ALX-106 is the musical moniker if Alex Anderson, aka Nasty Nachos, aka Alex from WMD “, aka A in AMMT. Host of Freq Boutique and Patched Out!
ALX-106 is the exploration of everything that I love about electronic music and making it live with hardware. On this channel, I feature live performances of full sets, individual jams, tutorials and more. I am actively working on pushing the boundaries of my live performances and what is possible on the eurorack modular synthesizer instrument.

Dope was looking for something like this to share with someone glad i found it. I love this synth. I have a rev2, take 5, bs2 and this and it complements each of them so well. Use your jam points and their 50% off sale🎉
All seems logical to listen and read and watch, but anything I change on configuration tool does not change anything, and if relaod/rquest all settings are still in default state. What I'm missing :D?
PP+ seems introduces artifacts for me when USB to DAW. Like if sample rate is too low and system choking. My Live 12 project is not busy, tracks are frozen. Any sample rate. It’s on M1 Studio which is hard to overload really. Any know-how making it smooth?
How would you incorporate a ‘standard’ channel mixer into a pick-and-place concept…? Because one could have multiple different sounds / samples on one track or lane. I guess the same problem occurs when streaming and mixing in the DAW like you do here, or do you get a separate stream / channel per sample or instrument…? Otherwise, if #Polyend wants to solve this problem, every step should have a ‘send to audio bus’ setting by which you could route the sample or synth to an overall mixer with at least 8 channels. STEMS and streams should obey those channel routings, too. You also use MIDI in your demo, which I think works a little different as your external gear could have separate outputs.
I think there could still be a per track master mixer that would let you just change it as soon as you hear it. Chances are if I need to turn a track down, everything on the track needs to come down. Granularity is nice, but just a quick adjust over the track is what I am used to. The Midi stuff is helpful for sure for getting tracks. As you could see, I grouped a lot of stuff coming out of the play anyway, but having access to individual tracks is awesome for effects, sweepable filters, and quick adjustments for the room in a live environment.
@@alx-106 yes, I totally agree on a master mixer. But if they would implement it, then hopefully in way that would preserve the flexibility of the Play sequencer, so not degrading it to ‘standard’ tracks.
Why do use modular at all in this setup? The polyend play sort of does what the Assimil8or does and Bitwig could probably do whatever else is going on right? This is a genuine question not trying to be a twerp.
Mainly just interface and comfortability. Bitwig could really do everything but I’d rather use the play’s button interface and the Pizza for the same… assimil8or helps keep channel count down and such as well.
@@alx-106also just curious, why is your modular hardware setup getting smaller? Is it also because of space and transportation? Bitwig for mixing is a cool idea so.
@@effiksmusic I can’t speak for Alx but as someone who gets on an airplane with musical instruments many times each year, I can say that the in-cabin luggage lottery is getting really insane. I’m at the point where flying business class is the only option that feels relatively safe in terms of getting an instrument to a show w/o checking it. Getting the instruments physically smaller for travel reasons is the only way forward.
@@effiksmusic It's mostly an experiement at this moment to push myself in different directions and learn the ins and outs of other gear. I am also trying to figure out the perfect sweet spot for traveling. I fly a lot and am commonly at the back of the boarding line where they ask people to check their roller bags. I have actually never had any trouble with my 6U 104 HO Submodular case, even in these last one on situations, but the anxiety is real and I am looking for good solutions that I can recommend to others. This video likely isnt the way I'll do things as I really do miss Metron and Voltera even though Play is like 80% there... But for people that are using the Play already, I wanted to show how the USB streaming is working and hopefully give some itdeas along the way.
@@GahlordDewald I fly a ton too, and am mostly in the later boarding groups so I am looking for backpack solutions to qualm my anxiety for sure. Another thing I just remembered about this is that I'm trying to make my system small so I fit on any table for any gig without causing any issue for the venue or other performers. Space has been a concern for the duo with Trovarsi, so anything I can do to sneak onto a crowded table is good right now.
As a total noob to Eurorack modules this seems quite interesting. Not only as my lastname is Rossum, but I’m considering a modular setup, mainly for FX purposes, over an Elektron Analog +FX. Could you probably tell me what modules I definitely should have a look at to mimic that?
Cool demo. With the size of that VCA, it is bang on with most other Stereo VCAs, those other 2 or stereo channel they can also be your send to effects.
Alex, thanks so much for the rundown! How do you deal with latency when using Bitwig as effects processor for the modular for short time based effects (like frequency shifter, phaser, flanger)...effects that rely on original and effected signal being under 20ms apart, but your Bitwig audio buffer is probably around 5-15ms?
I honestly haven’t done much with those types of effects but the latency is great and the compensation they have in clicks and hardware instruments make it really easy to dial in to where I don’t thing that would be an issue.
This is so so sick. I've been heading more into a 'Dual FX Processor' for my eurorack, but I really wanna get back to using Bitwig for live stuff with it.
