Great video, thanks for sharing. Fished the East River alot back in the 70s on Ward's Island. Caught quite a few Stripers and eels, of course. Used sand worms for bait. Never saw or heard of a Tautog (Blackfish) being caught back then. Used to fish for Tautog up at City Island in the Bronx.
Fish bites work better then Gum IMO & last longer which = more fish.....I have been testing all the FB flavors & happy to say YES THEY REALLY Catch plenty of species of fish & its a lot less messy too then live bait. Walmart had a rollback on them for $5.00 a bag I scooped up a bunch. Tight lines...
I have about 6 KastKing reels..spinning and bait castings. I have used the flouro, momo and braid. I have been fiahing for over 50 years. And all of their products have never let me down. The affordability and quality make it a great budget alternative. BTW..the larger Stripers still haven't arrived in the part of the Hudson that we fish..yet...
I am pretty siked on the reel. So far so good. Very curious about the braid, thats great to hear you use it. Everything is a little late this year but doesn't surprise me. The waters still warm. But some excellent bait standing by all over the city. Cheers fishn365!
@BobAquatic Super affordable braid, even my buddy and his son seem to think it's just as good as the other bigger names. We see tons of bait...and yeah, that temp has to get to around 58-62° IMHO
How long would you say the saltwater season lasts in NYC? I’m trying to get in as much fishing as possible! Since I started back in August I’ve tallied 56 total fish across 9 species, in large part thanks to watching your videos! Hope I can see you out there one of these days!
It slows down a lot in January and then heats back up starting in March. But there are still a lot of Winter opportunities like inshore white perch, herring, and offshore cod. I am siked to hear you are getting out there and fishing, have fun catching them up!
I caught a 5lb weakfish @crossbay bridge on a krocodile lure back in 98 - I was a savage casting that thing and bringing it back super hot, and that rod would Bend and lock in on whatever I hit! Good times. Never ate them though. Been hooked on catch and release since I caught a striper that was pregnant and huge! I felt like I was giving back to the hobby since that, I love releasing my catches after a quick pic. Loving your videos my brotha, can’t wait to see the work you do with that cast-king reel. Tight lines brotha.
I love reading the old NYC stories, can visualize it really well. Thank you for sharing. I usually keep the abundant smaller fish when I do eat. Mostly catch and release like you. Tight lines bud!
Nice video man! I was fishing there yesterday, caught a 17 inch weakfish and gave it to the gentleman fishing next to me :) some really nice folks over there. Tight lines! 👍🫡
Thats awesome, congrats on that catch bud! It was really nice to see so many people catching them the past few days. And spread out throughout the city too.
I thought the squid drop was interesting. it almost makes me feel like the fish know squid move out, so it's not normal for them to be here, while crabs and muscles become more prominent and available as a food source. maybe I'm giving fish too much credit, but it's interesting, to say the least.
I’ve been using KASTKING reels for a few years now and have been extremely pleased with them , no issues, holding up well and definitely priced right . Gonna try their line of braid next
I've been interested in them for a while. Pretty impressed with it so far, that is great to hear they are holding up for you. For an IPX6 4000 size reel, its pretty compact and light.
I use weakfish for sashimi, and it is really different. Southern varieties of speckled trout have parasites and are not okay for raw consumption. But the northern variety is parasite free, incredibly soft and buttery in texture and clean in flavor. By law, all fish sold for raw consumption must be flash frozen to kill parasites, so you can't buy weakfish sashimi officially. The meat would turn to silly putty if you flash froze it and then defrosted it.
Damn that is cool, I didn't know you could eat weakfish raw. It has a flavor that often turns me off cooked but I would be really curious how the raw taste is. They smell totally fine when I filled them.
@@BobAquatic The only thing is you really do have to get them bled and on ice fast. I live in Canarsie, so it's no issue. I used to plug the beach with waders by bicycle, so I know it's hard. A small cooler bag with ice should do it.
