mine changes the placement of images on its own… and i noticed it didn't save a significant part of the notes i took during class. i dont want to switch apps bc i already have an order in freeform but this is infuriating. any help would be appreciated (ipad pro 2020 13.9”)
Sorry, not sure how I could help you. Haven’t had these problems. I get why you are infuriated about data loss. I would be too. Are you working on multiple devices on the same board. Maybe you updated on one device before it had synced all changes from the other device and that corrupted it? Just a thought you might check. Looks like the iCloud sync went wrong and often these problems occurred because of multiple versions not integrating correctly. And other than Numbers Freeform has no good version system where you can retrieve older versions. Sorry.
The shapes are vector files, which is why they have holes and can be resized infinitely. Adding text to simple shapes to create labels is recommended, but not for complex shapes. I wish Apple add math text or math symbols in the shapes.
As far as I can see in the current betas of IPADOS 18, Apple will bring Math Notes to Freeform. But this will be more the ability to calculate input from your handwriting or within text fields, not so much adding math symbols as shapes. Sorry, I guess you need to either draw those by hand or import them from an external source.
Hi Patrick, thanks for the video. Same problem here - but one issue still remains for me: although I've selected "source-URL" as an attribute to export from Evernote, the URL won't show up in Apple notes ... this is super crucial for me as I frequently visit the source of my notes! Any idea on how to tackle this problem?
Unfortunately these won’t be imported. So, if you depend on this and would like to leave Evernote, you need to search for another app. Check out Joplin (joplinapp.org) I think I read somewhere that they are importing source URLs.
@@patrickstoeckmann Wow, thanks for the instant reply! Sadly this will make moving my notes from Evernote to Apple Notes so much more time consuming, if not even impossible 😢
Yes it is on the iPhone. You need the Shortcuts app from Apple, which should be preinstalled. If somehow you removed it, you can download it from the App Store.
Very helpful thanks a ton man. Please can you help, how to add social media links? Can’t find anywhere on the net not even in that Wikipedia article. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram. Thanks again for the great efforts and the unique way of making this easy and doable. Cheers.
Well you can add them via X-SOCIALPROFILE. Here an example for Facebook: X-SOCIALPROFILE;type=facebook:facebook.com/myusername. So after the : you enter the URL to your profile page. This works for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. But not for WhatsApp since you don’t have a URL to your profile page there. In WhatsApp you are connected via your phone number. You can find out this and more by entering the fields in a contact on your IOS device, then share/export it to files app and then open the VCF file with a textviewer (I used Textastic).
@@patrickstoeckmannThanks indeed man. You’re very responsive, and you put time and efforts. I really appreciate and you got a sub. I actually tried socialProfile= Tried several variable, non worked and it was frustrating. Then I tried to exporta VCF file of a contact, I’ve done on Mac and opened it with TextEdit l, saw the X- thingy, and could replicate Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn. I need to try on a contact with instagram and RU-vid. I tried to export on the phone but didn’t realize I could save it with Files, so you were very helpful especially that I have Textastic (bought long ago, I’m a programmer), and replicated what you did. Thanks again, I’ll make sure to watch every video you publish, your channel is underrated and deserves much more recognition. Keep up the great work and tips you’re providing. Cheers. Frank.
@@patrickstoeckmannI wrote a long message thanking you but for some reason it’s not showing! Thanks indeed. Although I figured it out by exporting contact from my my MacBook as VCF file and opened it using Text Edit, but you brought Textastic which I bought it long ago as a programmer and I didn’t know you can export a contact from the iPhone! Nice tips. Thanks again. I subbed. You deserve much more recognition for the unique helpful content, the way you explain things making them easy and putting lots of efforts in your research and then how your responsive in the comments and the rich answers. That’s unique and you do deserve all the appreciation and recognition. You gained an avid follower. I’ll wait for new videos and tips while I go through your previous ones. Cheers man.
Thanks for the nice feedback. Glad I could help you with that. About the channel, I am a bit slow currently with new content, but I will pick up soon. Until then, hope you get some more nuggets from my other videos. Cheers back.
Is there a way to QR to get the user to text you their contact info and or ask additional questions also? So example, marketing card we want them to text their contact info and possibly add our contact info after the text?
