Hmmm-step 2 showed a very dirty toilet, but when step 3 came and it was time to pour the coke into the dirty toilet, the toilet was much much much cleaner than what was shown in the "step 2" part.

That is in fact how they home in on their targets, they follow the trail of CO2 that people and animals breathe out Obviously then, those traps won't work when there are a lot of people around or if there is a campfire or BBQ burning. The Carbon Dioxide from those will drown out the signal from the trap and it won't work. And they will fizzle out really quickly when the yeast has used all the sugar. Many other biting stinging and annoying insects are attracted to sweet smells and sugar, but not especially mosquitoes
