Sometimes I feel like talking in the background while in the car, if I could just do a voice over easily with a blank background I likely would. I have other uniformed content that shows me talking. Shaun at Security and Investigations Leadership channel started doing vlogging in the car as well...I got the inspiration from him. I guess I just want to get the content out there.

Depends who you work for. Allied Universal is generally hands off, observe and report. The Guard in this case, likely approached the perpetrator and advised him to leave. Verbally telling someone to vacate the property and escorting them from the property are common duties for mall security. Telling someone they can’t sleep or camp in the mall, is a normal security duty not necessarily law enforcement which means the guard would have interacted with the perpetrator as a hands off or on officer. Going hands on, having the training and tools, would be after the threat and not simply for sleeping. Having typical mall security observe and report post orders would not have stopped this. Clearly the perp escalated this above a simple order to leave.

Yes. He should be recognized. I want to add his response was a trained one, the skills he demonstrated were pretty textbook for an explosive threat. The failures were allowing the active threat to get so close, out of the guards control in the moment.

Search and Seizure, Self Incrimination, Due Process....Deprivation of Life and Liberty all important topics. Since the short presentation wasn't meant to cover all topics, it's important to note Police Explorers are exposed to city, state and federal criminal process and rights / protections everyone has. Constitutional law is apart of that. Being teens, they are not training to be police officers, or other custodial staff positions. They are being given broad skills sets to decide what they want to do. Law Enforcement may not be for them. I know of several who became Fire Fighters, Funeral Services, Medical RN/ EMS, and Military....

Corrections officer is a misnomer. It's nothing more than a politically correct way of saying prison guard. They guard the prisoners, but they don't actually correct anything.
@UniversitySecurity
@UniversitySecurity 29 дней назад
Jail's in the United States are primarily pre-conviction / pre-trial confinement. The historic term of jailer does not encompass or convey the duties of a modern-day Jailer assigned deputy or Corrections Officer...Sworn or Non-Sworn Officers can be assigned to the facility. So where does that leave us? Prison Guards work post-conviction. Usually work around the same inmates for years. Inmates in jail are not convicted and come and go. So I am not sure I agree with your assumption or if it is easy to assign a title to the Officers that fulfill these roles. Rehabilitation isn't easy in a jail setting....GED programs usually exist but the inmates can come and go as I stated before finishing their programs. Not a heck of a lot of success. They do learn basic janitorial skills, maintenance / landscaping, and kitchen work. It's not much but some do try to use it as a job experience.

I worked as a Correction Officer for 28 years in Pennsylvania. This tray is a typical tray. A bag lunch was served to the inmates when the jail was on lockdown, they missed a meal due to an outside trip to a doctor, or being transported to a different jail. They had 2 bologna sandwiches, a couple of mustard packs , an apple and a milk. Diabetic inmates got a diabetic bag in the evenings before evening lock down. They had graham crackers and a fruit, like an apple or pear. There were special diet trays for some inmates, and for Muslims there were Ramadan meals during Ramadan. No pork was served and very seldom beef was served except for beef liver and onion day. The trash cans in the dinning hall got full real quick those days. The only thing I really didn't let leave the dinning hall were bananas. The inmates would flush the banana peels and clog the toilets up. The plumber would have to be called to unclog the toilets. I never worried about bread or cookies. Although, some inmates made wine from the bread. Some bread, sugar, drink mix and jelly will brew you up some hooch to get drunk on.

You wouldn’t believe how many have claimed I am lying about what is normal or typical. Most COs don’t want to get in a use of force over food, most don’t want to be taken advantage of either. A lot of things go into it…food means a lot in institutions where inmates don’t have a lot. Make sure all inmates get what they are supposed to have, don’t short the PC inmates…watch the trustees they could target PC inmates for a verity of reasons. Food / Tray pass needs to be taken seriously.

@@UniversitySecurity I once was pulled to pick trays up that I didn't pass out. I had no idea what was on the trays. I found out they had ketchup packs on the trays. When I got to the one cell the inmate was what i thought getting sick in the toilet. He was vomiting red stuff up. I stopped and went down to call medical to come up. He really had me fooled. He was laughing and calling me a fool. The other inmates attacked him because if there was someone getting sick for real, they didn't want me to think they were fooling me also. I wrote him up for disrupting normal business of the institution. He got another 15 days in the restrictive housing unit.

Logan Gimbel is a clown. He’s lucky he didn’t pull a gun on the wrong one, because this guy would be put in the ground. He murdered an innocent man, he escalated it. The company he worked for Cornerstone security group” out of Sunnyside, Oregon made statements in their reviews trying to lie. I left a review and called them out. Everyone here should leave a negative review on this company. No family should go through what Freddy Nelsons family went through. We need to make sure people are aware of this security company that cuts corners and allows their guards to carry guns when they’re not licensed to do so. Google Cornerstone Security Group in Sunnyside, Oregon.

