We are Pat and Frankie - a couple documenting our life, while exploring the world by sail, on our yacht HI.⛵️ Join our journey as we navigate towards adventure and A PLACE TO CALL HOME.
Whilst climbing the corporate ladder we said good-bye to our jobs and embarked on this voyage. Despite no previous sailing experience we sold everything we owned to buy our boat & teaching ourselves the ropes of sailing has been an adventure in itself! 😁
Hop on board and join our journey! There are plenty of ways to explore what we do: We upload regular videos of our adventures on RU-vid, share daily shenanigans on Instagram (link below) and create articles on our Blog. Browse our website www.patandfrankie.com to discover more! 🌎
YOUR SUPPORT means everything to us! Without you, this journey would not be possible! If you want to contribute to the making of our videos and help keep HI afloat head over to our Patreon page (link below). Again, THANKS a lot for joining us on this exciting ride! 🫶
Hello everyone, wonderfully beautiful pictures and landscapes, it's a shame we couldn't experience it. Have fun exploring the Canary Islands before heading to the Caribbean. ❤
we say hello to the crow on the "HI" boat!! That was a really educational video, I learned a lot of new things... La Palma is an impressive island! The salt... have you tried it yet??? How did it taste??? And in addition to sailing, diving 🤿 that shows you are water people through and through!! Admirable 😊 we are already looking forward to the next video/ keep up the good work 👍🏻
Loved your video!!! I am getting ready to do the same thing to my boat. I noticed you used the MultiPlus 5,000. I am going to use 3 Epoch 460Ah lithium batteries. I spec’ed the MultiPlus 3,000. Would you recommend I use the 5,000?
Thanks! We're really pleased that you like it. And it sounds great, we are very happy with our setup. We opted for the MultiPlus 5000 because, in case of doubt, we sometimes want to use several of our consumers at the same time and may want to leave options open for the future (e.g. a induction stovetop). Therefore, from our point of view, it depends heavily on your user behavior and your consumers. An energy balance has helped us to define this, we wrote down the consumption of our electronics and then saw what would happen when we use some at the same time.
Something is different because before the computer boats was more quiet and natural. Less threatening. I could never be a sailor. Im terrified of the depths of the ocean that are unknown. There is so much vastness of uncertainty, but boy, what a life.
Yes that’s true everything changes over time. Somethings get better and somethings get worse. For sure the ocean and the weather is very special and so uncertain but that’s what it makes so unique. Thanks 😊
Yes, perhaps - numerous scientists are currently trying to investigate the background. So far there are various explanations, but no single statement on the subject.
We didn't expect them so early because we were far from the main orca area - so we followed the official new recommendations: - furl the sails - start the engine - go as fast as possible
hi am old aussie sailor77,you need spare pumps/motors for every thing electric/also engine spares for everything .spares for mast ,rigging and spars boom etc.. your yacht is fancy but crossing oceans is not easy, are you prepared or just foolhardy. G OOD LUCK.
Thank you so much for your Tipps. We think that we are well prepared and we have lots of spare parts for everything. Thanks for the wishes and we’ll keep you updated on this channel.
On this trip we were the crew because we helped a friend who was the skipper. In the most cases we sail alone, so just the two of us and sometimes we sail with friends.
Just started watching so starting from the beginning. I must say I love the intro with Robin Williams. It was great.❤ Looking forward to see where your new adventures takes you
Very interesting article, I hadn't imagined it would be like that... you'd think it would be much cheaper... but you could be wrong!! Thank you for the insight!
Thanks - we thought maybe a bit cheaper but we work on it to reduce the costs. And we a pretty sure that we can reduce the cost after some time and in the new sailing area. 😊
Thanks for the input! We think that it is clear that we are talking about our costs and also give a range of possible costs as boatlife expenses are very individual
As you live on your boat overtime, you will find cost saving alternatives according to your lifestyle and budget. I recommend as you continue your journey, to talk with other cruisers over a glass of wine, what they budget and spend. the Rigging Doctor channel dives into some of these cost issues, as well, things they wasted money on. My friends, a couple, are cruising the coast of Mexico on a Morgan- Catalina 44, said they spend 1/2 the costs compared to living on land. Every day is an adventure, is what they tell me. Enjoy your channel Mahalo.
Hi! Thanks for those tips and interesting thoughts! 😊 We are interested in how our expenses will change now that we have a solid „setup“ and soon we’ll be anchoring more and hopefully also catching a fish or two 😉 and get to reduce some costs.. Nice to have you on board!
