Tommy's Piano Corner - the place for people getting back into Piano to share hints, tips and ideas of how to get the most from this great hobby.

I'll be uploading:
Videos showing how I am attempting to practice the pieces I'm either learning from scratch or re-learning
Videos based on how modern technology can really be great for any pianist
Videos of the 'finished product' (if a piece can ever be considered finished).

Mainly focussed on returning learners, but equally interesting for anybody passionate about piano.

It is the only way to play jazz is by listening to the masters and then developing you own voice. I find metronome on beats 2 and 4 is great for swing.

My solution to the eighth note runs was slow...slow practice paying very close attention to the position of my 4th and 5th fingers being gentle and firm without the rest of my hand lifting too high up from the keyboard. I gradually build up speed but always go back to super ( almost deadly slow) when i warm up or the speed gets out of control) yuga wangs performance is my inspiration. Variety of speed and touch and accelerando are key to not only making this section interesting but gaining absolute security in playing. Its such a thrill to gain mastery over this waltz.
@TommysPianoCorner
@TommysPianoCorner 7 дней назад
I agree, Yuja Wang plays this exquisitely. I’d love to get a really close view of her hands whilst she plays it. There are places where it is hard to see how she retains such elegance and control - although of course this is probably a ‘sight reading level’ piece for her now. I also need to actively practice it to keep it in my fingers. My favourite way being the 4/4 waltz approach

Very interesting to see spaced repetition and interleaving practice applied to more procedural domains such as piano. I am an expert of spaced repetition and close to an ignorant about piano. Do you use any app to schedule the repetitions such as Anki or Supermemo? (I know some people for the latter and it is excruciatingly rare)
@TommysPianoCorner
@TommysPianoCorner 8 дней назад
I don’t use a specific app. Piano practice contains many elements - memorization, physical coordination, musicality etc and so the best way to use spaced repetition likely depends on the task in hand. For example, some skills if practiced for too long at a time can be injurious and so this needs to be taken into account. Different levels of pianism can mean any one person will have different thresholds of concentration etc. I think the basic approach needs to take this kind of thing into consideration at an individual level

Wonderful selection of pieces put together with great care, great sound, lighting and background. I stopped dead on my tracks on the third Gnossienne that I played years ago with a French teacher. I am now going back to the piano to rework it and see how much comes backs. It has been such a long time. My teacher at the time told me what a funny little man Erik Satie was, eccentric and witty. At the time, I started reading a great deal, not just about Satie, but about the people he hung around with. Apparently there was a bar called “Le Boeuf sur le toit”, in Paris where these artist met, Milhaud, Poulenc, George Auric, Arthur Honegger and Germaine Taileferre. The name remained for a long time but it became a tourist joint. Lili
@TommysPianoCorner
@TommysPianoCorner 20 дней назад
I’m delighted you enjoyed them. I have very much enjoyed learning how to record and create the visuals. Satie was indeed a curious figure. He has a surprisingly wide array of compositions - some almost mainstream (his waltz ‘je te veux’ for example) and others way out there :-) Have you tried the other Gnossiennes too? One day, I might try to record them all.

Which setup would you recommend for doing a piano + cello live stream? Of course several mics would be better though also a lot more complicated to set up and potentially disturbing for the actual concert. Shure has this MV88+ video kit which seems for the beginning very easy.
@TommysPianoCorner
@TommysPianoCorner 20 дней назад
I think you could get away with the MV88+ video kit - however you might want to find an extension cable so that you could place the microphone closer to the instruments and keep the camera a little further away. Another cool option might be the Atem Mini. Basically, it would allow you to plug several microphones and cameras into the device, configure them to your aesthetic and then have a single output of audio/video combined that you can livestream. Atem is one I’m aware of for having seen Josh Wright demonstrate it - there are many other similar devices on the market. So, much really depends on your budget (an Atem type set up would be relatively expensive whereas the MV88+ would be cheap) and equally how much set up you want to do (an atem centric set up would take much more effort to set up and has a big learning curve whereas the MV88+ is pretty much ‘plug and stream’ so to speak. Another consideration is whether or not you’ll have someone on hand to manage/monitor the equipment. If you do, you could change cameras, display titles etc in real time as you stream - could be fun. Perhaps start with the MV88+ and then upgrade later. I suspect there is already enough to think about with just the music and the act of streaming initially without having complex equipment to think about too. Many people livestream just using the inbuilt mic on the phone - although I don’t think I would :-)

