Shay’s back! And this week, we go back to our traditional style of doing episodes together, aka the ones you all loved so much! This weeks topic is one that has been weighing heavy in our marriage of the last few years. We recently unpacked it more through therapy and discovered that it was deeper than we thought. So, what do we do? We have an episode on it haha. This is part 1 of 2 and the 2nd part is with a guest who is very familiar with this topic. We bring on Lauren Morrison in Part 2 and you won’t want to miss that one either! But for now, sit back, relax and enjoy the Davis’s air out more personal’s about our marriage haha!
Also, don't forget to like, subscribe & turn on your notifications so you don't miss out on an episode! Thank you to everyone who has already!

I notice that women start to feel strong resentment a few years into relationships. I think we spend the beginning bending and giving a lot of grace and understanding and often that means swallowing our opinions and feelings and intuition to make it easier for the man/to be liked. This is low key expected of us and a sign of being a “good wife”. But there’s only so much of that you can take before you burst. It’s great that they are handling the bursting very maturely and caught it before she was DONE done.

I think you’re right. Women see that their emotional, sexual and domestic investments dont seem to yield much of a return and they become tired and start to disinvest. It’s why you get the “walkaway wife” syndrome.

Thank you guys for being so open & raw. Thank for letting us in to this discussion. I love how vulnerable you both allow yourself to be and how relatable this is. Shay makes my heart want to cry. She is EVERYTHING! She’s beautiful, she’s so pure, she’s got an amazing perspective & I appreciate how she carries herself. Can’t wait for part 2 baby!

Loved this conversation - it’s so real, and resentment is a HUGE part of relationships (romantic or otherwise) so it’s deeply relatable. Something I found mindblowingly helpful to dealing with my resentment was learning research shows resentment is part of the envy family when it comes to emotions (shout out to Brené Brown for teaching me that gem) so exploring ‘what is it that I’m envious of this other person doing or (more often) not doing that’s contributing to me feeling this way’ is a really amazing way to explore our own resentment and move through it. Big love to you both; thank you for sharing, truly. 💕✨

Thanks for the gem Rosie! I completely agree. Shay mentioned that in the episode about how I'm the one with the office and not her. How We want to buy a house and I was the one holding us back, etc. Great perspective!

Thank you guys for sharing!! I love the idea of a letter. I’m like you Justin I have that out-of-body experience when I write my feelings, the words just flow and I’m able to express what I need to much better in writing. Definitely got some great insight here! Can’t wait for Lauren’s

Thank you for letting us in on this beautiful conversation. 32:54 - I feel that so deeply. Shay is 100% correct, resentment killed my almost 10 year relationship. My partner would not show up or validate my resentment even though his emotional(and possibly physical) infidelity was the catalyst for our downward spiral. I tried for a year but there was no accountability or action that I could see. He would not attend couples therapy and said that since we were trying I simply had to trust him. No transparency, no accountability with anyone. That just caused me to resent him and distance myself. I had to choose my own peace and we broke up. I never want to feel that type of resentment for someone I love ever again and my next relationship I will go into with transparency and honesty as core values…and the willingness to attend therapy individually and together! Thank you for showing me what a healthy relationship can look like.

This was such a must needed to hear episode, like even for people like me who's single, I can relate to building resentment in past relationships, to the point it broke it up. If you dont catch it, which it is hard to define, it builds up and make you wanna be separate away from your spouse, because your unknowling still holding onto things you thought you moved passed. It's nice that you'll have a safe space also made me think of maybe every few months spouses need to check in with each other emotionally and see how the persons really doing. Great content, I will be buying merch soon!

Thank you guys for being so open and vulnerable. Sharing these things is very huge, you have no idea how much this helped just from relatability. Often feeling like should we feel this way in our relationships and knowing others go through it too.

Hi, Justin! I just started listening. I saw you both on MAFS On the Couch. I just wanted to AGREE so much with you about one of the couples. The husband, Chris WAS TOTALLY comforting his wife by rubbing her shoulder, arm and HEAD --Just like he was rubbing a dog! To me, that really tells a ton about a person’s sensuality (or lack thereof), almost as much as watching a person DANCE!!!! Oh, it was so painful to watch him!!! Thanks for commenting on that!! We all saw it with you!!!!

Wow. Thank you both for being so vulnerable and open with us. Your guys love and relationship is honestly so beautiful. I feel like this is what relationships and marriage is about. It’s about learning eachother and having to get uncomfortable before being able to get comfortable and grow WITH eachother. You guys give me hope. It takes a lot of effort to make relationships work in general. I wish you both nothing but love and happiness in this journey 💕 can’t wait for part 2!!

Thank you so much for sharing this raw, extremely vulnerable trial you two went through. I am so glad you guys are working on this. I do wonder if Shay voiced her concerns in a respectful, kind manner as these problems came up time and time again…would this have not lighten the load of her resentment? I understand that things happen EXACTLY the way they are supposed to, and that there are no coincidences (now you two have shared this valuable story with us, that I’m sure will help many people). But to play devils advocate, what if this could have been avoided by thoughtful communication from the get-go? Again, Thank you so much Shay and Justin for your thought provoking content. ❤️

This reminds me of something they said on the “Relationship Theory” channel, where they think of the relationship in terms of a tennis match when a problem arises. It’s not a singles match, it’s a doubles match where you and your partner are in the same side of the net. They explain it better than I just did though 😅

Hard for me to feel like I could ever find someone who could give me the space when I need like that and the support / vice versa in tough situations in my current stage of life. I feel like friends who I have known for years will easily end friendships from resentment built up as well. Maybe you two can do an episode of adult friendships? Romantically, I can't even think about the capacity of that, I feel like people are so jaded with big egos. No patience or any sort of working on self, it's just drop and onto the next. I'm jaded.
