it's pretty old now, does anyone know if there's been a new release? i saw someone on reddit mentioning (4 mo ago) the best looking release is actually the "new release of the 1080p version", but i don't know when that was, if it's a 2021-2024 release or something older, but since he said it was NEW, i guess it's new. I also dont know what it is referring to, extended or not.
Is it just me or does it seems not to add any detial at all, just changing the colors? I say it is just an upscaled HD with fixed color gradient. Prove me wrong :)
The 4k version of these films is my favorite by far. I never liked the greenish tint over everything and the very few times I can see a problem with the dnr is negligible to me.
Actually, this is (from what I’ve heard) a rescan of the original 35mm movie - so a native 4K. Some UHD movies are, as you say, just tweaked. But this looks really good I think. Although the 2008 blu-ray looked good already.
Apparently, the 4K Theatrical Cut has the best color grading of all releases. It fixes some problems (like the green tint in Fellowship), while maintaining the rest like it was. The Extended Editions look completely different, they are more grey and much darker. I think it kind of ruins a bit of the tone. Things look more grounded, less fantasy-like. I'm making a fan-edit of the trilogy, combining the theatrical with the best scenes of the extended, this way I can get the good color grading with a few less additional scenes for a perfect pacing.
THANK YOU!! As someone who prefers the theatrical, I've been wanting to know how if there were changes with the 4K extended edition and the 4K theatrical, especially since I know there were differences with the blu-rays.
How would one go about seeing this fan edit haha. I've always felt like the best version of these movies is somewhere in b/w the theatrical and extended versions.
The older version looks better. The 4K version lifts the shadows too much and makes a lot of the CG look significantly more fake. Also, the 4K version removes so much character of the older version. Very bland.
You’re not seeing the HDR version on RU-vid. The black levels of the discs on an actual HDR tv are gorgeous. I was comparing Amon Hen shots to the originals, the blacks on the 4K are much richer imo. Things like a pillar the shadow side will be in complete darkness, while in the original movie it’s basically daylight on that side. I personally like the deeper colours over the desaturated look. I think it’s a vast improvement, this video is not representative.
Thanks for the comparison. I was trying to decide between either 4k discs and while the newer is one is slightly better it's hard to justify the significant price increase + much more diffucult to find on the used market without being included in the columbia bundle.