I do another type of interleaving, but with the same idea. I usually learn/teach a piece, following the piece order, but interleaving the semi phrases, like semi phrase A, then B, then A B, then C, then D then C D, then ABCD, and then go to the next section. It's usually very efective in order to memorize pieces. For repertoire I use flash cards to organize my study. When I revise pieces I study the one that comes in the top of deck, then if after playing it I feel it still needs work, I put it after the next one on the deck, if it was ok, in the middle of the deck and if it was easy at the bottom of the deck, in that way I guarantee the spacing of the repetition and I give the more difficult pieces more frequent study. 💪
@TommysPianoCorner
@TommysPianoCorner 20 дней назад
I think I use a similar system for some pieces. I think the ‘right’ way to practice a piece very often depends on the piece itself. I showed how I interleaved this particular piece, but for others I would apply the same principle, but execute slightly differently. What you describe makes perfect sense - I’ll definitely see how I might incorporate that into my own practice !

Nevertheless, I have experienced that pausing frequently during a practice session gives better results. I just discovered your channel through this video. I really like the concept and will try it - so thank you for the video. Apologies if this is addressed in another video, but would you do this multiple pieces at once? For example, if you were going to practice for 1-2 hours, would you do 20 mins (to use you the example in the video) on this piece, then move to another and apply the same technique?
@TommysPianoCorner
@TommysPianoCorner 23 дня назад
I’m pleased the idea interests you. I tend to work on several pieces at the same time as I practice for around 3 hours most days. I do use this technique with all of my pieces now. If I’m trying to finish a piece for a deadline, then I’ll often interleave it by practising it for 20/25 minutes, move on to some other pieces and then come back to it on the same day. Once you get into the habit, you’ll likely find that you just sort of do it without really thinking about it :-) Let me know how you get on.
@thekeyoflifepiano
@thekeyoflifepiano 24 дня назад
I can't remember the source, however the music psychologist Noa Kageyama had a blog article where he talked about interleaving is the more effective practice technique (compared to not interleaving) , despite the fact that it feels less effective from the point of view of the learner.
@TommysPianoCorner
@TommysPianoCorner 24 дня назад
I think from the learner’s point of view it can feel like a lot of bother and we often just want a ‘simple hack’ that will do the trick. I think that often (although perhaps not always) complex problems will need a rather more sophisticated solution. Where I find the real value here lies is on limiting the amount of material used so that we can ‘boil water’ so to speak

Quite by coincidence I just looked at this prelude for the first time today, its been on my wish list for a while and I recently got the score. I'm not sure if I'm going to work on it yet though as have multiple other pieces on the go, but when I do I might try your approach as I tend to just work methodically from beginning to end so it could be an interesting experiment.

I’m also a returning pianist. I was about Turkish March level when I stopped 20 years ago as a child. I’m lucky that I found a great teacher this time and she helped me progressed faster this time. In the past three years, We played through Chopin waltz, nocturnes. I spent almost a year working on fantasie impromptu and I finally able to play it at reasonable speed. Looks like we have a similar story and face similar challenges! Speed was always my nemesis and I avoided dealing with it by simply avoiding anything fast lol. Even something like Turkish March I would avoid as there are a couple of ‘fast’ passages in it! Oddly, I could comfortably play some nocturnes, Clair de Lune, Liebestraum yet wouldn’t even contemplate Turkish March. Since restarting, I have been on a mission to learn to play fast - which is paying off as now I would say I can play fast, just not as consistently as I’d like. @TommysPianoCorner 3 месяца назад
Yes, it can be very tricky to get used to triplets over 8th notes. There are a few sayings that people use such as 'nice cup of tea' where you start with the first two notes together, then spread the others over the remaining words (so, second triplet with 'cup', second 8th note with 'of' and the third triplet with 'tea'. Another thing that can be very helpful is to practice other pieces where the melody alternates between standard 8th notes and triplet 8th notes. There are lots of such patterns in Scarlatti and Mozart for example. Also, try looking at pieces that use a similar pattern. There's a nice little piece called Romance Poudrée by Jules Burgmein for example where there are lots of examples of it.

Theoretically it can - depending on the settings used. However, aggressive limiting we use, the more obvious it becomes. I personally would try as much as possible to set the gain such that we don’t clip and perhaps consider adding gentle limiting as a fail safe :-)

Bellissimo!

They're called trills

I can never decide when something should be a mordent or a trill. I have seen both used when describing music from different periods. Always leaves me confused I have to admit :-)