Such an adorable couple. It feels good seeing you guys achieving your dreams and living your lives as you love. The first period of owning a sailboat is the most expensive because you have to refit and add your personal signature to your floating home. In the future, you will realise that many expenses are unnecessary and you can have the same results by spending less. I suggest you invest the maximum on things that reduce costs, for example, more photovoltaics and large-capacity lithium batteries. Those upgrades can help you to save money on fuel and gas. You already have a satellite communication device (Starling) so the satellite phone can not do anything better. Watermakers can reduce your visits to marinas and also can provide 100% drinkable water so not need to buy water. Try to understand the procedures on how to maintain and service the equipment, engine and other peripheral systems. The sailing community has published lots of books on DIY works on the boat, and I am sure you can find them useful. In the end, you need to realise that the most elegant and delicatessen supermarket is located exactly underneath the sailboat and it is free 😉 So you can invest in a fishing gear box and I am 100% sure that this investment will pay off at the same time you get your first tuna. Wish you all the best, many kisses from Greece and I hope to meet you out there one day ❤
Hi! Thank you for your lovely words! It means a lot to us that you took the time to comment and share your thoughts! ☺️ We are getting there that we figure out how to optimize our costs and are soooo looking forward to saving on marinas and investing in some new lures to catch some fish 😉 We definitely believe like you say that some investments will pay off in the future! Sounds like you habe a lot of first hand knowledge - are you living on a boat too? All the best to you from La Palma on the Canaries 🤗
@@patandfrankie Thank you for your kind reply. After 25 years of living on a sailboat, I've noticed what are the upgrades that save money and matter to everyday life in the sea. I am a scientist and engineer, and in old times was not easy to work from the boat. Today Starling technology solves this problem and I can enjoy long time passages and extraordinary destinations. New sailors, are often overdue with the equipment and sacrifice tons of money in the name of safety. I am a gadget guy and I love to have the latest equipment. (some of them are still in the box after two years 😅) I have changed 3 sailboats until I find the one that meets my needs, and this is my biggest mistake of losing money. I rushed to get sailboats that were not suitable for my type of sailing. On sailboats world size matters so today I own a 2012 Bavaria 50 and I am happy with the capabilities, performance and layout of this particular sailboat. The only thing that can drive you away from this lovely lifestyle is the boat running costs. I choose to invest in equipment that reduces running costs. My No. 1 investment was energy production and storage. (I paid twice for this task until realised that quality equipment "Lithium Batteries" are much better when they last longer). The No. 2 investment was about food storage and a capable water maker. More fridges longer time to isolated places, fewer visits to expensive tourist destination supermarkets. The No. 3 investment was to replace all the inlets and outlets below the water with high-quality plastic ones. This saves me a ton of money because I need to replace them every 6 years not every 2 years. I stop paying for all those cleaning products. White cleaning vinegar and a soft brush are the best for maintaining and cleaning almost everything in the boat. I can see you invest in parts. You can not imagine how much money you save with this investment. By sailing the South Hemisphere and seeking Volvo engine parts is an expensive sport. Boats have several electric motors, so try to keep some brushes for the alternator and other motors around the boat. A second water pressure pump in the box must be on board too. Enjoy te ride, and thank you for your reply :)
Many thanks to you for sharing your years of experience and your insights with us. These tips from experienced sailors help us to find our way. Some of our experiences already coincide with yours. We are already looking forward to what is yet to come. We will definitely try to enjoy this life journey as much as possible! ⛵️
That Yankees hat is horrible! The absolute worst thing you can do on a sailing vessel other than take bananas aboard is to wear that disgusting Yankees hat. Im going to send you a Boston Red Sox hat , Teddy Ballgame will watch over you.

What we heard yes - and the recommendations at the moment say, that you should use the engine as fast as you can, especially when they attacked you. But for us it is very difficult to say what is right or wrong. 😞
There are undoubtedly several problems caused by mankind, for this case although the latest research has shown that it is a playful behavior the Orcas are showing.
I am impressed by your courage to live your dream, I am struggeling to find my way in life and be to anxious to make such a big step without any secure.
Thank you very much! Our experience showed us, that the first step is the most difficult one and then everything comes step by step. You still need stamina and it will work ☺️ So be courageous and you will see everything will work and there is always a new way or a solution. We wish you that your dreams come true 😉
You blend excitement with humor so effortlessly, turning what could be a harrowing experience into a captivating tale of resilience and awe-inspiring encounters with nature. Your storytelling prowess and courage on the high seas are truly admirable. And I am a floating village life from Vietnam.
A good question that we asked ourselves again and again afterwards. We tried to combine the recommendations available to us. In hindsight, we would probably have been better off choosing the route in the 20m zone along the Moroccan coast or sailing higher up the Spanish mainland (or even Portugal).
@@patandfrankie I realize hindsight comments are always easy. I think the two alternatives you mentioned are both better, but again, it's a done deal, and could have been worse.👴😉
Thats true 😉 also what we know is that the Orcas move with the Tunas and depending on the season they relocate along the coast. So for anyone else planning this trip it’s maybe also a tip to check where the hotspot has moved to .. 😌
