35:38 is a mistake , the way you set it up makes it that you will load 80% of the available space of each , meaning even at "full" of both you will still have a few empty cars. set one of the resource to 50% and leave the other at 100 so that the other will take all the available space in the train
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 3 дня назад
I was under the impression that was the maximum allowable load for that resource on the train so as long as it adds up to more than 100% then the train can leave fully loaded. I could be wrong though so thanks for bringing that to my attention, I'll look into that a little more closely.

Once you're ready to deliver more cargo to those big three cities, I think you should start by using that Construction Materials Factory in Houston with the quarry close-by. It's an easy delivery for Houston and you can use the same cargo train for SLC. Also, maybe you could group those four farms together closer to the Food Factory and truck ALL the grain there. It'll make profit regardless of food demand, and you're future proofing at the same time while cutting out that shipping route to Portland like @ymeshulin another commenter said. And since you're starting the next episode by reviewing rates, just go through the vehicle list and upgrade all possible trucks. It might help with the traffic problems.
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 17 дней назад
I'll look into that construction materials line, thanks for pointing that out! As for the food processing line, I am hesitant to switch to all trucks because that would generate a lot of truck traffic in the food processing plant and we would start to limit ourselves with how many truck we can fit on the roads. I believe we will unlock a bigger truck in about a year or two in game, so depending on how much capacity those have, at that point I think it might be logical to make that switch.
@ymeshulin
@ymeshulin 17 дней назад
What's the point of bringing food into Portland by boat, when you have SLC demanding food as well? Ship food to the big hub, take some by truck into SLC, the rest should go by train to Portland. Same wagons, almost full both ways... You've got to up your game. 🙂
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 17 дней назад
I am bringing food into Portland by boat because we are bringing grain to that food processing plant by boat. That way the boat delivers a full load of grain at the food processing plant and returns with a full load of food to be trucked into Portland. We also end up with more dispersed truck traffic into Portland which is an issue we are currently dealing with in Houston. I do see your point, but at the moment I have to choose between having boats run empty on the return trip or the train return partially empty. There is an argument to be made that the boat line does not need to exist and everything could be trucked to the food processing plant, however that would clog up our road heading into the food processing plant.

I think you should make a unified line on the new 'Mainline', instead of running three separate services. Yes, with separate services you can do better load balancing, but ultimately, your passenger numbers will eventually even out across most cities, and your population will appreciate lack of requirement to switch trains. Also I'd recommend terminating most of your Houston lines at that big bus / tram station opposite the rail station. Again, you will remove the requirement to switch between lines, which would also lead to requiring less vehicles on each line.

There is an ore mine on the peninsula across the bay of Roswell. Your machines line passes by it, and you can carry ore back on the ship. But in general, I can't really see why you think a ship line is more useful in this scenario than running trains. Ships are inevitable when you have large bodies of water to cross, but running ships down small rivers when you have plenty of building space for railways that would carry more cargo at far greater speeds is questionable. But always good for diversity. 🙂
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 29 дней назад
That's a good point. I went with the boats because it required a lot less initial money to get it running. Having a train running between the Machines industry and Roswell probably would have required a fairly large tunnel. We also had some existing infrastructure set up so the only thing to do was add boats running from Pittsburgh to Roswell. Although I suppose I spent a lot of money widening the river so in hindsight either option would have costed about the same. I'll probably switch that line to a train once we get a hub set up nearby.

For the fuel situation in Tacoma and Lincoln, there's an oil refinery in Tacoma and a Fuel production industry near Lincoln. You could have a cargo train or boat line going back and forth, making money both ways. You would still need to get crude oil elsewhere. Eventually you might upgrade this line to carry mixed goods between the two cities. Also, it seems you're starting to get slowed down because of the available vehicles. Maybe for like two episodes, you can put year speed a bit faster. Great video as always.
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 29 дней назад
Good suggestion, I'll look into that area. I have the date speed set pretty slow so I can focus on detailing and not have to worry about years going by. This also allows us to fully explore each vehicle era without having to rush to set things up. But I am not opposed to changing the speed if it feels like we get stuck.

I know I'm repeating myself, but excellent work on the episode, very well done! Good job on the line, and I liked that funky looped approach to the Salt Lake City cargo station. This being said, there is not much benefit to such a setup, as you could have easily put a pass-through cargo station right on that mainline where the bridge lands on the SLC side. Some careful rail configuration to allow seamless passenger train passing, and you're golden. Also the fact that the station would be elevated in relation to the city and it's road network, would allow for some nice looking road cargo setups. The current setup is totally fine, but it's slightly unrealistic. Tacoma needs to be connected to Houston by rail, and the two passenger lines need to be unified. The issue with Lincoln - Tacoma line is that it only goes to one place, hence the somewhat low-ish demand. Connecting it to more cities would do the trick. You now need more signals on the 'Mainline'. I would highly recommend to start thinking 2000s already in terms of building for the future - you will have more trains running there, and quad-tracking the whole line won't be out of the conversation by 1950s. The fuel boat is a silly idea, as it will never earn you a single penny. I'd build a nice road bridge and employ 1-2 trucks on fuel delivery into Portland. The city will start demanding tools one day anyway, so you do want to have a plug & play infrastructure ready for that. Rosewell - given the potentially large amounts of cargo coming into it in the future, I think it would make sense to build a rail / shipping hub on the peninsula just across the bay, between the iron ore mine and oil refinery. You can then ship all sorts of goods there in bulk by rail, transfer them onto ships and move into Rosewell with just one or two ships. The hub can also serve the nearby industries as well. Finally, you ought to aggressively stay on top of your inner city passenger demands. Houston already has plenty of underserved population. I would expand the bus network, maybe even already build stops on those empty streets - just to buy yourself 10-15 years of worry-free time.

Really enjoyed the episode. Somehow you have managed to pack a lot of progress into it, which is a welcome change after a couple of slower episodes. A couple of observations though, if I may: - I think using ships for delivering tools is not the best move. You already have that passenger line in place, which you can begin using as the backbone of your rail network. The frequency of your passenger traffic would allow you to stick with two tracks for now, as long as you ensure the speeds of all trains are identical or very close to being so. Trains are faster, and you can run one train with two (or more) drop off points along the way. Also, cargo type and availability permitting, you may begin to load the trains up on their return trip as well. - Your passenger trainline is / will be making you tons of money actually, but with the current frequency of 16 minutes it's a matter of when you actually look at the graph. 🙂 I think you are at a point where you have enough types of cargo moving to enough destinations to begin thinking about optimizing some of your networks. Not necessarily now, but a wider look at the map may bring some ideas about lines that transport cargo to both directions, thus bringing you more income. Again, great job as always, and looking forward to the next episode. Really enjoying your relaxed narration style and the video production that goes into this series.
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect Месяц назад
Thanks for the support and feedback as always! I completely agree with using trains and using our existing rail to deliver tools. I opted for boats at first because I knew they were less risky in terms of money than setting up a train line. But now that we can see that it works and we have plans to move fuel around the area, I agree switching to trains would be better.
