I found a major oil and coolant leak on my son's 2007 Ford F-150 Lariat 4x4 with the dreaded 5.4 3V engine. I show you the aftermath and walk you through the repair along with some tips on how to save a $200 oil filter adaptor instead of having to replace it. Also, I try out a new TOOL!

After watching your video on the repair of the oil filter adaptor gasket for a number of times, I finally started to do the same repair in my 2004 Expedition (4X4) with over 405,400 miles. And since I don't have the luxury of a high lift to stand underneath the vehicle while doing the repair, I just used a pair of ramps, jack stands, and rear tire chocks for added security. I immediately noticed that I would not be able to put my hands near the oil filter adaptor due to lack of space, so to remedy this I removed the fan, the shroud, and the radiator. And I had to cut both radiator hoses that feed into the oil filter adaptor in order to remove them cause they were really stuck and would not move at all. This finally gave me the access I needed to loosen the 4 bolts, which I think had never been removed. In order to loosen and remove the 4 bolts, I combined three 1/4" drive extentions and used a 10mm 1/4" drive socket to accomplish this task. I removed the oil pressure switch from the oil filter adaptor after having removed the oil filter adaptor from the engine, since it is much easier this way than with the adaptor mounted on the engine. Besides the gasket I had to replace the oil filter adaptor with a new one cause the old one was in very poor shape. I checked with three local repair shops and their prices ranged from $275 to $380. It was very nice from your behalf to upload this video cause it made me realize that this job can be done by a DIY'er, and it's the reason why I did it by myself! I greatly appreciate your efforts, and I hope you upload a video of a timing job on a Ford 5.4L 2 Valve. Thanks again!

This by far the BEST VIDEO, wish I had seen it sooner, after research i purchased a oil cooler for my 2013 Ford Expedition, to find out it doesn't even have one, my oil looks fine after draining, no froth, antifreeze had maybe a 1/2 cup of oil floating on top of orange antifreeze that ford no longer makes, so at that point i called ford dealer parts, so i didn't buy the most expensive oil an filter, or antifreeze antifreeze, gonna flush with. Dawn dishliquid, an water a couple times, then BLUE DEVIL, All at operating temperature only, then add my cheaper Antifreeze for maybe a few thousand miles 😉

If you change this gasket, which I just finished doing, make sure you dont just slip in a new gasket like some videos show. You 100% want to remove the oil filter adapter and clean its mating surface as well as the mating surface on the engine block as there can be raised areas from corossion, etc, that needs scraped off or even sanded with very fine sand paper. I was able to use a chisel..very very carefully because of the aluminum, just enough to get the biggest debris loose then switched to a green pad with brake clean. If you dont do this and get both surfaces nice and flat you'll be doing this entire job again and not a quick and easy job. Hope this helps someone avoid a hassle.

My f350 5.4 2002 has been leaking some mechanic told me that the head was leaking between the block in the head so I thought I needed a new engine because it’s too expensive just to fix that. Anyhow, if I can get my truck up on the lift, I’ll fix that shit myself a shirt. Sorry.

I was afraid to drive mine when I saw oil in the radiator, but after draining the oil an antifreeze, better Safe than Sorry, 65 yr ols disabled, my son is helping me!!!😊

If you have oil in the radiator something serious is wrong. Stop driving immediately. Have an exhaust gas test run on the cooling system. Could be a blown head gasket or worse.

I just discovered I have this leak. I've also started to get a missfire on cylider #1. Someone mentioned in the fordforums the following which made me wonder. "I'm assuming you've already changed the valve cover and timing cover gaskets. Did you put sealant where it's recommended? I'd replace the oil pan gasket, too. Only recommending this, since the engine crankcase ventilation system keeps the inside of the engine at negative pressure, so any place that a gasket is bad, it pulls in unmetered air, and causes the engine to run rough." So, based on that. Could a leaking oil filter housing cause the missfire?

Wonderful video, thank you for sharing. Running into oil preasure issues this week on my 09 5.4 3v. Oil was changed two days prior. Easing into parking space and truck began to stumble as if it were going to stall. Codes P0012 P0022 and P0016. Would you suggest having a shop perform oil preasure test before diagnosing codes? Truck has 148k miles. Thank you, I will continue to follow your channel. Needing all the knowledge I can soak up on this engine.

Unfortunately its not just oil pressure. Its time to replace the timing chain, chain guides, phasers, and VVT solenoids. While in there, also upgrade to the Melling high volume pump. I have done this on 2 of my sons trucks. This 2007 one and a 2010 one. The codes and what you are experiencing is typical of this issue.

Instead of sanding down couldn't you use say permatex black gasket maker very thinly to fill in imperfections on the piece?

I really would not do that because both oil and coolant flow through this piece. The slightest failure would be catastrophic. I sanded it as a simple fix vs buying a new one because the truck was needed. So far the repair has worked well.

It could or have a cooling system full of oil. The large port is for coolant and the two small ports are oil to the filter and oil from the filter.

@@DadofThree maybe if you aint taking care of it. I got 200k hard miles of hauling a toyhauler every weekend 150 miles+ and the only thing ive ever had to replace was the imrc. My f150 is an 04 xlt 4x4. Maybe prior they were shit or you just got one built on a Monday or a Friday. My shit was built on a Wednesday for sure.

Never understand why people buy these 5.4 Liter with 3 valve engines. This is the worst engines Ford had built. Major flaws with the cam followers, Timing chain guides breaking, spark plug plug breaking off , oil pan and this oil filter housing assembly leaking . Ford has been around a long time and still got issues building engines.

If you mistreat the 5.4 and fail to maintain it, then yea it turns to crap. All the work I have done to repair 5.4' is because they were not maintained or they took it to some dips#it that put 3 different brand plugs in it, off brand parts, and used traditional 5w20 oil and a dollar store filter.
