For anyone wondering, basically the three versions can be characterized like this: the original is very saturated and has a mix of warm and cold tints, the 2012 Blu-ray has for the most part a green tint, and the 4K version has a natural color without any tints.
@stevemuzak8526
@stevemuzak8526 3 года назад
4K is the original look. This is how it's suposed look like. White is white, blue is blue, green is green. No tints of yellow or green.
@scottblues2332
@scottblues2332 3 года назад
@@stevemuzak8526 well sometimes directors will use a color tint to give scenes a distinct feel or a specific “look” that they want. I believe Breaking Bad used lots of warm tints, the matrix used a green tint whenever the characters were in the matrix... etc But yeah in this case I’m not sure what they were going for especially with the green tint lol Maybe it’s one of those things that were popular in Hollywood back when they made that version and so they put it in... like at one time all video games were just mostly shades of brown because supposedly that made them feel more “realistic”...
@ES-qy2ju
@ES-qy2ju 3 года назад
@@scottblues2332 exactly, there's not a green tint issue, it never existed. It was delivered to make it feel cinematic. It was a creative choice and a popular for that time, even now on instagram or youtube cinematic videos.

@@scottblues2332you forgot the gradual increase of DNR per version to the point of complete loss of detail and very visible image smearing in the 4K version, which makes it pretty much unwatchable

Excessive HDR resulting in washed out shots with no depth. Sometimes the eye does not need to see everything in the shadows. I wish they would understand this. DNR and edge sharpening looks heavy as well with some shots looking like green screen now with waxyness very evident in close ups. I think WETA needed some tutorials from Warner bros folks who 4K restored Blade runner. Kept the grain , kept the detail. Will wait until drop in price. Quite disappointing!

Yes dnr is bad but not as bad as terminator 2 4k
@timforsgren5275
@timforsgren5275 2 года назад
The remaster certainly shines in a good number of places but the original grade without the DNR and the "forgiving" nature of being HD makes the CG elements blend much better. The Rivendell scene with Frodo and Sam makes it feel more like a set, foreground and background separate. Although the 4K brings out so much of the amazing craftmanship in set design. So it's a mixed bag for me. Will probably alternate a bit! I just really miss the beautiful film grain in particular.
@mosesking2923

A film enthusiast who misses film grain is like an audio enthusiast who misses scratches in the audio. Thankfully we have moved on to superior image and sound qualities in movies. The removal of film grain is a massive improvement.

@@mosesking2923 They didn't "remove the grain", though. They synthesized an unnaturally sharp and smooth picture, turning live-action photography into a cartoon. Look at Saruman's forehead: the fine texture of the skin has been painted over with artificially smoothed flesh tone.

@@mosesking2923 Film grain ≠ image noise. Film grain is an ingrained (pardon the pun) element of movies shot on film, constituting the texture and detail of the images; adding DNR to something that was shot on film results in less detail, not more.

The 4k version of these films is my favorite by far. I never liked the greenish tint over everything and the very few times I can see a problem with the dnr is negligible to me.

it's pretty old now, does anyone know if there's been a new release? i saw someone on reddit mentioning (4 mo ago) the best looking release is actually the "new release of the 1080p version", but i don't know when that was, if it's a 2021-2024 release or something older, but since he said it was NEW, i guess it's new. I also dont know what it is referring to, extended or not.

I guess the movie has to be reproduced by a real 4K player in order to see the real quality. Obviously most of videos on RU-vid won't show that quality even if it's un 4K.
@electronichq974
@electronichq974 3 года назад
Judging a 4K release by compressed RU-vid videos isn't the fairest way to make a judgment. RU-vid compresses videos uploaded to their servers quite a bit, so you'll never get a true representation of how the actual release looks, but it is a good way to see the adjustment in colours and to get somewhat of an understanding of what you'll be getting. Just times what you see here 2 fold and that's what the release will more or less look like.
@gurratell7326

@@electronichq974 Thou these are 4K _screenshots_ which RU-vid have no problem encoding in a proper way. And also I bet you saw all these crops in this clips as well which is a piece of cake to encode, that also show the difference quite clearly even for those without a 4K monitor. So yeah, I do agree with @nintendokings, the resolution bump is disappointing with almost nonexisting difference, and with even noise reduction in some shots making it look overall worse than the 1080p bluray. But I do very much prefer the color grading in the new UHD release!
@nintendokings
@nintendokings 3 года назад
@@electronichq974 I know RU-vid compression is a thing. But that usually means a grainier image. Even when zoomed in 200% I can see no extra detail in the 4K version. Now I’m sure when I have the actual 4K disc it will look nicer and cleaner but I can tell the resolution bump isn’t gonna be a big wow. We’re not suddenly gonna see new tiny rain drops and wrinkles like we could from DVD to BluRay

@@DanielMassey690 You're right. I thought they actually did re-scan the 35mm film based on what PJ said. That explains the more disappointing '4K' resolution. Although if they used the 2K scans, from 1080p to 2K (upressed to 4K) you'd still expect a fair amount of new detail, but I guess not.

You’re not seeing the HDR version on RU-vid. The black levels of the discs on an actual HDR tv are gorgeous. I was comparing Amon Hen shots to the originals, the blacks on the 4K are much richer imo. Things like a pillar the shadow side will be in complete darkness, while in the original movie it’s basically daylight on that side. I personally like the deeper colours over the desaturated look. I think it’s a vast improvement, this video is not representative.
