose within themselves like Modern day orthodoxy with Constantinople and Moscow. Peter is given the keys meaning he has the authority to let anyone into the church and anyone to get out. The other apostles have authority to excommunicate anyone else who is under heresy why they have the power to bind or loose but remember never are they given the same kind of power to have the keys of heaven that peter is given. Everything else you just mentioned is pastoral decision nothing about doctrine. orthodox believe in something similar to purgatory but you guys cant really discuse about it considering your last valid council(if you dont count council of Florence) was 787ad second council of Nicaea. Indulgence are orthodox as well and is more the liberals have distorted what indulgences are if you want to know read the catechism. Your statement about orthodox church unified is a horrible statement from what i just stated when there last council was 1300 years ago.

I’m coming from a mixed Jewish/protestant background but have felt that this is no longer the path I should be on. I have explored Messianic communities in the States and in Israel and really fell in love with the way the congregations in Jerusalem held themselves. On the flip side, I have not found anything similar to that here. My roommate is orthodox Christian and my best friend has recently begun the conversion process to Catholicism. We have had many discussions on the matter but I think that there are a few roadblocks that really inhibit me from being able to reach further into the idea of becoming Catholic that maybe you can give some feedback on: 1) I recognize the idea of the church in Rome as being the head of the Catholic Church. I was taught that the Pope’s of the past ordered Jews to be killed and that they helped the Nazis. I recognize this may be an exaggeration, but it does make it difficult when I consider the possibility of Catholicism. 2) My friends have explained to me how the iconic images of Mary and the saints are not idols. I see and respect their reasoning, but I still can’t see how it’s not. I saw your video on the communion and how that is not idolatry and I get that, but my friends will ask these saints to talk to God on their behalf. I have seen other more religious Jews do the same thing with the rabbis of old. Both of these examples seem to contradict the Torah. I thought we were supposed to pray to God alone. What are your thoughts on this? I would say the is the biggest hurtle I’ve had with approaching Catholicism. I can just hear my father’s voice in my head saying “this is why God sent us to Babylon”. 3) Being Jewish there are many cultural and religious aspects that are mentioned in Torah for us to adhere to. Do you think it is acceptable to continue things such as wearing a kipa, maintaining kosher, etc? Does this cause issues with you and others in the church? I had this problem in the past where others thought I was going against the Bible for doing these things. 4) I guess to bounce off the last point, which aspects of Torah do you keep concerning these customs? Some messianic emphasize it heavily while others are more lax. 5) This may be a trivial thing but how do you mix Pesach and Easter? They are on different days so which do you commemorate the resurrection if it happened on Pesach but the Catholic Church has its own date and time for it? How do you do Shabbat? 6) My last point may be a little blunt but there are not a lot of Jewish people going to the Catholic Church; whereas, the Messianic congregations in Israel are growing. It doesn’t seem, on the outside anyway, that the Catholic Church is really doing a lot to remind our people of who Yeshua is. Why is there such a contrast? In the past, ignorant as this mentality was, I just thought the Catholic Church hated Jews and that’s why they aren’t coming. I know that wasn’t the best mentality but I am still curious as to why it seems that way. I apologize for the length of this post and the density of the material in it. There are just not many people who I can approach in your position who can give me this feedback. In fact you are the only Jewish person who is Catholic that I have ever heard of. I quite frankly didn’t think it was a thing. Another reason that has given me pause with the idea of pursuing being Catholic.

As a Anglican i'd be happy if Catholicism and Anglicanism re-inter in communion and resolve issues for Anglicanism is Via-Media. It's similar to midpoint between Catholics and general Protestants. Because im a monarchist but i do respect the seat of Saint Peter. The Protestant reformation was necessary but i think Catholicism resolved their issues. There's reasons I'm Anglicanism, it's a umbrella denomination for the more reformed Protestant members and structures and more catholic (lowercase not denominational but universal C) Episcopal bishopric structure. It'd be great if Anglicanism becomes a English rite of Catholicism instead of Latin (roman) rite. Like the Chaldean, Maronite, Armenian, Byzantine and Alexandrian rites of Catholicism. Since im not compromising of my beliefs since there's biblical reasons of being a monarchist im still interested in Anglican integrity. But i love Catholicism and this video and would love my denomination and your denomination to have ecumenical resolutions for reconciliation. Also institutional Christ unity is greater for the kingdom of God to show unity in the kingdom of God, Than if i were to just be a individual convert to Catholicism. So I'll stay Anglican but happily read Catholic sources and respect Catholic doctrines on most things agreeable.

6:53 To assume that protestants feel triggered to the thought of an “overarching authority”, like a Bishop or Pope, is just not right. My question to you is…why do Catholics feel the need to have a human authority when God is the one and only true authority? Do most Catholics feel as though being disciplined by God isn’t enough so they rely on a human authority? An authority of this world at best. And to know that we’ve been blessed with the Holy Spirit as well. Humans are unreliable and God is always reliable. Why should we feel the need to have other people when Jesus said it himself that he is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). I’m genuinely asking this and up for a debate.

The hierarchy of the Church recognizes God as the supreme, infallible authority. We believe that God manifests His authority in a real way via the trifecta of Sacred Writ, Sacred Tradition and a Living Authority (we call that the Magisterium). It’s not a new standard. It’s been like that since the times of Moses.
@mirandacc1243

@@TheJewishCatholic I understand the Catholic church has established the standard of magisterium. But, once again, why is there a need to have someone (like a Pope or Bishop) to interpret the word of God? Have we not been given the Holy Spirit and God’s ability to speak to us? What is the difference between a “high authority’s” interpretation and a “normal believer’s” interpretation?