Hey Bob! Wow, glad to see you actually tried out what I was suggesting. From the video it doesn't seem like you enjoyed it a bit. However, I have to tell you that curry looks good although it can be a little bit less pasty and a bit more runny. Not sure if that conveys it well. I wish I had your dm / contact where I can actually show you how the food is made. Wouldn't mind inviting you over to try it out in how we make it. Let me know if you're upto the challenge.
Oh no I loved it! I spaced out while cooking in the other room and let the curry thicken too much but since the weakfish was in there it like absorbed. It was mad good and I appreciate the suggestion a lot. I might try doing it Tikka style if I get another one, you were right on with that blend of spices and weakfish
Hey man love your videos , I fish in Brooklyn all the time. I recently got those gulp sand worms but I can’t seem to catch anything on it. Any advice / different style fishing methods I can try?
Hey! I appreciate you watching and glad to hear you are getting out fishing in the city. Are you fishing close to the bottom with them? I would try and adjust your rig so the worm has the ability to touch bottom. If thats not working try and do some snap pops with the worm and then let it touch bottom, pop the rod upward, then let the worm touch bottom. It'll vibrate the floor and bring fish over out of curiosity.
@@BobAquatic I appreciate you getting back to me man. Really appreciate it. Do you have any recommendations on where to fish for stripers in Brooklyn? I do a lot of pier fishing just no stripers for some reason. Iv been trying to get into using lures I just seem to have no luck with them to catch anything honestly not even just stripers
@@BobAquatic and I guess what would you also recommend I use. I’m a bunker chunker. Like I said I wanna get into artificial. I just have absolutely no luck with them fish off of mostly peers.
@@3601christopher sometimes the fish will be more likely to hit one or the other so if you put both you can increase the chances. Also, if a fish takes the real bait and you lose it without knowing, if you have an artificial on there too then you will at least still have something on the hook to attract the fish rather than a bare hook.
I was getting my shrimp taken by smaller interference fish. The gulp worm stays on the hook longer so if the smaller fish took the shrimp it would give me more extended time to still catch a fish. I like experimenting and the fish seemed to be into it
@@hushengze1199 For bonito? cast out and reel in moderate to fast letting the jig stay 1-3ft below the surface. If that doesn't work try letting it hit bottom and snapping back up to the surface. That doesn't work try a really fast retrieve skipping the lure across the surface
@@BobAquatic I am fed up with the real bait; if I am playing lures, what lures or jigs do you suggest buying if I target striped bass, black sea bass, and blackfish? Most of the time, it is spent on the party boat. Do I need to wait for jigs to go to the bottom and keep jigging at the bottom of different water levels?
They seem to be all over Long Island, I would try any bay that has peanut bunker early in the morning. Whether or not they are going to show can be tough. They sorta just appear out of nowhere
I am not too familiar with that area, but I bet some scrolling with navionics or google maps would work well. Dig around the maps and let the adventure begin
great sequence of catches as usual on the spots etc .. Thanx for sharing...btw with the colder weather coming what jacket for fishing are you wearing..link?
Thank you Coney, I have a few rain coats that have different thicknesses depending on the temperatures. In this video it is Columbia PFG rain jacket and pants. But they are not thick and I was wearing pants with leggings underneath. Layering tends to work best.
This question is posed a lot but the fish move around a lot. Ultimately it’s up to you to make the call. What’s to say a fish you catch out east one day was previously hanging out here…
Yeah its totally fine. The only body of water I'd moderate consumption is the east river. But a lot of those fish migrate in the summer too. I would not eat the resident striped bass. Those are full of PCB's
Have you tried smaller pieces? Taking the shell off helps too. Threading it through the hook a few times helps too instead of one straight hook through, if that makes sense.
Hey! Recently bought some bucktail lures and epoxy jigs from your links. Would you use them on the East River? Considering all the junk on the river bottom, I’m worried about snagging.
what up! I really appreciate the support, thank you Se0ultrain! Those are pretty pricey lures so I would be careful bouncing or touching bottom in the river. Maybe try working more mid-water column if you do. There is a lot of snags and a good chance you'll lose one