Sadly the licensing process would not have prevented this. He had completed the required class to get a license and nothing in his background would have prevented it from being issued. This came down to a key conceptional issues with what he thought his job was and is inability to disengage from a situation that was quickly going South. Some states require psychological screenings to be an Armed Officer…As far as I know this is not required in Oregon, this may have helped. Interviewers have to assess problem solving skills and anger management…Sometimes the need for officers clouds best judgement. I also I want add, I don’t believe he was trying to act like a law enforcement officer either. The deployment of OC was clearly out of annoyance, anger in my opinion (he was charged and convicted for unlawful force as well). He should have simply stepped aside and called law enforcement when they entered their vehicle. They were not an active threat to the property, client, or assets.

This is pretty accurate to what we served. We were required to pick random trays and eat the same food that inmates were. It wasn’t the best food I have ever had but it was far from the worse. Having served in the military, our daily was comparable at times to what was served in our jail. Some people have experiences in facilities with absolutely horrible food….It has to be nutritionally there, it doesn’t have to taste good. That’s a reality. People seem to have this concept that their experience in prison or jail from other parts of the country must be how it is everywhere else. I can tell you we did NOT serve blended food combos or meatloafs which are served in some facilities in violent / suicide prevention cells. Our Sheriff started his career in corrections and made it clear he wanted to maintain a certain standard.

My state does not differentiate between attempting to cause vs actually causing injury or even a risk of injury, all are considered assault. We do have a separate statute criminalizing making a threat of violence which prohibits making any threat to commit violence and/or acting with intent to place someone in fear of injury. All important distinctions. Security officers should definitely be familiar with local statutes. Thanks for sharing.

This type of site likely shouldn’t have been unarmed. Unarmed officers should be backed by armed officers on site or onsite law enforcement. TSA is an example of this… Hybrid model. Let’s be honest, solely unarmed officers are customer service representatives that are meant for secured, controlled access, and vetted client employee base. This limits exposure. Rarely is it done this way…clients give very little thought to the risk of going to a transients room or mentally ills. Drugs, violence, pimps all too common.

I think I missed the mark on this video, another poster got the impression I was suggesting you can’t have a discussion with command staff on policies that concern you. I have always believed in an open door, communication, policy. Grievances need to be heard and acknowledged. Command doesn’t need to agree either, listening is not agreeing.. an officer needs to accept that. That being said if you don’t agree but say you do and decide to go rogue on all sorts of things… that’s not okay either.

I agree on nothing but company patches only. Professionalism is key. Having said that, if the company is not making the mark, they are engaged in unprofessional ways or you have an issue with a policy, its got to be addressed. It has to be addressed in a professional and respectful way. If the company does not give you a good answer, you might want to look for a better company. If any of my Officers are unclear or even in disagreement on a policy, I want them to question it in a respectful, professional manner and at the right times. Everyone has to be on the same page for cohesion, saftey and liability. And as a Supervisor/Company Owner, I want to know my guys are clear on all policies and procedures. Regular post checks and evaluations aid in that effort. Coaching is important and the Officers should feel open to address any and all concerns. Also, if you have san Officer that is a bit too contrarian, the open door policy will help identify that as well and aid in coaching, reprimanding or parting ways. I wouldn't recommend guards mindlessly follow whatever their supervisor dictates, nor would I advocate questioning everything either. But a good guard can use the OODA loop in these situations as well. Critical thinking and doing what is right is key. Having said that. I've lost a few jobs in security when questioning practices, policies and edicts however it was for the right reasons not over patches or dumb crap. But that led me to building my own company.
@UniversitySecurity
@UniversitySecurity 2 месяца назад
The issue is not questioning the policy or changing it, it's going into situations that can be avoided and directly stating you will go against policy from the start in those types of situations. Taking a job, agreeing to the expected conduct and openly stating you don't care to other officers. Bringing weapons on site, going hands on in non-self defense encounters, ext. If you don't agree with conduct expectations, you have the right to find another job that better suits your expectations / mindset. That is was my gripe. We can learn, and conduct after action reviews and change. There is nothing mindless about that process. Saying you agree to policies and procedures, acknowledging the review of them and saying in private / online that you don't care...That is an issue. That is not bringing up to management your concerns, it's indifference to command staff policy making. Maybe the video lost it's mark, my issue was about Officer's stating they would follow the policy to their company but openly disregard it in private. Bringing firearms to a unarmed site....Is one major issue I can think of in recent comments.

@@UniversitySecurity obviously you didn't fully read or comprehend what was being stated. I agree with what you are saying. You obviously worked for Grade A Security companies where you not had to question their policies and procedures. You never were removed from as a regional manager for requiring drug tests and higher standards. You obviously never worked for a security company that was engaged in less the ethical practices and had to speak up on that, again resulting in your termination. And I'm sure you never went against you company policy on not wearing a med kit as its "too tactical looking," only to see that same companies policy change after you had to stop blood loss on a gunshot victim in a housing complex.