No, you can only put text in a QR code. So the way you could achieve it is by linking to a website from the QR code and on the website you have a form where they enter their contact details and on the confirmation page of your form you present a contact card (VCF file) as a download.
Yes, you can drag and drop the recording to any folder in the files app, where you can play it and link to it using iCloud (or Dropbox, Google Drive etc.) sharing. I actually save most of my long term recordings in the file system not in the voice memo app. Here are more things you can do with drag and drop on an iPhone or iPad. 20+ Things You Can Drag and Drop on the iPhone ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RkKsCapm0f8.html
can you do a tutorial on specifically mind mapping. like the app mind maps automatically makes the nodes by pressing tab and it auto sizes and moves things so perfectly. can we create the same experience in freeform??
No, it is not possible to replicate that. There is currently no auto-aligning like with all these Mind-Map Tools. You can quickly create any diagram by dragging on the connectors and selecting any of the basic shapes, but you must align them by hand. So, while you can do Mind Maps with Freeform, you should go for other tools if you really want to have the Mind Map experience.
How did you get the Format menu to stay pinned open to the side in the iPad Pages app? All I get is a drop down that floats over part of the document, and the moment I go to type, it disappears. The ability to keep it pinned there like on the Mac version would be very useful for my workflow. 👍🏻 Nevermind, I enabled the “More Space” scaling setting on my 11” iPad, and now I get that Format menu to stay open! I guess it was a screen size thing. 👍🏻
This was EXTREMELY helpful 🙏. I never used this , will use it from now following your tutorials. New to your channel and subscribed 😊 Thanks for sharing 🙏
Different Solution!!! With the Pencil/pen tool hand writing ends up grouped together unless you intervene and split it up. For example: I take notes in multiple columns on the same board for multiple meetings. In Freeform as you add more handwriting it extends the "grouping" or "layer" to include or add new handwriting to the block of adjacent handwriting. I use freeform exclusively now for ALL note taking and my boards had started to SLOW DOWN with pencil strokes lagging behind by multiple words. I realized ^ that this grouping was happening and it begins to make more sense as to why my iPad is crunching so hard to process new strokes. To see what text is grouped together de-select the apple pencil and just touch an area of text and it'll show you how large the box is around the text. To FIX this I use the Selection Tool to grab a large chunk or whole column of text and choose the separate option which will separate it from other handwriting adjacent to it. Once I do this it helps tremendously and hand writing is back to being very responsive. For some of these notes I have to separate text more than once, it would depend on how expansive your note is. Nobody pointing out that this video only provides audio in the left channel. My right earbud only gives silence. I checked with other videos it's the video, not my earbuds.
Sorry, you are true. That must have been an error at export. Unfortunately RU-vid doesn't allow me to re-upload a video, so there is nothing I can do now.
It was really annoying that you went so far out of the way to hide the name of the other app just to lead people on and increase watch time. Thumbs down.
Well, most people never use Numbers in that way, so I wanted to show them unbiased what Numbers is also capable of. Agreed, that not all might like the setup, it wasn’t for increasing watch time it was for opening peoples minds up.
The big plus for me is being able to scan multi-page documents really quickly and automatically import them into my Inbox. That’s ScanSnap and Evernote. I really like Apple Notes and love the way it’s being developed. Not totally convinced I want to ditch Evernote yet though. If I do your video will provide me with an excellent template process to follow. Thanks for sharing.
I was with you, but stopped using Evernote for scanning years ago, when I needed to share lots of scans (receipts) with a tax consultant on a regular basis. Exporting scans from Evernote is actually a nightmare. So, I reprogrammed my original Evernote ScanSnap (still have it with the Evernote logo on it) to scan to a folder. There I would give it a proper file name using YYYY-MM-DD - Sender name - Type of document as a format and keep it in monthly folders. Then I can easily zip the month and send it to the tax consultant. And since Mac has the excellent Spotlight search I find all documents just as quick as with Evernote. I switched something like 8 years ago and never regretted it.
This was great except for the actual step by step of how to export/import was so super fast, I couldn't track the steps... and that's what I really needed.