That’s a good way to go for sure. I want more fx in the rack. Check out how glitch mob plays. Great example of a hardware fx box. Also, the new 4ms catalyst controller is epic for an fx system
Fantastic stuff, Alex! Really liked this, high quality house, great attitude. And yes please record the set for us. Techno was great too, more of that as well please. You’re inspiring me to do more music at the moment, which I’m really enjoying, so thanks for that! Keep up the good work
I used Bitwig for a few years and then went back to Ableton when the Launchpad Mk3 came out because I loved that thing and Bitwig didn't support it. They announced Novation comaptibility last year at some point so I opened it up again and then ended up getting back into the upgrade path. Personally, I think the hardware implimentation is easier and better. Also, Hybrid tracks are sick, although I dont use them a ton, I love that I can put an audio track on a midi track. next plus is that I love noodling in the grid and making up module ideas inside of there and then controlling them with CV so they feel like they are a part of the system. I still use Ableton for certain production things but for live performance, I have just really enjoyed everything Bitwig has to offer. (sorry for writing a book here)
Oh wow! I didn’t realize Novation added native launchpad pro mk3 support for bitwig! I actually stayed with ableton just because of proper Launchpad/launch control functionality. I will definitely get back into bitwig, as i use an es-8/es-6 combo, and i agree that bitwig is better with eurorack/hardware integration. No need to apologize for your detailed book of a response 🤣. sharing the knowledge is always great, and it helps to hear other people’s point of view. Keep up the good work man! 🔥
Thank you for videos, do you feel a little bit of latency when you trigger Midi from Bitwig to an External Hardware synth compared to CV to say Assima8or from Bitwig? Also do you think it is tighter to send CV clock out to external gear or Midi clock, with ES-8 you get 8 CV outs and sometimes a midi makes sense to keep the system small. Thank you.
The hardware instruments in bitwig feel really tight to me. They have a button that you click and then it triggers the external synth, measures the time it takes to hear the audio from it, then adjusts the latency accordingly. That is super helpful. I prefer using the clock out of ES9 if I can for sure. If I'm going to use MIDI, then I want an external thing to keep everything together like the Circuit Happy Missing Link, which I love as well.
Holy shit, this is epic!! I love how outstanding your mix is while making the commentary sound like we stroll through a park together 😄 Do you ever perform live? If so, please come to Amsterdam 🙌
Thanks so much! Yeah I play live a ton. I played in my duo with Trovarsi at ADE last year with Analog Kitchen and an amazing crew! I hope to come back soon, but not sure about ADE this year.
Very cool demo of a much underrated synth 😮😎 I can’t understand why even IK Multimedia doesn’t push this thing a bit more, because it’s an awesome and very capable little workhorse! So much fun ad very versatile 👌🏻
Great video! That zero crossing detector is so good! I’ve definitely had to work through pops of various types and sometimes even when you use the sync, it can accentuate the pops depending on your signal path. I don’t have space at the moment but when I do at some point add another row, that might be an amazing bit of utility to have. Thanks for explaining it so well!
Thank you for showing this is stereo. I wrote it off in your WMD vid because everything new is stereo for the rack. I have everything I need for my remaining mono voices. Defiantly interested as I’m always forced to slow my attacks on bass which is ok most times, but also really limiting. Bass is king in my tracks. I’ll pick this up when my rack that needs my veils, and fill my hole!
Yo alex! You're pretty dammn good house producer! Would be great if you can show us how you treat the modular to come up with those beats. Especially the drums sounding so good 👍🏽
Same for me. I can now imagine what tornment and frustration I need to go through with Ableton support. I didn't expect I find you when looking for this problem in RU-vid. I have some WMD Devices modules :). Nice jam - eurorack still reliable.
Hey! Yes, I have a DI box on my table that then runs over to my mixer which is in the back corner of that room (right behind me in this video). I could use TRS to XLR cables as the ES9 has balanced outputs but I just use the DI literally because it is heavy and stays on the desk, making it super convenient to come and go as I just leave it on the desk when I go play shows. No other reason than that. Just cable management OCD disguised as convenience. I wouldn't recommend anyone buying a DI for this purpose at all, it was just something I had laying around that made its way onto the table.
Hey man can you recommend the es-9 for pretty good audio quality? Have you tried the es-3/6? They sound ok but they aren’t as clean guess as my interface.
Can you do multi and poly at the same time? Oxi One has 4 sequencers in it and can to poly one one, chord on another, multi on another and whatever on a 4th.
Been doing this with my Digitakt for a while now. Just got lost in cables for drums and started with Digi self sequencing then moved to OxiOne to sequence everything. I love it. Would love to figure out a way to play multi samples on one lane like you did with the rim shots. I am keeping my eye out for a rack sampler, but the Digi being portable keeps bringing me back to just keeping it. If I could figure out how to change a sample bank with notes like you did, I would be very happy as that feature is lost sequencing in Oxi vs on Digitakt….. Nice vid. Let’s get some e subscribers in here. Always love your jams.