Sorry for not pausing on this point. The video was more about the thought process behind selecting what you should and shouldn‘t import. The actual steps (although shown in the video) are described as an example here (www.macrumors.com/how-to/migrate-from-evernote-to-apple-notes/).
Not any more with this mentioned zoom problem. That has been fixed by now. There are however still problems with lag when using lots of handwritings or drawings. Looks like the rendering of these is still taxing the system pretty hard. When it lags depends on the individual config, but I had people who switched their forms from purely handwritten to mostly shaped based and it runs much smoother.
Magnifying glass does not seem to be available anymore in PDF and moving a page seem to be only possible when it is not selected on my iPad running iOS 17. Everything else however works as advertised. One thing however that troubles me, ist that the files app sometimes just copies a file instead of moving it. Even when I select move from the context menu. This happens when trying to move files from iOS cloud for example. When using drag and drop, a plus signn appears an he file is copied too. Is there no modifier key (like on the Mac) to get a move intead of a copy?
The magnifying glass was retired (unfortunately) throughout all apps with the new pencil palette. I have no problems scrolling through PDFs using iOS17 though. Copying and moving a file works differently if you move it between file providers. If you move your file within the same file provider (i.e. within iCloud) moving should work, however if you move from iCloud to Dropbox or Google Drive, then a copy happens, instead of a move. It is the same like in Apple Mail if you want to move say mails between two separate Exchange accounts (not working).
Yes, I understand, that from Dropbox files are copied, but files are also copied when moving from iCloud drive to local storage. So it seems always to copy when not moved from the same root. What I meant about the PDF is, that rearanging a page is only possible, when it is not already seletect, thus not showing the 3 dots. A bit stranage but that‘s at least how it looks on my iPad. After I figured this out, rearanging works fine :-)
Tell that to the professors at colleges! Because MS Word is asked, I am working on MS Word on iPad, and it is stupidly castrate app! For example, Copy and Paste with Options is missing! Ohh no
Yes, at most colleges and universities (and jobs) you often don‘t have a choice. You need to use MS Word. And for most tasks a MacBook (or a PC) would be a much better choice for MS Word. Unfortunately, but that is the world we live in, although the iPad has been around for so long it is still a neglected OS by many big software companies who created their apps in the PC dominant era.
Thanks for a fresh perspective on Numbers - hadn’t thought of it as a mind mapping / white board competitor to Freeform. While your title was intriguing I don’t agree with some of the other commentators that it is clickbait. I’m a long-time excel user, and I always appreciated numbers sheets & tables flexibility compared to excel. I think what this really highlights is Apple’s strength on developing OS-level toolkits and capabilities that any app can adopt and customize. I’d love for Apple to make Freeform part of the iWork family, and expand and enhance the toolkits across all respectively so there is better parity in functionality and capabilities.
Not really, it worked for me. Have you tried it with a small notebook of around 10 or so notes for testing. Can you try importing it on Mac and on iOS or iPadOS?
Thanks for a great video - how do I share and work in the same document with partners? I would love to be able to co - work as in the notes - is it possible in numbers?
I have an iPad M1 and Macbook M2. Adding long texts on Macbook, aligned them referenced to a line. When I check the texts on iPad, the lining is completely messed up. I fix the lining on iPad, then Macbook's lining mess up. Syncing is definitely not good enough yet. iPad & iPhone works fine, lining seems same.
Could it be that this is a font or rendering problem? I don't see it on my example using the standard font and size - checking on my Macbook and iPhone it renders identical.
@@patrickstoeckmann It's strange, I have other panels which have many stickers side by side, nothing wrong with them. I'll update you if I catch the reason. Thanks!
Can‘t say why they made that decision. I also wish they will allow more flexibility with the printing in the upcoming versions. So far it isn‘t good for using it as a print layout tool. Actually, since boards can get big pretty soon printing only on 1 page makes no sense because everything is so small. Sorry, I can‘t give you a solution here.
What im missing in both apps is the list of references i.e. for images. The option to list all used images in a list at the end of the document. You basicly have to write it by yourself
@@patrickstoeckmann Tthere is none on the iPad and thats the point unfortunately. I wrote a book (Foundations of Systemintegration) using pages in my webbrowser on my windows computer. I found out you can do it (the references) using word on your computer. I think this is a very important thing. I considered to get a macbook but i think i will upgrade my ipad to the latest one and a dockingstation to work with my main monitor. Maybe this will work out. But i think they really should work on the ipad OS. This is such a limiting factor. Besides i use my ipad every day and i dont wanna miss it but there are some things you can't just do or figure out a workaround
Don‘t count on Apple adding feature parity soon. In their paradigm the Mac has still a place for doing all the stuff that only a minority of people (like you and me) need (but depend upon). They will add features to those apps on iPad (and later Vision Pro) but the fact that they made it clear that you can connect the Mac (and not the iPad) to Vision Pro (because iPad apps run natively on Vision Pro) shows me, that they plan to keep the Mac for another 10+ years as the main workhorse for specialized tasks (like the one you describe). For people like you (and me) their recommendation would be „Get a Mac“. And I think it might be of more use to you than getting the latest iPad.
Is there a possibility that Apple Notes also imports / shows source url of the Evernote Note? It seems that this URL is not imported from ENEX to the new Apple Note
It is not and to my knowledge there is no way to do it. Apple included this as a way to move people to Apple Notes, not to link back to the old version on another system.
@@patrickstoeckmann not backlinking to Evernote. But in Evernote if I added a page from browser to Evernote, there is also the original source url in the note informations. That are not imported to Apple Notes and get lost.
Ah ok. Unfortunately these won’t be imported either. So, if you depend on this and would like to leave Evernote, you need to search for another app. Check out Joplin (joplinapp.org) I think I read somewhere that they are importing source URLs.
Was really hoping to switch to this app. Notability has syncing issues with multiple devices that change and use constantly so I decided to give this a try. Looks like I'm going back to notability and checking this app in another year or so. Pretty garbage results and all I'm doing is creating basic maps for a game I'm playing to not get lost in the maze. I'm talking about an nes game so it's so basic. Lately Apple has turned into MS and their OS and apps are riddled with windows like bugs. It's crazy, under Steve Jobs we never got crazy issues like this all the time and never getting fixed right away.
Sorry to hear that you have so many problems. So the reported lag is fixed with the latest OS and it is (at least for me) much more stable and has some nice improvements. But there is still enough room for growth.
@@patrickstoeckmann it got worse when I opened the same board on 2 different iPads. When a single iPad has it open it had some lag, but with the 2 it made the original lag child's play. Crazy that this is an Apple product.
Interesting. Not my experience. I opened a big board (over 50 photos and over 100 other elements) on my iPad Pro (iPadOS 17.4 beta) and mini from 2018 (iPadOS 17.3.1) and they run smooth and fast in the same board at the same time. Do you have a lot of handwriting? I found that lots of handwriting (rendering) leads to lag. I use mostly shapes, images and text and only some handwriting. Could be the difference.
@@patrickstoeckmann maybe that's it. Because it's so tiny. For non standard shapes I colored in. The game I was playing was nes Zelda. I just finished it and going to do the 2nd quest, I think I'll do an experiment. I'll just label the doors and secret passages with shapes and no other details.
Sorry guy, that‘s a Naketano hoodie. The brand doesn’t exist any more. You can only get it second hand. This hoodie is named „Schnizzel Dizzel Popizzel“ (they used a funny naming scheme). Just search for it on Ebay.
Neither can you with Word on an iPad. That is the paradigm of a word processor. You don’t copy pages, you copy text. If you want it another way go for another app like keynote where you have each slide separated.
@@patrickstoeckmann actually i found a way with Pages just insert a section first rather than add a page. Then when you duplicate it just duplicate the page. Another reason Pages is better is that you can create a text box and drag it wherever you want. I don’t think Word lets you do that but who knows. Google is the least flexible because it’s more like Word whereas Pages is like a combo of Word plus Adobe InDesign but doesn’t crash
Word also has text fields which you can position anywhere on a page. Of course you could use text fields for this, but the idea is actually different. The idea is that you have the regular flowing text and the you have this inserts (often quotes or highlights from the text) which you put in a text field on either side and the regular text flows around it. This is often used in print. And yes, you can go pretty fancy using text boxes (you can even connect them, so that text flows from one into another). Their templates (brochures etc.) show some of these capabilities.
